Lube the thread. Titanium cranks doesn't add to your performance as much as losing 5 - 10 lbs of body weight. That's more weight reduction than what cranks weigh.
The first indicator of loosening it right is to turn where the crank back pedal and the cogs does not spin with the wheel. While the cogs and the wheel locks together on tightening pedal. The reason for that is to make sure the pedals doesnt come loose when pedaling hard
That looks like the best way force your soft flesh into the sharp chainrings. Do it the safe way: pedal forward, Allen key backwards and push down with your foot (wearing a shoe). The downward motion is also directionally away from the sharp chainrings.
I don't recommend doing it this guys way at all. If your pedal is pretty tight or a hit seized you run the risk of smashing your knuckles into the frame or even worse the chain. A better method to rotate the crank arm until its vertical with the pedal at the bottom. Place the wrench onto the pedal at a 90 degree angle and stand on it. Therefore, if it does slip the wrench smashes into the floor instead of you smashing your knuckles
I've actually cranked my pedal the wrong way hard enough that it stripped out the crank and was still stuck freely rotating on a newly made aluminum bushing of threads. Oof! that a hard lesson. Had to cut it out.
Any ideas on when you might go to Hawaii? Ive been waiting to see what they have to offer haha (saving to go there and if MTB is good, im bringing my Riegn SX for it) 🤘🤘
No. Crank at six a clock, tool parallel with the chain towards the back and press down to the ground. This way you don't smash you hands in the chainring.
Crank at three, wrench at three, press down over pedal spindle, while pulling up on end of wrench. You don't lose the crank to free backspin when the pedal lets go, you can put your weight into it, and you're as far from the pointy bits as you can be.
I put flat pedals back on a couple weeks ago. The first one was a pain to get on, decided to just push through it... seemed a little off, but it kept going. Grab my other pedal, look at it and see a R on it, instantly remember im the biggest idiot in the world and that I put the wrong pedal on. Took the wrong one off and basically re threaded the proper one on with a little force. Seems to be holding, but on my way back to the car, blasting down a forest trail road as max speed... I just couldn't stop thinking about that fucked up threading in my crank, couldn't stop thinking.. am I about to die? Am I about to die Brian? Should I buy a new bike Brian???
mine had completely fused due to lack of maintenance..and copper grease....then i noticed i had no 15 mm square nut on the pedal side..... so i was dumping the old ones anyway ....bench grinder and a vice job.... more maintenance ....please...lol great tip there.....
Since pushing on wrenches is often dangerous, if the bike is one the ground, I'll just step on the wrench to loosen. I run my pedals much tighter than Brian though, so pushing on the wrench would certainly destroy my knuckles when it lets loose.
my pedals were so stuck penetrating oil did nothing, i took a blowtorch to try and melt any locktite that might be there, nope. i tried a 1/2 in impact wrench... nothing. tried removing cranks, oil/heat/removal tool pulled all the threads out of both sides and still wont come off... i think i have to throw the whole bike away.
This is an amazing trick for punching a chainring, the best way is: pedal near the front wheel, allen key sticking out towards the back wheel and press down, that way you dont punch your chainring or your frame and you get much more mechanical advantage.
To me a better way is to have the crank vertical to the ground and grab around the allen key and crankarm this way you can't smash your hand into the chainring.
Having a background in bike and automotive repair, I keep a medium duty cordless impact wrench on hand just in case. Works wonders on stuck pedals and cranks.
Nice vid man.. the clock wise, counter clock wise thing always screws with me because of how prospective changes clock directions. But the back of the bike is always the back. Excellent! Thanks man.
The real trick is saving up to afford titanium cranks.
At that price point i expect my pedals to self change pins, order food and tell me I'm doing good in life.
yeah dude!
$1400
And Brian can barely ride some times. Great trails & bikes though for sure. 💯

Perfect video. Right to the point.
And the "back off" way of remembering is an easy way to remember.
Thanks

While the cogs and the wheel locks together on tightening pedal.
The reason for that is to make sure the pedals doesnt come loose when pedaling hard
That's the best explanation to remember. Everyone else explains the threads and directions and what not. Too confusing

I always know where it goes by checking which direction would be more annoyeing to turn because I have no leverage, that's the right one.

Great advice thank you!
That’s so helpful thank you
this helped me so much! thank you!!
Back off saying is very useful
Funny, but I made this realization just a couple of months ago. It never even occurred to me to see it this way until just very recently.
You just saved me from looking like a dumbass again.. hah, back off... I'll remember that
Thanks !
Make sure your chain is on 1st. If not your punching the rings
Thanks dude
Any ideas on when you might go to Hawaii? Ive been waiting to see what they have to offer haha (saving to go there and if MTB is good, im bringing my Riegn SX for it) 🤘🤘
Sometimes I just take the cranks off and put and really man handle them there pedals
Thank for that 😃
That looks like Kevin’s bike. I watch berm peak
Nice advice💪🏻👨🔧🍺
Back off! No means NO
When you don't have ideas for video during quarantine
What are you talking about? He’s going places in quarantine. He’s gone all the way across the country.
I'm joking
Put the pressure and go slow. Chainrings hitting your knuckles is never fun
E wings I want them
This is here. Okay.
1st
And remember to put grease or anti-seize on the threads of the pedals when installing them. It's not fun using a torch to get your pedals off later.
Ooooh that explains it. I always use loctite
@@i_like_toytles superglue works better
Don't do it in the dark then
@@i_like_toytles always make sure you use the red stuff!! 👍😝
@@christonamtb4089 lmao
I always wear gloves. I've launched my fingers into the chainring(s) before when the tension releases.
Ouch 😣 a good set of boxing gloves should offer enough padding...
Ive done it too and it hurts a lot, way more than you would think!
And when the pedals are really tight, it can hurt your hands if you pull hard
Is even painful if your cracks isnt a 1x and you hit a chainring with no chain on it and hit the teeth 😅
That's why you don't start at the top like he says
Happy to see ya diving into the #shorts
I thought this was going to be a video on smashing your knuckles on the chain ring.
Short. Sweet. And Straight to the point. This is how I like it!
Amen Brother, words to live by.
I needed this video 21 years ago.
No. Crank at six a clock, tool parallel with the chain towards the back and press down to the ground. This way you don't smash you hands in the chainring.
That's how I remember it. If I have the Allen wrench point towards the back of the bike all I need to do is push down👍🏿
Definitely the best way

