- Intonating guitar Les Paul style | How to intonate a guitar
In this video I talk about intonation! I demonstrate the process of intonating a guitar, in particular intonating a Les Paul style guitar using my Vintage V100. However, the principles demonstrated can be used as help to set guitar intonation on any electric guitar.
Hopefully after watching this video you should have a fairly clear idea of how to set guitar intonation, and avoid your instrument driving you mad by being in tune in one place on the neck but not another!
When you've watched this video and your guitar is perfectly in tune and intonated, why not take a look at some of my Guitar Soloing Tips tutorial videos! Here's a link to the playlist....

Can’t believe after years of playing I still haven’t figured this out yet. I was getting so frustrated. Thanks for the tutorial.
AFTER SO MANY YEARS I'M LEARNING THANKS SO MUCH.
So slick how you explained how easy this is not as hard as some people think it is.
Thank you, I was about to send my guitar off to a shop
You're welcome!
just found this video, going to try this when i get home from work today. hopefully, it should save me a trip to the guitar shop.
Thanks so much for posting this. Will try this on my Les Paul, which I haven't intonated since buying it three decades ago. You've explained it very clearly and I like the FFF mnemonic.
Nice one, Paul. FFF. That’s great. I always have trouble remembering which way to move the saddle. Not any more!
Thanks. Glad to be of help!
Thanks for FFF. One thing to note, a lot of folks will intonate guitars in playing position as it can make a difference.
You made this so easy. Great explanation of how it's done . Thank you so much for sharing Sir..
Wow, best demonstration I've seen yet! Thanks!
FFF is an immediate gamechanger, always had to try and error my way to proper intonation. Great Video!!!
Damn.. so much pleasant to hear your speach ) That smooth and perfect british accent. Nice job mate)
Thank you. I find my voice quite irritating; I guess everyone does when they hear their own recorded speech! Thanks for your kind words though.
@@PaulDouglasMusician so true )
Superb and clear explanation of the intonation and how to do it. Thank you.
Well thanks for the video and here is the trouble i am running into:
B string is too sharp on the 12th fret and i have moved the saddle all the way back and it is stiill sharp , so what to do now?
Loose the string, move the saddle all the way to the front, tune it and then try to tune it again?
Thanks so much. Really helped me out with the problem I was having keep up the good work
Nice and helpful video. Good way to remember which way to move saddles, quite like your method
flat= forward
like you fall flat on your face
sharp= back
if something is sharp you pull back from it
Excellent and very helpful . Thank you Paul.
Very easy to understand. Thanks so much.
With the tiny gold screws on my Wolf (WLP750) even with flashlight and magnifying glass I couldn’t get a good slot or Phillips screw contact to turn. That gold paint, I guess. Detuning and pulling off the E String, a very small Phillips screwdriver got the turn. I must say overall I am very impressed with the Wolf version of the Les Paul. Thanks for your video.
What a great video. this is exactly what I needed (I think lol). My LP sounds a bit wonky on the G string when playing power chords. Will be giving this a go later. Thanks again!
Thanks Paul! From... Paul! Respect!
Thanks you so much this genuinely helped me more than any tutorial I have ever seen thank you so much
Better than the last video on a different channel that I watched with only captions and annoying music playing.
Thank you so much - it was so helpful 🤩
Yes, good job! Thanks for that!!!
Perfect. I recently raised my far bar where the strings initially slide into (sorry, I don't know the term). Now I've noticed it's not as in tune when playing up high. Must of tweaked the intonation so I'm going to attempt to correct it. Perfect and succinct guide. Thanks!
This is so very helpful. Thank you so much!
Thank you. I’ve gotten a couple acoustic guitars but I’ve recently bought a Epiphone Special 11 and I had no knowledge of inotation was but I do now. I will try to remember “FFF” from now on but if asked I will show them your video. Thanks again.
Quick and well done. Thanks
good job sir. have just watched a much longer video on this very topic which was loaded with irrelevant information and featured a very poor explanation. the handy mnemonic was the icing on the cake, thanks again
Glad it was helpful! Wish I could remember where I first heard that mnemonic so I could credit whoever came up with it.
