After the triumphant ending of the first one, the melancholy of this one left me too far down. The studio really needed another Burton/Keaton/Elfman flick (perhaps less indulgent on Burton’s end) to get the Billy Dee Williams Two-Face movie we deserved. Instead, Warner caved to the toy companies and gave “safe” but awful visions in the next 2. Ugh. Such missed opportunity.
Not many people realise, but this film is actually incredibly interesting thematically. While the 1989 movie was more about how Batman and the Joker are polar opposites of each other, this film represented how similar the three leads are to each other. They are all outside of society and therefore can relate to each other, but they are on vastly different paths and therefore can't completely connect. Catwoman was once a part of society but became disillusioned with it, Batman deliberately isolated himself from society and the Penguin was forcefully removed from it. What's incredibly poignant about this scene is its one of three scenes in which each of the three characters have their harsh exterior's broken away and their lonely, frightened under-bellys are revealed. Catwoman's is revealed to her enemy and to Batman, the Penguin's is revealed only to Batman and Batman's is revealed only in solitude, his only true companion being Alfred, which is (in the context of the Burton films) the unfortunate tragedy of his existence
That was Selina’s cat. She was literally giving Batman her cat not only so he can have a small part of her but to signify that she’s no longer going to be Selena Kyle and cat woman she’s only going to be Catwoman from here on out and live in the shadows. She can no longer take care of her cat as she will always be on the run.
this is probably my favorite christmas movie- always gets a watch or ten at holiday season, sometimes with burtons edward scissorhands as a double feature
Fun fact: this line was changed in the Polish translation because the word for "men" was simply the sexless "people" so focusing on the other gender would sound weird. Instead, Bruce says "...and cats" which I honestly think is much more fitting here.
Maybe the saddest ending in a super-heroes movie ever: the heroe has won, but he's still a very lonely and disturbed man, the person he loves has dissapeared, and the villain has died without having met his parents and being hated and rejected by all :'( But it's still awesome, and I think this is the best Batman movie ever.
Am I the only one who thinks the cat was a goodbye gift from Selina? Like it was saying "We can't be together, but here is something to remember me by"
Yes I agree there I think Bruce and Selina did leave on kinda good terms so giving miss kitty to Bruce will definitely have something for Bruce to remember her by not just his bats.
There was a different script from.the Batman Returns writers which she was supposed to be in but it didn't pan out. I remember reading it online back in the day.
Nathaniel Stamper Still the best Batman in my opinion, just shrouded in mystery always in pain tiptoeing the fine line between brilliance and insanity. Most interesting and intimidating Batman. Not mainstream or easy to read. Mysterious just as Batman was made to be.
So sad, last Batman movie to me. Keaton and Burton were just epic. Like Keaton's batman and Bruce wayne far more then any other, no competition on that what so ever. And with Tim Burton's magic fairy tale vibe and mix or era's look of Gotham city, nothing came close to matching it. And Many people think Tim just winged it, he didn't, at all. Jack as Joker, you can see interviews of Jack saying he read the comics all the time, he was into Batman before the movie. And Keaton knew what he was doing as well, he did not play that dumb no killing rule. He was a fucking badass all way round when he was Batman. Plus I liked how Keaton was into Bruce Wayne more then the Batman. You really got to see what made Bruce into Batman and why he just goes out to kill ass, for the sack of good. Even in this scene you see he has a heart, hes not the all tuff guy crap we got with the cartoons and other movies. His two movie were like a real life comic book come to life, and it was adult themed, not kid themed. In the end the studio did not want a 3 from the two, they wanted something not so dark, more of a family movie, and we all saw how that worked out :( . Damn studio asshole fucking up everything. From what I saw of what of would have been the 3rd movie, it was going to kick ass. Pfeiffer back as cat women, Billy Dee Williams becoming two face, Rene Russo as batwomen. Plus Keaton as batman with a gray bat suit like in the cartoon, and Tim directing again. I wish so bad that got made. Rare when a sequel is as good as the first like this movie was, only leads me to believe the 3rd would of at least met the bar of one and two.
IIIJFRIII true on everything you just said however I don’t think burton wanted to do a third batman film because on some interviews he has said he felt soo much pressure from the studio & just to get the film done & stuff on batman returns that he just flat out said no to a third one
A lot of people disagree, but this is my favorite Batman film. I know it deviates from the comics, but I appreciated and enjoyed the different stylistic approach to the Batman mythos. It has such a dark, quirky vibe that's integral to the Batman character, which unfortunately the new Nolan films lacked.