This.
Did I just get Tik Tok'd!? Also. Super useful tip! Great stuff!!

Short and Straight to the point. You should make more videos like this.
I never thought I'd see you post a vertical video.
@@JoshuaJoseph-ck9jl he is always so picky with his camera settings and having the best quality video. I am surprised.
He posted one a few years ago: “A Day in the Life of BKXC”
I love you man u helped me alot back off🙏💯💯💯
You forgot to mention make sure the bike is set in motion. One pedal facing upward and the other facing downwards.
can you not have em both at the same position and bunny hop as you go lol
And remember to keep some PB Blaster on hand for those pedals that have been on your bike one season too man ...
Wrenchin’ with BKXC. Pilot.
BKXC tutorials!

With both the BB and pedals, I remember the direction by knowing that the item would unscrew itself if the bearing seized while pedaling.
Clean. 👀👍
I thought this was going to be a video about a rock garden 🤷♂️
I recommend everyone to have your allen key below the cranks, so you don't punch the shit out of your chainring or bb
To me a better way is to have the crank vertical to the ground and grab around the allen key and crankarm this way you can't smash your hand into the chainring.
thank u for showing us easy tricks do love and appreciate 🤝🙋♂️🍻
What kind of wrench though on all my bikes the back part that you’re putting that into is just flat and there’s no hole
Big help! It was 50/50 and I chose the wrong one before seeing your video. 👍
I knew someone that used red loctite on
Their pedals. Yea back off didn’t work 😂
I’m pretty sure the bike shop I had my bike tuned at used a breaker bar to tighten my pedals cause I had to use a impact driver
my personal method is a crescent wrench and a mallet. avoids smashing your hands into the chainrings.
So simple once you know this. Little trick is install them with bit of grease and never seize on
Make sure to use red Loctite when you install them 😉😂
Caution when going to the back, when the back is your big chain ring. It bites.
Once you get fit you will have to get that tool horizontal and step on it because the pedals will be too tight.😂
Put the crank at a vertical angle down then insert the Allen so it’s back by the chainstay and step on the wrench
I just say righty tighty left lucy and all my parts just drip right off.
Good tip , don't have to do them up very tight at all even if only finger tight they will never come loose
And this is how I ended up with chainring puncture injuries deep into my tendons and nerves in my hand.
Ok but where's the part where you cover how to put the skin back on your knuckles after you accidentally jam your fist into your chainring?
Chicks dig body damage, man.
Cannot relate. Mine were so tight, that I broke the tool and had to get a pedal wrench so loosen them on the other side. :D
I get a wrench lean my bike on the wall put the wrench on the pedal and stand on it to crack it loose really easy
This man has a sexy voice .❤❤❤❤ hello i am an American man in the Philippines ❤❤❤
That's the quickest way to have no knuckles. The noob status of these videos is insane
You are a life saver. Watched a million videos and still forget which way to turn😩💪🏾
Really? A video of how to remove pedals? 🤦♂️🤣
And avoid hitting the frame with your allen key wrench
Don't forget to reverse the procedure if performed in Australia
What is this witchcraft.... They don't come off that easy 😜
The right ( drive side ) side is a right hand thread and the left side is a left hand thread
Having a background in bike and automotive repair, I keep a medium duty cordless impact wrench on hand just in case. Works wonders on stuck pedals and cranks.
Gotta love impacts. Doesn't matter what direction you set it to, it will still get it off one way or another
To those of a certain age "Mr. Goodwrench" comes to mind🔧
I'm using my foot and it's still not coming off! 😭
the fact than clockwise anticlockwise does work on bike.
So 12k ppl still dont know how to remove their pedals.
Hmmm, a little reminder for yourself, it looks like...
Вспомнить бы это видео когда меняешь педали
Make sure to use some greese when you install petals
Fantastic i will never forget back off back bike
I went to give a 👍🏼 but it was already blue. Maybe one of these times “back off” will stick in “my head”.
Hahaha yup!
Look how absolutely battered those pedals are!
Best video out there for pedal removal!
Best pedal tutorial on yt brian👍👍
Nice vid man.. the clock wise, counter clock wise thing always screws with me because of how prospective changes clock directions. But the back of the bike is always the back. Excellent! Thanks man.
I reference this video a few times a year!
Ben Shapiro is a cyclist now?😂
Just had to flex the titanium didn't you
Not what I want. I want the whole thing
Yeet BKXC posted a #shorts video
Back Off. back off. Back off 🙏🏼👌🏽✌🏽
Kinda saved me not gonna lie was working the wrong way for 15 minutes
Haha, I have to reference this video sometimes to remember!
A bit of a different video but I liked it! Cool
