Bryce Young Might Be in Serious Trouble | The Play Sheet

- The Ringer’s Ben Solak talks through first overall pick Bryce Young's rookie season so far. His tape can be rough to watch, but with new coaches, a shaky O-line, and a WR corps devoid of star power, it'd be reasonable to place the blame for his lackluster performance elsewhere. The Carolina Panthers have put their faith in Bryce, but his future might depend on his ability to evolve his reads, timing, and ball placement.

The Howdy intro needs to stay ASAP
That Richie shoutout got me crying in the club (my office) - what a heartfelt shoutout, we love y’all, keep up the good work!
Thanks Ben for calling out my boy Richie, and keep up the good work. Love what you do. Go Birds
A 6'3, 215 lbs quarterback... is basically what CJ Stroud measured exactly at the combine
Just like Donald Trump, right?
@@stevengordon3271What a weird ass comment.
@stevengordon3271 is a difference between 215 pounds of muscle and 215 pounds of fat
Man stroud is elite glad we stole him in the draft wanted cj from the jump never believed in itty bitty bryce
Love the Play Sheet! Helps me really understand some concepts in simple fashion. Editing and production top notch!
Thanks Richie! This content truly is the best! Love what u guys do
Thanks Richie! Love the show. You did a great job. Best of luck in the future!
Thanks Cory, you're the man. You're awesome too.
Thanks Ben, enjoyed this one.
Love the detailed breakdowns with video replay. Great for us to understand how schemes and routes work. Please do more. 🙂
I need more play sheets these are the best videos the ringer puts out. You help me understand football on a level I never knew was possible
Same. Go check out a channel called The QB School. Longtime NFL backup J.T. O'Sullivan puts out an onslaught of videos after every weekend of football action. Same kind of thing..
shout out richie! watched every ep and i love them, im sure you'll find success at whatever you decide to pursue and good luck !
The words, "Why I won't panic on Bryce Young just yet", make him sound ridiculous. You mean a rookie QB on one of the least talented rosters in the League is struggling? Nooooo. 🥱
Put Bryce on the Colts and see what a more accurate passer would do with an actual receiving corp and a very good offensive line.
Our original pick was #9 soooo just doing the simple math here but the Texans and the colts picked earlier than 9 because they were a worse team last year 😅 Anthony Richardson doesn't have an issue pushing the ball downfield, and he's a threat rushing the ball which forces the defense to make sure everything is accounted for. Carolinas receivers all had more yards of separation than Justin Jefferson on Sunday....Jefferson was guarded almost all game by a guy from the practice squad.......and if Bryce would stop holding the ball and get it out on time (like he was advertised to be able to do day 1) he wouldn't be taking near as many sacks. The seahawks sacked DJ 11 times......behind the same oline as Bryce Andy Dalton got sacked twice 😅
First time catching this segment and absolutely love it. Well done!
Good luck, Richie!
Thanks Richie for all your hard work. Great show!!
This is a great video. Keep them coming RINGER
I still can’t believe the Panthers traded all that just to draft Young. Not Stroud, who’s a prototype at the position, but Bryce a small QB. It’s a really dumb decision seeing how many better QBs will come next year. This will get Frank fired after a couple seasons.
Hopefully sooner
It's unbelievable really. To mortgage so much away to move up in a draft without any one standout obvious pick and then pick the smallest guy. Positively maddening.
I think frank wanted CJ but the ownership wanted Bryce. Either way Frank’s offense is awful and he’s gotta do something different.
Stroud wouldn’t be doing any better in Reich’s 90s style offense. Screw waiting 2 years. Fire him now.
Typical prisoner of the moment in sports.😂he’s played 3 games bruh, 3 GAMES. How r u a fan of a team yet resdy to give up on a promising young player just cuz he hasn’t carried ur shxtty coached team with shxtty receivers and running backs to a undefeated season
Love these videos.
The small 5'10 QB is having issues due to his size and strength. Hmmm, who could have seen this coming? Tepper poor decision setback Panthernation for the next 4 years. Thanks a lot Tepper.
Nothing convinces me you don't know ball like bringing up height. Bryce doesn't even display any issues a smaller QB traditionally would have. He's been most effective throwing between the numbers.
@@unc54 could you name 5 players in the last 40 years who are under 6 feet, who have been successful NFL franchise QBs? I'll get you started, Russell Wilson....
@@unc54all the things that Chris Simms criticize Bryce young about is showing up. Very small, weak arm, not athletic. Have you seen young take any shots down the field? No
@@samflynn3670 Drew Brees.
@@samflynn3670 I think 5-10 to 6-0 foot is a better example
If I recall correctly the Andy Dalton game, the receivers had much more time to get open thanks to seattles d line, wrs were just much more open in general
Man you do a great job looking over film !! But as a panthers fan and some others have mentioned it looked like Dalton had a completely different play book then Bryce has had
thanks ritchie, seen every episode. good luck where ever you go. stay blesses
The ESPN hype machine got their SEC boy the top spot. Never seen top ten pick and I thought I was going crazy because I did not see what they were pushing me to see.
Keep the Howdy!
What breath of fresh air to see someone do a complete analysis of bryce young and where his limitations are, instead of ranting about wr arent getting open and the oline cant protect props to this guy💯💯💯
Panthers fan here, I DO NOT need this kind of RUclips Title in my life. It’s hard enough being a Charlotte sports fan man leave us alone
Great stuff Ben
All these reasons are why Andy should start for at least the next year or two to give Bryce time to develop.
Adam Thielen is def past him prime but to call him a career number 2 receiver is a little absurd when he was only #2 to 2 top 5 receivers in the nfl
Great show
Thanks Richie!
