This process won't work while using a BASS TUNER APP versus a tuner that you plug from guitar to tuner OR should it matter? That's what I use A TUNER APP that I think works great for me.
But I can't get a reading off any of the strings from the 12th fret pluck like in your video. But no big deal because I tinkered with it for a hr or more and it sounds better , plays better and smoother, and my pickup switch is working correctly again
Hey man- I would assume it would work with a bass tuner, especially on a bass, but I can't be sure without seeing it myself. And that's weird that you can't get a reading on the 12th fret. The higher the pitch, the more a tuner usually likes a note!

Rob you never disappoint. They are a bunch of videos with this topic and many other guitar topics and all the other videos just don't cut it for me. With robs videos its a whole different ball game. Every thing he teaches and shows i always understand it better then the other videos. He alway gives the best info and will explain it to were you can understand it all. I've watched many other RUclips videos and alot of them just don't do it for me and I lose my attention fast. Not with robs videos I soak it all the info up and re-watch many of robs older videos and always learn something new from then. Thanks for being there for your fans rob.

One thing I always do when doing a setup is I always tune up to the note when tuning. I never tune down to pitch ,I've found that doing that can give you a false tune . Just what I do. Great vid as always brother 👍

Hey I understand! I like mechanical stuff, but I still take my cars into the repair shop!
And another thing is that if you have a good tech working on your stuff, no reason to not continue that way!
Learned a tuning trick the other day on RUclips,
When you're trying to perfectly tune when intonating for instance,
Switch to the neck pickup and lower the tone knob on the guitar just about 10%
Somehow this gives a much better reading on digital tuners, as if there's less "noise" interfering the signal of the pickup or something like that.

Alot of videos on youtube don't actually show how to intonate bridges but yours was informative,my guitar has the les paul type bridge,simple and super easy,love that natural curve

Great video dude! Fun to watch! So many people don't know this. I remember back in the day so many players would complain that their Floyd goes out of tune after dive bombing. This is why. I could be a maniac with the bar and my guitars never go out of tune.

Even though I'm familiar with adjusting intonation, I still like watching videos like this. It's a good refresher, at least. I have the same guitar, but the 2020 model. I ended up swapping out the Fishmans for the EMG 81/60 combo.
Shoot, my low E dances around perfect and I'm tuned to E flat with 11-52 strings. That's on my EC-1001, though. My M-1000 lives in D and drop C, occasionally, and it seems to be a little more stable with tuning.

@@RobArnoldWorld Yeah, they're pretty nice, especially the Eclipse. I've been an ESP/LTD fan for many years now. They just have a nice fit and finish to them and have a good feel to them. My Eclipse was a B-stock, so I got it for a good price. I put a GraphTech nut on both guitars and what an improvement.
EMGs over Fishmans all day any day, eh?!!! 😀👍🏼
I did the same with my Schecter SLS Elite Evil Twin. It came with Fishman Fluence Moderns but I just really did not dig the sound of them. Had them swapped for the EMG 81/60 and it sounds much better now. Fishmans are great pickups but I feel they're a bit overrated.
@@patrickolivier1 Yeah, I tried the Fluence Modern pickups for about 6 months before I changed them out for my go-to EMG 81/60 combo and I immediately heard a drastic difference. EMGs just have a nasty snarl about them, especially the 81, and I love the bluesy sound of the 60. The 60 is quite killer in the bridge, too.

One thing I’ve noticed when doing set ups, if you roll your tone knob down, and use the neck pup. You’ll get more accurate reading on the tuner. I mean I use a Peterson strobe tuner for my set ups, just cause how accurate they are, and with me using 7 strings and low tunings it really helps with the wound strings. Another thing that helps is backing the pick ups down a bit. It helps with not getting those blips you mentioned. Killer vid bro

However, in my defense, I'm mainly a drummer and just play guitar a little on the side but this is information I need to know so I don't have to keep paying someone else to do it for me. 5:38 a note is a certain frequency, so the string produces that frequency. Lower frequencies equal longer wavelengths and vice versa. That's why a low pitch instrument, like a bass, has a longer scale length (obviously string tension is also a factor). But that basically means, if it is sharp, you have to elongate the measure and if it's flat you have to shorten the measure (basically "stretching" and "squeezing" the wave). :)

when lowering the pitch, you should pass the middle a little, and then give it a tiny tug. then tune it UP to pitch. it will help since theres no locking nut ;)

I cannot say or give enough thanks to all yall guys that give perfect information to dedicated players that can't learn enough.
I'll say this tho MY WASHBURN BASS wasn't very far off. And I set my action up after I learned how OFF A VIDEO SIMILAR a couple years ago..( before I would let a local SEASONED ) work on my stuff.
I would like some wiring info for an ACTIVE EMG setup. I have an late 80s or early 90s WASHBURN ABT with a 9v pot in the body.