It's important to look at this film as a different interpretation of the character. This isn't the Batman from the comics, its its own beast. If you want comic book Batman check out the 89 film, or the Nolan films.
This end scene always makes me cry. And I think the main reason for me personally is because I use to have a black cat who sadly died (in my arms) at the age of 16. Even though we now have another black cat, I still think about old Sooty. Other reasons why I think this scene is sad is because of Danny Elfman's wonderful music scoring, it was Michael Keaton's final scene and also because Michael Gough is sadly no longer among us. May he rest in peace.
right? this movie gets no love! it's still my favorite bat man movie, even more than 2008 one :) the mixture of camp and seriousness was so unique, thanks to Tim Burton... but the three main characters did phenomenal acting Michelle Pfeiffers cat women, Danny Devito's Penguin and Michael Keaton as batman - they all did superb jobs..
I think there is a symbolism behind the fact that cat woman's suit at the end seems not to be done from pieces sewed together but it is a new whole suit. Like after everything she has endure, she has reborn redeemed and stronger.
This ending alone, as well as the ending of the 1989 film, would explain why I think Burton's movies are better than the Nolan ones. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but the bittersweet ending of this movie just made it all the more memorable for me, and while the new films definitely had their great parts, I still would prefer these two films with Michael Keaton.
There really was a certain grandeur in the BATMAN of 1989, and this BATMAN RETURNS sequel had a story of regret and missed opportunities which hit the heart. Younger fans who hate on or mock us for still cherishing these original films would, in 20 years down the road, know how it feels when THEY get attacked by younger generations for still loving the Nolan trilogy even as a new version of Batman may already be all the rage.
I think the Burton and the Nolan movies both have their pros and cons. The Nolan movies handle the character of Bruce Wayne better and give the viewer more of an emotional investment to the story. The Nolan movies also have better storytelling. The Burton movies, on the other hand, are much more visually pleasing and they don't take themselves too seriously which makes them more fun to watch. Danny Elfman's music is far superior to Hans Zimmers and the romantic pairings are much more interesting to watch in the Burton movies than they are in the Nolan movies (probably due to the actors having more chemistry).
Ed Vega I agree I grew up with the first 2 films and they are classic the 3rd one was okay but it wasn't better because it was not made by Tim Burton the 4th one was terrible George Clooney as 'Batman?" The newer versions are awesome but too long. You are right my friend Michael Keaton was and will always be the best Batman period!
Michael Keaton may not have been physically imposing but he didn't need any gimmicks like slurring his enunciation just to sound "tough."' The third one was so-so and the fourth was terrible, absolutely terrible. But the two Burton films were just classic! Cheers!
As much as I like the Nolan films, I miss solemn moments like these from the Burton Batman. The Nolan trilogy gave us many great dialogs and quotes, but that's because nobody ever stop talking in those films. Also, This scene is the reason why this movie has a permanent place on my Christmas Movies list.
@@UglukTheUruk Exactly, and cinema should be about visual and sensory experience. Excessive dialogue is for the theatre and literature, and that's what Nolan never understood.
@@DeepScreenAnalysis I like Christopher Nolan as a director, but his films are always filled with so much expository dialogue where characters just explain nearly everything to the audience instead of just showing.
I personally prefer the Tim Burton Batman films because they are more comic book accurate in terms of character persona and characteristics where as Nolan's films tend to shy away from the original comic book characteristics. But either way the Nolan films were still great in they're own way.
You see ladies and gents, even Bruce Wayne has a heart for Gotham City’s kitties!! Gotta love a guy who has room in his heart for kittens, like myself. ♥️🐈⬛
This was the Burton/Elfman masterpiece. After all these years, still one of the best movies I've seen. Forget Batman and the comic books for an instant. Appreciate it for the disturbing psychological study it is, produced by a creator at his apex, suffering of a nearly crippling depression. It's a tragedy. Where all people end up dead, or alone and worse than at the start of the narrative arc. You cannot get darker than this. It's a depressing study of the human condition, of misery and abandonment, or injustice and loneliness, of greed and revenge. I almost feel bad for the intelligent, sensitive children who watched it.
