    It doesn't matter what make of vehicle you like or hate, after watching the entire video, Paul is obviously very skilled at what he does and has a wealth of knowledge that I respect. Great job on the tear down and explanation of what things are and why they broke.

      +GearBoxVideo Do you have any experience with astro performance gear sets or their built t5s?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo 8 лет назад +1

      I do know the company that makes their gears and have installed a few sets. Pretty much also like the G-Force sets. These gearsets still break and in my opinion not worth the effort or money. Just upgrade to a TKO or T56.

      +GearBoxVideo Thanks for the info. Been debating with myself on either an astro a5, t56 or a 4r70. Leaning towards the 4r70. Going behind a turbo 351w.

      EricTheCarGuy I'm glad you like it dude! I'll try to get my hands on a few more Aussie car badges and send them over. I currently have two R31 Skyline badges (ones on my car) from the Aus delivered version, if I can get a third i'll send it over

    Eric,You have given me so much confidence over the years to work on my own cars with ease.I have solved so many issues with my vehicles and got them back on the road with little expense by not taking it to the garage as money has been tight most of the time`and this is when the car decides to pack up`the car is so needed in my life and it effects me greatly when it goes wrong,but thanks to you I`ve managed to get the vehicles back on the road following your advice.The thing about your vids you give so many routs to check be for jumping the gun and most of the time I solve the problem.I had never thought to thank you be for` Ive always took your advice for granted so. Thank you for keeping me out of debt and learning me about vehicle fixes a big thumbs up to you and all.

    Great video. Thank you. 7 months ago I, for the first time, became a Fox Body Mustang GUY. It's my project/toy car. It has the T-5. I am not having any problems with it. But I have always been a ,visual inside my head, person that when I am, say, shifting the gear. I see inside my head everything mechanical going on inside the trans. So i like to really see what's inside of anything mechanical to help me with that visual. I know it sounds crazy. It is how I have always been. I am just always engineering things inside my head. Hey, it works for me. LOL. Also, I am sure one day I will rebuild my T-5. I bought this car to flog the heck out of it at the autocross and canyons up north.
    This was a real treat. I have been paying attention to the Fairmont build. Very cool project. I have always like those cars. Even back in the day when there was NOTHING cool about a Fairmont. I always thought they were. Looking forward to seeing more of the progression on this car.

    Great video here, it's one thing to look at a diagram and kind of assume how everything works but it's something else to have someone so qualified run you through it. Paul has a great video presence in that he not only shows everything and describes what it does as well as shortcuts for disassembly but also throws in little bits of the history and does so in a confident manner. Great video, thanks guys.

      One of the things I like about these two videos is that Paul goes a little further than other videos about showing what is happening in the disassembly and more about his thoughts on why things are the way they are. He talks about what makes a bad part- a bad part as if the watcher has little experience building the transmission- which is exactly the case for me. I have now done four transmissions-all different- but go into them now with confidence that I never had before and owe it all to Paul’s videos. He doesn’t teach it like the viewer is a dunce; he teaches it like the viewer has a vested interest in the outcome. That makes these invaluable to me. I tore apart a T5 last night knowing that if I got into trouble, he would be there, and I would have full access to the information. Thank you for that-

    Hi Paul, you helped me with some excellent wisdom in your forum a number of years ago; thank you again. I haven't rebuilt 1000s of T5s, but perhaps 10s. I know hindsight is 20/20, but you keep on referring to 5th gear as reverse (reverse is inside like 3- and 4-speed Saginaws). I don't know whether you make a corrective comment later on, or will make the comment in part 2.
    Also, it isn't necessary to remove the roll pin from the 5th gear fork, unless you are replacing the fork. The fork and rod can be removed along with 5th gear, and then reassembled as a unit. This trick saves a step and prevents possible damage to the fork and/or rod...but you probably knew it already!

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo 8 лет назад

      +t5montecarlo Pay attention to what I'm saying. "Reverse Brake Cone". This particular T5 has a synchro reverse which is part of the 5th speed synchro assembly. You will also not be able to rotate the rail leaving it pinned to the fork. You can do it with a struggle, but the struggle is not worth the time spent when you can drop the pin. Reverse brake systems are a little different than standard systems which allow you to remove the fork still pinned to the rail. When I build a T5 I trial fit every component including the fork to the 5th assembly because sometimes I've seen these forks bend. So it is necessary and very important. You should polish the rails and trial fit the rail by itself in the case to make sure its nice and free. I don't take short cuts.

    • @t5montecarlo
      @t5montecarlo 8 лет назад +1

      +GearBoxVideo Sorry for the misunderstanding, Paul. It has been 20 years since I worked on a WC T5. I see the brass cone on the outside of 5th gear; I haven't seen one of those before. I would like to learn more about that feature of the T5. Do you know of a good resource to learn more about the reverse brake cone on a T5? Was it just a feature used by some Ford models?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo 8 лет назад

    They know a bit... I watched this video because It felt I could do the rebuild myself; Conclusion, to my mechanic it is. Lots of respect for these guys, they’re like car doctors

    Had a T5 in my 1988 EA Ford Fairmont Ghia (Australia). Loved it; especially that ratio on 2nd gear.

    I get the impression Paul has done more than one of these rebuilds. The more I watched this the more I came to the realization that If I took this thing apart I'd never get it back together correctly and it would be best if I just dropped it off with him and had him do it. I'll bet he could reassemble this thing with his eyes closed.

    Eric, The green 3M Bristle Disc is 50 grit with aluminum oxide abrasive mineral, it WILL remove aluminum like sand paper, ok for steel, but not for aluminum. You will see what I mean when you try to buff out the surface and the deep scratches show themselves. Other wise thumbs up to this video.

  • @allanpeters
    @allanpeters 9 лет назад

    Great video, kept my attention all the way through.
    The green roloc bristle discs are actually a little coarse for aluminum, the one you want is the yellow... they won't leave scratches in the surface because they are a finer grit.

    Thank you Paul! I subscribed to your channel (+followed on FB) and I plan to order the book this week because you have been so helpful in these 2 videos!
    I already got my ebay T5 rebuild kit, it was delivered months ago and it has been sitting all winter. The good news is we've used this kit before in our Chumpcar racecar, so I'm not too worried. But your kit would have been so much better! Note, at the first signs of trouble I'll be ordering your kit!
    Again, thank you!
