  • Home page: www.autorestomo... Rate, ask questions, we are very good about responding! Since we took it apart it only seems fair to put it back together again. This week we reassemble the Borg Warner T5 five-speed. Allan gives more tips on what to look for when assembling a T5 Borg Warner five-speed to use in your classic car or Fox body Mustang. We do a complete assembly of the transmission from case to main shaft assembly.

    Very helpful. I bought a used T5 WC from a '94 Mustang GT, and was able to rebuild it after watching these videos. I actually had the laptop near the workbench during assembly. I watched one step of assembly, paused the video, completed that step, and went to the next on the video. I went back and watched portions of the disassembly and assembly multiple times during the project. I'd never seen the inside of a transmission in my life, but I think the rebuild is a success.

    This was an excellent video set to show it is doable with enough information and the right rebuild kit. It gives those of use fearful of transmission rebuilds renewed hope. But what would be better? A CD/DVD of the hours long build -- sold somewhere, as that information and illustration is worth paying for. Unlike Minion.

    We were going to say yes to the T5 up until you said big block. Any time you get into more serious numbers start looking at a TK600 or T45. We'd check with Modern Driveline to see what they are doing in the Mopar arena. The guys over there are super sharp and if they can't help, they can get you to someone who can.

    Oddly Allan and Jeff were talking about that very thing; we are planning a shoot to add to what we have here that goes into all of it, from cluster gear to top cover. We will say (though the minion should not see this) that the Minion is who runs the jib crane and gets all the awesome shots. So we don't feel like we pay him enough. =)

    Sure, some of what we do here are skits, but most of the time there is no "acting"; things happen and we film it or the skit comes from actual events that we use to build a skit. We like to have fun and want to present that this hobby can BE fun while doing work on the cars.

As you slide the tailshaft housing on place the offset block above the ball and press down and slide the block over the shift rail while sliding the tailshaft housing on.

    Good video but two things. 1) I would never put a transmission together dry like you did. You never lubricated not even one part or bearing. 2) You never removed the counter shaft. Even if the end play was OK and the bearings felt OK those bearings could be bad and only show up under load. I would never take the chance of all that time and money rebuilding a transmission and not replace the counter shaft bearings. I know you said it was a lot of work to remove it but it would be more work to redo the job if they fail shortly after installing the transmission.

      @AutoRestoMod  10 лет назад

      Around 14:00 the music is not supposed to be there. We didn't discover it until after we had the video up. The music typically does not interfere with the talking points. We will at times bleed the music in under the voices, but usually (except at 14:00) if there is music, there is no talking.

    • @Giitzerland
      @Giitzerland 10 лет назад

      I didn't mean to sound picky, it's just that I'm trying to soak up every ounce of information I could get from this video since it's so incredibly informative, and the music was distracting. awesome work, I can't thank you enough :) I'm about to try rebuilding my 94' GT's T5, and it just hit the spot. thanks!

      @AutoRestoMod  10 лет назад

      Jeycihn No worries! Thanks for the input. We're happy that you are watching and hope that your transmission comes out great! We just wanted to explain that we don't usually put music under the important talking points. If there is music, we run it under places where we are "speeding along" things that take up time and no one is talking.

    Great video! I'm watching it over and over as I do my first rebuild. I bought the BK149WS rebuild kit for my 1990 Mustang's T5. The blocker rings have a black inner liner that makes the inner diameter too small for the cone liner to fit into. The old blocker rings that came out don't have that liner. Am I missing something? Do I force the cone in there?

    • @brucecouture9974
      @brucecouture9974 8 лет назад

      +Kelley D
      No you are not missing something, you have to use the 1/2 blocker rings as a set, Tremec has changed the angle of the cone in the last several years. You can not inner mix the parts.

    What sort of options are there for Dodge/Chrysler 5-speed conversions? I'm building a '69 Charger, and definitely want a 5-speed, but haven't had much luck finding a lot of info. Can you use a T5? if so, how much other work is involved? i currently have a t5 in my 95 camaro, i bought it and 1st gear seemingly didn't work, but sometimes i could get in in first gear perfectly fine. Then one day it got stuck in first gear and low and behold i had a broken shift fork. So, my question is do you think it was the syncro that went bad or could it have always been the shift fork and it finally went? An answer would be greatly appreciated.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  10 лет назад

      We'd recommend a TKO 600 and a Quicktime (RM-8010) bellhousing. According to some of the stuff we've seen, that is the best one for the 460. You also do not need to swap out the transmission input shaft for a shorter one like you do with other bell housings. Also, this is a low profile bell housing so there is no trimming needed for ground clearance. The older Quicktime housing did not have a cable end mount for cable clutches, but we have been told that the new ones do.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  10 лет назад

      johncartelli Honestly, that would be a question for Modern Driveline (208-453-9800) or a company like that. We only have minor experience with the Quicktime stuff, beyond that...we are not sure enough to even venture a guess.

    I don't know... I'm kind of really disappointed in this video... all he did was assemble a main shaft... you didn't show setting up the end play on the counter shaft replacing the bearing or the cup. Do you guys preload it or do you follow guidelines of a few thousand end play? I wanted to see if there's any difference in between this video vs other videos I've seen. I think the guy over at 5 speeds.com did a way better job. On the slider he'll find which position the sliders feel the best in deburr the gears add 1 2 thou of preload on the counter shaft so that way when the bearings seat you end up with the spec that's needed there's all kinds of tips and tricks. I thought you guys were all about hot rods/ restomods.

      LES LUMPKIN Not sure on that one. We'd say that you may need a bearing race and bearing from the Jeep line. We'd check the old against the new as well to determine if the case hole, main shaft diameter, and bearings are the same.

      +LES LUMPKIN When putting those in set it against race and slide it in instead of trying to press it down.

      AutoRestoMod Np. Its one of my newly aquired pieces of knowledge. I spent 15 minutes trying to press them then realized just slide it in and voila, its done :)