Very good video! I've been intonating my guitars on my own for ages, but I always forget which way to adjust the saddles. That "chase the needle" hint will stick, seriously good advice.
Regarding the lower strings, have you considered tuning by harmonic overtones? You can strike the 5th, 7th and/or 9th fret harmonic and tune that, then strike the octave at 17th, 19th and/or 21st fret and see how well they are in tune. I find those much more consistent than the loose and wobbly open low strings.
Great to hear man! Even though I've done this a ton of times now, I too still have to think about which way to move the saddles, and as you said, the chase the needle hint helps every time! And yes, I'll often take a look at various harmonic overtones as well, and I like to try and take the average between the open, the fretted 12th, and the natural harmonics!

Thank you so much! I just finished setting up my Tele using your method here. I even used the app of the tuner you used. (Yes, I know the app probably isn't as accurate as the real thing, but it's what I have.)
Setting the intonation was a bit of a pain in the ass cuz it's my first time & the heavier strings are harder to set, just like you said, but I FINALLY got green lights for both the open string and the fretted 12th fret on all 6 strings, so that's good enough for me!
Definitely gonna subscribe to your channel! My dream is to someday build & set up my own guitar from scratch using Warmoth parts & now I am this much closer to that goal. 👌

Great video! Often overlooked, intonation is just as important as any other aspect of setup/ maintenance. I can't tell you how many used guitars I come across that have all the saddles in a perfect line, a tell tale that they didn't intonate the guitar. It's sad because they probably gave up on the instrument without the guitar ever being set up properly and allowed to shine.
I just got an Ibanez bass for $100 used that had a terrible setup with high action, a couple high frets, improper intonation, and fret sprout. The guy hated the bass and I probably could have talked him into giving it to me for free. I set it up with the used strings for proper relief, action, and intonation and played it for about 2 weeks to assess the fret needs. I ended up doing a full fret level , crown, and polish and I filed and rounded the fret ends and rolled the fingerboard edge. Finished up with new strings and setup + intonation and I have a gigable $100 bass.
I absolutely enjoy the process of bringing an instrument back to life that is so close to being thrown away. The neck is SOOOO comfortable now and the bass really shines. I know it's better than it was new.
I get that maintenance is for everyone, and if it's not, that's fair... just make sure your gear gets visits to a qualified tech that will make it all that it can be.

@@RobArnoldWorld I learned with RUclips videos. Just finished my 5th fret level and I see improvement with each project.
If you’re looking to do it, pick up a used Squier affinity for $100 and I guarantee the frets need leveling. When you’re done you can give it away or sell it for what you paid.
Stew mac’s z file is worth it…. I’m using a 3 corner file and there was certainly a learning curve.

my intonation is off on the A string. I moved the saddle back even to the fardest, it did nothing still the same. I go ok it's the other way so I do it twice again putting it at the fardest it still off. lol bottom line? your guess is as good as mine. forget about it is my answer.

I made the mistake and intonate my guitar while setting a flat tremolo, then decided to have it floating... guess what.... I have to intonate it again lol! The height of the saddles are still nice tho

@@RobArnoldWorld yeah, adjusting tremolo from decked to floating, or even if you set heavier or lighter gauge on. I have mine setup with. 8s to 38, I was thinking 8,5s to 42 to have a thicker 6th, but 38 works fine. before that I went the extra mile to try out 7s to 36 which was very fun to bend 2 steps effortless, BUT I did smash that D string a bit too hard playing surfing with the alien so it broke during a pretty nasty scream where I used my 2.5mm and dug into the note lol. I loved 7s so 8s are the stronger alternative, will try 7s again som day when I just want to do crazy bends, and the strings play them self on 7s 🤭

@@RobArnoldWorld If you have not tried it yet, I'll say try it! Strings are pretty much playing them self with such light gauge.
.07s is also very fun to play on, but you have to play very carefully on .07s because the lighter gauge the easier they break, but 8 and 8,5 is perfect for me at least.
I like .09s too which i have on my telecaster, but the bends are far easier to do on the .08s and on .07 you can easily bend 2-3 whole steps 😲
What gauge do you use? I'm guessing .10 or .11? Some prefer 0.13 gauge which is not wrong at all, but a little heavy for my taste.
I have tried a baritone guitar that had :.014 - .068 gauge, which made a very fat sound on the 6th string which makes those guitars awesome for heavy metal! :)

