Good to see the cool cat getting in on things. True friend
This is my first year growing Tatsoi, and we got -15c last week. I thought the whole garden was a goner, but they all bounced back! I've been growing for 15 years and have always been intimidated by fall and winter gardening, now I'm just kicking myself that I haven't put more effort into it earlier.
I'm happy to hear you've made the leap to a fall/winter garden and it's going so well!
Another great video! Our very first garden in the hinged double tunnel is doing fantastic and we are enjoying fresh greens for the first time during the winter. Thanks for your great advice!
Thanks Serena! I'm glad the low tunnel is working out.
With all the recalls at the supermarkets this fall I will be making my own winter hoop house to make sure we have continuous fresh greens. Thank you
My pleasure Valerie!
Thats really great for the winter time... Im blessed to live in a tropical climate.. planting all year round.
I'm so glad to see another video! I am jealous of all the greens you have growing in December though! Lol I need a hoop house!😎
Thanks Pamela! I think you'd enjoy having a hoop house. It's so nice to still have crops to harvest in the cold months.
Thankyou Patrick. watching your video always bring me peace and ease, please keep the good work
Here in the UK our winter growing season is limited so like you we've been growing vegetables under cover - salads are great! Thanks Patrick always find your videos informative.
I'm happy to hear you're growing in the winter in the UK!
Lots of really useful information, I can't believe how much you're still getting in December!
Thanks!
Hi Patrick! I love your harvest videos with recipes. Having ideas for how to prepare/preserve the garden encourage people to grow their own food. As usual, your garden is amazing. I do miss your videos because you don’t upload as much as usual but I enjoy it every time you do upload. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Anh! I hope to be back to my weekly videos now. Thank you so much for watching.
Yep, purple sweet potato pie made it to our table this year as well. Delicious. As usual your winter garden is very productive.
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying purple sweet potatoes too.
We did like the music. My son especially enjoined it. Hope you keep up the garden videos too! You’re my favorite!
Thanks! Yes, I'm continuing with garden videos.
It amazes me how well your cold house works mate. Incredible. That sweet potato pie looked awfully good as well.
Thanks Andy!
Amazing harvest Patrick&Oscar! If You guys can do it in zone 5, I have no excuses in mediterranean zone 8 climate here in coastal Croatia. Wish everyone a bountiful new growing year and happy holidays! Cheers!
Thanks! Happy Holidays!
Patrick!Purple sweet potato pie I ordered 6 plants from them in order to do the same thing next holiday season!
You're going to love the sweet potatoes and pie, Hope!
Really enjoying your videos! I started late with my first greenhouse but you're motivating me to get out there to be prepared for the coming months. You do great job explaining and are very thorough. You have a very calming voice. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Thanks Dave! You can definitely get an early start on the spring garden late this winter. We start planting seed and transplanting in February!
Awesome video and digging the tunes Patrick!
Thanks Nick! That means a lot coming from a talented guitarist like yourself.
My Zone 5 hero! Learn something new each video. Thank you!👩🏻🌾
My pleasure!
I appreciate your thorough and informative videos. We aren't growing anything this winter so I'll live vicariously thru your videos. - Amanda
Enjoyed seeing the fruits of your labor combined at the end to make a nice salad and pie. I will have to try the Parmesan chips and purple sweet potatoes. I have made a regular sweet potato pie many years ago.
Thanks!
Hi Patrick, love your garden and ethos. I’ve found another local free resource that I haven’t seen on your videos or anyone else’s, though I could be wrong. Mole Hill soil. It’s fantastic. It’s nice and soft, no seeds in it and comes from well underground where all the nutrients are. I’ve made some more beds this year so it’s going on as my top soil and I’m thinking of mixing it with compost for seeds. I’ll let you know🦔. Jimmy Scarborough UK 🌊
Please let me know how it goes, Jimmy!
What a great salad haul! Thanks for sharing. I will be trying the sweet potatoe recipie soon.
Thanks Denise! I hope you enjoy the pie.
Your cold-weather garden is so inspiring. Thanks, as usual, for giving so much detail about the specific plants you've had luck with. And of course then recipes! Can't wait to see more winter videos :)
Thanks Terry!
