    I followed your advice this winter of leaves on the garden beds.. When I planted my potatoes this year in a section of the garden, I had earthworms under the leaves. First time EVER in the 10 years I've had a garden there, that I've had earthworms! My soil is so much looser after just one year of the leaves, and I have beneficial earthworms. I've only turned the soil once so far, and by next year may not have to turn it at all. Thanks for this channel!

    Thank you so much for the encouragement. I have only found your videos recently and they are heartening. It is deep winter here in New Zealand--Or as I like to call it, Down Under Down Under. I grew up in northern California but moved to NZ in 2001. Since my husband passed in 2006 my veggie gardens are my life--Right behind my fur baby Princess, of course! I wonder what you could do here where there is little more than light frosts through the winter? My current plans for upgrading include a new greenhouse beside the house and a large grow tunnel on the front lawn. Again thank you, we all appreciate that you share your vast knowledge.

      I'm glad you're having good results with the leaves, Mike! As a rule, we try not to leave tomatoes outside when it might get colder than 50 under cover. We'll probably move ours out in a week or so. Your tomatoes will probably be fine, but I'd keep the rest inside until after the last frost.

    So Claytonia - I don’t like eating the stems but it seems to take forever some time to do stem them and harvest them one little top at a time, do you eat the stems? Tricks of the trade?
    This might seem ridiculous, but while I love gardening, I hate all the washing in the prep for the produce I grow! I’d sure love any tips you have on that!
    Love the music.
    And makes you wonder… What could anybody really dislike about this video so much to actually give it a thumbs down!?!

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, we eat the stems too. The easiest way I've found to wash greens is to put them in a big bucket of water, shake them vigorously, and remove them a handful at a time after shaking. For this harvest, I rinsed the greens outside in a 5 gallon bucket before bringing them in the house, and poured the water on the garden. Shaking vigorously and removing them from the water, as opposed to straining, is the key.

    QUESTIONS: 1-Remind me how many degrees of protection each layer of plastic gives you during the Fall / Winter / Spring. I know you mentioned it but can’t find it. 2-Have you modified your hinged double covered design from the original?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад +1

      I use Eliot Coleman's guideline that each layer of cover effectively moves the garden 1 1/2 zones to the south. So, with 2 layers in zone 5, we have a microclimate that is similar to zone 8. The only modification I made to the hinged low tunnel was to slip metal conduit over the center purlin.

    Patrick you might want to try the tartar bread plant. It is a perennial related to sea kale and has a slightly mustard green flavor.

    Hi Patrick. Looks good. Here in Denmark we got snow and cold weather 4. May. Onions and potatoes grow well. Everything else doesn't grow at all. Sad to look at ... Nice to see you have luck with your .. Greetings Finn, Denmark :)

    Just came to check the comments to see how you're doing, glad see you're ok, can't wait for new videos.
    I love the channel, you so informative on so many levels, from succession, to when to plant and how to get a head start. Also I think I'm going to start saving my Aldi cottage cheese containers also for my tomatoes lol.
    I'd love to know how much time it takes to "forage" all the components for compost and mulch.

      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Michael! Oscar and I will be back on Saturday with a new video. We spend very little time gathering compost and mulch materials. We make a couple trips to the wood chip pile every year, and collect bagged leaves and grass clippings from some neighbors. We use to make a weekly trip to Starbucks but don't do that anymore. Save up those Aldi cottage cheese containers!

    the contrast from inside your greenhouse at the beginning, compared to when you step outside... pretty remarkable. i didn't notice any garlic sticking up anywhere? Last year i had pests all over my garlic. I just let them go. still got a beautiful harvest. lost most of the scapes though. i was not going to plant more garlic, fearing even more of those pests. but the garlic is looking stronger than ever this year. being lazy has its advantages.

    I love your content so much! I planted my spinach/carrots and kale this past week (zone 4a) now we just had 20cm of snow. I hope my seeds will survive,but who knows. I didn’t see any germination during the 5 or so days of 12-20c days...so maybe there’s hope! I love watching your garden grow and appreciate the knowledge u share,it really helps me as a new gardener who suffers from a lack of both knowledge and confidence. 🙃 I do have enthusiasm though!

      those 3 crops survive nasty winters for me, no problem. they are tough and seeds are designed to "survive". so don't worry too much. still doesn't hurt to sow more than you think you will need. can always harvest extra sprouts but you cant rewind time and plant more seeds last week... when i started out i was so cheap with seeds, till i have so many packets from years ago. better to use it up, right?? $2 for a pack of seeds, lettuce all summer... or $2 for a bit of lettuce at the store... 1 salad...

    Are you reusing grow bags from last year ? Do you plant anything in the bed with perennial cold hardy greens during summer ? I have a bed where I want to do that but don't want to dedicate it only for greens for the whole season due to lack of space. Also I would love to see your Asparagus harvests. As usual a great video. It is so refreshing to see harvests coming in so early.

      Yes, the grow bags are in their 4th year and they're still good as new. These are the bags we use: amzn.to/2GXdIAp So far, we've planted pole beans and pumpkins in the hoop house.

    Hi, I was going over some of your old videos and came across the episode about using spent beer grains. I was wondering 5 years later are you still doing this? And have you learned anything new about the process that you can share in a new video. I have found a local source myself and would like to use it in my compost/worm bins all year long.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      I don't collect spent grains any more because we don't need to make as much compost now that our garden is well established. But they're excellent. Only 2 caveats: 1) rodents like them a lot, so make sure to bury them deeply in the compost pile; 2) they can get very hot when breaking down, so make sure to not put them into a worm bin until they've aged a while and are no longer hot.

    Have you had a year in which you didn't have to purchase plants or amendments due to your efforts from the previous year?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      Yes, we start all of our plants from seeds, make all of our own compost, and don't use any store bought fertilizers. Sometimes we have to buy amendments for our grow bags, but never for the garden beds.

    I'm about to plant tomatoes for the first time soon. Do you ever get mildew or other diseases on them? What should I know to prevent that except cutting bottom leaves close to the soil?

    • @OneYardRevolution

      I don't do anything other than remove diseased leaves and keep the soil covered with organic matter.

    Hi, Patrick. At discount grocery stores here in Toronto, they put enormous boxes next to sweet corn displays. Customers husk their corn, and I bet you could fill a half dozen garbage bags with corn husks. Would you ever consider using them as a free, local green compost ingredient? Your biggest fan