So true. I recall my first experience with BATMAN RETURNS. When I had finished watching it, I was just shocked, speechless, and blown away. In the end, I didn't feel like I was watching a sequel to BATMAN 89. It felt like it was much, much more than a sequel. Whereas BATMAN 89 was a dark movie, BATMAN RETURNS wasn't just dark, it was also, in someways, psychological. I don't even know why I'm trying to compare the two movies, because your comment has explained it perfectly. :)
that certainly didnt bother me as a kid, it was probably the most rewatched movie in the series, though i must admit having a soft spot for batman forever (perfect popcorn-cinema, regardless of comic book discussions)
Could not agree more. Batman was very good, but Batman Returns is just a whole new level. Masterpiece. It´s not only my favourite Batman movie but also the greatest thing Burton´s ever pulled off. Sadly, Warner thought it was too "dark". They obviously forgot the whole thing was about the darkest of all superheroes.
I was one of those children and to this day elfmans score in returns stirs deep deep emotions i just didnt fully understand as a child. I was fascinated by this movie but at the same time it used to make me feel incredibly sad. The first scene where penguins parents abandon him was a terrifieng concept for a kid to get his head around.
This was the perfect ending to the Keaton/Burton era of Batman. Literally Keaton and Burton driving away from the role into the snowy night. Burton understood Batman in a way no one else has, not even Nolan. That Batman is dark and twisted and that life sometimes sucks. Catwoman was perfect for Batman and they could never be together, and the quick glimpse of her in the alley was the tease of what eluded Keaton's Batman, which was happiness. Returns is in many ways still the best Batman movie.
Totally agree. Nolan is awesome, but he was not able to capture the loneliness, the darkness and the gloomy vibe that a character like Batman requires. Besides, the whole cast was just flawless.
I love everything about this scene. Keaton's acting the music the cinematography. Don't care what anyone says nobody beats tim burton as far as his sets, color palettes photography etc.
Part of me is glad Burton never made a part three, because Burton's series ended perfectly with this scene. But I would of loved to see Billy dee Williams as Two Face and Robin Williams as Riddler.
Burton should have got a chance to make a third film and properly complete his Batman series. But nope, parents had to ruin it because they didn't bother to see the PG-13 rating and do their research on the Batman character when the movie came out.
The problem with that sentiment is that the franchise was (even with the original) intended to have mass-market appeal. You can't expect a parent to go to a Batman film and not be surprised when it opens with a pair of adults being horrified by their child (which killed(?) a cat) and threw it into the river in a desperate attempt to get rid of it. That's saying nothing of the overall level of overt violence - the Batmobile lighting a guy on fire, Penguin biting one of his campaign staffers on the nose (which lots of blood afterwards), Selina/the Ice Princess being shoved out of a high-rise building and the camera following her plunge all the way to the ground, etc. I love Returns, and it's probably my second-favorite Batman film behind Dark Knight. Yet, I can't see WB continuing with the creative team as it stood. It was a much darker, edgier take that is probably the closest we've seen to having a true R-rated sequel, but it was never going to fly with audiences who were taking their kids to it. Especially for a franchise that prided itself (at the time) on merchandising deals like the McDonald's Happy Meal toys and the Kenner action figures. You shouldn't have to do research on a fictional character, especially one that's been marketed to an all-ages audience for nearly a century, and have to worry about whether the film you're seeing is too violent for your kids. A fair amount of the violence in the '89 film was implied or insinuated - Returns was a significant jump up in the violence quota.
The most bleak Batman film ending, but it fit the mood of the movie very well. I love when the score kicks in when Bruce walks back to his car from the alley. The last shot was an obvious set up for a sequel, but instead we got Schumacher, Tommy Lee Jones acting like a complete goof, and friggin Robin.
Yea it's a shame. Sequel to this, with Burton, Keaton and Pfeiffer reprising their roles, and then maybe a Tim Burton take on scarecrow/two face or whoever as the villains would've been amazing.
I actually enjoyed Tommy Lee Jones' performance as Two Face. For what it was, he looked like he was genuinely enjoying it and having fun, compared to the stoic, reserved characters he's predominantly known for portraying.
Truly a movie that was underrated at the time it came out, but as time has gone on people realize just how great it was. The Batman franchise completely went into the toilet after this movie. This was the last great Batman movie for many years to come.
I watched this movie the first time when I was 15. and I thought this was the best Batman movie. The relationship between Bruce and Selina is the best part imo
Max Shreck Oh boy, what about Batman & Robin? That´s some big crap! Sure, Batman Forever looks corny but at least has decent actors and something of the dark ambience of the Burton movies survived but in B&R Joe went loose and almost buried the entire franchise with that cheesy looking and corny dialogues, not mention that horrible leather butts and NIPPLES shots! Jeez, I still have nightmares! Thanks to God warner realized how much they fucked up and hired Nolan.
