Hey hey man. I said i would let you know when i have my youtube channel up. So its up now sir. Thanks again for posting another good video. You are the man sir. I hope you enjoy my videos as well as i enjoy yours.
Do you also have a Summer/Fall planting calendar that you could share?
Over in Buffalo Grove, your videos provide me the best idea of what is possible in Chicago's Zone 5
i know Im kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released series online ?
What’s funny is earlier I was thinking gee it’s been a while since Patrick uploaded and here we are
ok, Patrick, No more Sabbaticals for you!I was having OYR videos withdrawal symptoms! You get back to work so we can all keep learning!tytyty for getting back to the important business of sharing your garden! As you can see, we ALL missed you very much! Quite glad you are back, have to agree with@Joseph Mccaferty, you are like an American version of the venerable Mr. monty Don!💓👍
Thanks so much! That's very nice of you to say. I hope to get back to a weekly schedule soon.
Thank you Oscar for letting Patrick do another awesome video.
I've been obsessively watching your spring planting videos this month and have used your calendar since January. I have loads of healthy starts, a low tunnel bed (uncovered for now) with spinach, mache, lettuce, and peas up, I'm planting root crop seeds out tomorrow and have Agribond standing by just in case, and I'll be eating homegrown organic food by mid-April because of your instructions. Clear, informative, scientific, and yes, revolutionary!
This old lady took delivery of two tons of compost Tuesday and spread it all within six hours over the lasagna system that covers most of my new back yard. Yesterday, I chipped the neighborhood's fallen branches for four hours because if they are willing to hand me their property's fertility, I'm down for that. Built a rabbit fence all by myself on Friday. Obvs, I'm pumped!
Wow, congratulations your gardening success! I'm glad my videos helped.
My back yard is still under 18 inches of snow. ☹️ Your video has warmed my cold heart.
I hope the snow melts soon!
Rewatching your videos to inspire me to garden this year. Hope you are doing well.
New video, new video, new video !!! 😊
Happy sowing Patrick! It's really amazing how lush your space gets when the vertical growth gets going! I feel for you with the kitty claws on the greenhouse plastic. I have two feral kitties that love to climb up on the roof of my hoop house. Oscar is looking good😀
You have been missed. Thank you for sharing!
Yes spring is almost here I love it. All my plants are still in side, I live in central Maine near the MT we still have about 3 feet on the garden. That's after about a foot melted this past weekend. Our indoor garden looks great, Peace and Love to you all
I hope it melts fast!
Oh So Glad you're Back! Missed the vids and Oscar! Thank you again for all your help and tips!
Blessings from TX
Finally planting. I am doing my best to hold back and watching you plant, kind of give that warm reassuring feeling that it won't be too long now :-) Thanks Patrick. Thumbs Up.
Happy planting!
New subscriber. This is fantastic info. I'm a seasoned gardener , but the "3 week" rule made my day. Thanks from Prince Edward Island
Thank you Patrick for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge. Love watching your channel because you get straight to the point and include more information in half the time that some of the other channels I've been watching do. Although I have been avid gardener for over 30 years, I am relatively new to the Permaculture way. My heart was broken a few years ago when because of health reasons I was unable to till and plant my garden. While looking into alternatives such as container and raised bed gardening, I discovered the back to Eden method and it blew me away. I started my first no dig raised bed 3 years ago and thanks to gardeners like you I am able to continue gardening and doing so in a much healthier and a more environment friendlier way. This year we are adding 2 more beds which brings our total to 8. Thank you so much for the inspiration and all the help you have given to me.
I'm happy to hear you're back working in the garden again and that my videos have helped!
Always great to see a new video
Thanks!
Thank you for the planting calendar. Great to see your garden while we are still under snow..
You're welcome, Lori! I hope the snow melts soon.
Thanks for another update. I myself have spent the last week adding 11 new fruit trees to my back yard. It's been tough find varieties that are recommended for growing in my area (thanks Oregon State extension office), taste great and what each tree needs when it comes to being pollinated. I'm really excited for my Howard's Miracle plum tree. Keep up the good work
Wow, very productive week, Paul!
