ZERO ROOM FOR ERROR - Tamiya vs Airfix

  • I did a comparison of Airfix's 1/72 P-51D Mustang up against Tamiya's aging kit and the result was incredible close. We're going to do the same again with 1/72 Zero's only this time Airfix's kit came out a year prior to Tamiya's offering. So, which is better? I've built a few of the Airfix offering before and it's, in my opinion, one of their best little kits which means Tamiya has 'Zero' room for error in their offering. Just like last time we'll to the inbox review first and then we'll turn our attention to the build.

    My preference is 1/48
Scale and I tried several different kits and found that Tamiya is far better. But I will say Airfix is very close behind.
Thanks for the video and for sharing it with us.

The Tamiya zero is one of the best kits I've ever had the pleasure of building. Airfix have upped their game but they're still light years behind Tamiya

Airfix is much better than they were in the 70's when I couldn't afford Tamiya. Now, Airfix is better value, but Tamiya is a bit better if the cost is not a problem. Both build great models.

Tamiya every time for me although the latest Airfix releases are catching Tamiya up.

Both kits seems very good, the Airfix one is surely more economical and easier to find, the Tamiya has the open cockpit 's option with a finer interior 's detail. Hasegawa did a box of IJN naval personnel & pilots, perfects for a diorama with Tamiya 's Zero.

Good vid, nice to see an honest review. Although I don't build Tamiya and I am a dedicated Airfixophile I think you're correct in you summary over which is best. Two probs for this Airfix boxing being the canopy detail is not correct and neither is the colour scheme. The canopy frames on a Zero meet at a right angle not a radius as on the Airfix kit whose detail is "chunkier" than the Tamiya offering. The underside colour is meant to be trainer orange, not grey on this particular aircraft. OH yeah, BTW the "rivets" you're referring to are actually access panel fasteners. I'll look forward to the side by side build, have fun!!

Thanks for the review, and the comparison. For the Tamiya kit, they usually put colour photos for each version on the sides of the box. Enjoy the builds!

I would have thought that there would be no comparison, but I am pleasantly surprised. Yes Tamiya is the clear winner BUT Airfix have come along way from their pilot on a stick days.

Like 'em both. But my slight preference goes to Tamiya.

The Airfix kit builds like a perfect dream. With all of the decal options available now, I ended up getting like eight of these. The Tamiya kit is very nice, but why buy one of these when you can get two or three of the Airfix? I did get two at $6.00 USD, which was pretty good at the time.

You never get any pilots in Tamiya kits for the price you
should ...I made the Tamiya Spitfire and had no option for raised gear so had to do it myself and bought pilot on eBay.for the price I like Airfix...loved the vid 👍

To be honoust, there is no comparison. Tamiya kit is much finer. The canopy alone makes all the difference, but that carries on to many other parts, like the engine cowling and the penal line detail.

Tamiya vs. Hasegawa, that's the question

The Tamiya kit is the clear winner for me. I appreciate the value that Airfix offers, but they have a long way to go to match the surface detailing of Tamiya, Hasegawa, and others.

No one, ever, bothers to find out HOW cameras do auto-focus.They just complain it doesn't read their minds.
They sample the degree of contrast differential between different focus lengths, ie, how different each pixel is from the one next to it. The auto focus will select for the highest CD. You are trying to get a camera to focus on a small smooth gray object whilst holding it against a huge high contrast gray rug. Naturally the rug is generating a much higher CD value and so the camera is selecting that as optimal focal length.
Even if running at, say, ninety frames per second, the camera still has huge chunks of time between frames to basically slide through the whole range of focus options it has, generate a suitable graph, select the optimal, return the lens to that focus state, then take another frame. They have to code in focus grabbing tests to only happen from time to time otherwise it'd be near impossible to get a camera to rest at a focal length, but, these settings can be found, usually, and changed, so it can hold a focal length longer or shorter depending on needs.
You should film against a background that has little to no contrast difference, such as a large sheet of white or black paper, so the CD value of the background is close to zero. It helps to use diffuse light. If you really, REALLY want it to snap to the object being held, hold that object up along with a card of black and white checkers.
Some cameras have software filters in to prioritise CD in human skin tones ranges, assuming you're more likely to want to photograph people than pieces of plastic, but this can usually be disabled if you can dive deep into the COS, however, more relevant, you can test whether or not you are getting better auto focus results if you wear nitrile gloves or not, and wear or don't wear them accordingly.

Tamiya produces 4 different Zeros in this scale, all with multiple color schemes; because of Brexit & inflation the Airfix offering is only slightly lower here in the Netherlands…
If I’m going to spend 10-15 hours building a model of this sort the price difference isn’t an important factor; I’ll go for quality every time. ⚒️✌️

Your camera focus issues are caused largely from your background I think. Go for a background that has no features. Smooth and white and see if it improves.

I prefer the airfix kit. It is cheaper and easier to build. I have found that tamiya is very expensive.

They are both good but Tamiya has the edge in detail but the Airfix kit is much cheaper. As I like to build my models wheels up,Airfix models mostly come with the choice in the kit,so it's Airfix for me.

You will never be able to understand the determination of the British to want to put an Airfix kit on the same level as the similar Tamiya one, except for deep-rooted chauvinism.
A modeller, I mean really not a 12 year old kid, cares little about the price although nowadays with Brexit an Airfix kit doesn't even have that going for it...
Panel lines, quantity and quality in sharp and precise detail is what an adult and quality modeller looks for and that is far surpassed by Tamiya compared to Airfix.
Wanting to compare a Tamiya kit with another Airfix is like comparing an egg with a chestnut...
Airfix was, is and will be a second-rate brand with basic kits that can hardly satisfy a modeler who appreciates quality. Before they had the incentive of a low price but the intelligent British rulers decided to implement Brexit. I wonder to what extent Hannats' sales have dropped and what its owner and workers think about it.
In the end you say that Tamiya's advantage over Airfix is marginal... It's such an absurdly blatant lie that I can't help but laugh at such stupidity.