Max Shreck I think both were fine, probably they would looked better if both costumes wouldn´t be so campy, in fact one of the things that really screwed the characters were the costumes.
Saw this in the theatre with my older sis and dad when I was 9. I can still recall when I saw Catwomans head pop up my jaw hit the floor. Best ending to any Batman film and still one of my faves
The sad thing about this ending is that while it's not the last Batman film, it is entirely the last one with Keaton. So in a way there's this sense of finality, and the despairing thought that we're never going to see this character again.
Just watched this movie for the first time since I was 10. Loved it very sad the studio didn't allow Burton to make a third movie cause of stupid parents complaining of their children having nightmares which this movie wasn't made for children in the first place.
The parents are so stupid for complaining, honestly when I watched it as a kid, I never had any nightmares, and to be honest if the parents weren't complaining at that time, Burton & Keaton should've returned for a third Batman movie. As of now this ending is kinda sad because this is the last scene we saw Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
And then we got two worst Batman movies, Two-Face and Riddler acting like Joker, Neon lights Gotham, and worse of all, bat-credit card, bat-nipples and bat-butts. And now enire Batman fanbase is pissed off. Now, IF Tim Burton makes third Batman movie, he will not called ,,Batman Forever,, because he dosen't like it. He will maybe called ,,Batman Continues,, and after that, he will make ,,proper,, Batman and Robin, Batman Triumphat and Batman Knightfall. Batman Contiues cast: Batman and Robin cast: Michael Keaton---Batman/Bruce Wayne Michael Keaton---Batman/Bruce Wayne Michael Gough---Alfred Michael Gough---Alfred ?---Dick Grayson/Robin ?---Dick Grayson/Robin Billy Dee Williams---Harvey Dent/Two-Face Patrick Stewart---Dr. Victor Freeze/Mr. Freeze Robin Williams---Edward Nygma/Riddler Nicol Kidman---Dr. Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy Batman Triumphat cast: Batman Knightfall cast: Michael Keaton---Batman/Bruce Wayne Michael Keaton---Batman/Bruce Wayne Michael Gough---Alfred Michael Gough---Alfred ?---Dick Grayson/Robin ?---Dick Grayson/Robin ?----Barbara Gordon/Batgirl ?---Barbara Gordon/Batgirl Brad Dourif---Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow Michelle Pfeiffer---Selina Kyle/Catwoman Jack Nicholson---Joker/Batman's hallucination Nathan Jones---Bane ?---Kirk Langstorm/Man-Bat ?---Waylon Jones/Killer Croc And, that's it. And those question marks means that I don't know who will be perfect Robin, Batgirl, Man-Bat and Killer Croc. And Im sure Bane will be perfect in Tim Burton version. You know, criminal mastermind with venom, not some brain-dead zombie who repeats every word you saying.
Tim Burton did a great job, picked the right characters from the comics, the right actors to play them and did a good job making it emotional and the batmany feeling all of us love. this is the batman we all love..
Daniel Medina At least it is in a open world, the sets get old after seeing the same location again and again. Batman, Monarch Theater and Batman Returns, The Square.
Isn't it what Gotham is though? I mean, I get that it's to be more realistic and all, but at least, it would have been good to have both mixed together...it would have been real interesting.
2:10 i almost spit my food out as a 9 year old, back in 92, when I saw that Catwoman was alive. Kept me awake the whole night, in my mind i tried to continue were the movie left us. It is one of the best Christmas movies ever, no doubt about it.
While I think Nolan's films are better from a logistical point of view--and certainly better in terms of script and acting--Nolan's pragmatism totally pales in comparison to Burton's STYLE. Burton captured the exaggerated style and augmented reality of Gotham PERFECTLY with his Art Deco-Gothic aesthetics, which lent the perfect element of theatricality and baroque fantasy necessary to really immerse yourself in a Batman film. And Danny Elfman's score--especially here--blows away anything Hans Zimmer did for all three Nolan films, even the Joker's theme. But does anybody else wonder if that cat was actually someone else's? It wasn't afraid of people, it wasn't all messed up from living on the street? I think Bruce Wayne accidentally kidnapped someone's cat (although he'd likely return it once he saw a report of it missing).
Matthew Robayo Yeah, I watched this again recently and you're right, it IS her cat. That's probably why her essence drew his attention to that alley; she knew he'd take care of her now that she had no home.