Patrick, I just keep coming back to your videos. I am a new gardener this will be my second year and I am so greatful to have found your show. It really is hard to know what information is good to follow when you are just starting out, the more I learn the more I respect what you do. Thank you for all of your excellent quality videos that are always just loaded with information.
I am also on my second year of creating a food Forrest about an hour west of Chicago using permaculture techniques, hopefully I will be successful and when I have an abundance of fruit in the future perhaps I can share with you just to thank you for helping make me a better gardener.
Best, most professional gardening videos I know of, thank you!
Thanks!
Sure do miss you. Wondering how your hoop house is fairing. I am a new gardener in an area within 3 hours of you and find your advice helpful. Want to eat greens in the winter like you! Hope you continue making videos and hope everything is ok on your homefront!
welcome back ! sure did miss your videos, !
Thanks Rose!
Patrick, so nice to see a video. Over the years, I have learned so much from your channel, as for season extension and what to plant when. Always appreciate your providing the help of a planting calendar. Enjoyed the visit. Have a great week! Catherine
Thanks Catherine!
Your channel is the best! So informative & love your cat! 🌱
Thanks Lindy!
My zone 5 hero! Thank you for the video Patrick!
I love this time of year. Can't wait til the weekend to get all our stuff planted. Thanks for the videos. And especially thanks for the planting calendar. Much appreciated.
Happy planting, Jennifer!
Thank you. That planting spreadsheet is amazing!
Sure nice to see you two again. Finally got some seeds started indoors. Now we just have to get rid of that last foot of snow.
I hope the snow melts soon, Mark.
Thank you for the Spring Planting Calendar .
You're welcome, Yvencia!
Welcome back! I was binge watching your videos yesterday and looking for new videos! Always excited to see a new upload from you.
Thanks Louisa! Great to hear from you. Best wishes with your garden.
Growing lettuce, kale, tomatoes in UK. Thanks for sharing your experience and online video.
Hey Patrick and Oscar, great to see you! Happy plantings, and just on time for full moon coming, and Vernal Equinox this Wednesday :-) ...that vermicompost looks wonderful, the best for waking the soils nutrient base. See yous again in next update 👍
Thanks Rebecca!
Great video! We put in our first low tunnel last week and just started some seeds....we are so excited. You do a great job explaining things clearly and with just the right amount of detail.
Thank you so much for a video you made about woodchip in the past, the website with free woodchips drop off. We are waiting for our third load. Every time I am outside messying with the woodchip, I praise God and thank you (in my mind) for the information. Because you have saved us so much money, we wanted to support you by getting one of your hoodies! Thank you! #Oneyardrevolution
Thanks for your support! I'm happy to hear that chip drop came through for you.
Good morning! Glad to see another great educational video from you. Here in the deep south of central Florida I often use your techniques with some adjustments. Please continue teaching us.
That was good to watch. It’s nice to see you out there planting again. I was worried Oscar would make holes in your plastic, it’s nice that he wants to be out there with you.
Klaus
I’m hoping you are ok. Haven’t heard from you for a long time.
Thank you for your planting guide and your informative as always videos
You're welcome, Julie!
C'mon guys this is better that Monty Don isn't it? Welcome back Patrick.
Very high praise! Thanks!
All the best with the season. I know you will have a great one looking forward to see your produce.
Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave! Great to hear from you again.
YAY!!! Time to plan and plant!!! Thank you for the planting calendar to download!!! :)
You're welcome, Mandi!
Thank you for the video! Looks like the snow has retreated. Oscar is so entertaining! 🐾🌱👍
SOOOOO happy to see a new video! :) I'm curious...are you going to try again this year for tomatoes in June? I'm in zone 8 and last year I grew my first big tomato (Paul Robeson) after growing cherry toms for years and was able to harvest it on May 20th...so I was definitely rooting for you to get those big early tomatoes too... :)
Thanks Ambree! We've got some early season tomatoes started in the grow room that we hope to harvest by June. Wow, it would be great to be able to harvest tomatoes in May!
