  • With a potential contract extension looming for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa this offseason, The Ringer's Ben Solak takes a look at his recent play and identifies some weaknesses in his game after a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills. Mike McDaniel's offensive system has been a boon to Tua's game, but how should we evaluate his skill set as a QB after this season, and how much cap room does he deserve moving forward? Ben, if you did a video per week going over the intricacies of the various offensive nd defensive CONCEPTS, separate from TEAMS or PlAYERS, I think it would be a huge hit.
They way you break down Robber, Tampa, Cover Teo, etc. I love it. I would love MORE of it.

I see Tua not being able to extend plays is a massive issues. Defenses are told “get Tua out of the pocket and he’s done” and it’s true. Also, Mcdaniels is calling very predictable plays. We run every first down, and if we get more than 3 yards we do it again. Too many screen plays this last game against the chiefs. Tua HAS to win these games. With a depleted defense we gave our offense more than enough opportunities. If we can’t do anything with Waddle and Hill, we gotta move on from Tua as much as it pains me to say it.

8:21 You acknowledge that he's capable of making the throw from the play before. Without mentioning the difference is on the 2nd he stepped up in the pocket to avoid pressure and the first the pocket collaped and he got body slammed to the ground after barely getting off the throw on the half yard line. This is the problem with breaking down plays and using absolutes like "You have to do XYZ"

The Dolphins should move on but they’re also stuck in the unenviable position where they can’t. They aren’t in a position to draft the can’t miss prospects and the QB market doesn’t provide a clear and obvious upgrade.
Personally, I think they should scoop up Penix or maybe even look into possibly moving up for Daniels and get them in the building for a year while Tua plays out the 5th year of his deal. Then you hit reset on your QB window and continue to fill out the depth around them.
It just doesn’t seem wise to lock up an obviously flawed QB long term at 40-50 million a year.

The issue with Tua is his complete INABILITY to extend plays. The reason he struggles ALL THE TIME vs Great defenses is because when you force him to hold the ball longer than the usual 2.5s and his OL loses, he just can't do a thing about it.
The ability to extend plays separates the good QBs from the great ones. And this is why I also believe someone like Brock Purdy is actually underrated..when you watch SF..and there's pressure he is mobile enough to make something for himself on top of the system stuff. Tua cannot do this

    • @t4d0W

I feel he also has to take the next step against defenses that excel in pre to post snap window dressing. Sure Tua won't see them often enough in the regular season but in the playoffs, they are going to gate keep him hard as those DCs are in playoff teams. MacDonald of the Ravens is excellent with it adjusting his back 7 and throwing odd four-man rushes. Spags changes the picture post snap but also throwing aggressive blitzes.

Tua isn’t gonna work out. He gets rid of the ball fast for more than 1 reason. The reason he climbed that pocket with no pressure is cuz he knows his limitations and lack of arm strength. He put all he had in that throw and the safety still got their. If that isn’t enough to want us to move on then your just content with making playoffs and that to me sounds crazy. Tua is nothing more than a robot being aided by scheme and his playmakers. Not even a good robot at that. Had so many easy crossers and checkdowns and he chose to lock on into Hill. 1 read weak armed QB. He questioned whether he was good enough to play in this league. Doesn’t that raise a red flag? Idc how much of a jerk Flores was. If I know I’m good at something nobody can make me think otherwise. He knows what’s up. Only thing that could’ve saved him is going threw reads at an elite level and I thought that something he was good at but this kid doesn’t process anything. He reads the defenses pre snap and determines who he’s gonna throw too. He’s gonna f around and get McDaniel fired. I myself blamed McDaniel for bad decisions in this game but the tape shows Tua didn’t take the wide open underneath routes. This kid is NOT reading the field & going to his 1st read. It’s a shame to all the guys in that locker room. This is an ELITE scheme he’s playing in. This video really made
Me change my opinion on McDaniels scheme. The plays were their for us to keep drives alive. Tua just making bad read after bad read. Forcing to Reek and throwing that Ball to Claypool. Bad route but it’s double coverage and u can’t throw that.

