Oscar, that vicious beast attacking you at the end! I’m in zone 8b Oregon and I grow kale in low tunnels through the winter. The tunnels are probably not necessary temperature-wise but it helps to keep the rain and wind off of the plants. Plus, I grow lettuces and other greens that are more tender in the tunnels anyway, so might as well. Keep those videos coming!
I have been waiting a long time for another video from you. I enjoy watching all your videos. Welcome back. Stay warm and keep on growing on.👍from Southeastern Illinois.
Our kale is doing amazing here in Arizona where our winter temperature varies. I cover them at night just to protect them from frost and uncover them in the early morning as soon as the sun comes out.
OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening we live in 9b and I cover them and our tropical trees/bushes (Barbados cherry, Jamaican cherry etc.) with shade cloth covers that has a dual purpose of keeping the frost off of the leaves during the winter and protecting from sun burn during the spring and summer. So far it’s working for us and everything is thriving.
I just shared this video and tagged a friend to it that lives in Ohio to show her what is possible in her region. Also so that she can learn and employ some of your inexpensive techniques that work so well.
Don't forget that with a regular high intake of kale and all the other brassica family, you need to vigilantly maintain a good iodine intake, eg from iodised salt. Brassicas contain powerful goitrogens which reduce the action of the thyroid, increasing the dietary requirement for iodine. There are also many other anti-nutrients in kale and other brassicas which can cause health issues, but hopefully unlike a herd of cows or sheep, we are able to choose a widely varied diet, and not be forced to eat nothing but kale, cabbage and broccoli all day every day!
THE PATRICK AND OSCAR SHOW' TRIUMPHANT RETURN!!!!!!!! Missed your content, no more sabbaticals for you! Btw using Jess' mini greenhouse method planted early November, I have sprouts!
Nice to see another video! I put my Cale in when the garlic comes out. My wife blanches it, shapes it in a one cup measuring scoop and freezes them on a tray, then we put them in vacuum bags and freeze until needed. It's funny, you protect yours from freezing to preserve it and we preserve ours by freezing it🙂! We like ours in pasta sauce or chicken (tofu maybe) picatta. Take care Klaus .
Thank you for putting in the zone adjustments! I love watching your videos, but I'm over in zone 9 and have struggled with adjusting your garden tips to my climate.
As usual, very clear, succinct, and informative. That calendar link will be great! Zone 7 I am using one layer and I am getting great results! I did have some problems with snails and moths.. next year I will have to use the methods you mentioned to take care of the problem. THANK YOU!
I just got the excel file of Fall planting...excellent work. I started mine a little later, My plants are small but still growing! I love that I don't have to weed!
Great video! I really appreciate the addition of how to adapt what you're doing to various zones. It makes it much easier to use the great information your share.
Only if I had Oscar to help me out. Finally moved into a house with huge backyard. Will be catching up with all your previous videos to have a sustainable garden in next few years. Thank you for all the input and updates.
Nice to see you two back. Real nice to see green growing stuff. Making plans to set up some type of greenhouse/hoop house in the spring. I'm in zone 4a but this sounds do-able. Thanks.
Glad you're back...I was just telling my family how I was hoping you would do another video soon. Always fascinated to see how you garden in such a frigid climate! (I'm zone 8a down here in Georgia).
Here in South Carolina I grow Lacinato Kale and Champion Collards using one layer hoop houses when the weather turns cold. We’re in 7b. Thanks for another really good video.
I'm so glad I found your channel when i moved to colder Utah almost 2 years ago, and now that the house im buying is in a zone 5b, your channel is just that much more applicable! Great video! Thanks! I also enjoyed seeing your hoop house. I cant wait to get one in at our new place.
Thanks for posting a winter video! I've been going through withdraws, not many youtubers post winter garden updates. I'm growing kale, spinach, lettuce, carrots, and radishes in zone 8a.
Excellent video. Great info. I'm trying my luck next winter. Tried a couple of times, good results on a much smaller scale. Thank you for your valuable time, research and presentation. You and Oscar know your stuff. Robe from Eastern, Ontario near Cornwall, Ontario Canada.
love your videos! They are helpful and make me think about what I am doing. Have you tried spreading the contents of your compost pile on the paths between your beds in the row house? If you incorporate some composted manure into the compost it might cook all winter in the hoop house. Just a thought in case you haven't tried it before. Thanks for sharing your garden ideas!
Thanks for the video! I just found your channel. There are not many gardening channels in my zone so I am happy to see someone else trying to garden through the challenges of snow and cold weather. Very informative, easy to watch and great quality videos. I am curious where you are located and how much space you have. Thanks!
Have missed your vids!! I finally have lettuce growing in my hoophouse this winter, thanks to your encouragement. Also kale under plastic in the garden. May not make it through the Wisconsin winter, but any extra months are very welcome. :-)
I like your videos, and your "how to grow"-videos🙌 Thank you, and have a great christmas, and a happy, healthy growing-year. Kind regards Anette Sweden
Your hoop house videos get me through the winter. Do you have foam insulation down to the frost line around the outside of the hoop house? You could probably add a rosemary bush in the cold frame.
Thanks Larry! In addition to the 6 mil greenhouse film on the hoop house, there's an extra layer of plastic on the lower north wall and reflective bubble insulation on the north and west walls.
So glad you're back, I've missed your videos! They are always informative, thoughtful, and most importantly there are always things I learn! I'll be building a greenhouse and since I'm zone 8 I'll need to have cover for warmth that doesn't overheat since we can go from 30 to 70 in a couple days, I've heard some interesting things about solawrap and I was curious if you've used it.
Thanks Bri! I've never used Solawrap. I know it's a good insulator. Does it also help prevent overheating? With temperature swings like that, you might want to consider automatic vent openers.
