      The best sidechain, absolutely...but definitely not the best dynamic options. Kirchhoff gives away more dynamic control, which includes SEPERATE above and below threshold settings, plus SEPERATE toggle of detection area AND relative analysis zone, plus control of onset transient emphasis/de-emphasis, and controllable lookahead time

      @@nyniomusicnot the best. Less filter options, less dynamic range control, no selectable oversampling, and a still outdated gui...but the sidechain feature is absolutely head of class

    I only use digital EQs for notching and filters. For analog EQs which are what I’m really always using are, API, SSL, Neve and Pultec. I almost never ever use mid/side and rarely use dynamic EQ. Remember all the greatest mixes you grew up listening to didn’t even have these as an option and are only useful in extreme circumstances which rarely occur. But go to vocal EQ is still the trusty old Manny EQ.

    I recently got Sonible Smart EQ 4 and it's a game changer. It doesn't mix for you but it gets you way closer right off the bat and cuts time WAY down. It's a little like fabfilter but with extra features. I recently re mixed a song to see if I could beat the original mix with this plugin on every track. It beat my other mix hands down. Wasn't even close. I got there in just a couple of hours (which is unheard of for me, I'm a bit slow).

      what are some of the most helpful features that have helped you?

    • @dudemcgee256
      @dudemcgee256 8 месяцев назад

      @@prodsunss Mainly the ability to get rid of obvious problems right at the start. If you load it on all the tracks you want to affect, it will analyze your audio in context of the mix and make adjustments based on genre and instrument. You can adjust how much of this effect you would like or how little. For example, almost every single time you're going to want to boost some highs on a vocal, or remove some mid bass from a kick drum. It'll do these general moves so you can really focus on mixing. Then it has all the dynamic eq, compression, expansion, and regular eq you'd expect to find. You can also group instruments together and tell the plug in what the priority of the group is in the mix. It will eq groups as well as individual tracks. Super powerful. I'm still learning it but I love it so far.

  • @WheelieMix
    @WheelieMix 8 месяцев назад +2

    To be 100%, this is just my opinion and my conclusion after a lot of thorough testing and carefully matching :
    A lot of this is brain wankery.
    A lot of eq emu plugins are just curves. Or curves with a very minimal coloration. I encourage everybody to match curves with an analog phase eq plugin (Kirch, Crave, ProQ etc…) and blindtest.
    Most of the time, imho, the coloration “box tone” is negligible or slightly detrimental.
    But I get it, and I wasn’t trying to be snarky, it’s stimulating to use different eq for different tasks, it feels good, it validates us a bit. Which is the most important thing in the end.
    But to be 100% honest, if the eq emulated doesn’t have a STRONG saturation stage post eq, it’s mostly just the same (often slightly worse) than a classic analog phase digital eq.
    And surprisingly, this statement felt true even for a lot of hardware eqs.
    But don’t take me words for granted, compare/match/level match and hear for yourself :).
    I know this statement doesn’t ring right in an audio world where the narrative is all about buzz words (“gooey eq”…) and intent to sell products, but that’s what I think and encourage everybody to experiment with (with the most scientific approach possible, without bias).
    Cheers!

    I prefer to use hardware emulations. I rarely bother with notching until I get on the mix bus. In fact I like using hardware emulations because usually after I run something through tape, a channel strip and some other things it usually fixes whatever problems were there and it makes me turn less knobs.

    I take it that, there are band Eqs and Parametric Eqs.
    And both types can be found as either digital or analog.

    • @artysanmobile
      @artysanmobile 8 месяцев назад

      Actually, they are all digital obviously. Parametric simply add a control per band for width. Many EQs have a width control but call it something else. They don’t really break down into neat categories like they did in the hardware days. Ears are the ultimate judge.

  • @Ewoof
    @Ewoof 8 месяцев назад +1

    My take on digital and analog EQs comes from my other take on cutting and boosting. Cutting highlights the parts you like and boosting changes the tone of the sound. So because of that I cut with digital EQs and I boost with channel strips until I find a tone I like as it forces me to listen not with my eyes but with my ears. So yeah have the Sonible Smart EQ and the SSL 9000 channel strip in every track I have.

  • @M.Holland
    @M.Holland 8 месяцев назад

    Depending on the job to do, I use either a Digital EQ or a plugin emulation of a 1073, a SSL or a EQP. That’s plants of choose and you could do basically anything.

  • @samz9121
    @samz9121 8 месяцев назад +2

    Channel EQ / TDR Nova for transparency, along with a Brainworx SSL, API Vision strip, and Noiseash Neve 1073, and I'm good to go.
    For comps, I tried to minimise my options. I've shrunk it to a Distressor, 3A, 2500 and a dbx 160 emulation.
    That's easily the majority of my processing right there. It's still under 20 plugins and I'm trying to bring that number down just a little more.

  • @adampeters9684
    @adampeters9684 8 месяцев назад

    For analog EQs it’s just one of those things that takes a ton of times to develop some rules of thumb regarding safe bets. Best case is you have 2-3 top of mind for each job and among those a favorite that’s worked in the past. It can become overkill real quick, but I’d be lying if I said there weren’t at least 15-20 analog modeled EQs that I’m gonna use on any given mix

    To me transparent digital EQ's, are REALLY splittin' hairs these days. Many people are like. ''Yeah but stock EQ's sound like plastic, 3rd party transparent EQ's sound better''
    If a stock EQ sounds like plastic, then it's because your source, sounds plastic.
    Instead of spending at least a 100 dollars on Kirchoff EQ... etc... just to get that 5% better sound. I'd rather try to get that 5% better sound, at the recording stage.

    4:35 would you say the same thing about practice in general. When you’re trying a new technique or idea are you trying that in a completely different session to practice. And if you are using it in a different sessions what happens if you’ve already half way through a mix for a client but that track might be perfect for the new technique you tried in a different session.

  • @studiovinden

    This is so interesting, I feel like there are two main approaches to EQ, the one where you use a handful character EQ's per song that accentuate certain aspects of a track and the other, where you use a single flexible EQ to do the same job. I'm of the first variety myself, I love the speed it facilitates for me. But I'm sure the second approach is just as fast for other people. It would be very interesting to hear your take on how much of the character of an EQ is in the curve, I started thinking about this when I saw Eric Valentine's presentation of his new 500 EQ, comparing it to other EQ's with tubes and transformers. It really begs the question if the biggest difference is in the curve shape and how close a high quality digital EQ that can produce any curve will come to all our favourite charger EQ's (software and hardware) and how much of it is our biases? ❤

My favorites all turn out to have knobs and not many of them either. PuigTec emulations, SSL emulations, Sonnox Oxford EQ give me the sound I need. There are exceptions. The Waves H-EQ is a bitch to use. It is also pure magic. Ozone’s EQ module makes it 5 and I could easily work on every project with only those.
