    I've been eyeing the MBP for quite some time now. I have one question though: Isn't mastering using headphones generally a bad idea? In my experience, headphones don't really tell the truth often, and things generally sound better on headphones than on speakers.

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  6 лет назад +4

      +Linus Brendel glad you asked Linus! And thanks for watching! Perhaps the most important thing on any set of headphones or speakers is to spend hours and hours listening to everything you possibly can on them to get intimately familiar with your own system. I have dedicated most of my listening time to learning these DT 1770 Pro headphones inside and out and while I do have some amazing monitors (you can see them in the background), I actually know how things will translate in the real world better on these headphones than anything else.

    • @boothbuster
      @boothbuster 3 года назад

      @@henrygentles1894 dude - all converters from 2008 onwards pretty much sound the same. They all use the same converter chips. So unless the clock source is that bad, they’re all the same, unless you’re doing scientific audio testing at 192kHz or higher. I could never tell the difference between my Hilo and my Focusrite. Why? Because they’re both neutral. The differences people hear are due to the way that some converters distort on the way in or add saturation via harmonics. But you can do that with a tape emulator outboard device before going back in. Many pro mix and mastering engineers use MOTU... why? Because the units just work. Nowadays, it’s more about getting the configuration you want in terms of inputs and outputs and any extra digital connectivity, and stable and low-latency drivers, vs. actual differences in converter quality. Look up the loop back tests that people have done. Even a built-in computer sound card will probably pass a null test after 10 or even 100 round trips of being recorded directly from the output to the input! Also, don’t forget, CD audio was always digital audio. So, how come they don’t all sound shoddily converted on disc (A/D), and how come even cheap CD players at home in the late 80s/90s could play them back just fine (D/A)?

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  5 лет назад +1

      The analog stage is gonna add some juicy harmonics that will fill in some of the stuff that the MP3 encoding stripped out, but you are correct: it is not ideal to be mastering from an MP3, but sometimes that’s all we have to work with and it’s more than adequate for a RUclips video like this one.
      The tracks in RUclips’s Royalty Free library are hit and miss. Some are self-mastered, some are not, and I’d venture to say that almost none of them are professionally mastered.
      But here’s the real test: if you skip to the end of this video and listen to the before/after, does one sound better than the other?

      Using the Pure2 for mastering the DBox sum sounds like a good plan. +Allen Aung hey man! Thanks for watching! I used a 1kHz sine wave at line level to calibrate the Pure2. I put the Pure2 in manual mode and used the screws in the back to get the levels I wanted. There’s many ways you can get there - DA low gain, AD high gain, or vice versa. I tried to shoot for medium/medium gain because the calibration screws are more precise in the middle than they are at their extremes. Does that all make sense?

    • @thagek2
      @thagek2 6 лет назад

      I am sorry, I tried to route the way you did on this video and I got MBP to get to the level that you suggest by turning the a set (Left and right) screw on the back of the unit, I guess analog input of the signal which are output of the pure2. But how do I route PT to see any level changed with the other set of left and right screw and I guess going out of the MBP as a return signal.

      @WillBorza  6 лет назад

      +Allen Aung oh! Got it. I’d open up your favorite and most accurate metering plugin - I used Brainworx bx_meter - on the return audio track. Start by twisting the AtoD screws all the way down so that they’re well below 0 coming back in, then slowly bring them back up until they both just barely hit zero (or you may chose for them to hit at -.1).

      Yeah I had to dig really deep for several days, but finally got it, Thanks to your routing examples for confirming it. The Aux channel was the trick. Configuring the Mac, then Pro Tools, then the Pure2 I/O with their confusing driver App, and throw in the UAD-2 was a mind bender, like opening a barrel of monkeys. For 30 years I’ve been simply routing AES thru dedicated interfaces, sooo easy. Configuring and Routing USB audio the total opposite, invisible & not documented anywhere.

    friend good morning look I saw your youtubr channel and I found the topic of mastering and mixing interesting through the different hardwares you use but I'm about to decide more for pure 2 since I would like to have a better mix but above all the great doubt this device does not work or do not work as a dangerous analog summing type? It is my doubt because if I already have the mixed tracks and tracks and I would like to give that depth, background silence, subtlety, definition and stereo image of the sounds in the mix and power it is necessary to complement it with a separate analog adder such as the dangerous one to route the tracks of that dangerous to pure 2 and from there connect it to the pc? Or is this machine capable of doing the summing process alone and does not need any other equipment? I would like to know the most basic setup that you recommend if I buy the pure2 that complements it in the Mastering chain to achieve the final sound I want from the tracks, I thank you soon

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  4 года назад

      Hi! The pure 2 is just 2 channels: left and right. For analog summing, you’ll need an additional summing box (like the dangerous, or neve 5059), but you’ll also need an audio interface that has more outputs than the Pure2 can offer you. Have a look at an Apogee Symphony maybe.

