Though a man of few words, Gordons face conveys everything he has to say.
Like his passion for killing zombies?
he reminds me of myself
Cringe
Yah have to thank the animator for that but you can just see confusing joy more confusing the Will to say something and then he rethinks about has happened to him
He looks like he will kill Alyx and hide the corpse.
Gordon's face looks like he's forgotten what being around people in a normal situation feels like and a dim light woke back up in his eyes.
You got the point of the video! Congrats
@@43waler thanks! I appreciate the comment!
ever since the incident at black mesa its been killing, getting shot at, survival and fear
that single hug was probably the only, brief moment of humanity and affection hes had in a very long time.

Yeah, he probably got PTSD from killing not only interdimensional aliens but humans as well.
@@Faruq-xn4gj And watching his fellow scientists die
The amount of shock physical emotional and psychological damage is most definitely got to be there considering he was just going to work and then the next day he's humanity savior didn't even ask for it people expect so much of him and the only bit of rest he's ever had is either being knocked out shoved into a garbage compactor or
Put into stasis in the middle of a void
Yeah he's been through some tough s***
Not even just the mesa incident, even with the realization that his entire race was enslaved is enough to make one man break, and yet he didn't, not completely.
Ya I mean I would that stuff would screw me up pretty good
I just realized Gordon hasn't got a single moment of sleep throughout the entire franchise except when he got knocked out and thrown in a garbage compactor to die, to him its all just been one continuous chain of events
g mans "visits" involve rest, as the g man himself states: "Rise and shine Mr. freeman, Rise and shine." as the first bit of dialog in hl2. he also says "not to imply you have ben sleeping on the job" in the same section. directly stating that Mr. freeman gets sleep. its just uncommon and he can go for days with out sleep, as hl2 you stay up for 2 days and the episodes I think take one day each with ep2 having a short nap in the beginning im unsure about hl1 though, as i have never played it, however, I'm assuming that it is also 2 days
@@lennybjorowitz4256 it's somewhere around two to three days. And yeah, I'd imagine G-Man let Gordon at the very least regenerate while in stasis.
POV: uni student before finals
HEV Suit probably makes him awake but man that must be tough. Imagine fighting for your life for an entire week with no food, water or at least 1 hour of sleep knowing everyone you knew (family, friends) are dead because it passed 20 years but for you, it was only 1 second. Gordon's mind must be fucked up.
You can allow him to sleep if you leave him in a safe room, be nice to gordon ;(
Really sad once you realize Gordon probably experienced more in the "week" that he's technically been through than his entire life combined.

Suddenly, the title ‘Half Life’ sounds a little more heavy than before.
"What a week, huh?"

Poor Gordon needs more hugs, when humanity finally ends the combine connection and the end of the combine remnants, he needs all the members of the resistance to hug him.

Couldn’t have said it better. Amen

Everyone should hug him absolutely. He needs all the support he can get after the crap he's been through. Hugs from everyone. Amen to that.
After gordon went through alien fetus and army shit, he needs some hugs. 🤗🤗🤗
To be fair, it's only been five days since the incident from Gordon's perspective.
9 days if half life 2 and the episodes count
From gordons POV its only been 8 days but in hl2 its been a week before the revolution started
Honestly? Probably the most stressful week of his entire life. Sometimes it feels longer than it actually was.
DUDE WAS AWAKE FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK, NEVER WENT TO THE BATHROOM, ATE, OR DRANK AND CONSTANTLY FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE.

