I want to thank every for the wonderful heart felt comments. It really means so much to me. Like all videos a common question often comes up. One was "why did you throw out a cover that could be fixed by welding or plugging it?" If I am working on a job where the component could be easily sourced used or new I am not going to waste my time as well as the customer's money ( which they pay by the hour ) to give them a part that may be compromised by welding. These are very thin die cast covers and tend to warp when welded unless of course one uses proper preheat methods and bolts it to a case during the repair. I have bins of covers as well as new covers in stock because they do get dented and cracked often from people damaging them removing and installing the transmission. In this situation it was not worth the time to repair.
Great video! I bought a T5 conversion for my 1967 MGBGT, to the orginal engine (4 cylinder) from Dave at Fab-Tek. In the process of making another trans tunnel plate (it enters the cabin differently in the car, can't use the orginal) for the shifter wirh my son. I am also re-wiring the entire car and taking advantage of the engine out. Slow an steady progress.
out of curiosity would it have been a bad option to use tap to thread that hole and put a bolt in it cut down? that seems like a quick easy option to re-use the part but I have no damn idea what I'm talking about I'm literally just curious
Where are you located? Quick description of my issuse. I have a tko 600 engine built 331 ( 425 hp) Pulled out of the drive way ( driving at speed limit) grabbed 1st ,2nd when I shifted it to 3rd I heard a loud thump engine stalled. Re start engine but car won't move no leaks after thump. With car running shift to 1st car won't move an in and stalls engine. Shift to reverse I here a noise car don't move . Help .. thanks
Perfect timing! Sorry for all of your losses- I’m sitting in a hospital room awaiting my s/o’s liver transplant, with a non-W/C t-5 torn down at home on the bench (with a .63 overdrive gear!). Putting my waiting time to good use! Thank you for that….
Sorry for your loss Paul. The rebuild kit I got from you went in without a hitch. The rebuild was a success. The camaro is almost done, I have some engine compartment wiring to do and I will make a video. Thank you for these informative videos.
Mr Paul, my condolences, those are hard times. Thanks for posting another video. Wow, that main shaft was really worn . Thanks again for doing the new Hurst shifter for my A-833, shifts like a hot knife thru butter.
My condolences. I lost my sister to cancer 2 years ago, and my mother 1 year later. Enjoy your time on earth, I do! I bought 3 (clone) 409 2x4 4 speeds
Good to see you again, sorry for your losses. This video is just what I needed. I have a nwc from an 89 s10 that will be going behind a flathead for a 48 F1. It was an ebay purchase so my plan has been to rebuild it since I know nothing of it's condition. I'm eager to learn something new.
Thank God for these videos. I'm in the process of swapping out a damaged world class with a non world class in a 4x4. Thanks so much for making them sir 💪💪.
Condolences Paul and nice to see you're back. I don't know what upgrades are available for a T5 but on T5 WC I have it has carbon fiber rings and some billet aluminum upgrades. It sits behind a SBC 355 vortec roller in an 86 Grand Prix. A must be upgrade is to get rid of the stock shifter. I have a Hurst with stops that prevents overshifting unlike the sloppy stock shifter.
I watched this video once before out of curiosity, but now having a customer with a T5 am watching it again just to refresh the basic process. Can very much see the influence the T5 had on the development of the NV4500.
Thanks Paul - I've watched this video a bunch of times now. I'm really hoping that you are able to put together 'part 2' showing the repaired parts, replacement parts and assembly... True gold!
This is great. Moving on to part 2 in a minute. I have a T5 from a 3.4 Camaro that is going into my MGB behind a Fiero 2.8. The MG forums all say that the V6 1st gear is too short with our 3.90 rear end, so I plan to rebuild the box and install a V8 first gear. This series will definitely be my guide for the process.
I bought a torn apart tko600 that had been rebuilt just before it exploded. I watched you videos and it turned out great. The last guy did follow your needle bearings shim needle bearings. Thanks for all the videos. Sorry about your family. I will buy you a coffee.
This is a great video! I've got a lot of experience with mustang world class t5, but had not had the opportunity to work on a non-world-class Camaro T5. I have one in an LS swapped 81 Ford Fairmont. He uses a combination of GM main case, 26 spline input shaft, 27 spline output shaft mustang tail shaft extension and shifter plate assembly. Works very well. And has lasted up until a few days ago when I broke the input shaft shifting aggressively in the third gear.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. I have bought your book and these videos as well as your help with the rebuild kits is much appreciated. Sorry for your loss in your family. Covid was a real bitch for a lot of people.
I've got four Volvo M47 boxes in various states of failure. It's the end of the line for M47's since most parts are no longer available. I think I've got enough good parts between them to put together one working transmission. I'm having fun disassembling them and learning how they work. I have the factory service manual but there is so much more to it. Your book looks like exactly what I was looking for. I just placed an order.
Hello Paul sorry for you and Rhonda's loss your sister to? I lost my mom in 19, I have no words sir. As you already know I watch all your videos I am a manual gear box man Thank You for another wonderful video Paul.
So glad you're keepin the stick shift alive, Paul. A new subscriber, but have had your 1st book for years, and have just learned about your videos. Have sent an Email to your Co., for parts, tranny and advice. Another thank you for all you do. Also sorry to hear about your losses, and hoping for your speedy mental recovery.
@@GearBoxVideo I’m keeping my fingers crossed when I pull my apart things look good. I did manage to score a new old stock front bearing retainer as well as a new old stock rear oil seal! I need to buy you a coffee and keep you motivated to get part two up! Hey I don’t know if you follow abom79 on RUclips but he’s in Florida and he also does flame welding of shafts.
I worked as an engineer for plasma and flame spray equipment. Not a good choice for repair on shafts that are subjected to the high PSI needles produce. Best is hard welding. Sleeving and spray welding are OK but in no way bring back the original strength of the shaft. I will explain this when the shaft is repaired in the next video

Welcome back, Paul. Although the last few months were clearly not pleasant, you appear to be in good spirits. Many years ago, you taught me that the shiny synchronizer surface on the gear should be scuffed so that the new brass synchronizer ring will grab it better. Since the mainshaft is bad, and 2nd and 3rd gear are not perfect, you could mention there is an option to use a WC mainshaft and WC mainshaft gears, but retain the NWC cluster gear. However, I know the purpose of this video is to remain NWC-specific.

Hey Paul - Curious if you've seen this before. Reassembling my WC main shaft. When I put the spiral snap ring on, 1 and 2 won't move. The synchro stack (inner/outer cone and blocking ring) seem to be several thousands taller than what I pulled off the shaft. This style of synchro that came in the kit has a fiber strip all the way around (after market). Hadn't seen this type before. Is there a fix or am I buying new synchros?
You need to contact the people that sold you the kit since its possible the aftermarket rings are bent or do not fit correctly... Compare old to new before Assembly... Try old on again see what happens
I put new syncros in a ZF 6spd out of a 2002 F350 7.3L diesel, and I had to push 2 gears and a bearing off all at once--- and it was sketchy to say the least. My press has a 32 ton bottle jack and I was seemingly pushing that jack to it's limits before it finally popped like a shotgun round going off--- and it all came off just fine after it busted loose. Kinda scary while it was in the press though.

ZF units have tight press fits cause they also heat shrink the parts