But how did Catwoman know that Batman would be coming up that way? She had to have known somehow, since she left her cat there. I guess she knew that she could trust her cat to him, and sure enough, she did just that.
I do wish Bruce and Selina would have gotten together in the end. At least dark knight rises gave Bruce and Selina a happy ending, I always wonder how Selina might have returned in batman forever had Tim burton directed,
And that's exactly why the ending of the Nolan trilogy sucks. It was perfect, minus the ideal happy ending. People will forever like Burton's version where both Bruce and Selina desiring each other, don't end up together at the end making the whole thing more dramatic. In Nolan's version, however, all the symbolism and the lessons of the movie go out the window when Batman not only survives(not that is anything wrong with Bats surviving, he's been known to succeed at impossible tasks because he's Batman), but also gets to retire and live happily ever after. Any true Batman fan knows that Batman will never retire as long as he's alive, he will always linger for more. And any true Batman fan knows that Bruce is not a character to have a happy ending, especially a cheesy and romantic one. To Batman a happy ending is him being alive and beating down criminals, while Alfred calls him mid-fight to ask his master what should he made for dinner. How ironic that both of the 2 best and the 2 most known cinematic series of Batman(the Burton and the Nolan one) end with the same characters(Bruce, Alfred and Selina), only in different situations? In Burton's ending Bruce is sad becasue he believes Selina died while she is out there and Alfred wishes his master "Merry Christmas" whereas in Nolan's ending Alfred goes to a cafe and sees Bruce being well and ending up with Selina. Nolan ressurected Batman's portrayal on the big screen and I love his trilogy, but the one glaring flaw of Dark Knight Trilogy is the bullshit, cheesy happy ever after ending. A complete cop out right at the end. Some people may not like Burton's version of Batman, but at least Burton didn't make an ending for 10 year olds who think the world is all sunshine and rainbows. And what's worse, this is Batman we are talking about, not Superman or anyone. He's the Dark Knight, he doesn't get cheesy and corny endings like that. He's not supposed to, because it ruins everything he stands for. Chill out Batman fans, I am not a hater or anything. It's just my opinion.
Dexter Dawson I personally don't think The Dark Knight Rises is as good as I thought it was back in 2012. The ending felt kind of rushed to me. But I loved Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight is easily one of my favorite movies ever. The Burton films are brilliant, too.
MegaAlexsmith123 Maybe if Heath Ledger didn't die they would've gotten some more movies out before rushing for the ending because we all know they wanted more movies with him as the Joker. They could've done the other ones with Mr. Freeze looking into Cyrogenics to try and save his wife and Poison Ivy being some extreme enviromentalist though. That just leaves Penguin so how the hell would you fit him in a realistic batman?
@0:04 I just love how Alfred just looks at Bruce through the mirror. It’s like a father checking if his son is okay. And in this case he’s not. What a good man!
I always found it sad how Bruce implies "Merry christmas Alfred...." You can see how his thoughts are completely elsewhere. Michael Keaton is a genius actor. He played the role of unbreakable hero and both a sad, traumatised millionaire...
As the years go on, this film proves times and time again how it just might be the best comic movie ever. It feels right. Completely cinematic and yet doesn’t take itself so seriously we slip into another genre.
I remember seeing this in the packed movie theater when it came out, and when Catwoman appears at the very end, the guy sitting right in front of me literally jumped out of his seat, and yells out "Yeah!! Batman 3!!" throughout the entire theater. Then everyone started clapping and saying "Batman 3!! Batman 3!!!!". People talking and thinking that this Bruce and this Selena would finally get together in "Batman 3", but instead we got stuck with Kilmer as Batman, dumb Riddler and Two-Face, Robin, and Neon colored Gotham city!! 😡😤
Imagine if we got Burton to do the next 2 movies as well with that darker theme continuing (instead of the bullshit campy stuff we got with Joel's movies) and of course having Michael Keaton return as Batman. That would have been amazing.
Very melancholy ending until the very end when you see the signal and you know the man will be suiting up again and then see Catwoman and you know shit is still on. Fucking amazing ending
FreeKickerz_Portland I’m 100% gay and even I wouldn’t turn her down! Though I’d probably start gossiping with her and talk clothes and well that’ll be that lol 😂
Fun fact: the last shot when the camera goes up and you see Catwoman is the most expensive single shot in cinema till now . From a quarter to half a million $ , and back then in 1992! The reason? Studio wanted to make a catwoman sequel and they had only a weekend to do this in the last minutes before the film opens. So they spend a shit ton of money to rebuild the set, bring the people back and make it! Sadly that catwoman movie never happened! They are saying it’s Endgames funeral shot But, the actors were already paid for the film and it had no effects. Mostly a marketing scheme
This and Batman 89 are two of my favourite Batman movies… the Nolan ones are great.. but the joy was totally taken out to reflect realism… I prefer my Superhero films to have a certain degree of comic book charm…. And I argue that Burtons Batman films had the best musical scores amongst all the Batman films.