As an honest rational dolphins fan, this is my dilemma. Hes still like a top 8 to 12 QB. But he’s not special in anyway and things need to be great around him like a Cousins or Goff. It’s a very tricky position to be in because the odds of finding one of those top like 4 elite guys is very slim.

    • @deviden13
      @deviden13 4 месяца назад

@@johnrossi3812 You have to look at where other teams have messed up and avoided a mess - most recently, the Giants and Ravens. Separate "win with him" QBs from the "win because of him" QBs. Nobody but the Giants was looking to lock Daniel Jones down to a multiyear $40m/year extension but the Giants owner loves DJ like a son and they found they could "win with" DJ by making a surprise playoff appearance, so they outbid themselves to overpay a mid (at best) QB and stunted their roster/cap rebuild. Tua is a great guy but that sentiment will leave you outbidding yourselves - he's a "win with" guy and you can find another of those much cheaper than Tua's agent will demand to get an early extension. So... what do? The ideal solution is what the Ravens did with Lamar - when Tua stops being cheap you give Tua the opportunity to see what other teams are willing to pay him and promise to beat their terms if the contract is of an acceptable value.
Tua is worth keeping but not at a franchise QB price point. There's a $APY cap hit at which you just have to admit it's better to trade up, draft a new cheap guy and sign a journeyman veteran than keep Tua.

Ben Solak is on my shit list rn for basically saying the Bills were lucky to win the last five games. Discounting the win against the Chiefs because of the offsides, even though if that had stood Josh would get the ball back with plenty of time. Discounting the win against the Patriots because it was only by one score, even though the Patriots are a division opponent and still had a top defense. With Belicheck who has spent years trying to figure out how to stop Josh. Not to mention that the Pats got a lucky kick return touchdown on the first play. And discounting the win against Miami because they needed the punt return touchdown to win the game! Even though the Bills completely dominated that game. If James Cook catches the easy touchdown and if helmet to helmet is called before the half it's a very different story. And the game against the Chargers on a short week across the country against a desperate team who got embarrassed the week before! What the hell Ben! The Bills went from having a.500 record and basically no chance of making the playoffs to the second seed in the east. But he wants to say all those wins were fluky. A win is a win is a win. Usually love Ben's takes and analysis but ti say basically the Bills got lucky to turn it around because they should have beat certain teams by more is super insulting

Miami's defense gave up so many yards to Buffalo which was expected. But somehow someway they were able to generate three turnovers and stop them in the fourth quarter to give the offense another shot. And now, back to back weeks the special teams has aloud a TD and a kickoff return to the 11-yard line. And then the failed two-point conversion. Which they should have never went for. These mistakes takes the breath out of these players sometimes. And with all the injuries certain players on the defense are playing 88 to 95% of the snaps. At best you trade a bunch of assets and take a shot on the 3rd or 4th best rookie qb in the next two years, or you sign a veteran to an insane deal and have to move on from valuable pieces. I think people forget that Tua is just 25, has grown a lot in the last two years and can still grow over the next several. He was given one of the worst environments in recent memory for his first two season which stunted his growth, but I think a lot of the issues we see of him shrinking in the pocket and not being a plus playmaker can be improved. Hell, those have improved versus the last season.

I have been saying this for the past 2 months. When defenses are disrupting the route running go to the hurry up offense. Not for the whole game. Here and there. And the scientific theory behind that is to not allow the opposing defense to rotate players, keep them on their heels, mess up their communication. Now that being said against Baltimore in the second quarter before the 2-minute warning that was a hurry up interception. Are there cadences predictable?? And when they do the pre-snap motion can't they design the play for the receiver to stop and use more cadence?? Just a question. Maybe they do it already, just asking. Although your film study it looks like it's very predictable

Sure he'd like a rocket arm guy too with athleticism but he didn't luck with one in the draft. Right now the feature of that Fins team is speed but its also been shown that when Tyreek or Waddle are out for games or even small stretches, the offense is not stressing opposing defenses as they would otherwise.
