So, I'm an idiot and I couldn't for the life of me remember which notes didn't have sharps, even though it's literally two letters out of seven, until - UNTIL, right - until I remembered that episode of The Simpsons where Homer has that barbershop quartet and they're called "The Be Sharps", and B and E are the two notes which don't have sharps. Thanks again, Simpsons, for adding value to my life. And thank you, Kevin, for teaching me how to not get a girlfriend but to sort of muddle through knowing a pentatonic scale.
I've recently bought an electric guitar even though I have no clue about guitars as I play the piano (nothing serious, just amateur) and it was extremely intimidating to wrap my head around the basics and terminology. But you explain everything in the most concise and easy way to understand. Kevin, if you're reading this, and I hope you do... I'm forever grateful for the amazing effort you put up in your videos and I'll be anticipating more videos from you in the future. Your channel is criminally underrated ! Your channel's now on my radar, fucking subscribed mate ! ❤
I wish my music teacher back in school made stuff this easy to understand, i would've picked up guitar much earlier if they were this helpful. Great vid man!
I started guitar about the time you dropped this vid and I was recommended you early on. I wasn't sure about your channel at first since it seems you're building it currently, but after watching many videos I can honestly say yours are some of the most clear, simple, and entertaining. Thanks man
great video. in addition to this, for D, G and (especially) B strings, you could use "reference points" horizontally. so you learn for example the notes on the 5th fret (except for the 3d string, that you use the 4th fret....at this point you teach that these are notes you use for tuning the other strings) and if you want to know what is the note on the 7th fret, 2nd string, for example, you know that this note is 2 frets higher or 1 whole step higher then the note on the 5th fret 2nd string (E note, which you are going to memorize, because it's the same note as the 1st open string). So you find that note is F#, one whole step higher than E. Anyway, it's a way that I find easier to find the notes on these other strings, especially on the B string. Because with the D and G strings the "octave way" you showed is the most useful.
I'm sad I didn't see your channel when I was first learning years ago, I'm taking steps back to refine knowledge your videos are dope, I hope you blow up soon! 💯 (More than you already have lol)
Thank you!! Amazingly easy to understand. I really appreciate the work you put into these. They have been a huge help in my musical journey. I'm looking forward to more great content!
I know there’s lot of comments saying the same but JESUS this is THE video everyone needs to watch if they’re struggling with this. This has everything you need to build the framework of memorising this daunting stuff.
Real good instruction, and what you said if I’m correct is to memorize the fretboard without having to think about what note (s) it is, I’m real good on the E, A strings, l have to get better at D, G , B strings, I’ll be using your method as well, again real instruction, clear and concise, very much appreciated.
Quite literally the best lesson I've had on this topic. 10 minutes and I got all the answers I needed to understand notes, octaves and the fretboard in a basic manner. Amazing video!
oh my god thank u sm!!! i had realized the pattern for the first tip by accident when practicing memorizing but the B string tip was GOLDEN!!! thank u so much ❤ love that your video is straight to the point and u give such clear and helpful tips :) hope your channel grows!!
Another pro tip, when moving across the strings on the same fret, if you find a B note, the next under it on that fret is E, the next string is A, than D, it always spells BEAD. Remember, B, E, A, D, G, C, F. And when ever you're playing any of those notes, going down across the strings always repeats the pattern. I've probably done a horrible job explaining this but eh, there's this idiots 1 good tip lol
i memorize notes on the fretboard by repeating the alphabet order. Difficulty is when i place my fingers on the board it's really slow having to sequence notes on each string. I'll practice using your technique to learn notes. Thanks a lot!
Memorizing the notes is a lot easier if you know the basics of the piano keys. I would suggest learning the piano keys first that is just ABCDEFG and the half notes in between, and memorizing the fretboard will be a lot easier.
I made up song lyrics where each line starts with the letter of the note. So the A string would look like: Apples are tasty, Apples are sharp. Bananas are pointy, Coconuts are hard. Coconut sandwiches are hard to eat, Daikon radishes, aren’t very sweet. etc. For the sharps I make the second word start with an “S” or a “B” for flats. It’s been scientifically proven that the more ridiculous the lyrics are the easier they are to remember.
I love the video, but may I know why you say the musical alphabet starts with an A? Because I, and my musicians friends and teachers say that the musical alphabet starts with a C
When you learn to type, you already know half of what you're doing when you type, you know the words. It doesn't work with music because you don't know the words yet.
Now you can use the rest of your life to learn the positions without looking .. touch all the a flats like touching your nose and while your doing that apply that note to your sheet music . Music is poetry in its purest form .
*Your definition of a note is false. You have defined a tone.* TONES are NOT NOTES! Notes are tones at duration. G A B C D E F♯ are tones. -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- :𝄞 ----- ♩ -------- -------------------- Show above is a G note. It is a note because the symbol denotes time, a quarter note.

Thanks Kevin. Very informative for a newbie.
This is the best demonstration of the fretboard I’ve come across. Ty man!
Been waiting my whole life for someone to lay it out like this
I've watched a few 'memorize the fretboard' tutorials on YT. This was by far the best.
Real good instruction, and what you said if I’m correct is to memorize the fretboard without having to think about what note (s) it is, I’m real good on the E, A strings, l have to get better at D, G , B strings, I’ll be using your method as well, again real instruction, clear and concise, very much appreciated.

Neat trick on how to find the note names via backtracking. It's so obvious, I'm ashamed I didn't think it up myself! Thanks Kevin.
This course is perfect. I’ve been looking for something like this for years. Thanks so much for putting this together

Finally, a fretboard explanation and memorization technique I understand. Thanks much!
Now that the semester is over I’ll be able to learn all day long!
I've noted down a lot of notes about notes.
It’s always good to take notes about notes so you can refer to your notes in the future

Excellent tutorial!
How does one play in the same key all across the fretboard? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I made up song lyrics where each line starts with the letter of the note.
So the A string would look like:
Apples are tasty,
Apples are sharp.
Bananas are pointy,
Coconuts are hard.
Coconut sandwiches are hard to eat,
Daikon radishes, aren’t very sweet.
etc.
For the sharps I make the second word start with an “S” or a “B” for flats.
It’s been scientifically proven that the more ridiculous the lyrics are the easier they are to remember.
that was so helpful!
Really well explained. ❤
Your special 🎸thank you
Thanx. Good lesson.
Why is there no B# or E#? And why are those symbols used for sharps/flats?
This is great. Thank you.
I love the video, but may I know why you say the musical alphabet starts with an A? Because I, and my musicians friends and teachers say that the musical alphabet starts with a C
Very useful!

You have to be musically smart for you are wearing my captain Billy Joel’s t shirt. 😂
It is not the best course, I prefer learning BEADGCF from string 6 to string one. And learn place D and then ABC and EFG
fretboard pdf has gone :/
Not easy to me ! Cause you have sharps and flats .
when you realize that visual note is, same as piano *insert mind blowing meme here
