You just answered a question I've had and done it so well. I encountered the very problems you describe and didn't know what the solutions was, until now! Off to shop for my own l-bracket.
Thanks a bunch for the demo, David. I had always wondered what the device was, but I could not look it up because I did not even know his name. Very much appreciated!
this is really great accessory every photographer should have, I bought mine recently and I wish I've bought it years ago for the same reasons you've mentioned .
Great video as usual David - wish I'd known about these a couple of years ago! I've just invested in an 'L' bracket following the very ball-head creep you were talking about, it's made things sooo much quicker and easier 👍🏻
Thanks for the review. Going to get an L-Bracket soon, for the exact reasons you mentioned. But need a new ballhead first, because my SBH-100 (which came with my Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB tripod) ist closes on one side, so cannot use an L bracket. Thumbs up for your video!
Would be nice if Adorama started a shop in Europe. When us guys from the other side of the pond try to buy their products we get very much discouraged by the hefty shipping and duty extras we’d need to pay that it simply isn’t worth it.
I've used an L bracket for years, and recommend them for my students. They also work as an exoskeleton and can help protect your camera if it drops. Sunway makes some nice reasonably priced ones. I've also seen some nice ones on eBay from Asia. Don't get the cheap two piece ones shown in the video. Get one made out of one piece with nothing to have to worry about tightening.
I've bought and used the "cheap two piece" at less than $40 and they work perfectly fine, never had them come apart. If you are worried about the pieces coming apart, apply some silicon or adhesive and put them together. Beast paying $120 for a piece of metal that's maybe a little better.
Hey David - Not sure the L-Bracket would be that important with the super WIDE angle lens you're using! ;-} Another great tip and a bit of humor tossed in for free!
just bought L bracket for my sony a7m2..before, it was hard for me taking potrait mode especially to create panoramic photo..also as a safety kit to the camera
I just realized there are TWO "standards" in the market for quick releases: Arca & Manfrotto. Just bought an L bracket but surprisingly is for ArcaSwiss and my tripod heads are Manfrotto. Bummer.
I am predominantly shooting real estate, both photos and video on a regular basis. I am forced to shoot vertically for many small bathrooms, buildings, and 2 story residence. I am using a manfroto tripod, with a dual bubbles/ with extended controls to level the camera. Do you know of anyone who has used this with a small rig cage on a Sony A73? Would this even work?
Some (not all) of Really Right Stuff L brackets have an adjustment so they can be up against the left side of the camera or further out a bit. That might work for you...
0:28 I don't know what you mean with "most tripods alone", but I never had a head that couldn't do portrait. And who uses a tripod without a head? Also, 1:06, I never had that problem. When I fix my head (used different 3-ways and balls in the past), it doesn't move. At all. And we're not talking about super expensive equipment here. My current ballhead is a Manfrotto 324RC2.
You are right. Yet L brackets make a huge difference in terms of convenience and utility. Especially when you are shooting high magnification macro or making Panaromas it is a great pain to have your ball head axis changed. It saves great time and effort. Also it doesn't have to be an expensive upgrade. There are cheaper but durable alternatives if you search online.
I'm wondering if there is such thing as a lock for tripod.. I have a manfoto good tripod filming myself street performing on my gh5, the tripod is chained to my music stand, altho I need a lock for the attachment that the camera is husted to tripod so no one can screw it off & run away with it Basically a only way to open if i have the key in my pocket... then i'd feel secure with my 1000£ camera away from me
using a cheap l bracket on a cheap grip is asking for wobble .. we tested l brackets on mehke grips ..nikon grips .. theres a reason nikon grips are expensive when used with an L bracket theyre much more stable ..
Thanks David. Anyone here have a D850 or any other body using the Grip? think the threads will hold up? it's not like screwing it INTO the body it self... I might want to try this.
If you use a nikon grip, you won't have any problem. Some of the third party grips are great as well, but not all. I've attached l brackets, holsters, and shoulder straps to my d610 grip and not had a problem even with heavy lenses attached.
If your ball head is arca Swiss standard it is compatible. But most manfrotto models comes with manfrottos own system. But you can use a simple converter for that, instead of buying a whole new ball head.
I really don't see the need for an L-plate. The time it takes to loosen your camera and switch to portrait is about the same time (probably longer) than it takes me to flip my ball head to the vertical. My ball head has a side notch and if the head is is level slipping in into the notch is a perfect 90% degrees change. A much easier maneuver in my opinion. A good ball head (I have an Acratech) will not slip on the side even with a long lense and does not make your set-up unstable providing you have a decent tripod. I also don't like the way L-plates cover up the ports on the side of the camera making it very fiddly to attach a cable release, which is a major drawback. They also add unnecessary bulk to the camera. I've tried L-plates, but they are definitely not for me. They aren't exactly cheap either, so I'd say try and borrow one before you buy.
Eos R? Reeeeeaaaally? You've spent all of these years using a reflex system and when you start shooting mirrorless you go with Canon? I don't understand people

Wow. Two minutes changed my life! And this time, it's 📷 support instead of child support.
I bought one just months ago. I don’t know I have done so fare without it! Super useful indeed!
this is really great accessory every photographer should have,
I bought mine recently and I wish I've bought it years ago for the same reasons you've mentioned .
The best video about L-bracket, short and explaining how to use it! Thank you very much!
Thank you! Love the shot of you holding the bracket screaming!