I put my cold frame in a very sunny Summer spot that shaded basically all day in the winter. Not particularly helpful haha but we close on a house soon with 90% of the yard is south and west facing wirh no fences or obstructing buildings! Im so excited!
I did the same thing the first time I set up low tunnels. Your future garden sounds like it'll be perfect.
Please come back 🤗❤️ I’m in the Chicago suburbs and love this channel!
Great video. Loved the guitar work...especially the dobro
Thanks! Paul's dobro playing really gets the track hopping.
I was going to ask about the music as I really enjoyed it. And Oscar seemed to enjoy the nice cosy hoop house.
Thanks Helle!
Diggin the music!! Thanks for the yummy recipes.
Thanks!
Great harvest
Delighted I found your channel. Looking forward to learning from your experience. Thanks! We just moved into/ bought a new place in May 2018 with a small yard and this year is garden planning.
Hoop houses are da bomb. I can grow almost 365 days a year here in Central Commiefornia. Definitely not looking forward to the 'learning curve' when I relocate to N/W Arizona.
Very impressive harvest! I was wondering, I have never seen a video from you on how to organize seeds. I've watched many RUclips videos and have a few ideas, but with the amount of seeds you use, you must have some way of keeping them all organized so you can find them when you need them. Now that you have a little free time this winter, I would love to see a video on seed organization
Thanks Cindy! I keep them in small sealed plastic baggies in sealed jars in a dark dry location. I have separate jars for tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, etc. I hope this helps!
My new favs are Tokyo Bekana and tatsoi. Lasts really well in the cold and tastes good.
Great job, Patrick. Thank you for sharing and Merry Christmas, Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to you and your family.
Thanks Daniel! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening thank you!!!
For anyone who doesn't find Tatsoi seeds in the local garden center, I think I spotted it in IKEA today, it's in pink paper bags along with two other kinds of greens.
Did not know you could do that with parm. cheese! I just bought some fresh from the cheese section of a new store in our area called Market 32. I will give that a try. Parchment paper on a 375 degree oven. Wow!
I hope you like it Barbara!
you never cease to amaze me Pat!
Thanks Jeremy!
One Garage Revolution!
Great Video as usual. I got cabbage, kale still growing and Brussels sprouts. I think they won't last once harsher weather sets in the UK. I am a novice gardener.
Thanks Raj! I would think that kale and Brussels sprouts, and maybe cabbage, should survive winter in the UK. How cold does it get where you live?
@@OneYardRevolution 0 Celsius to - 3 Celsius. Thanks
They should have no trouble with those temperatures.
Hey OYR .. love your December harvest .. I Harvested Purple Kale 🥬 Myself yesterday.. Great Channel
Thanks Dan! I'm happy to hear you're harvesting in December too.
Love to have the same setup as yours , salad looks very yummy 🤤
Thanks Jen!
Great video as always, and as a supporter to your great taste in everything, I subscribed and very much enjoyed your music channel.
Thanks Giovanni!
Merry Christmas to you and family,
Merry Christmas, Rose!
Beautiful Patrick! Your carrots look delish!
Thanks Amanda!
Sweet potato pie! There's some Alabama in your soul, I think. :)
It's funny that you mentioned Alabama, Trav. The first piece of sweet potato pie I ever had was made by my mother-in-law, who was from Alabama.
@@OneYardRevolution, great! I'm born and bred in Alabama, but "War Eagle" and not "Roll Tide." Come see us if ever you are near. We live in Madison, Alabama - a suburb of Huntsville in the northern part of the state. And how much for a couple of purple seed potatoes and three sunchoke tubers. Having trouble finding them.
Hey Patrick! Your videos are great and Oscar is the sweetest little devil! I was wondering if you are planning to make a video how to start a worm bin?
Hi Diliana! This video describes my basic approach to vermicomposting: ruclips.net/video/SKKKEaR3mwk/видео.html I hope it helps!
With the amount of sunshine the heat and the crops in the hoop house, it's hard to believe it's mid December...
Hi Stephen! Yeah, it felt like early summer in there when I shot this video.
Good stuff
My first viewing... loved it!
Thanks for your inspiration. I have 2 cold frames going in Mn now.
That's great!
Thanks for sharing...
I'm so glad that I "recently" found your channel...
Welcome to the channel!