In what way are you struggling? Perhaps I can help. And remember, it's the principals that are important, and the method should be applied to each string in the same way. So you wouldn't treat one string differently than another, when it comes to intonating the strings.
@@RobArnoldWorld thanks, I have 2 more electric guitars I do not have a problem for intonation but got a Schecter - Nick Johnston Traditional recently and the E string is still a little high on 12 frets there seems to be no space left to tighten the screw and make the length of string longer, I even changed strings but still same. A few cents higher and perhaps I am a perfectionist :)
@@persiaguitar I understand, and I've run into the same issue before too. From one perfectionist to another, it is a frustrating scenario. While i don't have a sure-fire solution, all I can say is that somewhere in the mechanics of it all, one component of your setup isn't playing nicely with another. It could be the relationship between your tuning, and the string gauge. Or one of those things, and your neck relief. Or your tuning and your scale length. etc.
There are many variables. And if you have the time, I recommend experimenting relentlessly. And eventually, the guitar should tell you what it likes. From there you can begin to figure out how to manipulate things in a way so that you're both happy. Good luck!
@@persiaguitar Had this problem in 2 guitars and returned them, it may be badly placed bridge, so I don't want to work with that on a new instrument. Sometimes it's a high nut that can cause this, so a luthier can help with that. Also, you can try to lower your string action, because it makes intonation more "flat", but only if you have spare space until strings start to buzz :) And if I remember correctly, you can try to make your neck more straight using truss rod, which basically makes strings a tiny bit longer.
Was all going fine until I ran out of screw length on the high E adjusting it so it wasn’t flat on the 12th fret. Oh well, guitar tech it is
I've been hearing that a lot and I think it's a matter of whatever gauge you're using, not liking whatever tuning you're using. Finding the right combination of those two things helps them play better together.

If a string is sharp, the string needs to be lengthened to flatten it. Conversely, if the note is flat, the string needs to be shortened. So making a string longer makes it flatter, while making it shorter makes it sharper.Jan 7, 2016

Another great video. You came up with a cool 'rule of thumb' of which I never heard, which is the chasing the needle trip. So simple, yet I never thought of it lol. I be sittin here going, "A'ight, my low C string (yup. I tune all my guitars to either drop C or to straight D, which is just standard tuning a whole step down. I will never go back to standard; guitars just sound so much more rich & full) is sharp at the 12th fret so let's see here, sharp means the string is too short so the harmonic nodes are all off and the overall pitch of a shorter string starts going up because it vibrates at a higher frequency, soooo....yeah, gotta lengthen the string a bit...."
In the meantime, you go, "Sharp right flat left, done, go play gig now, hang out with gf, write some new songs.." 😅 while I'm late for the gig, my gf is pissed because she thinks I stood her up so she goes with some other dude, band still doing sound check when people begin showing up for the show, nevvamind writing new songs I'm not in the mood _becsuse I spent all that time doing my intonation aaaaaaAAAAAAAAA!"_

My old tuner had a needle and I found to be very good to use. One thing I'd like to ask you Rob. What is the longest time that you had strings on any of your guitars ? and does it harm the neck of any other part of the guitar with having strings on for a long time .
I like the feel of fresh strings, so on guitars that I play often, I change the strings often. But I have many guitars I don't touch for YEARS, and the strings just sit on them with no issues, other than aging. Guitars are meant to have strings on them, and so they certainly don't mind them. You can leave a set on for decades, and some will say that will only improve the nature of that instrument!🎸

Another reason why I asked that Question is that when I had my Hondo guitar I once had a set of strings on this guitar for about 8 to 9 months and it never went out of tune. So I did finally change the strings and the neck needed looking at.

I think that would work well! Sometimes I use the fretted note, and sometimes I use the harmonic. Sometimes both! As for strobe tuners, I know they're the most accurate, but I still prefer my boss and Korg tuners.
Rob , how does changing the neck effect intonation? Should you shoot for 25.5 “ from nut to saddle ? Making sure the distance from but to the 12th fret is the same as 12th to the saddle?
Not sure! I guess that's not the way I think about it. I never take any actual measurements into consideration. Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding your question?

Yo Mark! Just remember that intonation is always the LAST step. Think of it like the finishing touch. Every adjustment you make, in terms of tuning, neck relief, string height, float, etc.., is then finalized by dialing in perfect intonation. Every adjustment you make, will have an affect on your intonation, so therefor it's always the last step.
When to started the higher string was a D , then you made the intonation adjustment and you tuned it to C 🤔

What happens when I I run out of saddle space and it’s still to the flat side, I tried stretching the string, but no luck, it’s the A string on a Jackson JS32T King V…
Maybe try starting over. Remove the string, reposition the saddle to around its midway position, put on a NEW string, tune and stretch the hell out of it, then try setting the intonation again.
