  • When we study paratexts, all the features around the text itself, we can learn how the ancient world read their sacred traditions, how they understood them, and what they did with them. But we’ve not yet attempted to use modern day techniques to understand how people from the past, and today, process and approach Scriptures through paratext.
Professor Garrick Allen continues his exploration of paratexts, beyond just interpretation and understanding, by exploring how the mind processes paratexts and the way that people read them. Experts in religious manuscripts are working side-by-side with a scientific team to craft empirical studies that test the assumptions of aesthetic cognitivism, as well as the specific psychological effects and cognitive functions of paratexts.
