    As the bike is wider at the front end do you find it hard to keep the wheels on the clean and dry lines left by car tyres? Not a loaded question btw I think the thing is a really cool innovation personally.

    • @chrisredfield3240
      @chrisredfield3240 5 лет назад

      One wheel will be in the crap stuff probably the rear wheel to get less grip and probably get a puncture may just be able too keep one front wheel in the good bit of road.

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  5 лет назад

      Not found it a problem, though might be a different story in snow - you’re right, straddle the clear path for the rear wheel and both front could be out of it. Though they are pretty narrow.
      You do notice when filtering on motorways as you’re not just to one side of the line - one wheel is more likely to rumble over the lines.

      Saying ‘end of story’ does not mean an argument is complete. By the powered vehicle definition of trike or tricycle, this is neither. It’s a three-wheeled vehicle that’s classed as - and rides exactly as - a two-wheeled motorcycle. That’s the end of the facts, but no doubt not the end of the discussion.

      Not sure where you live. Timaru Yamaha has a demo which I took out on Monday. They also sold one a couple of weeks ago so they are definitely out the. My take. My regular commute if a K1600. So I normally ride a bike 40kgs heavier, with 6 cylinders rather than 3, with 1650cc rather than 850. I commute all year round, so often -3C or colder. I am concerned about front end grip. South Canterbury has some of the clearest skies in the country, lots of frosts followed by cloudless blue skies. I rate the Niken. It is a true motorcycle, not just front to was good, it was how well behaved it was on bumpy corners. It felt sluggish, slow, safe, stable, rough (vibrating) compared to the K16. But the entry level price is half, is a good quality brand from Japan. I'd like for my 900ks a week commute, heated grips and seat, bigger screen, lower placement of the mirrors (my hands reflect back blocking part of the view). It topped out at about 200, getting slow after 160, so well down on the K16, but half the engine half the price. This may replace my K16 in a few years. Good bike great all season rider.

    I dont ride all year round because in the winter months I’m just too worried about losing control on mud or black ice. This bike may help extend the riding season but its quite expensive. The range as well. 46 mpg hmm. It’s a lovely design but it might end up falling by the wayside because it seems to just do ok on most things. I dont think there is anything wrong with having 3 wheels. Great set of reviews by the way. Do you think that they missed a trick by not pushing the front wheels further apart and making it a bike that car licence holders could use? This may have been the first ‘cool’ bike that they could own.

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  5 лет назад +2

      A good question! I guess that pushing the wheels further apart could have compromised handling, but I do know that Yamaha says there was no way they wanted this thing to be useable on a car licence. As it is just the same to ride and handle as it'd be with two wheels, letting inexperienced users out on it would be dangerous.

    I still don't understand why this is worth 50% more than an MT-09, other than wanting to have that "hey look at this" quality---a prudent rider would be just as safe no matter the conditions on either bike, and given the weight disparity---the 2 wheeled Yamaha must be easier and more fun to ride.

    • @BobJones20001
      @BobJones20001 5 лет назад +1

      Try it. Invert your statement. If your current ride had only 60% of its normal grip would it be as safe? It rides just like a normal bike but definitely has a safer from end. I found my K1600 would do chicanes much better, but the Niken pitches into corners like any other bike. The extra weight is high while the K16 it's very low, probably why it doesn't flop back and forth quickly compared to the K16. If your only a weekend warrior then perhaps the image is impacted, if your a daily rider or long distance type then I expect the Niken may tick some boxes

    I would definitely like to own one. If not for the extra fun when leaning into corners, then for the extra fun of freaking out other bikers when stopping for a coffee break 😄 If you say it is more forgiving, then I would NOT advise new bikers to buy this as their first bike.... I think it could teach them "bad habits" that might be dangerous when they switch to 'classic' bike...

    Brilliant bike
    Am seriously thinking of the GT version to replace my BMW just because things like this don't come along too often.
    But...and it's a big but, there are only 14 Niken dealers in the UK and the nearest one to me is best part of 100miles away
    That's not especially convenient and will end up making these machines niche because of the (relative) difficulty of servicing and warranty claims.
    And that would be a real shame.
    14 is nowhere near enough - it needs to be something like 30+ dealers in fact given the technology in use is innovative in execution but actually nothing special then Yamaha, you could have shot yourself in the foot on this one.