Wonderful harvest, Patrick! The carrots must be deliciously sweet! I'm writing down the lettuce varieties because I want to do a little winter lettuce trial in the greenhouse next year. This year I'm growing 'Kweik' (which did very well last year), 'Vailan' and 'Rouge d'hiver'. I also moved some self-sown 'Claremont' into the greenhouse and am curious how it will fare since it's not really recommended for winter growing.
Thanks Vera! Yes, the carrots are nice and sweet at this time of year. Thanks for sharing the lettuce varieties you're growing. We're growing a number of red lettuces too, including Red Romaine and Rouge d'hiver. They didn't do as well for us last winter, but part of the reason was that they were close to the door and it isn't perfectly sealed. I look forward to seeing the results of your trial.
Great video and your not knee deep in snow!👍
Thanks David! Yeah, we had a good amount of snow in November, but not much since.
Nice pickin'....both the salad greens and the guitar!!! Will definitely check out your other channel!
Thanks!
Looks scrumptious!! I will definitely have to try the parmesan cheese bakes. Seeing that purple pie makes me need to grow purple sweet potatoes.
Bambi got our carrots we had set to overwinter; the deer were especially fond of our cosmic purple carrots, lol. Your carrots looked great.
Love the channel, shared this video. Thanks for taking us along and for sharing recipes; sharing is caring ❤
Thanks Angela! I'm sorry Bambi got your carrots. And thanks for sharing the video.
@@OneYardRevolution Bambi enjoyed the fresh organic treats. I can always go to Aldi, they have a great organic section, poor Bambi has to eat what he can find. We had a lot this summer, and he left me a few purples and a yellow carrot to have a beautiful fresh salad in December. I cannot complain.
I've learned a lot of great tips from your channel. Love the channel, Love to Oscar.
Thank you for the recipes. For a variety of reasons I'm going to cut back on eating meat but honestly I'm not sure how to build a meal without basing it around meat. The more ideas the better.
Try more Italian foods and Indian foods...pastas and curries are a great place to start. It takes a shift in mindset to break away from meat-focused meals. When i first went vegetarian I bought a lot of veggie burgers and fake bacon and sausage, but eventually I looked to cultures that have naturally vegetarian meals and stopped eating mock meats. There are a lot of awesome veg cooking channels on youtube...Connie's Rawsome Kitchen, Sweet Potato Soul and Avant Garde Vegan are some of my favorites.
Thanks @@Unks_Is_Cracked. That's part of my problem though. I LOVE potatoes, pumpkins, winter squash, and rice. BUT I've been recently been diagnosed with Diabetes. So I think leafy green vegetables are on the menu so to speak. Well, leafy greens and Delicata squash. I'm not giving them up for nuthin'!
Thank you @@michelepaccione8806. I have been thinking along those lines. "Fake" anything doesn't really appeal to me and in this case, knowing me, they look more like a gateway drug back to meat than a way off the butcher wagon. I have been looking at Indian food in particular. There's a RUclips channel called "Chef Buck" and he's doing a lot of Indian and general vegetarian dishes that look interesting. Italian food I love but I find it hard to envision without pasta. I love the stuff but as I mentioned to Spankifus5 I've recently been diagnosed with Diabetes. Pasta doesn't have to be a "disasta" for me but still I don't want to build a diet that focuses on it.
Thanks for the channel suggestions. I'll look into them.
Ah....I see. Soups are good and easy to make, too. Lentil, minestrone, pumpkin/tomato, bean chili, etc. I make them a lot in the colder months. Maybe brown rice instead of pasta? Sweet potato soul really concentrates more on healthy, whole food recipes that are easy to make. Connie's is more Italian, and Avant Garde Vegan is restaurant-quality meals prepared by a chef. I'll have to check out Chef Buck. Diabetes "runs in my family," but I've been a vegetarian for a long time and have so far avoided it. Change in diet is very helpful. Best of luck with the new way of eating!
Hi John! This FB album shows many of the meals we make and includes links to recipes: facebook.com/pg/oneyardrevolution/photos/?tab=album&album_id=739567286082340
I love this channel so much❣️💖💜
Thanks Anne!
I need to come visit you Patrick. This is beautiful and mine is not nearly as fruitful
jeff kolp n
Hi Jeff! It definitely takes some time to get the hang of fall/winter gardening. Yours will get better every year as you gain experience.
