    I used to hang out with Mike 20 years ago from time to time with one of our hobbies. Lovely guy, I never used to watch the car shows because it wasn't my scene but he loved the motor trade and whilst our motor trade paths had been very different, it was always fun sharing some of the stories that inevitably arise. I'm glad he went from strength to strength, he's a grafter and wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. It always looks easy but I bet it wasn't at the time, stay well old friend.

    So, nearly 2 hours and we don't know the "real" reason. My understanding was that the TV producers wanted to change the format so that there was less footage of working on the cars (which is the whole point of Wheeler Dealers). This obviously didn't fit well with Ed, so he left the show.

      Thanks, that saved me nearly two hours of faff. When Mike started talking about himself, and presumably his siblings, having to go out and scrump food for the table, in the nineteen sixties, as if it was the nineteen thirty's, in a family that had their own car? ...please, I call bs, talk about embellishing a story 🤔🤣
      I loved the original WD, sad that it ended the way it did, but if you watch Ed's RUclips channel there's WAY too much technical stuff, boring as f. For me, they both levelled each other out perfectly, but like everything in life, all good things come to an end, and I'd now prefer to watch the new WD than Ed's channel, funny how things turn out 😆

      That is definitely the story that Edd put out, am concerned though that it's been 7 years and Edd dosnt seem to be sticking with anything watched his youtube show as I never realised Mike did so much behind the scenes thought he was just a presenter (I know should have read the credits but who does) so am wondering if it was more Edd was fed up with his job (all been there) quit and had to give his Mrs a valid reason why, or maybe discovery was thinking of cutting the fix section then changed there mind we will never know, not watched a new wd since Edd left for same reason I never watched TG after Clarkson left just not the same and happened when my kids was younger so no tv time anyway but never dreamed of sending Mike hate why would you? At the end of the day even if Mike was as bad as made out its not right to troll a guy for somthing so petty, Alix, Travarish and this interview are definitely helping dispel the myths about Mike, good luck to the man

      My family also had a car so that me and my sisters could get to school and my Dad could get to work. But we were so poor that at the weekend we would all go to the pub so that Dad and only Dad could have a pint for all his hard work in the week whilst we sat with him. This was in the early 2000s. You have to live through it to understand that poverty still exists...

    I've heard both sides of the story, and I believe the truth shall be found somewhere in the middle.
    That being said, I think the breakup was one of the best thing that could happen to both Mike and Edd. The show was called Wheeler Dealers for a reason, and even though the mechanical side was also important, it was never going to have first priority. And Edd really deserved a show of his own, where he could go into all the details of his repairs.
    I'm saddened about the fallout, and I wish Mike Brewer all the best. But I was always one of the many fans who strictly saw the show for the content Edd provided, and I stopped being a fan of the show after they changed the concept.
    Final word to all those who threatened or abused either Mike or Edd because of the breakup: may you all develop a terrible itch in your butt, and may your arms be too short to reach down and scratch it.

      Your last paragraph is hilarious! I have to admit I was the same, but given time, I've actually really enjoyed both Ant and Elvis's style. Ed is Ed and a great person, no doubt, but judging from his videos on RUclips, I get the impression he has less fire/more feet up/drink tea about him whilst Ant and Elvis are a lot more dynamic shall we say. Not saying one's better than the other and I think it's all turned out well for everybody in the end, but I do believe that in life, you shouldn't burn bridges, so for Ed not to have spoken to Mike in 7 years is a bit sour imho.

    • @tbjoyrider
      @tbjoyrider 9 месяцев назад +5

      @@Jez2008UK well thank you Sir. It was meant as a bit of a scold, with a bit of humour mixed in.
      I saw a couple of episodes with Ant as the mechanic, and I do believe that he's every bit as good as Edd was. It's the whole concept of toning down the technical side of the show, that I object to.
      I know that for Mike it's all about making the deals, and that's fine if you're interested in that. But for me it's all about the technical stuff, so it stands to reason that I'm on team Edd on this one.
      You're right, Edd's RUclips shows are a bit more laid back. But for a hobby mechanic like me, it's just the right concept. I have fun watching the talks and the cozy atmosphere, while also learning something new.
      Regarding not talking to each other for 7 years: that's often what happens when two very good friends have a major quarrel. Both Mike and Edd are proper Englishmen, and if there's something British people are good at, it's holding a grudge.

      @@invisiblekid99 I been in the trade for year's. Mike I know off though friend's and Edd I have meet in person a few time's. The problem only started with Edd after he finished with WD. He didn't like the way show was heading and did the right thing by him. The problem happened after that when the show ship back he's tolls. Not being we're they told him to pick them up from but a total different location across the country, but even not been well treated. Mike is a nice guy but he was a shady trader back in the day. Some of the car's sold on WD was faked or happened months later at a lower price then the show said. The show itself was better when it focused on the technical side than the selling side of it. Why should edd put out fire's? Why can't Mike call edd and apologies over he's tool's. Edd RUclips show is just a normal old style British mechanic/ engineer, who drinks lot's of tea talks a lot and takes he's time on everything. Good old English workmen like edd are great.

