The Bombay Spinning and Weaving Company was the first cotton mill to be set up in Tardeo, Mumbai, in 1856. A boom in the textile industry followed, with 10 cotton mills set up in Mumbai by 1865, employing over 6,500 workers. A gradual increase led to a total of 136 mills being set up by 1900. The textile industry was offered added government incentives in the form of long-term leases (some of 999 years), as mills stimulated the economic growth and employment.
These mills were owned by former traders like the Tatas, Petits, Wadias, Currimbhoys, Thakerseys, Sassoons, Khataus, Goculdas, Cottons, and Greaves. Most of the mill workers came from areas around Mumbai - Kolis were particularly represented. The mill owners housed their workers in chawls built in the areas of Tardeo, Byculla, Mazgaon, Reay Road, Lalbaug, Parel, Naigaum, Sewri, Worli and Prabhadevi. These areas gradually came to be known collectively as Girangaon (literally "the village of mills")
The strike led by Dr. Datta Samant involved 247,189 Mumbai mill workers and brought the city to a standstill. The 1982-83 strike was the last industrial action by the Mumbai mill workers when the city witnessed an industry-wide strike bringing the workforce to the centre of politics.
Girangaon (literally "mill village") was a name of an area now part of central Mumbai, India, which at one time had almost 130 textile mills, with the majority being cotton mills. The mills of Girangaon contributed significantly to the prosperity and growth of Mumbai during the later nineteenth century and for the transformation of Mumbai into a major industrial metropolis.[1] Girangaon covered an area of 600 acres (2.4 km2), not including the workers' housing. The mill workers lived in a community, and they fostered a unique culture which shaped Mumbai at the turn of the twentieth century. This textile industry flourished until the early 2000s after which most of the mills were shut down, as the owners deemed them unprofitable and declared they were incapable of paying their workers' wages

These were prime areas, as time passed, real estate value increased multifold. Labourers were stabbed at their back by the nexus between politicians and real estate owners.
But technically speaking, at one point of time, relocation of textile industry from main city area was the need of the hour.
Relocation could have been done keeping the interest of the working class in mind.
But dirty politics ruined the worker's interest.

Dutta Samant. When world was introducing new textile machines, our industries were struggling with old Manchester discards. The unions just killed the industry throughout India. Factories were closed, labourers lost jobs, we lost grip on world textile products and union leaders died rich.
Later, owners and govt made money from previous land value.
Indian communists and unions know how to keep labourers poor and make money for the leaders
It continues. Eg. Kerala and Bengal. The infrastructure of both have crumbled, industries have flood, good labour is lost to other states while suckers bleed the state.

Those were days when nice things were available at reasonable rates and it was said, a common man can survive in this city of Mumbai. Rooms were available within reach by paying deposit and or PAGADI. Hence I could get my first single room on ₹40 rent plus pagadi of ₹4000 in the year November, 1968

During a conversation with my peers who had experienced a strike first hand, he told me that it took one year for every month of strike for the family to recover from the debt taken during the strike (6 months=6years). During that time many women from the affected families started working in beer bars and prostitution as the men could not find work for their skills and the children education and other requirements had to be met. Till date the strike has not been called off. To break the union of Datta Samant other unions were promoted and this is when Shiv Sena came into prominence and later came to power.
Check out what happened to Kohinoor mills who bought this property and when.
Where did the buyers get the fund's to buy the property.
Those who made money at the cost of the mill workers will sooner or later be visited by Karma 🙏

Nobody has heard of where Dr Samant's family is or who they are. Contrast that with how so called labour unions of political parties and their leaders have prospered. Similar to what happened in textiles but on a smaller scale was in the pharma industry- that started towards the fag end of the textile industry crisis. Many MNC and Indian pharma companies moved their plants outside primarily because of the high cost and tough price controls. The same political party leaders that are thought to have conspired to suppress genuine textile labour unions also had a role to play in this sector. Thanks to my father who was at the time in the managerial staff in one MNC, I know of one significant incident in which the city's most dominant party totally withdrew its strong opposition to the shifting of the pharma factory outside Mumbai after a meeting between the company's board with the party leaders. The so called union leaders of that party started coercing workers to sign the VRS and then later stripped the factory itself of minor machinery, electric fittings, seating, and uniforms etc, carting them off to their own houses or restaurants. Hundreds of workers ended up wasting prime years before they could find new employment.

