    One thing I’ve learned from a lot of these RUclips Audio Engineers is that. Every so often they change gears and call it the best decision of their lives. I use to think you need the best gears to make great music.
    Just use what you have and learn your gears. Hardwares are great focus of your craft until you get where you want to be.

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  21 день назад +11

      Absolutely you should use whatever you have. But you should also invest in what the best options for you are. I’ve been running the exact same interface for 10 years now. It was time for a change.

    • @KevinGenus
      @KevinGenus 20 дней назад

      Quite frankly, I was going to down vote your comment, @jrcallahan506, but I am glad you said what you said because it highlights the importance of workflow.
      Regardless of the industry in which you work, you should always have ongoing processes that log data-points your company uses to calculate productivity. Colt is only talking about lost time due to sample rate configuration, but what happens when you need to farm out bass tracks? It would be great to know the mean time offset for track delivery from the people you work. If I say I'll have the tracks on your desk by 5:00pm EST and you have statistics, maybe you know I always deliver early so you can rely on the times I provide. Or maybe you know I am always one-to-two hours behind schedule which means you know between 6:00pm-7:00pm EST. You can plan around it and get things done, but if you need those tracks, you might opt to do a live session with Source-Connect. It may seem like a ridiculous example purely to highlight the fact that productivity enhancements can be multipliers, but we are consistently doing this in our heads all the time with the people we are working with.
      While I agree with your assertion that a lot of RUclipsrs drop to their knees with their arms held to the heavens shouting, "Oh Yes! This gear, this heavenly gear I just got [or more like 'was given for the purposes of this video and will keep'] is The Second, Third, and Fourth Coming!" it is not what @ColtCapperrune is espousing, and if you've watched his videos for six months, you know it's definitely not an issue of failing to know one's gear.

      @@ColtCapperrune I just upgraded to a new Mac Studio after years of running my recording sessions off a MacBook Pro, game changer. I only changes because I was forced to using Final Cut and Logic (slow AF). All the rendering is a small fraction of what it once was. I agree, every 10 years you need to upgrade.
      As for ProTools, I regularly record in logic, mix & master in logic. If I need the help of my favorite local engineer, I'll export clean stems to him because he works in ProTools. It's not that big of a deal. I work most efficiently in Logic, that's the most important data point. DAWs are interchangeable, productivity is not. For Hardware I use 2 Apollo x8ps, a Satellite and an arrow all chained together to track my band in a studio live setup. Yes absolutely UA had some stability issues over the past 5 years, but they've fixed the issues. The most important part of my rig is the OX box, and the Townsend Sphere (bought by UA) microphone for my guitars and vocals. With the new Mac Studio, the system screams.
      Cool video man, thanks for the breakdown.

    Hi Colt, Great video, very informative ! I also have been a faithful PT user since 04. Faithful user of Apollo, I started out with (2) 16 Silverface. I since have moved on to Avid Ultimate, (2)Apollo x16> Apollo x8p> Apollo 8 and satellite card. I have invested A LOT OF $$ into UA over the years . Early on delay compensation was no problem and did not have to think about it. Around 2019 ish, all that came to an end. I have received no help from UA or Avid. I , like you was forced to manually compensate . …. My question is: would you happen to know if Carbon can be used as a “Master” for my current set up? Other question , I currently have a Cranborne Carnaby HE2 on order. Waiting a few more months for Sweetwater to receive it. Do you know if I could switch over my order to your Sweetwater link? Thanks for all you do and your great honest content !!

    I have 2x Apollo 16 Quads, 2x Apollo 8 Quads all silverface with 4 large racks of outboard, all works pretty smoothly with Neve summing as well. My PT template has an analog bus and digital bus architecture being fed by the same sends so I can go full in the box with the mix or analog with summing with a single click. For each of my analog hardware inserts I have an equivalent plugin and use the plugin to capture the hardware settings for recall. For example my Bricasti is mapped to my Seventh Heaven plugin, my hardware H3000's and the Eventide H3000 plugin, Manley Massive Passive and the UAD MP, etc. It was a giant pain to setup and I end up with a lot of channel folders but the flexibility is pretty great.