August germination with hot dry soil coupled with time limitations have been the challenge
It might help to start some plants indoors. When is your first frost? Is it possible you can plant a little later when it's not as hot?
Definitely start some indoors. First frost is 10.10 - indianapolis. Also going to try some shading cloth at planting then elevate once emergence has occurred.
Another great harvest, Patrick! I love Arctic King lettuce as well, but have had poor germination for the past few years. Not sure what the issue is but will keep trying.
Thanks Sandra! We start most of our lettuce indoors for the fall and winter. The cooler indoor temperatures help with germination.
Ok, thanks for that tip, Patrick!
Amazingggggggggggg
The hoop house is looking fantastic Patrick. Hope Oscar is doing well? It is always great to be harvesting throughout the winter. Its fantastic to grow salad in zone 5 right through the winter. Great video. What plans do you have for next years garden Patrick? Tony
Thanks Tony!
So double cover only keeps plants 7 degrees above outside temperatures (on cold nights I'm assuming)? I've heard this about greenhouses(that temperatures are still very low at night) and it always made me question their efficacy. I wonder how much the lack of wind increases cold/frost resistance as well. Great to see a new video, you're the most authentic gardener on youtube.
Thanks Phillip! The low under double cover is usually more than 7 degrees above the outside low, especially after a sunny day. The lowest temperature we recorded last winter under double cover was 10. The low outside that day was well below 0. Almost all of our plants thrived through the winter. You're intuition that lack of wind and other damaging elements is a factor is absolutely correct.
Oh sweet, I’m especially interested in hearing more music from you!
Thanks Caleb!
I enjoy the videos. What do you space most of your greens? Lettuce, kale, spinach and claytinis more specifically.
i love tatsoi in stir fry!
Hi Patrick (and Oscar),
Thank you for your great videos; I love them all. A while ago you built a raised bed slightly angled towards the sun. I was wondering if you have noticed any significant differences and if you would do it again? Take care, from Canada, David
Thanks Dave! There are so many factors that it's hard to attribute results to a single factor, but we've had great results and I'd definitely build our raised beds at a slight slope toward the sun if I had to do it over again.
Lovely to watch Patrick, did you really eat all those leafy greens in a single meal! The real question though is how do you store your cucumbers for so long? : All the best - Steve
Thanks Steve! I wish we still had garden cucumbers to eat. We had to buy those at the store. Best wishes with your winter garden!
Ah now that is disappointing, I thought you had a secret there, I've grown tomatoes for Christmas this year, so next year the challenge is cucumbers, wish me luck! : All the best - Steve
Hello Patrick, hey Oscar! Mmmm sweet potato pie, I'm definitely going to go check out that recipe. Who's the pup? I don't believe I've seen him/her before. I'm going right after this and go subscribe to your music channel. 👍🏼
Thanks! That's my niece Ella (my brother's pup).
You need a bigger harvest bowl 😀
Bom dia tudo muito lindo maravilhoso!!@
Obrigado!
Oscar be like..
"As long as u shooot me with those cameras, i'll accompany you in the garden," you narcistic feline oscar you.. love you..
My dog really likes your music. Mr. Spike is a music conesuir
I'm happy to hear Mr. Spike enjoyed the music!
Hi Patrick, I am really enjoying your videos even though I have never grown one veggie myself yet. But I will get started in 2019 in our new garden. I am curious, did you ever weigh everything you harvested over the course of one year?
Thanks Pauline! We haven't attempted to weigh all of our produce for a year (it would be a monumental task 😀). I started a series in which I weighed produce for a week each season, and even that was difficult. Here's a playlist of that series so far: ruclips.net/video/hM2ZVW416rk/видео.html Best wishes with your new garden!
Oscar is so cute. He has a batman-like mask. The Bat Cat.
Do you keep the hoop house up all year or take it down when it warms up? Oscar is stealing the show in this video!
Oscar always steals the show! LOL We remove the greenhouse film in the spring, but the frame stays in place.
Hi Patrick. I love your hoop house and low tunnels. I will definitely check out your new channel! QUESTION: What is the name of your purple sweet potato plants? The purple ones I had didn’t stay purple once cooked.
