This place has my heart... I have spent a major time of my childhood days in BDD chawl... I almost cried when you showed that terrace shot, it used to be my favorite hangout place. One thing I love the most about this place is the unity of the people. In every good or bad situation, ppl will be there for each other.

Jo log bol rahe hai “it’s so dirty”, I live in bdd chawls Worli in a telugu majority area(I’m a Telugu myself) and yaha logo ne 5 se 20 lakh tak ka interior karaya hai and almost every one is well settled and has at least one relative who works in a foreign country.
And also the price of one room is upto 70 lakhs in the chawl I live in & also not to mention each year we spend 15-20 lakhs for Ganeshutsav which is very famous in worli (donations are collected from only 2 chawls & other donators) so please stop judging✌🏻

People in Chawls are more community concious than those in flats. They are more social and helpful.. I too lived in Chawls during my childhood days in Dombivli. After moving to a flat it was like going from an open forest to a prison. Our Chawl was a mix if gujjus and south indians. Diwali was the best ever festival. All our homes were a constant buzz of women and kids. We went inside our homes only to sleep ! And making he clay "killa" (fort) was the biggest project to for all the kids. I had so much fun playing lagori and khokho ! Almost all the kids went to the same school. Nobody was rich but everyone was happy...very happy.

Dekhne ko toh aisa lag raha hai k kbi b gir skti hai.. waise b India mein old building ko khud girane ka trend nhi hai rainy season mein khud hi gir jati hai..
I know so many stories of how BDD chawl was a saviour for people who came with nothing and then later on made it big in this amazing city ... my dad was one of them and he is still proud about the fact he started there ...

One thing is sure this video is quiet informative. I lived in mumbai for about 8 years( From 1975 to 1983) but I have never been to BDD chawl. I heard many stories about this chawl. Before viewing this video I thought that BDD chawl is a single biggest chawl in mumbai. Like BDD chawl there is another place in Abhyudaya nagar, kalachowki named as Maharashtra Housing Board Colony where there are 35 to 40 builings. Each building consists 4 floors and each floor has eight 1 bhk flats. These building are also 70-80 years old, but still occupied. If possible share video of this place also. Anyway thanks for sharing BDD Chawl video.
U didn't check the ancient iron steps present in BDD chawl they are still there.They are amazing U can find them in Sewri BDD chawl

Thanks for refreshing the fond memories of BDD Chawl I was born in Sewri BDD Chawl No. 6 Room No. 55. I also used to sleep in our terrace (Gacchi). Very nostalgic. The life in our days was amazing the true enjoyment of all the festivals can be only experienced in a Chawl. Every day there used to be fights on petty things however if anybody needed any sort of help the whole chawl used to be present.

They were not jails earlier they were constructed to accommodate mill workers who had come from different parts of the country to settle in mumbai and Worli was one area with lots of factories so to solve the problem of accomodation these chawls were built. Gets your facts straight before making up stories bro but I don't blame you many people living in Worli think like you only. Peace out
I grew up in BDD chawl , then left before 5 years ...it was very difficult specially to study and live in 10 by 12 feet room for 4 family.members
But people of chawl.are very supportive and were ready anytime for your help

The government need to renew it, what I see is these buildings are well planned and properly aligned, all it need now renovation, then it will appear majestic and beautiful.

I worked for 2 years in Century Mill IT department until it closed in 2005. BDD Chawl is just next to Century Mill. My junior stayed in BDD Chawl. Had visited his house then an seen chawl. Miss those days between 2003 to 2005. Now I am in London.

Maharashtra Government must focus on Social Housing especially Public Rental Housing like Japan's DANCHI to create Residential facilities for Lower & Middle Income Groups.
A City needs all the Income Groups be it Higher, Middle or Lower ones and even EWS.
Maharashtra Government can adopt a Social Housing policy of constructing Apartments in Slum Areas & these type of Chawals asap.
In these Social Rental Housing Projects the Rent should be subsidised.
The Apartment scheme that can be adopted is:-
(1) Studio Apartment(1BK)
(2) 1BHK
(3) 2BHK
Studio Apartment must be available only to BPL Card Holders.
Since this is a Rental Housing system there can No Permanent Ownership.
These Social Housing Buildings should vary from 8 to 14-Floor.

No.. It was not for Jail .. Built for Mill workers, Dock works etc the same Mhada builds homes nowadays.. There are 7 open Maidans ....
So many buildings have road (GM Bhosale Marg) & small roads in between the Chawls.. Above all there are no Walls to say it was Jail ..
In 1920, the population of Mumbai was not much those who can do the “Jail Bharo” ..

Anshul Sharma, please do some research before making a video. BDD Chaal was never a prisoner. After the plague epidemic in the late eighteenth century. The Britishers want to organize Mumbai so they set up BIT( Bombay city improvement trust) after it was renamed to Bombay development department. BDD Chawl is the home for Lower Income Group LIG scheme.

In Mumbai and navi Mumbai....increased illegal extra space work and construction at Gallery,Windows,rooms and flats in buildings......So,skycrapper,society and buildings looks ugly and unsafe.....Do not internal extra space work and construction at Gallery in buildings......save architecture of buildings.....No rules for illegal work in Mumbai....Slums better than ugly and unsafe buildings in Mumbai....