    I started on protools 6 back in the day, but then.... I got more and more into film scores and sound design. Protools just didn't feel good in my newer work flow. Then a fellow engineer in Austin told me about Steinberg's Nuendo. Which was also geared toward live recording. Since 99% of my work flow is MIDI related, I looked at Cubase 8 Pro at that time. I thought I'd never switch from Protools. but, I did. I'm now in CB v.11.5 and haven't looked back. For my work flow and creative user in interface, Cubase Pro is it for me. But to each his own. Good luck with the new rig. I too hand off to mixing theaters, other musicians to lay in parts. That's why I use VST Connect pro and/or AAF transfers. No complaints yet because I don't have protools.

    touching on the monitoring subject - ive been using TC LEVEL PILOT for years now. its very clean, fully passive, and stands against other monitoring level controllers as a really transparent one. ive also managed to control 1 pair of monitors and 1 subwoofer through this same device via patchbay cloning technique, where the TCLP controls the volume of the Apollo (sent at 100%) and then goes into the patchbay to flow into the secondary device. Currently Im having a crossover for that task and no patchbay, but its certainly cool.

Once I started doing music production as well, I use ableton and it's intutive and amazing. However has latency issues and doesn't have the robust mixing features/latency features that pro tools has. Wondering how well midi works in pro tools? Or is it more of a live instrument recording type of DAW? Thank you for any input you have on this!!

    256 some musicians notice
    512 and above everyone notices

    Nice. I love HDX…have been doing that for many years now with different Apogee converters. They are my favorite, work with HDX. Currently using the Symphony MK II with a Sonett chasis for the HD card. The cool thing about the Symphony is that it is modular and you can make requests, so I have 32 analog I/O with that. Love Pro Tools too…agreed that it’s just one of those things. It’s a language you can’t unlearn, and you have to stick with it…even with all the headaches. I have worked with Carbon, the MTXR and older avid/digi converters. I think they all sound amazing and they would probably be my second choice. The only thing about the Carbon specifically is it sounds a little too pristine and digital or something to me, but the hyper detail is impressive. Apogee sounds like how the music is supposed to sound to me. Yeah for the card(s) chasis I think you’re gonna want to do the rack version. Just more ergonomic I think.

    I feel your pain. I used a TDM and then HD Accel system for years and experienced the same frustration with having a second piece of software to manage and manual calculation for hardware inserts with my Apollo 16 system, but the lack of plugins supporting the AVID cards at the time pushed me U.A. Now, the subscription price keeps me from going back. I know “being a professional reasoning” and all but it just pisses me off not having a choice. Good luck in Avid-land again and give us an honest review in the future whether it’s as good as you remembered it.

    Yep, recording overdubs into sessions with complex hardware and plugin setups will generally mean there’s lots of latency going on… what I do as a free solution is create a separate session for overdubs that contains a full mix bounce. The Con is it doesn’t have the flexibility of adjusting the mix on the fly within the overdub session, but the Pro is that it can now record at unnoticeably low latency since the session only contains one audio track.
    Then you can easily import tracks from the overdub sessions back into the Mix session, such as new vocal tracks, by using the Import Session Data feature. Import Session Data can be found under the file menu, import - or with the shortcut option+shift+I on a Mac, or alt+shift+I on Windows.

    Out of curiosity, isn't a plugin you could use to manage the input / output when using outboard gear ? Not saying you should use Logic, just as an example, there is the IO plugin that computes the round-trip time. Wondering if there is an alternative to that for other DAW's.

    Welcome back to HD. That chassis, I bought it in January to plug to a new Mac Studio M2 Ultra, HDX, I've been using the I/O since 2013. With an OMNI as well. I don't even remember how to calculate delay times for my hardware inserts, instant recalls, no matter what, the vocalist can just come an sing the session again if he or she wanted. The fans are of the devil. Specially the HD/IO, it starts gently but once you realize it's way too noisy, There are many ways to replace it for a quieter one. Careful with the chassis and updating the HDX card's firmware, many people has bricked them because it's just how it is and AVID won't take any responsibility. They came out with a plan that if you payed I think it was like 600 bucks a year per card, they would replace them in case they bricked them during a firmware update. In my case, when the chassis is plugged and I put the Mac Studio into sleep mode, and try wake the computer it forces a system restart. Let me know how does it work for you. My Omni needs to go away, and replace it for Matrix. Lots of cash. And definitely you want to get the I/O opened to clean the dust inside from time to time. That thing has never, ever failed on me for 10 years. I've left it on when leaving for a casual walk that suddenly turned into a 3 day work trip many times, came back, still working, The converters, pure magic. Top end gear. I thought I was on the wrong side of the road when watching your videos cos you used the Apollo the whole time, but somehow now I feel kinda better. lol