Also, how are you able to harvest your carrots all throughout the winter? Doesn’t the raised bed freeze solid?
Thanks Linda! They're purple Japanese Sweet Potatoes. The skin and flesh are both purple. The soil in the carrot bed may temporarily freeze in the middle of winter, especially if we have a number of very cold cloudy days in a row. But it thaws pretty quickly on sunny days. It gets pretty hot under the plastic dome.
Hello from southern Maine, another 5B location. I have some Hungarian Pink Lettuce started in trays under lights but the plants don't look too good. Do you start them or sow in spring? Can you offer any advice? I can't wait for February to set some things in my new cattle panel greenhouse. Thanks and Happy New Year!
We start this variety in late summer/early fall and indoors in January to plant out in February and March under cover. We start sowing seeds outside under cover in March. I hope this helps!
Oscar the overseer!
lol
Wow!!! So much great food you have there!!!! And what a wonderful furry companion!!!
Can I ask where are you based? What country?
Thanks!
you even make music?! haha just submited to that one. thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
enjoyed your video
Thanks Jackie!
Love your videos on shade-tolerant plants, winter hardy plants and I have a question. How would you compare Siber Frill with Dinasour Kale and Red Russian Kale?
Thanks, Amin! We haven't had much luck with Red Russian kale because it is more vulnerable to bacterial soft rot. Siber Frill is our favorite winter kale because it is very cold hardy and is more tender and sweeter than other varieties. We also like Dinosaur Kale, but it's not nearly as tender as Siber Frill.
Oscar parece que tiene un antifaz como Batman jajaja
lol
Im not Oscar. ..im Batman...
Jill Barlow that’s what I think 🤣😂
Same here.
Hey Patrick, great stuff, including of course the music! Subscribing :-) I have loads of Emerald Oak lettuce doing very well - have you ever grown this variety?
Thanks Rebecca!
Hes back
Patrick, you mentioned the plants in the hoop house were spaced very close together. Is this done intentionally? Does it help in keeping the plants a bit warmer being so close by restricting air flow? Would you say a couple inches apart on all plants? I appreciate all these videos. Thank you for all the great info!
Hi Michael! Yes, we intentionally plant greens very close together for the fall/winter garden. It helps with insulation and increases our yields during months when growth is very slow. We space lettuce and kale about 6 to 8" apart.
check out the purple potato pie! that looks awesome haha
Thanks!
I need one of those round covers could you tell me how you made it
Hi Patrick! What is the variety of your small carrot? 🥕
This winter we're growing Napoli and Nelson carrots
How is that you don't have any snails/slugs or other pests eating your lettuce and the other plants? (I don't see holes in the leaves... leaves seem to be so clean...)
It's cold enough at this time of year that these pests aren't active in the garden.
how many daily direct sun hours it receives in October?
When did you put in your mustard green seeds for this harvest?
We planted the greens very early in the fall.
I have a question so I have a bunch of bamboo that drop leaves every year and I know the leaves are high in silica plus other minerals but I can’t find anything that says I could use them in compost or just as mulch so do you or anyone know anything about it?
Yes, you can use them in compost.
20c in winter not bad man mine rarely hits 20 in winter in a zone 9a haha what!? cheap ebay greenhouses i guess lol does yours get as cold as outside? mine pretty much does lol useless thing, overhead protection from frost and rain tho
Yeah, I have to be careful to vent enough. It can get quite a bit hotter than 20c if I'm not careful. The lows under double cover are consistently higher than outside, though they can get pretty close at night after a number of very overcast days.
Do you ever have to water it
Hi Nelda! We don't have to water at this time of year, but we'll start hand watering again in February.
What other kinds of lettuce are doing okay for you in the hoop house?
Hi Laura! We're growing Red Romaine and Rouge d'hiver. They're both fairly cold hardy. I'll try to do an update on all the varieties and how well they do this winter.
Looking forward to that update!
Hi, do you have aphids issue with the lettuce?
Hi Stephanie! We're fortunate not to have issues with aphids. It's too cold for them at this time of year and lady bugs do a great job of controlling them in summer. Organic insecticidal soap sprays are a good option for controlling aphids.
What part of chicago are u in?
I live north of the city.
Who handles the camera ?
I'm also the cameraman