SO, So glad you are back!!!!! You were missed. Thanks for the link to the planting guide. I also enjoyed learning about all the different types of kale. QUESTION: Where do you get your seeds for those varieties? It looks like you are also growing some lettuce varieties? QUESTION: what kind are they? Lastly, glad to see Oscar too.
Thanks Linda! I got a lot of the seeds from Bountiful Gardens, but they're no longer around, so I'll have to save seeds and find new suppliers. For lettuce, we're growing Hungarian Pink Winter, Arctic King, Winter Density, Red Romaine, and a couple leafy red leaf lettuces.
OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening Thank you Patrick. I just received a seed catalog in the mail. I’ll take a look and hopefully I’ll find the ones you listed. Do you have a favorite kale and a favorite lettuce? If so, what are they?
OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening I understand why you would grow so many varieties of kale, but I’m curious; what is it about Siber Frill and Starbor that make them “your” favorites and the same question for your favorite lettuces.
Hehe, and I thought I had lots of plants with my 8 or so plants! Thanks for all the Oscar footage, he seems to be on great form. :-))) - Great info, unfortunately our greatest problem here in zone 8 is not cold, even though it does get cold, but lack of sun, we can go weeks without any and that really does stop any growth.
Yeah, Oscar was definitely ready to make another video. lol Yeah, in your case, you'd want to plant even earlier to make sure plants are close to maturity before daylight is limited.
Your right I didn't get chance cover my collards kale& mustard greens and their is alive in freezing weather. But my red oak leaf lettuce didn't survive the hands& cabbage worms. None of the lettuce survived this year. And I replanted 5 times.
I'm glad you collards, kale, and mustard greens are still doing well. They should be pest free for a while now. We also transplant some of our winter lettuce after the last frost to reduce pest damage.
Hi Patrick it is good to have you and Oscar back again, you have been missed. I always learn something new from your videos, thank you so much. By the way, what is in the black buckets inside the hoop house? Merry Christmas and a joyful holiday season to you and yours. God Bless. :-)
This was a great video! I'm not getting enough videos from you though! I need more! 😂 One question what is the silver looking lining in the hoop house? It looks like it's only on one side behind the cold frame. 🤔
Thanks Pamela! That's reflective bubble insulation. We have it on the north wall and west walls of the hoop house and cold frame. It provides a little extra insulation and reflects light back on the plants.
Great video ... I have seen many of your videos and you give a lot of great tips, plus a lot of inspiration! I already made a copy of your Fall Planting Calendar. Do you have a spring/summer equivalent? Would love to use that as a guide this coming spring. Thanks!
I just didn't get to much done this cause my mother had be sick with heart& oxygen levels and she has passed to heaven in October. Next year will be better.
I noticed you insulated with bubble wrap this year, and added thermal mass storage. Has it kept it warmer in the cold temps we have been getting so early this year?
Have you ever tried reflective products like Reflectix on the north side of your hoop house? It looks interesting but don't know if it has much insulating properties besides just reflecting the sunlight.
Hi Jean! Yes, the north and west walls of the hoop house are covered with reflectix. We covered the west wall too because it is completely shaded anyway. It adds a little bit of insulation (every little bit counts) and the light reflection helps too.
love the calendar! How do you eat kale? Cole slaw, soup, stir fry? I bought seeds but I don't know how to use it unless I treat it like cabbage. thanks!
We eat it raw in salads, in stir fries and pasta dishes, as a cooked side dish, and more. This photo album shows many of the ways we eat greens: facebook.com/pg/oneyardrevolution/photos/?tab=album&album_id=739567286082340
Patrick, may I ask where you bought the insect netting you spoke about? I struggle bad with worms and moths. I’m desperate to not fight them all next year.
will my streetlights help to encourage winter growth?.......off topic , i wanted to inform people that i have discovered how to use wild annoying ivy to aerate /turn your compost.........just keeping tossing your grass clippings and branch-less yard debris on top of existing ivy growing on your property. i can dig down to my elbows in the results. just tug away at the vines for awhile its quite easy due to all the humus hiding below. ....the top edge of a ravine is a great spot, just keep branches in a separate pile to rot on its own, til it breaks up by walking? jumping on it occasionally, no need to waste energy chipping it if you are not in a fire-prone area.
you could try kale chips. not sure how, since I eat it raw. someone made some for me, very simple I think its just rub some oil and toast them in the oven it gets crispy. it was very good but I am too lazy. I just get down on all fours and chew it right off of the plant that's how I eat it
Thanks Jeff! I don't have any music available for sale at the moment, but I'm currently working on record an album of new songs. And I'll start a music channel soon. I'll let everyone know when I do. Thanks for your interest.
Good information. I just got my greenhouse up a few weeks ago. I'm in CT, zone 6. It sounds like I'm too late to start anything right now, correct? Are there any plants that I could start now? or should I wait till February when the sun is out longer?
Thanks Dave! You can start planting cool weather greens indoors now and transplant them into the greenhouse in February. Make sure to harden them off for a few days in the greenhouse before transplanting.
****** Hi Patrick. Beautiful. Where do you get the best price on netting for your brassicas. Last year I used a row cover, but I think that was too much cover. It got really humid in it. Thank you my friend.
Thanks Lark! This is the insect netting we used: amzn.to/2EgN4Sm It will hold heat and humidity, but it worked well in our hoop house area because it was in partial shade in late summer.
Your bubble wrap isn't there permanently is it? I don't recall it there in the spring. If it goes up and down with seasonal change, can you discuss how you adhere it?
Is Siber-Frill good on flavor? I'm enjoying Dwarf Blue Curled Scotch, and would like to find others with good flavor, since some kales taste better than others. Your favorites?
Hi Juliana! Yes, I covered the PVC in the hoop house with white Gorilla Tape. But I didn't cover the pipes in our hinged low tunnels and have never had any issues with the plastic reacting to the PVC. This may be because we only cover the structures during the cold months when the sun is less intense.