AWESOME VIDEO MY FRIEND !! I LEFT YOU LIKE NUMBER ONE !!
Thanks!
Nice one cheers. You are a legend.
Hi mate, first time watching one of your videos and I immediately subscribed! First class tip on intonation which is going straight into my setup. Thank you and keep up the good work 👍
Thank you so much! 😊
Fretted Flat Forward : that rocks thx
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP ..
Cool! Have a nice day😉
Thanks!
You are awesome!
Thank you thank you!
This is great stuff!!!
Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial! Recently bought a Matt Heafy Epiphone Custom 7. it's short scale length calls for beefy strings. I upped the gauge and it sound so bad lol. Intonated, and it sounds amazing!
i'm doing this when i get home!
Thanks Paul! I've always wondered about intonation, and your video has explained it well. Subbed
something so many people fail to do, so important especially on cheaper guitars
Thanks! And that's so true; been guilty of that myself 😊
Thanks for this video Sir
Thanks for this!
Great video. I just dropped string gauges on my sg and realized that has thrown off my intonation. Very happy with the gauge drop (low for an sg but I think I enjoy it more). I went from 11-48 to 9-42. Might go up to 10-46 not sure yet but I sure to like playing it better like this after 5 years with the heavy
Good work - I'm on to it! Thanks
Good video!!!! 😎🙋🙌😎🔧🔧
Thanks!
Cheers! Gonna try this later. I've had an Epi Les Paul for a few years and it's never been properly in tune.
Thank you
Thank you for making this; it was very helpful. However, the G string upwards on my Epiphone Special II won't intonate at all. When I turn the screws I can _see_ the clamps turning but the strings will always be sharp to the same degree at the 12th fret.
Fff that's awesome
So simple, so obvious, so often overlooked.
You did not check the fretted 12th against the 12th harmonic, and that must be done also ;)
This was realy helpful but how do you tell if the 12th fret is in tune or not?
My problem is that my freted low E is reading at a sharp D it's pissing me reyt off
Hey Paul great video. But i have a problem, I know this video was about 5 years ago and you may not be a guitar repairist. BUT whenever I move my saddle the pitch of the string does not change. It's like the saddle is just sliding along the string and not actually pulling it. I was wondering if you have a solution to this.
a couple of things here. one, you need to set the guitar up completely first. if it was already setup before and is now trending sharp or flat, you should adjust the truss rod first as that is the likely culprit on the les paul. once that is done, then intonate it if needed. the other thing is that you should never do this while it is laying flat like that. you should do it in the playing/hanging position because most guitar necks will move ever so slightly while laying like that. same for any tuning. end rant.
What do I do if there's no more room to screw in the screw, but the sound is still not in tune?
I tuned and intinated my guitar to as close as I could get it and it's still out of tune/ sound but the intination is perfect? Are some of the strings not in right or what idk?
Fretted: flat? Forward!
Gr8 acronym, very useful - thank you! Acronyms and silly littke word play phrases are behind the most longheld useful little life hack codes I've found over the years. For me, at least.
Like "Lefty Loosie -Righty Tighty" or "Never Eat Soggy Weetbix".
Anyway, thx for the lesson. I kinda knew most of it already, but always got lost, never quite sure if I was turning the screws the right way or not. Eventually I couldn't trust my own ear and would pack it in as "good enough".
Hey, question. I've ordered a new guitar and it's a Gibson SG Special. It has the "lightning tailgate" but no tun-o-matic... Any tips for maximizing whatever intonation I can get?
Cheers 😎👍
Hi, if i use the tuner on my phone and get the guitar in tune perfectly and play the 12th fret, its nowhere near it should but it sounds Spot on. Can you tell me why that is?
Ok, so my saddle is all the way back and the guitar is still sharp...what can I do?
When the 12th fret note is in tune then then the 3rd and 5th fret notes will be too low.
