  • The Ringer’s Ben Solak looks at the recent play of Packers quarterback Jordan Love, to try and discern whether he's the future of the franchise in Green Bay. Love's athletic talent and trick-shot throws have gotten a lot of attention this season, but Solak argues that his underlying mechanics are just as noteworthy. Love only has one year left on his contract after this season, but if his stellar play keeps up, he could be in Green Bay for a long time to come. I love hearing people that watch and analyze every game saying they like what they are seeing from Love and that he has potential. Yet I'm still hearing people, especially Packers fans saying they don't like him still and he has been lucky recently. Never watched anything by Ben Solak before but this was extremely entertaining. Haven't been able to watch much Packers this season but seeing their recent surge had me curious as to how Jordan was doing. Looks like he's developing nicely! His ceiling? Who knows. But the arm talent certainly seems to be there.

The way I see it is that Crosby might have been better on FGs this year, but going with Carlson is probably more important to the team's future.
One of the biggest issues with Crosby in the last few years has been his declining leg strength. How much of that is due to injuries vs. age is up for debate, but it definitely had an effect on his use. We rostered a 2nd kicker for a game last year because we weren't sure Crosby was going to be able to go, and we punted or went for a riskier 4th down in a few situations because there was no longer confidence in Crosby being able to make kicks from those longer distances. We had also been sitting around the bottom of the league in touchback percentage on kickoffs for several years and were giving opponents good starting field position as a result.
Carlson may or may not work out, but his leg strength was the immediate tangible upgrade over Crosby and the staff believes they can develop his accuracy. He may not work out and we might need to turn to another kicker in a year or two if that is the case, but keeping Crosby would only delay the need to start that search; likely with declining results in the meantime.
This next 1-2 years where we're rebuilding, limited in cap space, and not likely to be competitive in the postseason is the perfect time to try and find a younger kicker to carry forward for the next decade, even if that causes some issues in the short-term.

Compare 2023 Jordan Love to 2008 Aaron Rodgers. Records (5-6) are the same after 11 games. 2,599 passing yards are exactly the same! 21 total touchdowns are exactly the same! Love's 19 passing touchdowns/10 interceptions & Rodgers' 17 passing touchdowns/9 interceptions are not all that different after 11 games. You can't look at the stats & say Rodgers was way better when he took over the offense back in 2008. If GB had decided to go a different direction after Rodgers first 11 games or first season as a starter, would GB have won the Super Bowl two seasons later? The coaches & players love Jordan Love, and they know him the best! Personally, I think Love is a breath of fresh air (Rodgers became a Diva, & he has brought that to Jets - demanding sub-par players & coaches be on their team). When a team lets a player call the shots, they are doomed! No one is missing Rodgers in the GB locker room this year. GB still controls their own destiny after 11 games, which is better than some teams. The Packers have not been perfect this year, but that is not all on Love. The pass protection has improved, & the young receivers are improving, too! It's a team sport, & this year is a good reminder of that!

You can't compare the stats of today to the stats of 2008. Quarterbacks and receivers today are coddled like never before. They have 1 of the easiest schedules in the NFL this year whereas in Rodgers first year they had the 3rd toughest schedule in the NFL. Competition level matters. I will agree Rodgers had better more veteran receivers his first year starting. The reason the Packers sucked last year was because of their D and the fact their WRs led the league in drops. They still drop to many balls this year so it isn't all on Love but they still have only played 4 out of 11 game against teams with winning records and they've lost 3 of them.

I think on some of those deep balls, including the big one to Watson vs. the Lions, he's still gotta dial in at what point exactly he wants to commit to the throw based on what he's seeing from the defender. Sometimes where the receiver has had to slow down & wait for the ball they still would have been open & likely got the ball in stride if it had been thrown a few tenths of a second earlier.

The future is Footwork. The Packers (if they ever want to win another playoff game) will start a QB who has good footwork. Love has a looooong way to go with that--he is not the off platform phenom that people have been saying he is. He has about 70% of the zip and about 50% of the touch that you need to have to be an effective off-platform passer. Let's see how defenses adjust to him in the second half of the season. If the Packers make the playoffs that's good enough for a new contract--but a Blockbuster Deal? He better bring back the silverware if he wants Deshaun kinda money.

Also, it’s well past mid season, people have been game planning for him for several weeks, including the past 4 weeks where the Packers went 3-1. Can he get better, yes. Is he doing crazy good things recently? Sure is.

    • @kurtwicklund8901
      @kurtwicklund8901 6 месяцев назад

No he did not make all the throws footwork or not. It happened on the first play of the game. With good footwork Love hits Watson in stride before the safety can cross the field. Instead of a 53 yarder Watson takes it to the house.
This play was complete but footwork has cost many incompletions or loss of YAC.
If this is a dumb way to look at a QB then every NFL QB coach is dumb.

You earned a like for your explanation of Love's audition year and how the contract enters into it. You earned a "here we go again" for assuming because Love has turned some sort of corner because he's had two good games. YT is full of videos gushing over these two game.
But you said it yourself. He has been inconsistent all season. So why has he suddenly become consistently good? It is just as likely he will have two mediocre games in a row.
I am not saying he is a bust. I am saying he has not improved his very bad footwork all season. This leads to his accuracy inconsistency and his routinely underthrown long balls.
With bad footwork his ceiling is pretty good but not great. Does GB want to roll that way? Or in a deep QB draft do they make a move to snag a top prospect? That route means a cheap QB under a rookie contract for 4-5 years.
IMO Jordan Love still has considerable convincing to do.

He was a raw prospect and hasn’t played much football besides practice in the last 3 years. As he’s gotten more reps he’s steadily gotten more confident and sharper mechanically. It’s easy to see why people are excited.

      Nah he's QB16 this season.
He started well, sucked for a bit now he's back on track.
He's better than Rodgers was last year
