Great reaction. You have no idea who Ren is nor what he is fully capable of yet, and I love that. Try the “Hunger” next for some sick throwback 90’s era hip hop. It's a flex for him to share that he can do whatever he wants. There is no box to place Ren in. Welcome to the rabbit hole
It’s a lapel mike, and the guitar’s plugged in under his jacket. He says he masters every bit of the sound to make sure it doesn’t fade in and out when he’s moving his head, etc.
Ren is a beast on the acoustic and electric guitar. He plays bass, piano and drums too. Check out his band called The Big Push. Ren"s versatility is unmatched. Screech kills Jenny--The police kill Screech---then Ren rewinds time from 2019 to 2005 to tell Violets tale--Violet is killed by Stevie after giving birth to her twins who turn out to be Jenny & Screech who were obviously raised separately and Screech didn’t know he was robbing and killing his twin sister Jenny.
Night could come as early as 4:30 during the winter months . At 14 I often came home late after babysitting , tried wearing my mom’s “heeled” boots and spent a lot of time at the make up counter of department stores.
Doing things in one take is kind of his thing, and he does it impressively well. Ren bends and blends genres, chameleon-like. Highly recommended: Chalk Outlines (live version, with Chinchilla) Earned It/Man's World/Falling (busking with Sam Tompkins) I Shot The Sheriff (live, busking with his band The Big Push The Hunger (a rap video) Sick Boi (rap/drama video)
There's also a video of Ren doing his own cover of "Breezeblocks" by the band Alt J, and it's freaking amazing. I like Ren's version better than the original
You have to hear his other stuff, he sings ballad style with another super talented artist called Chinchilla in a song called Chalk Outlines live and he raps like a beast on things like the Hunger, Power, Genesis and Losing It. This trilogy and Hi Ren are the pretty unique ones in his catalog of stuff. Then watch his busking in the street with his band The Big Push, they cover from Bob Marley to Black Sabbath to Ray Charles. A really fun one they did on a rooftop, also in one take, was a cover of Manu Chao’s “Bongo Bong”, check that one out.
The guitars have internal contact (piezoelectrical) microphones that don't take up any external sound, and as you said, he has a directional lapel microphone for the singing.
Subscribed since you geeked out about how they recorded this. I never get over the audio quality on these live recordings they've done. Not to mention choreographing the whole thing like a dance. Violet's Tale really steps things up a notch with everything.
Hi Ren has over 7 million views in 2 months, I think the world is listening! Yes it is a live one take! If you want to hear another side of him I suggest Genesis or The Hunger
I think you’d love his song Hi Ren. This should definitely be your next reaction. It’s a total masterpiece. He has songs like Chalk Outlines and What You Want that have more commercial appeal. He covers so many genres. This is a rabbit hole you want to fall down.
In my opinion he has many different potential paths for success. He has more mainstream type of "songs" and he has stuff like this and Hi Ren which is more concept and story telling. That type of song storytelling is incredibly popular in theater. Hamilton has proven that you can still do it. This is basically a 12 minute tragedy, that had he seen it played this way, would have made Shakespeare wish he had written it. I would sit down to watch a 90 min show ren performing several of these types of songs compiled into a 1 man show.
Ren has a band called "The Big Push" and they have live videos on their RUclips page where they play street shows in Britain. They do amazing, and I mean amazing covers of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" and Ren's voice sounds so much like Bob Marley's. They do an incredible cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." They cover The Rolling Stones "Paint It Black" with Ren playing bass and it too is incredible.
I haven't watched the reaction yet...but you're my favorite reactor watching one of my favorite performances by Ren... I'm so excited!!! Sorry so late. Love both of you!!!