    Mike Brewer, because of his background, is obviously a very driven guy. Some people just want to compartmentalise their lives between work and leisure/home time. There is nothing wrong with either; but they don’t always make good bedmates. Wheeler Dealers remains a great show and genuinely, all of the co-presenters have brought something different to it. Long may it continue. You have to question though the mindset of people who are so spiteful towards people they don’t know in apparent support of someone else they don’t know

    Having watched a few interviews with Mike, I can see clearly that it was the internet who created the Edd China vs Mike Brewer situation. In the show, Mike played a role of a slightly arrogant car flipper, which people mistook for his real personality. I think that Edd was being himself and people may have assumed that he left the show for being bullied or not comfortable with his potrayal in the show, while he just wanted to do his thing. However, their different personalities was actually what I liked about the show : a strong sales man with priorities vs sensible, intelligent mechanic who can make miracles to help make make profit. Jekyll; and Hyde, Ying and Yang. It's very obvious that Mike is completely different in real life. If he played himself in the show, it would be extremely boring ... Interesting case. I have to admit , I was fooled by the internet to start with, but now I can see the other side. Don't judge the book by its cover has never been more relevant.

    What a great interview. Many points come out of it. Just to put a few people straight, I always loved Edd China and tolerated Mike Brewer, just the way I am and have always had an aversion for slick talkers like MB. But before anybody says how great Edd is and makes any reference to his YT channel with nearly a million subscribers, they should have subscribed to Edd China's Workshop Diaries from the beginning like me, and seen what an absolute joke it now is. There has been no new content for a year now, what content there is is average at best, and he has been keeping the channel going for the last year by screening old episodes of Wheeler Dealers. which supposedly he hates. Like or loathe MB, at least he sees things through and carries the show on. There are some amazingly humble superstars out there, like Tom Hanks for instance, but like MB says about 6 times in this interview, he is just a guy who fixes up cars on TV, so maybe he could have just a bit less of an opinion of himself than he has. However, he does not deserve trolling to the extent that is happening. It's all down to personal preference in the end, I can't abide Jonathan Ross, but he still gets top billing.

    1:09:00 or so. I would just like to say this about the Edd Ciyna 'debacle' the internet has created - and I've realized this 7 years ago! - Wheeler Dealers is Mike Brewer's show about Mike Brewer doing what Mike Brewer DOES. He's a wheeler dealer NO DOUBT. Edd did GREAT work in the garage with Mike's cars (or however it was done who owned them, probably Mike) and what I realized watching those years of the show, the first years, was that Mike was the hustler, the shaker and mover - as he is - and Edd is the mechanic, AS HE IS. Edd NEEDED to move on from that scene, he HAD TO. Edd is an amazing fabricator - look at all the cars he did for Guinness Book of Records and all the silly cars he created - That's Edd's way of doing the thing, and he's got over a million subscribers on his channel I'm pretty sure... but I never thought they had a falling out or a blow up, none of that.. and I also know from watching Edd's show on YT that he's had some stuff in his life that he's had to deal with, and sometimes there can't be a camera on you when you're dealing with life. So be it! I'm SO happy you did this interview. I love it, it's so great to hear Mike's story.. I love the way you interview, you're a great podcaster and you're GOING to make it here.. I know it. You do good work, you have a great attitude and a fantastic inquisitive personality, and you are, one day, going to have a studio, not a van : )

    As an Aussie I've always enjoyed Mikes work :-) from Wheeler dealer early days to the Ant Anstead Era and I really should watch the Elvis era as well, Australia being right hand drive shares a lot of the UK's cars and I especially love old Jags and Land/Range Rovers but the lineup and content along with Mike, Ed and Ant's presentation just struck a chord with me.
    This podcast though set in stone what id always felt to be true about Mike being a great bloke with a love of cars he shares with the world and I can not think negatively of him despite the haters. Yup I hit the clickbait and soon realised I was being conned and bullshitted to which only further reinforced my love of the bloke and the journey he takes us on in every episode.

    I've had the pleasure of meeting Mike, I've had the pleasure of meeting Edd... Two of the nicest guys in general, would I love to see Edd back on the show? Of course, I was there for series one episode one... But times change and people change, and what I would love more than anything is to see them back together one more time if only to dispel the hate once and for all, come on Edd... Pick up the phone mate, 7 years is too long... Make 2024 the year you both get to be mates again properly

      "7 years is too long" Absolutely!
      I've seen a couple of interviews with Mike where he's tried to reach out to Edd and is genuinely gutted that his old mate won't even talk to him. For all the flack Mike 'old out yer 'and Brewer took when they went their separate ways, the longer it goes on, the more it just makes Edd seem quite bitter, petty and a bit of a dummy spitter. Even if he won't talk to Mike directly, would it kill him to put something out on his own channel to say that the past is the past, no hard feelings are felt and to wish Mike the best for the future?
      Of course, there are always two sides to every story and I guarantee we've not heard all the facts from either of them, but it does seem that any grudge which is still being held is only coming from one side. None of us are here forever and one day, it will be too late to make amends.