True. I haven't had a hug from someone who isn't family in 5 months but I honestly live for those whenever it happens
I think it has been 4 years since I hugged my 8th grade crush goodbye. We were going to go to high school together but she moved with her family to a military base somewhere. Since the pandemic I haven’t seen or heard from them. I just turned 18 and I don’t even know what I’m doing with my life, I’m still fixated on this random interaction with a girl almost half a decade later (gross I know).
Seeing the way Gordon reacts to the hug helps me to imagine what I would do if she somehow came back

i love the little 'breath' gordon takes as soon as it cuts to him. it really seems like that hug knocked the wind out of him in more ways than one.
Damn dude didn’t notice that till you pointed that out
Such a good animation, I never would have that to add it but it makes it 100x more realistic and heartbreaking
its interesting how suddenly everyone has stopped painting Gordon as a badass scientist monster killer and instead as just a guy who was forced into a poor position through no fault of his own, haunted by ptsd from the actions he has witnessed and been forced to commit (ie, a guy who really really just needs a hug). it actually seems really interesting to make his character out to be this, because it really adds a layer of emotion and attachment that wasn't really there before. thank you internet, very cool
Well Gordon is supposed to be the player themselves, hence why he's completely just a husk for us to put ourselves into.
It's a mix of maturity and people being more accepting of traumas that people face
@@midnightdragon67 yeah I feel that at least for me I was introduced to Half Life as a kid and now nearing my 30s I feel that Gordon really needs a fucking hug and a holiday after all his trauma.
A badass? In my book, he was a psychopath running around from place to place and killing everything that looked alive to him with his crowbar without any regard for his own personal safety and wellbeing
Well to be fair Gordon being badass was always attributed more to the sheer amount of stuff he lived through, ultimate survivor in a HEV suit - even HECU units start to be amazed.
And Gordon still gets captured, still gets beaten down or used... It always was the point is that he somehow drags himself out of death traps (and why he got recruited by G-man).
I mean look at official art - it always depicted him in three ways:
- Battered but focused
- Being caught by suprise and attacked (for example famous art of him being strangled by an alien tentacle)
- And... Tired. So tired but still going.
Gordon always was Badass for surviving all that happened to him... But he also always was a man having a VERY bad week where he had no moment to rest, no moment to unwind - such a tired physically and mentally man.
It’s like something truely human woke up inside him. For a split second he felt snapped out of the constant stress, damage and weight of combatting so many different enemies and horrors beyond his imagination, seeing so many of his buddies die and seeing humanity be forced into essentially a slave population. I never took into account how emotionally broken and split he must be considering if Gordon could talk he would likely be entirely detached from others.
I like this video a lot, glad to see someone put face to Gordon’s first hug in like years
it's more than likely that the brevity of the events of the half life games (from gordon's perspective) allowed him to not really think too hard about what's he's been through
@@platypipope328 Yeah, he never truly had a grace period
If Gordon ever sees Earth come back from the depths, he better be given a hug from every resistance member his side of the planet
The true mark of an animator's talent is their ability to churn out grade-A meme material, but then turn on a dime and create an emotionally charged scene lasting less than 15 seconds.

He doesn't know what a hug is anymore
People always joke about Gordon being a total badass but no one thinks about it from his perspective. Put yourself in his shoes for a bit. You just got a brand new job as a top scientist in high security facility. You expect your first day to go fairly well if your superiors wouldn't mind you being a bit late. And then, less than an hour later the very fabric of reality starts to tear and you're caught in the middle of an alien invasion. You're then forced to fight your way out until you can get to the military but as soon as you get to them you see them gunning down scientists. You're now stuck between a rock and a piece of vibranium. You have to fight against highly trained marines, aliens, and assasins. You finally made it through hell, you think you're safe, but then, you get shoved into cryostasis and then wake up to see the world has gone to hell. All that struggle, all that pain, all that suffering, was for *nothing.*
Freeman's Mind.
he's a scientist that was put through hell due to a portal to another dimension opening he had to fight through hordes of aliens and the military he had to adapt he had to get skilled at fighting he is a one man army with severe ptsd
I def don’t think it’s his first day on the job. Most guards and scientist at the anomalous materials sector seem to already know Gordon somewhat if not on a personal level. Which tbh makes it even worse for Gordon since most of them die
@@applebees563 I have no clue why everyone says that it's his first day on the job when literally everyone greets him like a colleague, the scientists even mention how reliable gordon is and treats him like their friend

He hasn't been touched by anyone who hasn't wanted to kill him for years. He probably needed that hug
In my opinion, I'm not really a fan of Gordon being this kind just for the player to insert themselves in. I really like the characterisation of Gordon as this unfortunate man who's been shoved into this mess and now has to deal with that. These videos honestly gave me that thought.
Freeman's Mind had the best characterization of Gordon. Just a normal, codeine-addicted scientist who was late to work and may or may not be slowly losing his mind as he battles his way through the invasion.
As for Chell?