Oh man there's so many great choices you could put his entire category in a bag and pull a track out blindly and not be disappointed... I mean that 100% Not all of them are perfect or the same as hi Ren and the trilogy... but they all are special and artistic/creative ...he is with out an artistic prodigy
There are no words to describe this! I never thought I’d ever say I’d listen to an entire album of solely guitar playing but wow, I LOVE his guitar playing. I’m blown away with the theatrics, the story telling, his voice, etc
All these songs were done as a one take, live performance, with a collar mic and a camera, that's it. Nothing complicated, just pure talent and perfect locations each time for it ❤️
the guitar has a pick up in it and he has a lapel mic clipped to his lapel , same set up as Hi Ren . His guitar is strung with metal strings and on Hi Ren he is using nylon strings . Both his guitar and his voice are plugged into a transmitter on his lower back .
Every song of Ren's just gets better with each listen. Never quite had that happen with music before. I love the live street performance of I Shot the Sheriff Road to Zion Hip hop with The Big Push. But its all 🔥
It's like a Shakespearean tragedy it's draws you in to the story and keeps you absorb in the tale and pulls on your emotions , Really enjoyed your reaction
Regulate- Warren G and possibly Nate Dogg. Haven't listened to that in years. Great reaction to this beyond incredible performance. Definitely do more Ren, he is the single most versatile musicians I've ever heard. His acting is exceptional to ice the cake.
He's wearing a Lavaliere mic on his collar, and a wireless guitar connection (you can kinda see it on his back in some shots). I'm pretty sure all the sound capture was solely from those two sources.
I'm so happy you're covering Ren~!! Ren wears a lapel mic,and has his guitar plugged in under his clothes. Recorded live,,all in one take. He's pure talent~!!
Great reaction. So Iv'e seen a couple guitar techy-type channels reactions to this and they all say there's a mic wired into the pickup in the sound box of Ren's guitar that gives it that great sound. Ren is also mic'ed up and there's a boom mic out of frame. That's how it sounds so well produced.
I must’ve watched this on your other channel, but I’ll watch it again on here. Please will you react to “How to be Me (live)” and “Chalk Outlines (live)”? Both great tracks. I’m sure you’ll love them 😊
Ren can do pretty much any Genre out there don't worry! But he's finding what he's doing at the moment the most rewarding he's dropping a new track in a couple of weeks I'm interested what it will be this time! Great reaction bruv💯🇬🇧
Thank you for "t'was the end of Screech", it really put a smile on my face. Also, don't apologise, I love how the question of how it was being recorded really bugged you, I get hung up on these things too.
From having done shoots like this: Usually a lav mic to pick up the voice clearly but only at super short range - enough to get the voice and the guitar. The guitar and lav are plugged into a wireless transmitter on his belt. The camera likely has a very high end mic and/or he has a sound person with them using a high end shotgun mic on a pole mount he carries. In the end, you take the good audio for voice from the shotgun mic and/or camera, the output from the guitar, and match sync them to the lav mic which is attached to the video for timing. That way all audio channels sync with the video.
Oh, he has other music, too. I would recommend Sick Boi next. Check out The Hunger, he can rap rap, too. Chalk Outlines with Cincilla is great, too, the live version. I also like Losing It, and then also check out some of his stuff from when he was with the band The Big Push. I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop is a good one.
A couple of fantastic tracks are Diazapam, Dear God, and Dominoes. For seeing Ren duet with other artists ‘Blind eyed’ or ‘How to be me’ are both brilliant.
You are thinking about, "Regulators". However, there are a lof of his melotic/rhythmic phrasing that is derived from folk music. In particular Irish folk music.
Great fun watching your reaction. I’ve seen it 25x but this is the first time I realized Screech’s tale “starts right at the end” and “ends right at the start “. In your words, he’s so dope!!

Ren has a HUGE range. He raps, sings, narrates....you gotta listen to "The Hunger", "Chalk Outlines", and "What You Want". He even does reggae really well.