      Edd put a video out straight after the split asking people to stop the abuse, saying the end was the end and no hard feelings and wishing the show the best of luck. He's moved on. There is a video of Mike not long after putting all the blame on Edd making out he thought he was too good to get his hands dirty when the show moved to LA.
      But it's just a TV show after all, I think Edd burnt a few bridges when he left, not just with Mike. No other major production company has picked him up bar the odd cameo on Car S O.S.

    Now this was an interesting interview. I've been watching Mike Brewer since his early days working with Richard Sutton, who you never see on TV now, which is a great shame. His review of the TVR 3000 was the best review I've ever seen: "Reassuringly toxic". Wheeler Dealers with Brewer & China was the perfect iteration of the show. The original and the one people fell in love with. I was always Team Edd as I found what he did far more interesting than Mike buying and selling but it's like when your favourite band split. When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd. Cornwell The Stranglers and Weller The Jam, people take sides as their ideal of perfection has been ripped apart. I've heard Mike say stuff about Edd in this interview I hadn't heard before and unless they ever get into a room and thrash it out, who knows where the truth really lies. One aspect I would take issue with is that you too can have a massive house, with a massive garden and car collection if you just get off your fat arse and work. That's bollocks. The world is full of people who work bloody hard, who work multiple jobs who never reach financial success or security, well they do for their boss. Hard work does not guarantee anything. The very nature of capitalism is there are winners and losers. Not everyone has the ability to be an entrepreneur. Not everyone gets the breaks.

    • @twatmunro

      I was Team Edd before the split as well. Mike used to get up my noise. Edd seemed more cerebral, Mike, the wide-boy chancer who'd have you off in a shot. After the break-up though, Mike maintained a dignified silence, Edd whined and complained like a stuck pig. I remember thinking at the time, 'we'll never see this guy on TV again. Seven years on, I much prefer Mike to Edd. He's an honest bloke of working class origins. Edd is a stuck-up ponce who came to think the show was all about him. His RUclips channel is dull as ditchwater -- though he'll always have a fan base of car geeks who like to fap to that long floppy quiff, he's lost my eyeballs.

    Part of the reason why the controversy endures, surely, is interviews like this where Mike is opaque, gives no details other than to accuse Ed of "using him" in pretty non-specific terms (oh and have a quick dig at whatever Ed is doing now while pretending he's not having a dig). Meanwhile Mike doesn't for even a picosecond acknowledge that he had any part to play in whatever went wrong. If we go on this interview, none of it had anything to do with him and he is 100% blameless. That's possible, but seems pretty implausible. So he'd either be better off just making it a no-go area for interviews or providing a more detailed account and not laying on the whole faux innocent, "who me, Mr Nice Guy?" thing so thick. It's not terribly convincing, not least beacuse geninely nice people don't humble brag.

    • @invisiblekid99
      @invisiblekid99 9 месяцев назад

      AFAIK, Mike didn't have much to to with it. Discovery wanted more US work and possibly more 'TV shenanigans' and Ed didn't want to. The whole using thing? Yeah not a great comment, but Ed knew he was the more loved one of the two and I do think he thought he could take those fans with him. People love a fight and especially after a split when one makes more money than the other and the other 'stick to grass roots'. At the end of the day, neither has produced answers that I found genuine or even with much detail. BOTH of them not clearing the air has added to this hype and love/hate.

      @@invisiblekid99 I have no idea what happened, nor a dog in the fight. But Brewer comes across pretty badly here to anyone who isn't biased in his favour and if this video is anything to go by, I'm not surprised that he has taken some online flack. He doesn't come across as open and honest. He does comes across as someone making digs while pretending to be Mr Nice Guy, which is never a good look.

    • @flat6croc
      @flat6croc 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@invisiblekid99 The fundamental problem here, regardless of what happened in the past, is that in this video Brewer is positioning himself as Mr Blameless Nice Guy while also making multiple digs China. He accuses China of "using" him and then maligns whatever output it is that China has since produced. It's all flatly contradictory and actually pretty unpleasant, especially the way Brewer says he "loves Ed" etc in one breath and then casts aspersions in the next. One would have far more respect for Brewer if he flatly said like "Ed's a shit for x and y reason". But moreover, if Brewer was as nice as he is claiming to be, he wouldn't be trash talking China while pretending to be his friend and having no axe to grind. On which basis, I tend not to take anything he says at face value as he is clearly capable of being wilfully misleading and disingenuous.
