About 5:04 I would like to note, as a learning animator, you *do not* need to be an amazing artist when making a smear frame! However you do, but it depends on the animation and its tone. Also there is a job postion for, some, collage learning animators called an 'inbetweener'. This person would draw the inbetween frames from the start to finish, including smear frames. Wanted to add that bit in info.
I used to animate (even though it was bad) a few years ago so I watched a lot of animations so I noticed smear frames and thought they were the funniest things to ever exist. But I understood they were not an error just something to make the animation smoother

4:49 I was in an ameteur film camp a long time ago and all the kids were looking at animations made by the kids from the previous years on the tablets. One of them was a bouncing ball animation made by a kid who obviously didnt know how to use squash and stretch. Every single frame and every single motion had the ball squash or stretch wildly in some way, and it just looked unnatural. When I pointed out how that animation didnt use squash and stretch properly, all the kids around me were like, "No, thats what the video said to do! Were you not paying attention?" (We had watched the 12 principles of animation a day prior)
I love to animate I 2d, and I have been studying the laws of animation for three years, and Smear Frames, when done correctly makes everything look a lot better.
Wasn't really expecting this topic, but at least it's still a video. I dont really care about the topic because this guy always finds a way to make stuff entertaining anyway.
I feel what’s important is exactly how many frames a new animation is on Typically American animation is animated on 2s where a new drawing is done every other frame, this effects the Timing of the animation, which in turn effects the weight of the smear frame
Smear frames are the holy grail in animation. as silly as it sounds, it's true. Both me and my best friend are animators, and it's not very often either of us animates without any smear frames.
Essentially, smear frames exist to make quick movements look smoother. The more wide the movement, the longer the smear. Or for several sharp movements, you may only show the end points of the movements, causing characters to have multiple limbs.
Off topic but the RUclips frame by frame feature is so delightful, great for studying animated works or just looking for easter eggs. But knowing RUclips and their relationship with niche features there's a chance they're just gonna remove it for no fucking reason, just like with other good things from this site.
The snake shrugging thing was something I noticed and thought "Damn, that exceeds my expectations of expression." I'd love to animate I just don't think I'd be so concise about it lol
Smear frames are my favorite part of animating not because they're funny, because they make it a realistic and natural animation, but i know its also hard- from animating to motion blur to design etc.
Something you didn’t mention: the 24 drawings do not have to be unique, animators often hold drawings for multiple frames, it’s how they’re able to achieve effects like slow in slow out

Smear Frams is normal in the animations and there is this kind of movement there in the animations because for example if one takes me in photograph at the same time to move very quickly and well that makes the same effect and when the characters make that It is because they move quickly!
I understand if it's for 3D or tweened animation but how does one look at a traditional animation smear frame and be like "wow the animator must've slipped off their chair while drawing this frame and made a mess of color and body parts that just happen to be a perfect representation of the motion between two poses, happy little accidents!"

Hello Tomee my name is Lucas and i animator and can say why is than Smear Frames in animations. Because all animations are made frame by frame and doing with technical just to like smooth sometimes (can be just 1 frame) is picture weird and is because just have in mind arm. You take arm up and down and if you want make in animation arm you need make it smooth so its 500 frames for 1 second in bad situalion. And in animation is just 1. 1! frame where is weird segment because is frame inside smooth animation. So if i write it in cube: Smear Frames are 0,0001 second frames (Just 1 frame) where is weird but is make because than frame is in smooth animation. For example: I have smooth animation with 10 frames. If i used smooth effect i can make in 5 frame something weird but it weird make than animation smooth.
Actually, anticipation is an action that prepares for something so the viewer can know what to do next, if u dont add anticipation, the power of the next action looks unrealistic and comes from nowhere.