We rewatched Oscar's best last weekend so your ears must have been burning. Thanks sooo much for the planting guide as it will give me a good kick to start planning. Since last frost date is in June, I've got time and there is still a foot of snow outside. I've ordered some new perennials such as 2 grape varieties and purple asparagus with a shipping date in the near future. Can't wait to see my green asparagus that I started from seed last year pop up. It will be difficult not to sample for another 2 years. My front yard veg garden sadly has to be discontinued. No issues with neighbour's, it is the rabbits, deer etc with their nighttime snacking! Any suggestions that don't make it look like Fort Knox?
You're welcome, Valerie! I'm glad you enjoy Oscar's antics. Fencing is the best way to go with rabbits and deer.
Thanks so much for the calendar!!
You're welcome!
Yaaaaayyyy!!! It’s a new video!
Yay I missed your videos! Always helps me know when I should be doing what!
Love your little Nip head too. He’s so fun.
I have to be careful with venting- overheated several beds this year. Whoops.
Doesn’t your greenhouse plastic degrade faster by coming in contact with PVC? I saw a study where it creates a chlorine like compound. Have to look again at the article my nursery sent me on it when I asked. Was pretty thick though. Do you have suggestions?
Thanks Patrick- happy growing. Sure hope you’re able to post more videos, makes keeping on time more enjoyable.
Great information, thanks Patrick!
Thanks Margaret!
Now that the snow is melting I need to get my raised beds thawed out.
Patrick! WB Oscar too. Just planted peas yesterday. Somehow, some way our Sage and Chamomile made it through the freezing, windy winter. Our ONE strawberry plant is putting out leaves. Like you, we will be doing potatoes, pak choi, more lettuce and other spring stuff soon. Garlic is growing. We are swimming in weeds but that will change!
I'm happy to hear your garden is off to a great start!
Missed you
Thanks Lorann!
Great information and ideas. I have potatoes under cover in the ground now here in zone 6 as well as endive, collards, and salad burnett. I had seen videos you did last year about how to get vegies growing sooner in northern zones. Love your channel. Love to Oscar. ❤
I'm glad to hear you're off to an early start, Angela!
I love plant so much 😊😊😍😍
Nice video!
Spring planting here in Quebec: shovel snow
Nice raised beds with the cover. Did you make it yourself? I am also planing to build raised beds and will probably also made some with the cover.
Cant wait to have 007 vegetables and put them undercover :D
Thanks! Yes, we made the raised beds and the covers. This video shows how we made the hinged low tunnels: ruclips.net/video/1qwyFEmTsmM/видео.html
Thank you. Will check it out and maybe use the design :p
Welcome back! Hope to see lots of update videos as 2019 progresses!
Thanks for sharing the awesome planting calendar you use! I was having little luck on google.
Great video, welcome back and thanks for sharing another informational/motivational video.
Thanks Daniel!
I can’t believe you’re planting already! My garden is under 4 ft of snow still :( thanks for the videos, they are my hopes and dreams right now.
I hope the snow melts soon!
Thanks for the info!
This is such helpful information, thanks for your hard work putting this together in one video. The link to the Excel spreadsheet will also be very useful.
You're welcome!
Patrick, I don't know if you have discussed your approach to seeds much. Do you keep seeds yourself, or purchase new ones for each season? If you keep the seeds from the previous season (whether this is what is left over from the purchased seeds or otherwise), what do you keep them in? Are there different conditions you use for different types of plants/seeds? Said it before, but again: great videos, love the content, Oscar is awesome, and as always thanks for inspiring change one yard at a time.
GREAT channel, and thank you for the xls!
Awesomeness thank you for sharing 👍👍🌱🌱😍😍
Thanks Candi!
already harvested >2pounds leaf lettuce and 1lb assorted radishes!! Houston TX area (small crop cover during a light freeze in mid-January
Off to a great start!
good video
I notice you have artichokes listed in the guide, do you grow them and if so which kind. I live north of you in Minnesota. Yours is my favorite gardening channel. I tried bringing the roots from last year (did not get a crop) to see if I could over winter them, but I haven't checked yet. This year I plan to try bags. I know they get really big but then I wouldn't have to dig up the roots, giving them a better chance of survival. I keep referring people to your video on how you got plants to survive sub-zero weather, every time they worry about the temperatures getting lower in the future. Great job. Love Oscar, too bad my cat was not the type to do much in the garden, asides from roll around on his many catnip plants, collecting seeds. They are all he would plant.
