  • A little bit of motorcycle riding fear is good, but when it goes too far it holds us back from doing the thing we love. Join me on my Triumph Bonneville T120 Black for a relaxing POV ride on one of Oregon's most beautiful forest roads as I talk through how I cope with fear and anxiety, on the bike and off.

    My bucket list plan was to ride across Canada ( 12,000 km round trip). I bought a new 2018 Bonneville at the start of the riding season of 2019. After my safety riders course, I had lots of time to plan this trip because of the pandemic. I finally started my trip in June of 2022 and once I left the mountains of BC, I began to have serious anxiety and fear, I began second guessing everything, and asking myself "should I turn around? this is just crazy!" ...but my stubborn pride kept me going and I conquered my fear. It took me 21 days round trip from BC to Nova Scotia and back. This was an epic adventure that I will never forget...and I'm so happy that I did not succumb to my anxiety and fear.

    A friend said to me, “when you gonna get a real bike? Mine has a radio, windscreen etc.”. I really don’t want that. The wind, the smells, the engine sound and the freedom is what I’m after. If I want to listen to the radio I’ll stay in my garage.

    I'm 47, anxiety was something I grew up with quietly as it was seen as a weakness in days gone by. I ride but have all the same 'what if's' , breakdown, collision, accidents and more but, what IF we don't ride we'll never be alone on that beautiful road or see amazing sights that would never have been seen. Whether it be a quick 1hr ride or a whole day in the saddle the achievement that new roads or old roads you ride all the time bring you an amazing feeling. Sometimes things go bad but mostly things go fine, let's hold onto the fine and deal with the bad if and when they happen. Happy riding to all.

    • @BugMotoChannel

      "Sometimes things go bad but mostly things go fine..." That's a really important thing to realize, I think. So simple, but really kinda deep when you really dig into it.

      It is, people with anxiety more often than not over think everything!! Holding onto the 'fine' and 'good' takes practice, just like riding.

    Excellent perspective. Nailed it. I find once I get going the fear and or anxiety fades away. I almost have to train myself to be only in the moment of riding and let everything else slip away. Stay focused on the ride and trust your abilities. After 50 years and still riding, what you experience still holds true for me.

    • @BugMotoChannel
      @BugMotoChannel  3 месяца назад +2

      Yup. I was going to say something similar in this video but it was getting too long. I sometimes feel daily life creeping into my thoughts when I'm riding, especially on long roads with no traffic. I have to step back and force myself to, if not think about the ride, at least focus on motorcycling in general. That usually pulls me right out of it. The other thing I do is I'll pop on some music in my Sena. I know some folks are anti-music, but music is a huge part of my life and mixing music and riding together for me is heaven.

  • @pdxt120
    @pdxt120 3 месяца назад +4

    Love the video. I am always surprised at the people who will make comments about how dangerous a motorcycle is and then they will walk over and get on their bicycle. I never felt in danger when I commuted by bicycle during my 20s and 30s even though I had colleagues who had some pretty serious accidents on their bicycles. My 20s and 30s was before the city I lived in had bike lanes, so I would commute every day taking up a full lane of traffic. The people who had accidents would try to ride as close to the curb as possible and to share the lane with the cars.
    I feel safer on a motorcycle because I do not have a temptation to share my lane with cars and I ride with the attitude that the lane I am in is my lane and the cars around me better not try to take my lane. There are still times when the drivers of cars will surprise me like when I am slowing down for a turn and they will try to sneak by in the 2/3rds of the lane I am not using. Depending on how close the car comes there are times when I may flinch. But cars are much less tempted to try to squeeze by a motorcycle, when they will always pass a bicycle in a lane of traffic without giving the bicycle enough room.
    I also comment to friends that to be really comfortable riding a motorcycle you have to have ridden a minibike, scooter, or dirt bike as a kid. When you were too young to really understand what is or is not dangerous. In the same way, if you only learn to ride a bicycle as an adult you may never feel comfortable commuting by bike. I don't know why it matters to begin as a kid, but I think like lots of other things we do as kids, when we do them without fear at one point in our lives, later on in life it is much easier to manage that fear when we do them again.

On the casual ride back home afterwards I actually learned over a bit, looked down at my tires and thought “ I was just going 70 miles an hour and had all my confidence and trust in these tires to hold me to the road through those corners “ we really do trust our machines and ourselves to handle them don’t we 🤔😎.

    I think fear and anxiety stem from a lack of readiness/preparedness. Be prepared, have a contingency plan if applicable no matter what you have going on.
    Motorcycle riding can be scary if you don’t have confidence in operating the bike. For me, motorcycle riding is exciting but also very relaxing. I ride alone 100% of the time. It is the only time I can mentally “sigh” and recalibrate my brain while also figuring out my life’s problems.

    Great video. Thanks. I have had the same misgivings about aspects of riding. I am lucky in that I have an engineers perspective on mechanical things and enjoy solving problems. I can and have McGivered my way out of a number of situations both in my car and on the bike. When I go on trips, which is fairly often, I'm only really concerned about where I will sleep that night. Of course I take some essential tools and a tyre repair kit, but I am also acutely aware that I can't prepare for all possibilities and the idea of control is actually a delusion. When I throw my fate to the wind I ride without apprehension and that's an exciting feeling - I know the universe will present me with opportunities and challenges because in that state I am not resisting. I am existing in concert with change. To me this is truly and primally being alive - and there is an overwhelming connection to the divine. Ride on brother.