Not as niche as you'd think. Check out the rest of his music if you get a chance. You've only scratched the surface with the 2 songs (technically 4 with the trilogy) you've listened to. Pick a genre and Ren has already conquered it. You have no idea yet LOL 😉 Great reaction, luv. Thank you! 🥰🙏❤
Just remember the KEY, the story starts where it ends is the clue. great reaction. and for the record, there is lot of REN to go down the Ren Rabbit hole, a very wide array of talents and styles, he can rap, rock, beatbox, sing, tell stories, act, his passion for music comes out of his pours, he's authentic and very creative. so enjoy the REN journey. it's supper amazing, one recommendation if you see this, The Big Push - I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop this will give you an small example of Rens talent.
Ren knows no genre boundaries. He is an elite, top shelf rapper. Ren can rap, rap. The Hunger is the Frankenstein (monster) Ren made to flex all of the tools that he has at his disposal to conquer the music world. The Hunger is Ren"s golden ticket. The flow changes are insane. The rhyme schemes are very complex. Ren also has an amazing singing voice. He has several powerful duets. (Rec x Chinchilla) Penitence is an extremely well written song. Ren incorporates complex rhyme schemes and flow changes into a more normal song. The song is very deep and I love the ending segment. Ren's artistic creativity and lyrical genius are on full display.
Loved you geeking out about the audio, but I'm not sure that to caught that Violet is the mother of Jenny and Screech. Separated since childhood only to reunite on the fateful day that Screech unknowingly murders his twin sister, then dies himself the next street over.
First time a see someone react to this one before reacting to Hi ren :) You should definitly check Hi Ren next and also as some other recommended try Hunger for some very sick rapping
He's quickly gaining GOAT Status! His Rapping lyrical genious isn't even a question! Multi Instruments under his belt! Storytelling off the charts! Poetry even... spoken word genious! His beats and mixing... Off the Charts! The videography set up perfectly with what he wants to say! One Shot videos, recorded live... wow!!!
I think it may be DI Guitar to a Radio connection a separate radio connection to Lavalier Microphone clipped to his collar. Perhaps a couple of Ambient mics, a boom and a Shotgun microphone on the camera. All taken to a Battery Powered Zoom R24 (or even a Zoom R16) that keeps all channels separate. My reason for saying the shotgun microphone is that I think the Reverb may just be natural, and settings chosen for their reverb, which is old school and mind blowing think of the Abbey road reverb which is recorded from amplifiers in a room. This is most obvious in Act 3 where the camera points up the stairwell and the reverb changes plus the two electret mics on the Zoom for stereo pair to use as reference. Having a Zoom R24 means mobile live recording of up to 24 channels or the ability to record on 8 and mix down to others or dump all the sounds to your DAW of choice. The super lightweight zoom R24 is perfect for this, you even have EQ, Multi Band Compression and gating on the recording channels.
This Ren is on another level! Also he loves 1 takers! And Good ear about the Spanish style guitar, so many folks first were saying great classical but I'm native from the rez till I met my Hispanic immigrant father aged 8, and I know me some Spanish fingering!
That might be it time in Grenada or somewhere similar I also got that feeling the first time I listened and still he has like this Spanish feel in the guitar music he plays even though he's British.
Ren has a uniquely diverse ability to reach fans of multiple genres. I know you're a hip hop head, and there are definitely a few to check out. Genesis and The Hunger are worth checking out, in my opinion anyway. As other people have mentioned, his work with others is great too. The Big Push have original music as well as some fantastic cover performances. Thanks for doing what you do, have a great day.
Like Ren said in Hi Ren, he does not concern himself with commercial success. That said, Hi Ren is now at over 7 million vies in 3 months, so people HAVE taken notice. Also, all 3 Takes are indeed live one-take videos, as was Hi Ren.