I can tell it’s a meme… but it’s a meme that suits Gordon so well, we all depict him as this stoic sci-fi badass alien killing machine who is so cool that he doesn’t need to speak a word to be awesome… when in actual reality he’s a survivor of the most traumatic experience from seeing his own coworkers die and transform into zombies, to the unfathomable horrors from other dimensions.
The things he’s seen and had to do just to survive, is undesirable to express in mere words. The man is scarred for life to the point I don’t think it’s even possible for him to have a normal life anymore.

@@santini1224434 bro got sent to nova prospekt cause he had a mental skill issue
Gordon's experience is even more heartbreaking when you realise that Freeman is only 27 years old through the entirety of Half Life. The man experienced literal Hell having to fight aliens, undead zombies and the military escaping Black Mesa on his first day of work after Grad School, being kidnapped and frozen in time for 20 years by a god-like being, and then waking up to witness planet Earth having fallen under the total control of a tyrannical alien occupation where his friends, family and everyone he knew and loved in life is more than likely dead - all before he was 30.
We have to remember that for Gordon, the entire story of Half Life happens to him in the span of less than a WEEK. The sheer physical and psychological stresses from these experiences would cause even the strongest-willed person in the world to suffer the most catastrophically traumatic breakdown possible. It is nothing less than a fucking act of God that Gordon has the fortitude to not only survive such ordeals, but keep pressing on and lead the fight against the Combine on behalf of all humanity.

Wow, No One has cared about Gordon enough to hug him up until this point. This man has gone through hell itself and is probably still processing everything, he has talked to no one. Immediately after 1, he was frozen and tossed back into the fray again, stopping this alien threat. Constantly putting his life on the line, seeing people die.
The man deserves a hug
@@justrenderin1279 no, he doesn’t DESERVE a hug.
He’s fucking EARNED ALL THE HUGS. All of mankind.
Gordon has got to have the most PTSD out there, all his coworkers died, some we turned into zombies, he watched many get kill in front of him, he killed hundreds, and he comes back to earth to see that black mesa destroyed and that the lambda team's plan failed, and that there's now an inter-dimensional dictatorship that has ravaged the earth and killed billions. All while being, as that one youtuber put it, "just some guy who was on his way to work".
I first played the Orange Box 14 years ago.
I remember after the Train crash and you’ve freed Alyx from a screaming Stalker.
She takes a moment to breathe, calm and collect herself.
I vividly remember wishing I, as Gordon, could hug her to comfort her.
Such amazing game, character & story design that you want to empathise and engage with the world.
And this sets up personal motivation to save Alyx after the Hunter attack.
When I saw Alyx get impaled by that Hunter (despite being spoiled to it 1000x times) I just kept playing the game, no matter if I got stuck at one area.
I want a hug from her
Geez. I think Gordon needs more hugs. That was the face of a man starved of affection.
Not gonna lie getting hugged is probably what kept gordon going through the episodes
I can see Gordon's version of that one scene of the simpsons, "do it for her"
Gordon was the quiet kid of his school, problably never had a girlfriend for he was either too busy with his studies or wasn't very popular or socially skilled. The right hug in a wrong place can make all the difference in the world.. he problably wasn't expecting that and no amount of meth can help calculate the levels of dopamine he might had felt. Imagine If the H.E.V suit just went "Dopamine administered".