We tried growing an artichoke variety that was hardy to zone 6. We kept it under double cover in winter. Unfortunately, it didn't make it through the second winter.
I know you have done some videos in the past about how much actual time you spend in the garden. Have you ever rough estimated how much time you spend in a year. What I'm really curious is if you've ever worked up a number for the average weekly time or even daily time spent in the garden from a typical year. Those numbers I think would be really helpful for me when evangelizing new converts. Thank you again for all you have done.
Every time I see Oscar I'm reminded of my stray Tuxedo cat Buddy, that found me one winters day and that I miss very much... please give Oscar a treat in the memory of my cat Buddy.
It's hard to beat a good Tuxedo cat. I'll give Oscar a treat in Buddy's memory.
Great video as always.!!
First time gardener here in Alaska. I started some cabbage seedlings for transplant next month. And might have to start over🙄 Very leggy😕
Hi Shannon! Yeah, they need plenty of light. Are you starting them under lights?
OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening in the windowsill. I figured they’d be ok with just that much light since it was “natural”. When I pot out my flower starts, I’ll use the lamp I was using for them on my next batch of cabbage seeds. And I thought 500 seeds were too many
Great info as always! I'm still a little way off but will follow your lead in my cold frames asap.
Hi Patrick...not sure if its all the mulch breakdown in our soil mixed with copious rain but for the last three years we have been letting all our lettuce go to seed then broad casting in Sept/Oct. It comes up and stays small over winter. Some we covered with clear shallow totes with mixed in chard and kale but even lettuce plants exposed still stayed alive and compact until the few warm days last week. Then everything just popped but not as large as yours. We have yet to cover those. Not sure what will happen but maybe there is something to check out there for you? As usual, your garden is so organized as is your planting. Thanks for the reminders of what else can be going on.
Hi Suzanne! I'm happy to hear your volunteer lettuce is doing well. We let some of our winter greens self-sow but usually plant lettuce more deliberately.
Thank you for all the info!
I'm curious to see what all you've got going on in your indoor growing room... Those lettuces you transplanted look just about ready for a first cut! I've got a variety of brassicas I've started that I'm hoping to move out to the garden soon and get a harvest before they get decimated by the bugs. Other than that, I've started a lot of the same plants: lettuces, peas, carrots
You're off to a great start! So far, we've started tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, tomatillos, sweet potatoes, lettuce, celery, kale, and collards in the grow room.
@@OneYardRevolution I didn't realize it was already a good time to start heat loving crops. I don't get a ton of sun so I won't try much with tomatoes and peppers but I do think I will start some sweet potato slips soon. Just saw your video on those
Best video to date! (IMO)
I really enjoy your videos. I have been following you for about 6 months now. I was wondering if you have made a video on how to make your double wall plastic bed covers? I am in the same zone here in Iowa. I need to build cold frames and other ideas such as yours to extend our seasons and protect against those unpredictable frost events.
Thanks Mark! This video shows how I made them: ruclips.net/video/1qwyFEmTsmM/видео.html
Alll your videos are helpful. And I always give you 👍.. Have a fantastic day..!!
Thanks!
Thank you for the Spring Planting Calendar and all the information you provide. I believe you are in Zone 5b, right?
You're welcome, Kevin! Yes, we're in 5b, but the planting calendar is based on last frost date, so you can use it if you live in an area that has freezing temperatures in winter.
Love your channel! It has been very helpful! Do you have a video on how you made the dome cover for the fire ring planter?
So helpful. Thank-you. Do you have any tips or plans for building a covering like that in a dome shape over a regular garden? One that could later be removed? TIA!
Very good!
thank you
You're welcome, Pereti!
I love your channel ^^
Long time, where have you been?