    Hey Will, I was hoping I could ask you a question! My studio has been coming along nicely over the last few years but I'm looking at a few upgrades this year including a new PC, and a proffessional interface/converters. My long term goal Is to have a studio I can track drums, a full band, and also mix and master. So I guess my question is can you give me some reccomendations for some interfaces, or converters/clocking, as my studio will be made up of outboard preamps and gear rather than a phisical console! Also Im not worried about needing a summing amp, my goal is to do my mixing/mastering in the box/Portico MBP. So basically I just need enough inputs and outputs to do drums and or drums and a live band so, up to at least 24 channels min to be safe! So ya, just hoping for some guidance and suggestions! Thanks brotha!

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  6 лет назад

      Nice man! Congrats on moving up in the Audio world! If you already have 24 preamps, I would recommend going with an Apogee Symphony with two 16x16 Analog I/O Cards (or one 16x16 and one 8x8). If you don't have 24 preamps yet, I would go for something like the Antelope Audio Goliath HD. If you're using something like a mackie board for it's preamps, I would also go for the Goliath because the preamps will be much better than what you have. You can always start with a Goliath and then buy preamps as you go as well. What do you think? Have you been eyeing anything in particular?

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 6 лет назад

      Hey Will, sorry I took so long getting back to you! So I checked out the Antelope and the Apogee
      Symphony I/O Mkii and out of both of those I would have to say the Apogee makes more sense to what I'm going for as I dont need to have any preamps on my interface, just the I/O, Conversion, and clocking! The big thing that still makes me contemplate is while the Apogee has what I need, and is flexible in terms of growing in I/O , It is only Thunderbolt While the Goliath has many more hookup and routing options. Also , will the Symphony I/O work on a Windows PC Setup? Thats my only worry! Also Is only having Thunderbolt going to be a good future proof investment? Okay, but before we jump to a conclusion, to answer your question here's what I've also been eyeing! 1)- RME Fireface UFX+ - It has Thunderbolt and Usb 2 and 3 compadability, and room for lots of I/O but not sure if the I/O routing is ideal, I guess its mainly MADI and Im still new to alot of that stuff and have alot to learn in terms of routing I/O stuff! So theres that, and its quite abit cheaper but not sure if the conversion and clocking is on the same par as Apogee and antelope! 2)- Maybe Antelope makes a similar thing as the Goliath in terms of Conversion/Clocking and can get me 24 channels of Ins/Outs but without the extra mic pres and some other stuff???The ORION 32+ Maybe???and lastly, lol, I was thinking since I dont need to have preamps in my rig , I saw a setup that TRUE SOUND STUDIOS on youtube is using, he has a video on it, it's just essentially two seperate SSL Alpha Link Converters, one is 16in/4out unit and one is 16out/4in , and you can link up to 4 units, or SSL makes a 24in/24 out unit aswell(thats what I would look at getting) and then he links the SSL with an Apogee Big Ben Clock, and an SSL MADI Extreme 64 Card, and hes basically running his console with it, but I would be running just racked preamps etc! I like the idea of this setup because I can grow it as my studio grown in I/O, and Im not paying for mic pres on the unit etc. But the cons in my opinion is that it wont be a very mobile rig, but Im not to worried about that. The other con is obviously money lol. It would be in the ballpark of an Apogee or Antelope though! The RME on the other hand will be the cheapest option, and gives me lots of I/O and TB and USB 3, which I like! So In end all of them would work , but what I would be worried about most is obviously sound quality/stability/reliabilty #1 and number two routing and compadability with my system, well actually obviously compadability is number one but you get my drift lol. So , thats where Im at , but when I think about it , I will still need time and help to decide. Bigest questions are , will the Apogee be compadable with a pC/Windows? Does Antelope make any other options for what I need , Orion 32+?? etc, Will the RME and SSL / Clock setup be on the same par as Antelope and Apogee? Thats all I can think of right now! Thanks Will, This part of things has by far been my biggest challenge of the process so any and all guidance and advice is so valuable and I will be in debt to you! If you are willing to work with me to design and plan my setup, I can pay you for your time !

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  6 лет назад

      Unfortunately, I believe Apogee is Mac OS only! So don’t go that direction if you’re building a Windows system... the Antelope Orion 32 HD might be your best bet. It’s USB 3 and has HDX compatibility if you decide to dive into Pro Tools HD someday. RME is ok. In shootouts, I think the general consensus was that the Orion beats out RME.

    • @underpressureman
      @underpressureman 6 лет назад

      Okay thanks alot Will. I still am going to consider the Goliath, there are actually 2 different models of the Goliath I think, but the Orion is looking like a good option aswell. Also I dont mean to keep bugging you but what do you think about getting seperate converters and Clocking as opposed to an interface? Do you think theres any pros/con's to getting converters and seperate clocking?

    • @WillBorza
      @WillBorza  6 лет назад

      If you have a lot of digital pieces in your studio, you absolutely need a master clock to keep them in sync with each other. Otherwise, a master clock won’t do you much good
