I've shared that my experience with ditching the dye is been so much easier than continuing to dye my hair would have been. BUT! In the spirit of intellectual honesty, it's good to talk about the challenging bits and share some tips for how to deal.

Not only have I gone down the rabbit hole of style, I’ve pitched a tent. I dressed very conservatively with the blonde hair and found it made the blonde more serious. Now, with the grey melange, I find that, and excuse the term, too old and stuffy somehow. I’m really into more of the Isabel marant vibe, bigger bolder geometric jewelry and just overall more modern and less classic. Although I still mix. Girl’s got limits, ya know. 😘

Yes, I know just what you mean about stuffy. I’ve always veered toward the classics to balance out other elements of my vibe. Some of those styles just don’t feel as good now.
I have always loved Isabel Marant, too, but that look didn’t quite work before. Now I’m very open to it.

@@InfinitegardenbyBethK You mentioned in one of your other videos about being cat called, and I think the conservative look I was sporting, was part of that. It's like I wanted attention, but not the wrong kind. From an overall societal perspective grey, and ageing women, is somehow synonymous with irrelevance. And yet now, I feel more relevant and more like myself than ever. I look forward to being part of the solution and know that you're welcome at my camp anytime.

I've found since going grey/silver/white that I have to wash my hair every second day as opposed to just twice a week because it only looks good for 2 days and then it starts to look darker and in need of a wash. I use purple shampoo and conditioner about every 3rd wash and so far have had no issues with yellowing.
I do think that you need to keep your hair trimmed/cut into a style more when it's grey to keep it looking more stylish than when I was a brunette where I could just let it grow and it looked fine. I would love to be able to wear a short punky pixie cut but my hair is too fine for that and it would never stay up so I have a graduated Bob short at the back and longer at the front. Getting some height at the crown is my current obsession.
Fashion wise I have been re-assessing my wardrobe and I've been wearing much more vibrant colours than before. I used to wear a lot more black but as I am 60 I find black too harsh for my complexion and navy is more forgiving. I think it's good to do a wardrobe "pruning" every decade and have a re-think about what still suits us and what we should discard.
It's an interesting journey but I am loving my new look and would NEVER go back to dyeing every 2-3 weeks as I had to do because I have so much white/silver hair when I was dyeing it brown it was coming out a horrible orangey/brown colour which I absolutely hated. I now find myself looking at women with strange unnatural coloured hair and thinking, just go for it it's so freeing, and I would far rather age gracefully and stylishly than try and look 20 years younger because my face would not match my hair and wouldn't fool anyone.

    • @InfinitegardenbyBethK

Thank you for this thoughtful comment. 💗 I have also experienced the appearance of darkening in between washes. It’s so obvious right after I wash it and it’s brilliant again.
I know what you mean about preferring bright colors. I’ve been obsessed with wearing black my whole life and I’m beginning to feel that it might not be my best color-navy is so much better.

Going through the grey hair transition myself and YES, it has triggered a style overhaul. With my natural hair colour now framing my face, my skin looks different and I realise the hair dye colour I had been using for years was the wrong colour. So, I am now trying new makeup and new colours to wear. But like you, Beth, I am questioning my overall style and am trying new things. It is fun and something I never thought would come with "growing out grey hair". Please keep making videos on makeup colours, jewellery choices and clothes you are now wearing as opposed to before. Shelley, yes! What I like about it is that it doesn’t suggest that your body is wrong and needs to be corrected. It’s more like, “you are short, so you might like the way shorter lines look on you” or “you look tall or long and therefore a long monochrome dress might not overwhelm your frame as it would a shorter person”. That’s super cursory but kind of the idea. It’s about seeing yourself and working with what you have, not trying to fix it. I think that’s a better way to go in general, plus it helps you to avoid jumping onto trends that might not flatter your unique beauty.

Fashion and style tips from you are really useful even if you dont have grey hair. There i a bad attidue that grey means old but all it means is your body needed minerals and vitamins. For example did you know B12 deficiencys for people(mostly under 39)results in grey hair.. low vitamin d deficiency contributes to going grey too. It's not just age.. i have been researching the reasons for grey hair. A lady who had kidney problems went white but after kidney dialysis she got her natural dark color back. There is people who go grey at 17. And some people never go grey. More men than women go grey before 50. There is a lot to learn for us about going grey. I can't wait for the grey hair stigma to be gone as its just another color in people's hair. We need to be more understanding of what happens to our hair and be nicer to each other and accept each regardless of hair color

Hi Beth! Great video. Even though I went silver quite young, I’m definitely relating to your style vibe comments. I have found that I cannot get away with certain colors or styles these days because, combined with my silver hair, I simply look too grandma-ish. (Nothing against Grandma!) For example, I love baby pink. I can no longer wear it. Same with lace. 😂 I just see my grandma in the mirror if I try things like that. I wish I could wear scarves, but they are really unflattering on me. Would love to see more on the topic of body and style. Also, love your ficcares. I can absolutely relate. I am liking lace on me, but it’s really about the cut-it has to be sharply tailored and somewhat light weight. I’m finding anything boxy or bulky isn’t helping me at all (partly because of my frame).
Side note: your hair sounds lavish and glorious. You must take great care of it. 🤩

@@InfinitegardenbyBethK hi! Yes, I have a few ficcares. I’ve had them for about fifteen years, and they have been great. I mostly wear my hair in a bun held with a fork these days, but you’ve inspired me to break out the ficcares. My hair like is my identity, if that makes sense. I stopped dyeing in my 20s and it was one of my best life decisions, honestly! Then I decided to grow it long because I wanted to inspire other women to ditch the dye. It isn’t always easy to deal with long silver hair, in my case, it’s much more finicky than it was when it had pigment. But I wouldn’t feel like myself if I kept it short, even though it mostly lives in a bun. 😅 I love your style and how you present yourself. I have been wearing my natural white/gray hair for 7 years now and I do notice yellowing around my face. Took me a while to make the connection that apart from sun exposure, this was likely from my daily SPF moisturiser or the few times I do wear foundation and it touches my hair. Just putting it out there as a possible contributor to yellowing.

My decision to go Grey a few years ago at 55 was based on my assumption that caring for Grey would be easier. I do love my grey; but it’s definitely not easier 🤪.
I’m blonde so I colored at home @3mos. My Greys tend to turn yellow with any heat or UV so keeping them gorgeous is a challenging - balancing heat exposure and experimenting with various purple shampoos and conditioners. I also feel it’s a trade off of having a unique look which I like and having a style which is slightly aging. To stay stylish I cut it short and modern … but with my short cut I can’t cut my hair at home any more. My salon bills have gone way up since short cuts need to be kept in shape every 4-6 weeks to look good. It’s all a trade off I guess.
So far I don’t have any plans to go back to blonde … and my hair stylist refuses to do it 😂. Can’t wait to hear what others are thinking about this. 💜👩🏼‍🦳

I’m going to try the Karastase heat protectant you mentioned. I will never go back to the dye again though. I am recently all silver- not too happy that somehow my blond hair seemed to forever conceal all the gray hair under it for many many months. I decided to razor cut it into a shag which thankfully I like. The gray hair texture is so foreign to me. I dont dare put any purple product on my hair bc when using it over blonde it dried my hair out terribly. Every time I catch my silver hair in the mirror its a surprise - still adjusting to it. The freedom from dying my hair is worth all the struggle. I still dress the same way I did in highschool - boho mixed with classic blazers and funky skirts, fun jewelry. But my make up has changed and its fun to mix new cooler shades now.