    1st time I went out I was stressed out AF. Even fact it was late at night with little to no cars every time I saw lights in mirrors I panicked thinking "if I ride to slow they will crash into me"...
    Other funny thing is I had music on to ease the stress and honestly I was so focused I literally forgot that music is playing. Also I almost crashed when suddenly pot hole appeared, I jumped and somehow bike managed to ride over it...

    Our life stories have a lot in common with regard to anxiety and panic attacks. During spring 2023 I decided to get myself a 50cc scooter because of the ever increasing gas prices and traffic jams. Basically right from the start it just didn't feel right: too slow, (50km/h) too many traffic regulations about where you are allowed to ride and where not, (I'm from the Netherlands btw) so I became pretty frustrated.
    After 3 months I began to think about a motorbike, because I have ridden them a lot in my younger years and the last time was back in 2001. But then the anxiety kicked in: am I not too old at 69 years? Would I still know how to ride? What if..., well you probably know what I mean. That nasty little voice inside your head that had spoiled so many things for me in life already.
    Then I saw this great offer: a 32 years old GSX 600F in pristine condition, very well maintained and completely overhauled by the previous owner who happened to be a hobbyist and a professional mechanic. I drove over there to see the bike and oh boy! I felt so intimidated by it. But it was such a beautiful bike and for 650 euros the bargain of the year!
    When I got home I couldn't think about anything else and I had a sleepless night, too busy with fighting off my irrational fears, and the next day I contacted the guy and told him that I would buy it.
    A week later I picked it up. It was a one hour ride home and after 30 seconds in the saddle it felt like I have been riding just a week before instead of 22 years. So familiar...
    The only fear that I still have sometimes, is that of a sudden mechanical failure, like a blown out tire at high speed on a busy highway or in a fast corner, or a chain that snaps. Or an incident beyond my control, like being rear ended at a traffic light or being involved in a chain collision, but the more I ride, the more those fears disappear into the background.
    Fast forward 8 months and 3500 km and it's the other way around; if I am at home and I am starting to feel anxious or restless, I hop on my bike and go for a 60 km spin, while still working on my cornering technique, slowly building it up. When I get home again I feel completely refreshed, both physically and mentally.
    In the end it's the best and cheapest therapist that I have ever had. :D
    Ride on and stay Safe!

    My fear related to motorcycling is crashing or sliding. But not out of fear for myself but my motorcycle.
    I'm kinda obsessed on keeping my bike pristine, and an idea of getting it all scratched in a fall is pretty grim to me. I think if the crash is not too serious I will heal, but my bike won't fix itself, and I'll have to go through all the hassle of getting it pristine and mint again. xD
    Doesn't prevent me at enjoying the ride though..just a gloomy thought that pops in from time to time. Probably for the good as it keeps me on the edge subconsciously.
    I also get easily (too much) riled up at traffic situations when cars behave idiotic. Should really work on being cooler on my bike, but knowing smallest mistake means early grave (or a scratched bike xD), and car drivers just sometimes driving so carelessly just pisses me off to hell and back.

      I did the double seal, which is the 3M marine sealant around each spoke followed by a special 3M tape over all that. It holds air much better than the tube did. When you work with this stuff, you'll realize it won't fail.

    I discovered anxiety attacks at the age of 50: it's surprising! I got over it thanks to sophrology and, above all, thanks to reading authors like Eckhart Tolle, Sadhguru, Alan Watts and several Zen masters. And I discovered motorcycling. I'd never ridden anything other than a bike until I was 50, and that too was a revelation. My life changed and, looking back, those crises were the best thing that ever happened to me. Back in 2020 I had a very unpleasant experience riding my bike where I was overcome with an overwhelming feeling of fatigue which caused a panic attack while I was riding. This was at the end of the season so I didn't have the opportunity to get back on the bike to get used to riding again, then the covid lockdowns happened again over the winter which made my mental health deteriorate, then my parents got divorced and I developed bad anxiety because of that and many different stressors that made life too overwhelming. This anxiety made it impossible for me to ride, and I was even uncomfortable driving a car. Now I'm finally feeling better and more grounded. This year will be the first year since that episode that I'll be able to get back on the bike that's just been standing there for the past four years. I'm a bit anxious about it since I haven't ridden in so long, but I'm also excited and I hope that I'll be able to get to experience the joy of riding again.

      Here's some advice... Go spend some time with your bike before you get out on the road. Look it over. Check your fluids, your brakes, your battery. Take something apart and clean it, and put it back together. Just spend time with it, get to know it again, and make sure it's ready. I think that'll give you some confidence and renewed familiarity. Good luck!

    Hi Dan - I just found you. Your vids are a hoot and 0.5. Well shot, edited, nice AV quality. Most importantly, perhaps, is your sense of humor. As a man in his 65th year, your message and ruminations resonate. I first got my WA motorcycle license 20 years ago... and, sadly, have never used it. I'm seriously considering a T120 (which brought you to my attention). I'll need to off-load some guitar gear and some bicycle stuff to afford it. Then, the hard part: convincing my wife to go along. Great video. I've encountered few vids on how to deal with motorcycle fear and anxiety, although many do address motorcycle 'concerns' (the nuts and bolts of riding). There seems to be a hesitation that avoids the psyche when it comes to riding. There's definitely a psychological aspect to it or most of us probably wouldn't do it. It's too bad, because it's an area that many could probably speak to, many would gain from, but few ever do. Curious as to what others might think... I'm just south of Portland in Salem and looking forward to checking out some of your rides. Thanks!