Complete wrong information given in this video. Due to rising prices on land in Mumbai, the mill owners wanted to either shut down the mill or relocate, so they can sell the land for building towers. The workers opposed to this and also there were demands from workers for job safety and security. Most of the mill owners hence locked out the industry to counter the strikes.

You say that the mill owners sold the land at very high prices-- do you think the buyers were stupid to buy the land at prices more than fair value? So long as the transactions were at arms length and no coercion was applied, then the seller sold at the price the market would bear.
If the proceeds of the sale did not help the workers, that's on the contract or legal department. Anyway, sitting on industrial land without working industry for 15+ years is actually very hurtful-- that is called the carrying cost of capital. That capital could have been deployed elsewhere-- other workers could have had jobs, country's productivity and exports could have increased.
Labor unions, after a certain point, are a burden to the industry and work as leeches or cancer on a body-- eating away at the very thing they depend on. Labor unions damaged America's car industry too, especially in Detroit in 1980s and 1990s. So now cars are made in other states where unionization is not as powerful under the state laws. India needs similar labor reforms if it wants full scale industrialization and jobs for millions of Indian workers.

I'm from Mumbai, so I know. The reason the land prices are through the roof is because the zoning law (FSI) does not allow to build tall-- so more land is needed to house the same number of people. And since Bhagwan is not making new land, we are limited with the supply of it. More demand for limited supply will increase land value naturally. The gobermint has to loosen the FSI in order for the market forces to be able to build more to accommodate the demand. Look at the big picture, not which seth got rich selling land.

The collapse of the textile mill cannot be only attributed to the union led by late Dr Datta samant, every one had their own axe to grind,be it the Congress government ruling Maharashtra then, or the political parties, in fact the mill owners were using divide and rule policy , initially they encouraged Dr Samant, but abandoned him as he was growing popular, and becoming a nuisance to them. In this fight, the poor mill worker suffered, many families were uprooted, family members had to do menial works, sell off their properties to make both end meet. Many Children' s had to discontinue their studies, over all it was a nightmare for the mill workers'. As you stated rightly,in the end, the strike Was a win win situation for the mill owners as they got hefty amount due to sale of land, the government got revenue through stamp duties etc , the politician got money, and also got rid of a political leader who although due to the mill strike had lost few followers, but still till his death was popular due to his outstanding social work and setting disputes in various companies, and giving the workers a huge wage hike. In a nutshell, we can state that due to the textile strike, the entire scenario of Mumbai changed, it is entirely due to the failure of the mill strike, that we can see Multistoreyed building's where the mills stood and where people earned their bread and butter. Thanks a lot for highlighting the sufferings of the poor mill worker. Your videos used to be well studied and authentic, without any mistakes. Something has gone wrong this time. The hero of your story is Dr. Datta Samanth and not Sampanth. He was a physician by profession and hailed from Konkan / Ratnagiri area. He was very popular there and many of the mill workers were from his place. That was how he landed in Bombay. During that period, Mr. Dange was leading the workers and they were not happy. Struggles started. Doctor believed in muscle power. Many were beaten up and a few were brutally murdered. He also wanted to control other industries and taxi union. Leaders of Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena were supporting him and demanding their share in the loot. Doctor had become over ambitious and met his end from his political friends or should I call them foes.
Workers lost their lives (present & future), politicians stalled a possible rival.

Here everyone overlooks one fact that after 1971 defeat in war with India, Pakistan and its ISI was used by American agencies to hurt India's political, military and economic interests. These secret agencies used labour union-leaders and other figures of civil society likemedha patkar to organise, strikes and protest movements to prevent industrial and economic progress. Not only this kind of anti-development activities but also Punjab and Kashmir, terrorism, separatist moments, naxalite movement's, etc were sponsored and managed programmes of ISI and CIA. If govt then and industry owners had shown some sympathy toward workers we could have industrialised nation in 80s rather in 2022 ! They rely on migrators who came to make a living and don't get indulge in such unions.

I am really disappointed with this video. Workers should always have a living wage. And a leading cause for mill workers to join the strike was not having a living wage. A living wage is not something on which a worker is able to survive, but rather invest in himself(including family) to progress his lot in life.
Workers seeing that they were remaining where they were and the owners progressinv further and further economically from them were the main reasons of the grievances and the strike.
Poor wages and no ability(read opportunity) to progress, and what you get is a bussiness which cannot sustain.