THANKS! Mr Bergman once again solid advice/info
There's an L bracket permanently affixed to my A9 for the very reasons you mention. It's incredibly useful.
Nice! Been shooting for many years but I never knew about this.
This was perfect timing - I just got an L bracket and it didn't come with any instructions. Thanks!
Just recently acquired an L bracket. So glad I did. Thank you!!!

I’ve used L plates for quite a few years from Really Right Stuff. Excellent quality.
Would be nice if Adorama started a shop in Europe. When us guys from the other side of the pond try to buy their products we get very much discouraged by the hefty shipping and duty extras we’d need to pay that it simply isn’t worth it.
tottaly agree, or a web shop within eu
Yup. Key piece of kit. L Bracket solves orientation problems all day long.

Boy, that was helpful - thank you!
Been using one for a long time, I don't leave home with out it.
Thanks.

Great Video! Thank you!
This is a fantastic idea
Thats such a nice content. Thank you!
Lol, I bought this last week, and NOW you talk about it.
So is the width of L brackets standard? My ball head quick clamp is made for a mount that is 40mm wide at the tips of the bevels.
Could you please show some tips on the Lastolite HiLite Illuminated White Background ? Besides the obvious there most other ways to use it.
Many thanks I must get one 👍
just bought L bracket for my sony a7m2..before, it was hard for me taking potrait mode especially to create panoramic photo..also as a safety kit to the camera
Thanks a lot for sharing L bracket
David..... Is.... The..... Man

I use a Stroboframe flip bracket on a tripod
For $120 does that include you fitting the bracket for me, or is there gold leaf trim included? Lol
Love to see u screaming. So good in this video
Thanks David L Bergman
can this replace the quick release of a gimbal? is it correct to assume that the L plate helps getting the camera on a gimbal more quickly?
AND - get one that will allow your screen to move out and tilt (if it does that)

Do they make an L bracket which allows for tethered cabling? So you can leave the cable in place and flip the camera to vertical.
Some (not all) of Really Right Stuff L brackets have an adjustment so they can be up against the left side of the camera or further out a bit. That might work for you...
Thank you
Can you recommend or is there any solution for using a L-Bracket with a Peak Design capture clip? Thanks
Erika did you eventually figure out if it is possible? I love my capture clip v3 but interested in an L bracket
I need one of these...
Noticed your "L" Bracket had EOS R marked on it. Does Canon make "L" Brackets or is it a third party manufacturer?
Third party. I’ve used Really Right Stuff brackets for years.
Any suggestions on L brackets with a battery grip attached?
after long time use , is it make any scratches in camera body ?

What quick release plate would this work with? I have a manfrotto quick release plate 200PL
Can i use this L bracket in zhiyun crane 2 gimbal for portrait shoots ?
does anyone know where I can get an L bracket for a Sony A7i? Everything I'm finding is for the A7iii :(

i must the odd one out... three Manfrotto tripods and my L bracket doesn't fit any of them... am i missing something?
They will be running a 200pl plate which is not Arca Swiss!
Hey everyone :) Is there any L Bracket for the Canon 77D? I did not find anything :(
Look on Ebay…..hundreds of them!
useful toy 😉
Do you have to have a special mount for the tripod to use it?
If your ball head is arca Swiss standard it is compatible. But most manfrotto models comes with manfrottos own system. But you can use a simple converter for that, instead of buying a whole new ball head.
Amazon has them for 20-40 dollars.

120$??? are you crazy???
Yes crazzzzzzyyyyyyyy
I spent way cheaper than that for my d750. I think mine was around $30. Different brand but the same purpose.
Take a look at Chinese wholesale sites. You can easily find for 10 or 20 dollars.
Eos R? Reeeeeaaaally?
You've spent all of these years using a reflex system and when you start shooting mirrorless you go with Canon? I don't understand people
And what is wrong with his choice? And what should he have went with, don't tell me the camera system you are using right!!
Believe it or not some people actually like Canon.
Yeah... 'cause RUclips streamers always use only one system and never test out other equipment... /s
Blah, Blah, Blah, it's not about equipment it's about who's behind it.
Lose the music. Terrible. I want to hear your voice.