Violet died giving birth to Jenny and screech. They were separated at birth. Jenny was quiet like her mother Violet, screech had violent nature like his father. They didn’t know about each other when screech robbed and killed Jenny
On a reaction video yesterday comments were discussing an interview about how The Big Push recorded busking and were referencing an interview or Instagram where Ren discussed what equipment they used and that they get rid of street noise they couldn’t avoid in post. He and the guitar are both miked directly, just like in HiRen. You’ve started, as most of us did, with these two most unique performance pieces, and you are right. They ain’t made for radio play. Either would be wonderful performed live at a festival like Edinburgh Fringe. Or simply shown on a screen at a small venue during a bigger festival like that. His camera guy Samuel Perry-Falvey has a website and all the usual social media and might be a source to answer your technical questions. He has radio playable stuff, covers and originals, songs and raps. You haven’t scratched the surface yet.
He has a pickup in the guitar, possibly a custom setup and has his guitar jacked into a recording device.. For vocals it is a lapel mic. I’m not sure how he cleans up the audio. There are recordings of the band he has been playing with The Big Push where it isn’t clear how they get such clean recordings while on the street. Interesting stuff.
He typically has a microphone pinned to his collar and a similar cord to plug into his guitar just hidden under his outfit. Pretty much EVERY Ren video on RUclips that shows him playing guitar and singing is all just live vocals and guitar playing. I really like how he has very few videos of studio edited music
I’ve never seen a guy that can sing, rap, and play the guitar all equally great. Not to mention his storytelling. A few centuries ago he would have been a legendary bard…

(Rec x Chinchilla)
Penitence is an extremely well written song.
Oh man
the geeking out about the audio was driving me crazy
First time a see someone react to this one before reacting to Hi ren :)
You should definitly check Hi Ren next and also as some other recommended try Hunger for some very sick rapping
pure talent...just wow....great reaction...thank you
He's quickly gaining GOAT Status! His Rapping lyrical genious isn't even a question! Multi Instruments under his belt! Storytelling off the charts! Poetry even... spoken word genious!
His beats and mixing... Off the Charts!
The videography set up perfectly with what he wants to say!
One Shot videos, recorded live... wow!!!
ROFL! Your ocd really cracks me up sometimes! ❤😂
Love you’re videos bro, keep it up🤩👍🏻
I love watching the dawning realization on people's faces after Violet's Tale closes and they hear the names.
"...definitely borrowing that entire scheme..." - Are you sure? But, I love your reactions.
I agree a couple of his songs are niche but he has such an extensive catalog of styles you can't pigeon hole him
I would like to see you be amazed at the Hunger next (only 2 mins odd) followed by Chalk Outlines
He absolutely has a huge catalog let's just go right through it 1 by 1
Loved the reaction thank you love ❤❤
The way he sang this song reminded me of that band called stray cats
Wonderful comment. I would love to see Ren with Brian Setzer from the Stray Cats.
The street sounds actually coming to play later actually worked really well with the song
I think you were thinking of a sublime song. They're from Long Beach California (LBC)
Yo dude, you're the best reactor on this site
More Ren, please, Sir.
Someone also said there’s a mic on the camera sometimes.?Outstanding talent!
Your the first reactor to think Sublime on Jenny’s version I’ve also thought it from first listen!
Please lets go down the Ren rabbit hole. One word. Genius.
he took cadence for Jenny's tale from Warren G feat Nate Dogg - Regulate
Ren will be fine. He’s got a whole forest of artistry and zero in on any one of them or all of them. He’s already a star in many people’s eyes.
Now let me blow your mind, he was in a band and they're superb!!!! Wade in the water cover is flawless!
ren is brill, good reaction man
Violet died giving birth to Jenny and screech. They were separated at birth. Jenny was quiet like her mother Violet, screech had violent nature like his father. They didn’t know about each other when screech robbed and killed Jenny
HAHAHHAHAHAHAH THE MIC SITUATION KILLED ME MAN. I’m wondering too
On a reaction video yesterday comments were discussing an interview about how The Big Push recorded busking and were referencing an interview or Instagram where Ren discussed what equipment they used and that they get rid of street noise they couldn’t avoid in post.
The song the end of Jenny's tale reminded you of was Regulators by Nate Dog and Warren G
Woah I know that alley in Brighton lol