Glad you are back.

All this hoop housing and growing such a variety of vegs/herbs is encouraging - for anybody !
The beautiful thing of living in zone 9b in California is I have a few more weeks until my first winter tomatoes harvest 😍😋
That is a beautiful thing, Simone!
Your ears must have been burning as I was talking about your channel yesterday. Hello Patrick and Oscar. See you soon, Please!!!
Oscar, that vicious beast attacking you at the end! I’m in zone 8b Oregon and I grow kale in low tunnels through the winter. Thanks David!
I live in Florida and I'm growing kale, spinach, collards, and cabbage right now. They aren't effected by few cold days here.
I'm glad to hear you're growing this winter in Florida, Katrina!
Good to see you back Patrick.
Thanks Charlie!
Our kale is doing amazing here in Arizona where our winter temperature varies. I cover them at night just to protect them from frost and uncover them in the early morning as soon as the sun comes out.
That's great to hear, Daniel! It's possible that you may not need to cover them at night. They don't really mind a frost. What zone are you in?
OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening we live in 9b and I cover them and our tropical trees/bushes (Barbados cherry, Jamaican cherry etc.) with shade cloth covers that has a dual purpose of keeping the frost off of the leaves during the winter and protecting from sun burn during the spring and summer. So far it’s working for us and everything is thriving.
If it's less work to only cover the tropical plants, you can definitely skip covering the kale.
you should try leaving some kale uncovered, it is definitely a cold weather crop I hear that is tastes a little better after exposed to frost
voidremoved thank you, I’ll do an experiment to see which way works/tastes better.
Think over the next year you will get more followers. Food prices set to boom, so grow all you can and swap with friends.
Excellent kale information. I never used the 10-hour son rule for kale thanks for sharing that.😎😎😎
You're welcome!
Lol Oscar letting himself out. I love him so much.
Oscar really went all out for this video. lol
Glad your back, that's some beautiful, healthy looking kale. Hi Oscar long time no see.
Thanks Annie!
Thanks for the zone specific information, it really helps

I love kale! Use it on my salads, in my omelets, and especially in juice with apples and lime. 😋😋😋
Good to see you and Oscar, it has been a while. ;) Great video Patrick, thank you!
Glad you are back! Thanks for another good video.