I have a Epiphone Les Paul custom pro tuxedo , I have had it intonated twice in the first year of owning it. I use EB extra slinky's and have checked the neck for any out of whack problem's but it look's pretty straight with the slotted straight edge. I have also checked the fret's and nothing seem's to be out of place no buzzing. The problem is that within a few weeks the guitar goes out of intonation. I was wondering if possibly the wood used was still too moist and not allowed to dry long enough, it was made in Korea by world music. My roomie who has been playing for 45 year's said he has never seen a guitar act in this way before. I wonder if anyone has any advice for me about what i can do to fix it before I just give it away to someone who has the time and knowledge to fix this.
Hmmm...strange. Can anyone with more knowledge than me help here?
Nice video, but I notice when you fret the string it makes a “warble” sound. I have that same problem with my guitar and it’s driving me crazy. Can you make a video on that?
That means one (or both) of your pickups are too close to the string. The magnets on the pickups are interfering with the movement of the string when it's vibrating.
Nikkuh is tunin with the amp on? for real?
Greetings from 2020!
Thank you for this very simple tutorial! I’ve done this twice now, and I must say, I can’t move on without doing this after setting up a new set of strings.
There is one question that I have.
That phrase, “Fret.Flat.Forward”...what if you’ve maxed out on your saddle if one of your strings is experiencing, “Fret.Sharp.Backward”?
How would you fix that?
Thank you advance.
I'll tell you brother. When you experience this issue either which way, whether you're moving your saddle up or down, if you run out of room to keep moving u or down, you need to:
• stop what you're doing and Loosen whatever string you are tuning
• loosen the string enough for you to be able to pick up the string and pop it off of your saddle completely
• unscrew the saddle screw completely off and set it to the side
• Take your saddle out and turn it upside down or another words flip it around.
**** This is for for your saddle to move longer. Ultimately the flat part of the saddle will be longest facing away or towards the butt end of your guitar. In other words if you run out of room on the top e string and you look down and the flat part of your saddle is facing up then turning around where it is facing down and it will have longer vibration travel on that e string*****
• regardless of what I said above, you have already tooken your string off and saddle screw, and lastly you've already flipped your saddle around or was supposed to. So even if what I said above goes against the fact that you're saddle is facing one way or the other you might as well try it flipped so put your screw back on the saddle
•put your string back on the saddles string seat
• tune that string back to its proper open stanard tuning
• continue your intonation
I probably could have shortened that whole comment to a simple just flip your particular saddle around facing the opposite direction for longer length. Haaa
Does this affect string height and buzzing?
Hello. Tks for the video. Quick question. I’ve intonated the string at the 12 fret, but other frets fail to intonate. Like if I play an A chord on the 2nd fret, it’s in tune, but on the 14th fret is not. Any suggestions? (Epiphone LP, ultra II)
I'm not sure if you mentioned this butyou really should only do intonation on a new pre stretched set of strings and not go adjusting intonation on an already worn set of strings. Reason being when you put a fresh set on ,guess what, your intonation will be set to the worn set and then have to do the whole process again
I didn’t know that, I was wondering why it wasn’t working
is it possible if it's started getting out of tune after the 12th fret? or did i just made a mistake somewhere? is it possible to use the same technique as you did in the video?
Can you tell please which note should show on the tuner every string when you press on the 12th fret to know its already correctly intonated
For example, if u are intonating E string then open E should be the same note as the one at the 12th fret (E for both)
So....if the adjustmemt is all the way back and fretted notes are still sharp, the guitar is kinda rooted?
The same is happening to me but the other way around (all the way up and still flat)
Clutch!
Id pay someone to fix mine after i tried raising the bridge
F.F.F.
Fretted, Flat, Forward
There's way more than that when intonating
Who cares about what you're gonna do what you're going to film to show us how to do it
All these years playing an out of tune guitar and it was that easy? Shame on me.
lying.?
That did not help. There is more that can be done. There has to be or I'm switching to violin.
play it and show us how it sounds in tune
