    Patrick I believe after watching your channel for several years that you content has done 2 things. First it has educated people on everything from soil biology to recipies that compliment the harvest grown. Also it inspires many to grow even in small areas and do it with increased success . I know you have done both for me and I thank you for that

      Yes Patrick, I am so often overwhelmed to the point of inactivity in my large jungly space, which means another season with below-par harvests, immoral I think since I have so much land that I should be able to feed myself and several others from it!
      But to see you take the smallest beds, and lovingly tend them to produce useful amounts of delicious food from every little spot, is revelationary.
      I know I can never turn my entire area into the weed-free productive vista that I dream of (Charles Dowding's garden is the Impossible Dream here), but thanks to you I also know that I can concentrate on one little patch at a time, using season extension techniques and organic practices, to maximise production from THAT little area. Then move on to the next. As long as I can keep the free-range chooks off it!
      And of course, as long as the water supply holds out, which has been a problem almost every summer, with the coming one being forecast as direly dry. We garden at the same latitude, so our daylight hours are identical, but our temperature extremes and rainfall patterns are vastly unequal!

    I had a good pepper year, too. To use up some, I cut up chilies, bell peppers, onions, and garlic and put them in a brine of 3 T pickling salt to 1 quart water. I fermented them in a jar with airlock for about four or five days. Then I ran the veggies through the blender, adding a little brine and some vinegar to adjust the thickness. It makes a wonderful Tabasco-like sauce that’s great on eggs and potatoes. It freezes well, too.

    Your crops look delicious. I reared and tagged Monarchs this summer. Most of my garden is not fenced. Deer did not bother my Butterfly Bushes. Last year they ate my Tithonia. I planted Radish in early September to improve the tilth of my soil. Last week I planted Oats. I have Buckwheat, Oats, and Radish around my Butterfly Bush. Deer were eating my Gladiolus so I pulled most of them up and put them behind a fenced area. I could not compete with the deer so I have a Monarch butterfly garden.

      I am still rearing them. I ran out of tags:-( I ordered the minimum, (25) tags. I will know to order more next year. The butterfly bush is providings so much needed nectar. I am seeing untagged Monarchs. I would like to think mine have flown further south and these are coming from more northern regions.

    nice tunes on this video... I hope that's all you. look at all those peppers. this year I did not even get 1 decent pepper. no eggplant... plenty of zucchini, spinach, tomatoes all summer... 1 pear. my kale didn't do anything till a couple weeks ago now I get kale... about 20 nice pumpkins and a few winter squash... even ended up with about 40 garlic despite something devouring most of my scapes before I could. for some reason, my flowers were incredible this year, especially marigolds and nasturtium
    Underwhelming year for me overall but I have had worse. considering most of my effort this year was on building lots of new raised beds, I am not too disappointed... and my back yard fed me all summer. Next year will be very exciting for me due to a certain vegetable being made legal to grow... might even be able to share some footage of my garden now that it wont send me to jail...

    Welcome back!!!! I missed seeing you and Oscar. I was beginning to get worried. What a beautiful harvest. Thanks to you I had a fantastic garden despite the intense heat of July and August. All around I was hearing how it was a bad year for peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers, yet I did good and had great harvests. I attribute my success to you and your videos.
    Do you have videos on growing and care of your peach tree? I’d love to grow one too. I have an in ground pool I’d like to convert to a garden. I’m hoping you or your followers will have suggestions for me on how to convert this.
    Last, I have broke down my garden this week and composted everything. Some of my tomato leaves had black spots on them. Have I just ruined my compost pile?

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Linda! I'm glad you had a great year in the garden. I have a video on how I planted the peach tree, but that's it. All I do is prune the tree (mostly in late winter), and keep the ground covered with wood chip mulch. I don't use fertilizers or do any pest control. Your compost should be fine, especially if it cooks for a while.

      Whew. So glad to hear that I have not ruined my compost pile. It would have been a big deal to try and undo as I layered the composting materials.

    Great to see you back. Any chance you could update us on your greenhouse and what’s growing in there right now? Struggling to figure out what I can do in mine right now. Have lettuce popping up but not sure if there are more options this late in the season. Also zone 5.

      Thanks! Yes, I'll be giving an update on the fall/winter garden very soon. We have lettuce, kale, spinach, and carrots in the ground and more crops started in the grow room.

    I'm so impressed! We lost so many things to repeated hail storms and blight this year (Colorado, Zone 5a) and may lose a new dwarf pear tree altogether to fire blight. The weather just wasn't on our side. Our local CSA farm had 100 percent losses, so we felt lucky to have anything. We did get lots of green beans and a good potato harvest, as well as more tomatoes than last year, so that's something. Our tomato plants are blighted, so I expect we won't get much more from them. They only got to about five feet tall (indeterminate). NOT a good agricultural year.

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  6 лет назад +1

      I'm sorry to hear that, Pamela. Some areas in Colorado can be very challenging to grow in. We're fortunate to pretty good growing conditions most summers.

      Pamela next year will be so much better. I'm guessing I'm a bit north of you in Colorado (missed the hail) Last year we got hail and drought and you name it - it was a tough year to be a gardener in Colorado. Then this year the garden gave me nectarines so juicy and everything Patrick showed in abundance and all of last years problems faded to memory. Next year will be better.

      I hope you're right, Douglas. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm in the northern Front Range. I'm hoping for a good year. We plan to build three keyhole beds to grow more next year.

      My grandparents are from Springfield, IL. They had big gardens and grew most of their own food. My mother says the soil there is amazing compared to Colorado's clay soil. Her father fed a family of eight out of their back garden. I've always been impressed by that.

    So glad you are back! My potato harvest was very poor this year and I'm curious about the ring you grow in. And in a past video you were using (and happy with) the grows bags - are you no longer using them? Hoping nest year I will have a much better crop as potatoes are a staple for me :)

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  5 лет назад

      Hi Trish! Yes, we grow potatoes in raised beds and grow bags. We get better yields in raised beds, but grow bags allow us to grow potatoes in areas we couldn't otherwise. The ring is a galvanized steel fire ring, which we bought from Menards. It looks like they don't sell them anymore, but you can find them with other suppliers.

    Your front yard garden looks nice. It's much bigger than a couple years ago, isn't it? What will you be doing with your tomatoes that are still green when frost finally hits? Enjoy all those potatoes and your cushaw pies!

    • @OneYardRevolution
      @OneYardRevolution  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Yes, we keep expanding our front yard garden every year, but we're running out of space to expand now. lol We make a lot of fried green tomatoes, and I need to find a good green tomato salsa recipe.

    • @HaphazardHomestead
      @HaphazardHomestead 6 лет назад

      The next level for you is Rooftop Gardening, lol. If you have space to let some green tomatoes ripen slowly, you might be surprised how long you can enjoy them. When I pull tomatoes in October, I keep the ones that have that whitish color. They will ripen up just fine. I've had tomatoes even into January that way. But green tomato salsa sounds really good, too! :D

      You'll be able to make a lot of pies with 2 cushaws! We like this recipe: www.thespruceeats.com/cushaw-pie-recipe-3056939 Here's a more traditional recipe that uses more eggs, which gives the filling more of a custard quality: www.allrecipes.com/recipe/245002/old-fashioned-cushaw-pie/