Nice to see you two back. Real nice to see green growing stuff. Making plans to set up some type of greenhouse/hoop house in the spring. I'm in zone 4a but this sounds do-able. Thanks.
Thanks Mark! Yeah, kale, spinach, mache, and claytonia should do well under double cover in 4a.
Good to see Patrick.I also eat Kale every day. It survives the cold/frost well
Thanks Patrick! I'm glad you're enjoying kale at this time of year too.
Thanks for how to grow kale for fall and winter harvested.
Welcome back Patrick and Oscar!! 😻❤️😻❤️
Thanks Ana!
Glad you're back...I was just telling my family how I was hoping you would do another video soon. Always fascinated to see how you garden in such a frigid climate! (I'm zone 8a down here in Georgia).

Welcome back guys! Those greens are looking mighty fine! 😊 happy holidays. Hopefully you plan on seed starting videos. Look forward to them!
Your hoop house videos get me through the winter. Do you have foam insulation down to the frost line around the outside of the hoop house? You could probably add a rosemary bush in the cold frame.

I understand why you would grow so many varieties of kale, but I’m curious; what is it about Siber Frill and Starbor that make them “your” favorites and the same question for your favorite lettuces.
They're very cold hardy and I like how they taste.

Patrick, does this stragedy also work for lettuce? I'm in love with the hungarian pink winter you grow during the cold.
I noticed you insulated with bubble wrap this year, and added thermal mass storage. Has it kept it warmer in the cold temps we have been getting so early this year?
Hi Mary! Yes, we added them last winter. We've had good results with them, but I haven't done any temperature measurements.
missed the thermal mass storage, what was it? thanks :-)

Patrick, may I ask where you bought the insect netting you spoke about? I struggle bad with worms and moths. I’m desperate to not fight them all next year.
This is the netting we used: amzn.to/2EgN4Sm It will hold in heat and humidity, but it worked well for us in late summer and early fall.
I bought tulle netting for crafts on Amazon 54” by 40 yards for $12.
Have you tried growing scarlet kale?
Plan on growing some this year, was hoping you had some info on this specific variety?
Hi Theodore! Yes, we're growing Scarlet Kale now. We follow the same methods described in the video for Scarlet Kale.
Kale❤️
will my streetlights help to encourage winter growth?.......off topic , i wanted to inform people that i have discovered how to use wild annoying ivy to aerate /turn your compost.........just keeping tossing your grass clippings and branch-less yard debris on top of existing ivy growing on your property. i can dig down to my elbows in the results. just tug away at the vines for awhile its quite easy due to all the humus hiding below. ....the top edge of a ravine is a great spot, just keep branches in a separate pile to rot on its own, til it breaks up by walking? jumping on it occasionally, no need to waste energy chipping it if you are not in a fire-prone area.
You’re back! Great to see you. I’m growing kale but I don’t like it. How do you eat it?
Thanks! Try mixing it with other greens that you enjoy in a mixed green salad.
you could try kale chips. not sure how, since I eat it raw. someone made some for me, very simple I think its just rub some oil and toast them in the oven it gets crispy. it was very good but I am too lazy. I just get down on all fours and chew it right off of the plant that's how I eat it
voidremoved Hmm. That’s a new one.
ผักน่ากิน😄😄😄😄😍😍
Great job! Thank you
love your helpurr!
Glad you are back! Do you have your music for sale? I like your songs!
Thank you. @@OneYardRevolution
Your bubble wrap isn't there permanently is it? I don't recall it there in the spring. If it goes up and down with seasonal change, can you discuss how you adhere it?
Hi Cindy! Yes, I left the reflective bubble insulation up over summer, but added more this fall.
Is Siber-Frill good on flavor? I'm enjoying Dwarf Blue Curled Scotch, and would like to find others with good flavor, since some kales taste better than others. Your favorites?
Hi Laura! Yes, Siber Frill tastes very good and is probably my favorite. It's more tender and less bitter than most kale.
Thank you, Patrick. I'll try Siber Frill for sure!
Kale Caesar!
Kale is what my food eats.
it looks like you taped or wrapped the pvc hoops within the greenhouse. have you had issues with the 6mil plastic reacting with your pvc?
Hi Juliana! Yes, I covered the PVC in the hoop house with white Gorilla Tape. But I didn't cover the pipes in our hinged low tunnels and have never had any issues with the plastic reacting to the PVC. This may be because we only cover the structures during the cold months when the sun is less intense.
