    Thats interesting. I haven't heard about the people who complain about the "Loudness War" and ATMOS at the same time 😂. And thats probably because I don't at all keep up with ATMOS. I mean I get it for filmmaking but, personally, it makes no sense for music. Im NOT bashing it, you, or anyone who is into it. If you enjoy it and can profit from it, have at it brother. But I also don't fully get the issue with the Loudness Wars either. If you know how to mix to maintain headroom theres really not much of an issue, again, in my opinion. Excellent video bro!

    One of my favorite videos to date! Thanks for all the great information. I wanted to ask the community a question. No matter what I do, (I've tried tons of different mics and pre's over the years) my mixes seem to be too bright and digital. I do a lot of singer songwriter / acoustic gtr /piano vocal mixes and they almost always come out overly bright. Ive gotten to the point where I never add a high shelf to anything and they still come out bright. Should I be cutting the highs aggressively on acoustic guitars and lead vocals? FYI I am doing all my tracking and mixing with UAD. thanks for the help!

    The point you made about Atmos not having a mix buss to squash and get energy and attitude out of the mix buss.
    I’m finding the same problem with mordern rap music. I’m finding like you said, just gotta get more of that at the multitrack level!
    Great video colt!!

    Hey Colt, isn't the 500 series mastering EQ you're looking for simply a stereo pair of API 550Bs? Recallable, 4 bands, perfectly balanced, punchy.
    If 2dB steps are too much, the 5500 can do 1 DB and 0.5 dB steps, so...

    EQ & Comp: CS-5501 by TBProAudio
    Reverb: Rev305 by Fuse Audio Labs
    Side Note: I will say, that to get the majority of my results, I do use custom-made software and hardware. These recommendations are just for 100% commercial solutions that everyone has access to.
    Only a true audio software/ hardware nerd would understand.
    And I very much agree + more with the whole Atoms stuff. I'll do it of course because as engineers we all need to be well-versed of any standard the industry is asking for. However, this one has just never made sense to me.
    We have spent decades trying to get music consumers to get a halfway decent 2.0 speaker system. We have epically failed today as most people confide in their music experience with the exception of audio files with any stereo pair of headphones from Walmart gas station. On the upside of that, you're lucky if you have somebody who has Apple airpods.
    How in the hell are we jumping to 7 + channels, if we to never convinced the average consumer that a decent stereo system is worth it.
    I'm sorry, but it just doesn't make since to me.🙄🤦🏾‍♂️

    You were talking about mixbus compression in atoms not being possible. Maybe that will become doable with DAWs implementing Busses with more than stereo tracks. Busses with up to 15 tracks would do the job, right?

    Points on songs make sense if someone can't afford your services... but, it is a headache... as you say you have to chase money and there are not simple legal processes to go through if they do not play ball then it's costs you a lot of time and money and just not worth it

  • @compucorder64

    Similar, used to be Valhalla, but now it's Pro-R. Comp, if it was just one, idk, maybe FabFilter again, or maybe the Empirical Labs Arouser (yeah, snap, though I was thinking UAD about LA-2 more than 1176 but I do quieter/slower music). EQ, again probably FabFilter, with Sonible being a maybe. Or maybe the UAD Manley Massive Passive, just because would be great to have it for mastering - but honestly, I prefer the FabFilter UI. Because if I was just picking one of these, I think I'd pick something flexible, neutral, and surgical - and the FabFilter bundle would probably fit that bill for all 3. I agree about bass, something like a Nobles, REDDI or Ampeg PF-20T/50T, Neve or API will be better for most of your tone. But, I do actually like having the tube amp for that mid-range saturation, and the DI for the tops and bottoms. But, can be better to not mic the cab, and feed the tube amp to a Torpedo Captor or Ox Box, then do the cab/speaker/micing modelling in the DAW. Because then it's easier to tune & sculpt, and to mix the DI version with the amp version.

    The negotiating, the contract, the money, the family and the wife. Looks we have the same worries. I am seriously thinking about letting the wife do the numbers and just focus on the production side, whether is mixing or songwriting, producing. I have ADHD and that adds way more weight. My curse is that my wife has no freaking idea about how this world works and I actually think she should not... But getting someone to do management would be a great idea.

      Hi, I just want to say something to you about ADHD that I hope will help you: I’m 56 years old and I was diagnosed with ADHD just last year. When I was young I was a poor student, I barely finished high school and did not finish college, mostly because I could not concentrate. I lost I don’t know how many jobs for the same reason. But now I am now taking medication for ADHD and it has had a huge positive effect on my ability to focus and get my work done. If you have not looked into medication to help you with this problem, I highly recommend that you do. Good luck.

    • @GdpJapan
      @GdpJapan 2 месяца назад

      @@bridgestreetdesign Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it and can relate deeply. I’m glad you received your diagnosis - it truly is a game changer. I was officially diagnosed at 33, though I had a preliminary diagnosis around 12 or 13 when ADHD awareness was still emerging. At that time, I didn't take any medication. I moved to Japan at 19, and still live here. Unfortunately, adult ADHD wasn't officially recognized in Japan until 2014, so I couldn’t receive medication here until then.
      Everything you said resonates with me. I've been through similar experiences, including challenges like poor credit scores and maxed-out credit cards. Don’t worry, you don’t need to respond to that. There's no shame in college struggles. I graduated here in Japan partly because college can be easier than high school in Europe. In Japan, they monitor attendance closely, so there’s someone to push you and call you if you're absent.
      I often joke about my ADHD in social interactions, but it has had a significant impact on my life. Japan can be an extremely challenging place for people with ADHD. I take Concerta and Strattera, as other stimulant medications are forbidden here. Testing positive for amphetamines automatically leads to jail, and for non-citizens like me, it results in deportation for life. Vyvanse is currently only allowed for children because authorities can't imagine 12-year-olds snorting coke or doing meth during lunchtime.
      Concerta works for me, but it hinders my creativity. I take it when I need to get things done, but it can interfere with songwriting and basic emotions, like showing affection. You have my utmost respect and admiration. Recently, I've been very interested in exchanging experiences with other producers and people with ADHD. I wish you the best of luck. If you don’t mind, we can keep in touch. Sorry for the lengthy reply.

    • @bridgestreetdesign
      @bridgestreetdesign 2 месяца назад

      I am very glad to hear that you are being treated for your ADHA. Here in America Vyvanse is technically available for adults but it is considered a controlled substance by the US government because so many people are using it illegally for its main side effect, weight loss. There's actually a black market for it here. As a result, it can be difficult get at pharmacies - they are often sold out, and you can only refill your prescription a few days before you run out of pills. Yes, healthcare is very strange here.

    Why would atmos end loudness war? Streaming allows -14 to -0 lufs and few big artist are close to -14. A -18 atmos mix can still have 0 dynamics. The thing about "we only have 2 ears" is funny, but most people, do have maximum 2 speakers, and they are not often even in optimal positions