I don't know why but this scene makes me cry so much every time. I think it's mainly because Selina Kyle had to give away her cat. But still Bruce Wayne will take care of the cat. When you hear the cat meows. Also seeing the eyes - triggers sadness. Also mainly because in real life some cats are strays/homeless
Extraordinaria película y un gran final.Creo que todos coinciden en que es una de las mejores versiones de Batman y una de las mejores películas de Burton.
The nolan movies are decent but highly overrated. Batman Returns was pure magic. 20 plus years later & they still hold up. Gotham city looked great & was always dark. The music is FAR superior. The casting & acting was more iconic. First Nolan batman was alright but has aged a bit since 2005. Heath Ledger was the only thing that really stood out in DK. The batman films keep getting worse & a certain affleck isn't going to improve the role.
The ending is a sad bitter sweet holiday to end the Burton era of Batman. I watched it last year Christmas Eve night in 2020. I had to spend it alone in my appartment on a cold winters night. The mood was perfect given the world's situation in 2020. And this ending kinda left me emotional with a few tears. For one, being the last time we see Keatons role as Batman. Second, while the dark knight has saved Gotham once again, he lost not only some of the respect from the city he protects, but failed to help those he tried to stop and a women he showed affection for. Even though she's still alive, he dosnt know that. Third, he thought he might have seen Selina, but found her cat instead, alone and in the cold. He took the cat as a good cause and as a omen for Selina. My guess is Selina has fully embrace the Catwoman personality that she left the cat to Bruce as if to say she's still alive and to take care of the cat as if it were her. Batman Returns was a film ahead of its time as a deep psychological tale and the darkest of the Caped Crusader's filmography and suffered because it was made at the time Batman was still only marketed to children and Happy Meals. The world embraced Batman 89, but the world wasn't ready for Batman Returns and despite the more positive reception it gets now as a good Batman movie and now a dark Christmas classic, the world still isn't ready for Batman Returns.
This ending is so memorable.

The studio really needed another Burton/Keaton/Elfman flick (perhaps less indulgent on Burton’s end) to get the Billy Dee Williams Two-Face movie we deserved. Agreed! Truly an amazing ending to a great movie!
Danny Elfman’s score is completely, totally, and utterly breathtaking. Sounds exactly how Batman should sound.
Not many people realise, but this film is actually incredibly interesting thematically. While the 1989 movie was more about how Batman and the Joker are polar opposites of each other, this film represented how similar the three leads are to each other.

There was a different script from.the Batman Returns writers which she was supposed to be in but it didn't pan out. I remember reading it online back in the day.
Batman Returns is my favorite Christmas movie.
The last time we will ever see Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman…
Nathaniel Stamper yeah after that two assholes ruined the entire franchise
Immortalfire yeah but i dnt want him to play marvel villian
IIIJFRIII true on everything you just said however I don’t think burton wanted to do a third batman film because on some interviews he has said he felt soo much pressure from the studio & just to get the film done & stuff on batman returns that he just flat out said no to a third one
A lot of people disagree, but this is my favorite Batman film. I know it deviates from the comics, but I appreciated and enjoyed the different stylistic approach to the Batman mythos. It has such a dark, quirky vibe that's integral to the Batman character, which unfortunately the new Nolan films lacked.
***** Not to mention Elfman's iconic original Batman score!
The Dark Knight killed this
It's important to look at this film as a different interpretation of the character. This isn't the Batman from the comics, its its own beast. If you want comic book Batman check out the 89 film, or the Nolan films.
Josh Bloomer mine too
Josh Bloomer You're actually not alone. Not only is it my favorite Batman movie too, but also among my top ten favorite movies of all time.
RIP, Mr. Gough.
Michael Gough lived to 94 though, a very long and full life.
Sorry about Sooty, must've been a real good friend. Cats are the best.
Not just my favorite Batman movie, but my favorite Christmas movie too lol
right? this movie gets no love!
it's still my favorite bat man movie, even more than 2008 one :)
the mixture of camp and seriousness was so unique, thanks to Tim Burton...
but the three main characters did phenomenal acting
Michelle Pfeiffers cat women, Danny Devito's Penguin and Michael Keaton as batman - they all did superb jobs..