Gordon lost his coworkers, friends, family, wife, kid, home, even himself for a bit. Gordon lost literally everything in the span of a week, and he kept powering through anyway, he needs and deserves countless hugs.
Think about it, in the first Half Life, he got a picture of a baby in his locker, so either it's just a random asset that the developers added to add some sort of realism, or maybe it is part of the lore, where Gordon actually has a child. He is just a simple and normal man, it's what dr Breene said at the prison stage. Which adds even more curiosity, what happened to his relatives, his wife, his child, where are they, what happened to them. Which makes the entire storyline look sad, like before it was depressing, but the realisation of you, having no one, parenting to you, or even having the identical consanguinity, just makes you feel alone. Just 30 minutes of you being late can change your life and your entire perspective on the world.

Gordon: "Hey Alyx, do you like Huey Lewis and the News?"
Many are saying it's not so bad because he was in stasis for decades. But we need to face reality, our boy was living in an underground Dorm out in the middle of the desert with a bunch of Magnussons and Kliners for roommates. It wasn't exactly the most touchy-feely environment so it's safe to say it has been quite a while since he's been involved in any sort of contact human more intimate or meaningful than a handshake.
Well if you look at the beginning of HL1, he was pretty new to Black Mesa. I don't think he was there for too long before shit hit the fan. Its probably been at least 25+ years since he last hugged someone, given that HL1 is set sometime after 1997, but probably not long after 9/11, and HL2 is set around 20 or so years after the Black Mesa Incident, putting it on or around 2020-2025 (modern day world,, most likely).
However, in Gordon's mind, since he was in stasis for so long, and the BMI only lasted a few hours (or a day at most), and the events of HL2 are spread out over a fairly short time (maybe a couple weeks), he probably hasn't been hugged in a month or so

To be honest, through all the shit he’s been through, a hug is one of the most unexpected and kind things he could get after what feels like the most nightmarish week.
*After the hug*
Gordon think: "I need a vacation... "
Love your videos man! Keep it up! ~
WHICH I'D HAVE RIGHT NOW IF THAT CIA SPOOK HADN'T SCREWED ME!!
Well, you've watched the world crumble before you as a result of your own actions, all efforts made to save it have been for naught, the friend you used to have that was two years younger than you is now pushing fifty, your family and the rest of your friends are probably dead
but a hug is still appreciated
every time i rewatch this and see the heart and soul poured into this expression my heart sinks into my stomach and i get a weird kind of reality check
First time Gordon felt anything but the rush of fear in years.
every scientist said OH MY GOD WERE DOOMED
but nobody said how he was
Gordon deserves the hug
Being a guy is thinking Gordon is a badass scientist who can take on anything. Being a man is realizing Gordon has done enough fighting and gone through enough events to be under constant stress and mentally scarred. He deserves that hug 100% and probably a nice warm shower after being in that HEV suit for about a week since Black Mesa.
Honestly at this point, he genuinely needs therapy after what Black Mesa put him though, I'm surprised he hasn't gone batshit insane.

_Gordon Freeman:_ *"I've had better hugs from a HeadCrab"*
You know my godfather looks very much like Gordon. It's almost like they're the same person also he wears the same kind of glasses as Gordon. While he's Finnish unlike Gordon isn't, Gordon's almost like a Finnish person. He never talks and doesn't complain.
I once, when I was little, showed my godfather the cover of the Orange Box and I told him it's almost uncanny how similar they look. He couldn't believe his eyes and just laughed at the whole deal.
While I haven't been through the level of shit Gordon has, the way he slowly turns his head and slightly opens his mouth and the blank stare in his eyes, I can relate to it
Gordon Doesnt Need To Be Hugged, He's A Highly Trained Professional
The first that happened I had the same reaction
Thank you so much for including a link to the music!

Good man
As someone who was hugged by a stranger for the first time in over 20 years, I felt the same way.
I finally beat half life and on episode one as of writing this! Seeing this pov after I did that section made my night
Yay isn't it a great game
@@zarrowthehorse It is! definetly ahead of its time in the early 2000s. I played half life Alyx when it first came out and immediately downloaded black mesa and recently when valve when on sale got the half life 2 series. Loving it so far!