Hi Thomas! I haven't had as much time to make videos lately but hope to get back to a weekly schedule soon.
Nice to see you back.
Weekly schedule sounds good Patrick! Looking forward to it.
Patrick, do you have the plans for the hinged double covers? I’m interested in making those. It would be awesome to start 6 weeks earlier. Thank you
Hi Cesar! This video shows how I built the hinged low tunnels: ruclips.net/video/1qwyFEmTsmM/видео.html
hi Patrick, nice to see another very informative video form you! i have a question about the seeds started indoors. is there a difference in when to start the seeds indoors if having grow lights vs just in the window? i do not have grow lights and my seedlings seem to grow much slower, should i adjust the planting time? tks
Thanks! I use the same planting date when planting under lights or in a window.
@@OneYardRevolution thank you, Patrick!
Been out scouting for land?
Very nice. Thank you
Hi Patrick, I truly enjoy all your videos and your so well kept garden, sooo envy lol, by the way do you have a video on how to do the hoops for your beds? and how about the conduit trellis you use?
Thanks! This video shows how I made the hinged low tunnels: ruclips.net/video/1qwyFEmTsmM/видео.html
I have a lean-to greenhouse connected to the side of my house. Would that, in zone 5, be considered single cover? There are insulated walls on 3 sides, and clear plastic roofing sheeting (the harder stuff, not the flexible sheeting like you have). All the holes have been filled with insulation foam. It's pretty tight, but it does get cold in there in deep winter. Raised beds at 16". A lot of stuff in buckets.
Because of the warmth from your house, your greenhouse should offer more protection than my single cover structures. Assuming your greenhouse gets plenty of sun, I'd experiment starting cool weather plants 3 to 6 weeks early in the raised beds. I'd succession plant over that time period to be on the safe side. One thing to consider about smaller containers is that the soil freezes and thaws repeatedly, so you'll want to plant later in them.
Great video! Just wanted to say thank you for the planting calendar - I'm going by the dates on the spreadsheet this year for my zone 6 garden and it's very, very helpful! I'm hoping to have a lot more success this year. Thanks again for such a useful tool!
Thanks Kelly! I'm glad the planting calendar has helped!
What Type of mulch do you uses in your walkways? I would like to do the same. Thank You 😊
We use arborist wood chips (wood chips from a variety of trees) from our town's forestry department. If your town doesn't provide them, you can usually get them from a local arborist or through this service: getchipdrop.com/
LOVE OSCAR!!!! Just what mine would do❤️😼
Big question on your film domes or hoop covers, how did you pull your film tight over your pipe? Thank you
Hi Marcheta! We used 1/2" PVC clips like these: amzn.to/2Odd9o5
Love the metal round planters. Where do you get those?
We're using these metal fire rings: amzn.to/2FdeEyI
Ohhhhh!! I’ve missed Oscar 🐈 he’s so handsome 🥕🏡
Love your garden. Are you using greenhouse plastic for your double cold beds?
Thanks Donna! Yes, we're using this 6 mil greenhouse film: www.greenhousemegastore.com/standard-clear-greenhouse-film-6mil
Wow...Quick reply. You are on top of your communications. But it stands to reason... Wish I was as organized and productive in my garden (and my life) as you are! While I have your ear, I have some Malabar Spinach to plant today. Will this reseed the planting area? Trying to decide if I need a semi-permanent location or regular replant yearly rotation area.@@OneYardRevolution
Yes, malabar spinach can re-seed. If you live in a colder climate, make can wait until after the last frost before planting seeds. We usually plant it in late May.
Did you not harden off the lettuce because you were planting under 2 layers of cover?
Hi Marilyn! We had them in a shaded spot in the hoop house for a couple days before planting.
Love what you are doing. I'm going to be making more transitions to beds with single and double cover throughout this year. Thanks for the inspiration. Do your metal rounds out front have bottoms or are they just rounds? Where do you find them?
Thanks Scott! Best wishes with your efforts to extend the growing season. I'm glad my videos have helped. These are the metal rings we use (no bottom): amzn.to/2FdeEyI