Die Hard is the Christmas movie
Well come what may.... Merry Christmas Cris.... Merry 2019 Christmas.
And so ends one of the most interesting and brilliant times in Batman's history
I think there is a symbolism behind the fact that cat woman's suit at the end seems not to be done from pieces sewed together but it is a new whole suit. Like after everything she has endure, she has reborn redeemed and stronger.
This ending alone, as well as the ending of the 1989 film, would explain why I think Burton's movies are better than the Nolan ones. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but the bittersweet ending of this movie just made it all the more memorable for me, and while the new films definitely had their great parts, I still would prefer these two films with Michael Keaton.
Right right. All these idiots who say fans of Burton's Batman can't let go of childhood memories just have bad taste.
Cheers!
As an adult now, this scene hits hard.
It does like crazy
Unpopular opinion - Batman Returns is a Christmas movie.
"Well, come what may. Merry Christmas Mr. Wayne."
"Merry Christmas Alfred. Good will toward men..........and women."
love how bruce picked up the cat and didnt leave her out in the cold.
Micheal was so much better at batman than anyone thought he'd be.
+aquitaineq Hope Affleck will be also like him or may surpass him because Keaton's still THE Batman in 2015
Those last seconds with that music and where Catwoman appears still give me chills 💯❤️
That final shot of Catwoman looking at the signal gets me every time.
Nolan trilogy was boring imo. Always gonna prefer the burton films
I personally prefer the Tim Burton Batman films because they are more comic book accurate in terms of character persona and characteristics where as Nolan's films tend to shy away from the original comic book characteristics. But either way the Nolan films were still great in they're own way.
Tim Burton and Michael Keaton not having returned for a third outing is one of the greatest fuckups in movie studio history period!
Danny Elfman, what a soundtrack!
Jay Ohlrogge 0:15 for me,is like the Same sound of Miau talks
parts of this VERY distinctly recall bernard herrmanns vertigo score- elfman is still the man though
Best Batman Movie Ever!
MarciCow Yeah....saw this in the theater when i was 6. It became my favorite movie ever at the time.
that certainly didnt bother me as a kid, it was probably the most rewatched movie in the series, though i must admit having a soft spot for batman forever (perfect popcorn-cinema, regardless of comic book discussions)
The last good Batman movie until Batman Begins (Batman Forever is okay).
yep
"Batman Forever" was ok, but it wasn't B&R
But it have Tommy Lee Jones and a god awful Jim Carrey. I to think...Jim Carrey was supposed to be perfect for the role...
+Jonrick Pablo i feel like the riddler is a hard character to build a movie around.
Jonrick Pablo actually Batman forever does have the bat nipples and batbutts... it is a horrible movie just like B&R
I couldn't agree more, Keaton was and always will be the true Batman
Yet the ending also gave the hint of hope with both the cat and she glimpse.
Let's pretend Batman forever and especially Batman & robin never existed
@@Karlebow571 no worries because they are now non-canon thanks to keaton coming back.
+gorrow1990 unless you count batman forever which had some tim burton elements but also some champy elements of the 60's batman.
I would've loved to have seen a Tim burton take on two face/riddler/bane/scarecrow etc. And Michael Keaton is the best batman by far.
A fair amount of the violence in the '89 film was implied or insinuated - Returns was a significant jump up in the violence quota.
gorrow1990 he did complete it this is the last batman fight in a way
gor9027 dark & triller = black tale
The ending of this movie’s dark depressing and enough to make anyone feel empty inside
Catwoman lives.
1:00. That music. F'n chills everytime
I love the music that kicks in at 1:17 as well. Sounds like something you would hear in a Christmas song.
4 words: Best. Christmas. Movie. Ever.
Dr. Review it's not a Christmas movie it's a hero movie with Christmas
@@alexiskiaratorrijos It’s literally a Christmas Batman movie
The cinematography & art direction in this film is awesome. It’s like watching a child’s fairytale.
Batman 1989 & Batman Returns have a very special place in my heart ♥ 🦇
the best catwoman in the all world. The greatest Michelle🐈🐈🐈😍😍😍meow!
Batman Forever had problems, but nowhere near as abhorrent as Batman and Robin.
I actually enjoyed Tommy Lee Jones' performance as Two Face. For what it was, he looked like he was genuinely enjoying it and having fun, compared to the stoic, reserved characters he's predominantly known for portraying.