      @@alexgian9313 nope. It's sorely my opinion based on an upright, three wheeled conventional bike. As one would label a conventional 3 wheeled bicycle one with Training wheels, I logically see a three wheeled, conventional motorcycle a trike. Unlike something such as a Harley Trike or Can-Am Spyder, the Niken is a Motorcycle with training wheels. As the Spyder was marketed towards those new and apprehensive riders, the Yamaha Niken has been received by the public in the same manner. (contrary to your opinion and Yamaha's marketing). Every company that releases a three wheeled unconventional bike now will market the ride as a Motorcycle. The feedback Bombardier received regarding the Spyder was the basis for future marketing strategies.

      Glad you're okay, but you lost the back on something. As another person has commented on there, you'd likely have been off had that been a two-wheeler. There has to be a reason for any tyre to lose traction. I've done just under 4,000 miles on one now, and lost the back once on stone-cold tyres in the wet. Other people I know who've ridden them have lost the back too, but always for a reason.

  • @MrPoopnoddy
    @MrPoopnoddy 5 лет назад

    How on Earth do you work out that the contact patch(es) is 80% bigger? The two spin balloons are sharing the load, therefore they have a much smaller contact patch per wheel than a traditional bike. If you have are 800lbs all-up and have 40 psi in your tyres, then you have 20sq in of contact patch in total. Doesn't matter how many wheels you have; a 10 wheel "bike" would still have 20sq in of contact, but it would be down to 2 sq in per rim. And not only that, but [technically] it can't actually offer "more grip" than a single front wheel. Friction is the same when pushing the same load - to push your car sideways on the road takes 10,000N of force, say. Doesn't matter if it's a three wheeled car or an 8 wheeled car. Whatever this bike offers, it's not - strictly speaking - a grip advantage by offering larger contact patches. It may well be doing something else, but Yamaha haven't re-written any physics with the Niken.

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  5 лет назад

      The contact patch is increased not due to the extra wheel alone, but because the extra weight over the front allows the second wheel to take advantage of the increased contact, and spead it between the two, rather than have one wider tyre that can have a larger contact patch due to the increased weight.

    • @MrPoopnoddy
      @MrPoopnoddy 5 лет назад

      @@bennettsbikesocial And just how much extra weight is over the front end? In the very video you're comparing its total weight against other bikes and it's very competitive. If the weight distribution is heavily biased to the front to force extra weight over the front, then you're going to get sloppy handling and the risk of under-steer. And the other argument against the extra traction that is proposed is that the increased contact area has less penetration into the road surface, giving less grip. A single contact patch will, by necessity, conform to the irregular road surface better than a shared pair that would more likely glide over the surface. In other words, the more pressure on the contact patch, the more the rubber will conform around the little stones etc and grip better. What you're describing will not conform as well and is almost bound to slide more.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a pop at you - per se - but something is definitely amiss here; I design brakes for a living and have a fair old bit of knowledge concerning tribology, friction and attrition. And an 80% contact patch increase is impossible unless you run either square tyres or seriously under-pressure. Even if you achieve said contact patch, then the pressure exerted onto the road is massively reduced, making each wheel much more ready to slide. I'm also not saying that this bike isn't inherently more stable (indeed it may well be) but I am saying that it's not a contact-patch thing. It's geometry and off-axis load bearing thing that will allow a little slide to warn of impending doom that you don't get on a two wheeled bike (well, you do but it's a short-lived affair).
      Can one of these bikes pull >1g in cornering? I'd wager not. A well-sorted two wheeler can...

  • @ir8d8rads
    @ir8d8rads 5 лет назад

    So what is this bike really for? Does it do anything "better" than a standard configuration? I mean I like innovation... But why? Is there really XX% more grip that you can use when cornering or is that just basic theory of having more tire contact? It seems that Yamaha didn't make this an extreme performance example but rather a design-proving concept they approved for production in hopes that gadget-minded riders would opt for the "neato factor". If this were an all-out performance design would it be capable of enough amazing things to justify all the extra parts? Or is it just an exercise... The riding community pretty much agrees that adding another wheel does not elevate status. Otherwise we might all be riding some version of a Slingshot? Or would we? Since it is generally assumed that adding more corners is some sort of risk mitigation and therefore less edge. Where is the extra thrill?

    It might be a road, but you are pushing it a bit given the cocky has obviously just driven his bloody muddy tractor and trailer over it, you'd think more than once, and maybe all week. ...edit, and what do you mean 'can add stability ...'? ...man, it just does, all the time. It's just hard to believe there is something so much better than two wheels, notwithstanding power-stands and added weight (and windage).