@@RB01.10 Batman Forever was at least a fun movie and it did entertain me.
While I do like batman forever. However it would have been great to see Bruce and Selina team up again.
00:12 - Creepy shadow of Catwoman that disturbed me.
Aww looks like Selina left miss kitty behind so kind of Bruce to take her home that’s so sweet
And then we got batman forever...
***** Compared with B&R is WAY better.
lmaof ikr
+Are D Batman and Robin makes Batman Forever look better than it actually is.

BEST MOVIE OF BATMAN EVER!!!!
ikr
Tim Burton did a great job, picked the right characters from the comics, the right actors to play them and did a good job making it emotional and the batmany feeling all of us love. this is the batman we all love..
WOW! Now thats a Gotham City!
Nolan didn't even use any imagination for Gotham. Just used New York City or Chicago and called it "Gotham".
Daniel Medina
At least it is in a open world, the sets get old after seeing the same location again and again. Batman, Monarch Theater and Batman Returns, The Square.
Isn't it what Gotham is though? I mean, I get that it's to be more realistic and all, but at least, it would have been good to have both mixed together...it would have been real interesting.
Gotham’s building are inspired by New York City which explains why in the games and comics, some characters have a New York accent
Well Gotham is set in New Jersey
You are always Batman. The best casting of the bat ever
+Theomite "and certainly better in terms of script and acting" LOL, you have a very broad definition of the words 'better' and 'acting'.
That was catwomans cat
Matthew Robayo
Yeah, I watched this again recently and you're right, it IS her cat.
I always cry at the music at 0 :48 soo pretty
This scene had been stuck in my head. Its comforting how he takes in that black cat on a freezing cold winter night
Rest in Peace MIchael Gough, you sir played as Alfred well !
I do wish Bruce and Selina would have gotten together in the end. At least dark knight rises gave Bruce and Selina a happy ending, I always wonder how Selina might have returned in batman forever had Tim burton directed,
They would have worked together I'm sure. It would have been her and him and no robin
Dexter Dawson i hated the nolan films. i only liked the two burton ones. i agree with u 100%
It's all downhill from here until Batman Begins 13 years later. wish they could squeeze in a Keaton cameo for the next one.
@0:04 I just love how Alfred just looks at Bruce through the mirror. It’s like a father checking if his son is okay. And in this case he’s not. What a good man!
the best batman ending ever
i always cry with this ending, specially in christmas cause its the only time in the year when i see this movie
The ending is dark & gloomy...enough to make me feel empty inside
I like the new ones...but damn it, I love Burton's first 2...
Lord, the music in this film is phenomenal, but the piece that starts at 1:17 is just...there are no words!! 😍
Imagine if we got Burton to do the next 2 movies as well with that darker theme continuing (instead of the bullshit campy stuff we got with Joel's movies) and of course having Michael Keaton return as Batman. That would have been amazing.
This film's storyline deserves a true sequel, which it hasn't had.
One of the best Tim Burton's movies!...
This is like 1 of the best ending in any movie, when u expect Catwoman to be dead shes ALIVE!!!!...
Very melancholy ending until the very end when you see the signal and you know the man will be suiting up again and then see Catwoman and you know shit is still on. Fucking amazing ending
I like this movie, but what kinda of world has men who turn down Michelle Pfeiffer
I've Never Turn Down Michelle Pfeliffer Love Her
Men who have to stand on their own by listening to their psychiatrists.
FreeKickerz_Portland I’m 100% gay and even I wouldn’t turn her down! Though I’d probably start gossiping with her and talk clothes and well that’ll be that lol 😂
Goodbye Michael! Speaking for myself. 25 years later. Still miss him as Batman. This scene makes me sad.
This was the best Batman movie ever! And I love Keaton.. He has that craziness about him that makes him a good Batman.
I really really really wish, that Burton and Keaton would make more Batman movies.. I could see them making an Amazing Batman Beyond..

I always get goosebumps at the end when she shows up.
Wish they did a batman, superman, with micheal keitan, and Christopher Reeves, it'll be best super hero movie ever!
Bruce will take care of selina's cat he would let anything happen to it
Such a haunting yet beautiful score by Danny Elfman 👌
This; and the previous batman movie; are the ones I grew up watching and thank god for that especially with Danny elfmans soundtrack
I just love this movie
Every Christmas I watch this scene. It's my tradition.
Now this is how to end a Batman movie