As usual great eval Ben. I think Bryce needs to be more decisive and also I just don’t think Bryce is fast enough but boy when he’s on he looks good. You didn’t show it but I hope you saw his smoothness on the saints run in the 2nd quarter(?) I think he’ll be better but as a panther fan who was all in on CJ this kinda sucks
I that makes you happier I highly doubt CJ would look like he does in Houston. Bobby Slowik and DeMeco Ryan’s might have been a bit underrated because nobody knew really how they would transfer to OC and HC but they’ve done a terrific job in designing the offense and getting around weaknesses like the injured line. The Panthers star studded coaching staff has let me down a bit in that regard but I really wouldn’t be surprised if the Panthers would really point upwards in the second half of the season
I don’t wanna hear o line problems being an excuse, CJ stroud was on his 4th string left tackle vs tj watt
Simple answer…PANIC!
Unless you have the athleticism of Michael Vick and having his speed and arm strength, small NFL QBs can be problematic because they cannot see over the offensive line.
Awesome show
everything that you stated is everything that i have seen from watching bryce in the games. with no film. or No advanced stats. i have been telling people frank calls streak, fades and out routes outside the numbers and young never delivers. on all the deep ball he overthrows and if you watch the path of his balls they always tend to be wobbly and not a tight spiral. Bryce is a huge disappointing 1st overall pick. his ceiling in the NFL at most is a avg qb. btw thats not a drop on thielen. bryce has two drops from wr in three games.i dont believe thats one of them. thielen had to jump for that ball i get it. touched his hands but that ball should have been placed better. i dont think that was really a catchable ball. And thats a ding on the qb. Bryce struggles with ball placement. he also doesnt push the ball down the field as he ranks dead last in aggresivnes stat at 6.8 meanwhile andy dalton like you stated which i already knew does play way more aggresive backed u by his 13.8 aggresive rating. bryce is also bottom 10 in the league for 2.93 slowest releases mixing that with a weak arm says a lot. Dalton is top 5 with 2.5 behind dak who 2.49 so you can see why our offense looks alot better with dalton than bryce you dont have to compensate. last bryce is also dead last in avg passing yard intended 5.2 also 33/34 qb in avg pass yards per 4.9 thats terrible. you breakdowm shows me that because of his style he is severely capped in the NFL. theres alot of other metric for qbs that he bottom or dead last in i didnt understand them so i left them alone but you should get the point good video.
How can Young push the ball down field with the receivers he got? Sure Dalton was aggressive for one game but for one its a small sample size and he's not a rookie! He's also 6'2" and plays like he sees over his linemen so of course he's more comfy airing it out to WRs who can barely separate. But overall the passing attack is not sustainable to be able to have a consistent deep attack for those either those 2 QBs in this poor offensive system.
@@t4d0Wall you have to do is look at CJ Stroud though.
Cj has had a banged up Oline and unknown receivers besides the Vet Woods and is a straight killer.
It’s still to early to call Young a bust but it’s eye opening that all his major flaws (height, weak arm etc)coming out are showing out in the pros.
RICHIE! Didn't know you but already miss you baby
There should be no panic. Zero. There SHOULD be improvenent in 2nd half of season tho. But for now, no one should be panicking
Making excuses for Bryce doesn't help him! Andy Dalton doesn't have to wait for better receivers, so Bryce shouldn't either
Sorry dude but 14:54 was an obvious overthrow. Had a little too much heat. Receiver stretched for it but there was no way to even jump for that in stride.
Good luck Richie
Hard to imagine any rookie qb having success getting drafted to a bad team.
CJ does!
Young is not the problem. Panther do not know how to put together an offensive line...
Thanks Richie
Props to Richie🎉
who would've thought the 5'9 175 lb qb would struggle in the NFL. He looks legitimately tiny on the field.
I love how aggressively aggressive he gets about football
As a bama fan I've always didn't like Bryce's lazy dropback and it seems to be too much to overcome in the league. Gotta just get it overhauled over the offseason and it should clean a LOT up
Don't even comment but thanks Richie! Thanks to the playsheet!
We must protect Ben Solak at all costs.
Thanks and good luck Richie!
good job Richie another banger
Best show on the Ringer!!!!
THANK YOU BOZ MAN
You have done a good job, Richard.
I've watched him in high school, college as well - the only reason this kid is in trouble is because of his surroundings. His offensive line is porous, pass catchers are as well. This is why I applaud if/when Caleb Williams decides to hold out for the right opportunity.
Caleb should not do that. Eli was able to do that because of who his pops and brother were and I feel that was more with Archie than Eli. Anything can happen and you can’t pick and chose whose to say the same team or a worse organization doesn’t get the pick the next year then what does he do
Eli's decision was not 'OK'ed' because of his bloodlines. It was heavily scrutinized then, and still is in some circles. While one cannot guarantee that a team Williams wishes to go to won't be a dumpster fire, there's a strong chance that he is going to elevate a franchise and give stability to the most important position on the team. I'm not OK with perennial dumpster fires getting first grabs to ruin a player and will continue to support those who don't want to go somewhere because, 'that's how it has always been...'@@brandonjackson6323
All the excuses you laid out for Young could be used for Stroud as well, but he's been great on an awful Texans team. When you're the number 1 overall pick, you're supposed to elevate the guys around you. Not limit your playbook to screens and hitches.
Stroud's making it work with Nico Collins, Stafford is making it work with Puka Nakua, Bryce should be able to move the offense better than this
First pick needs to make up for those other deficiencies to some degree, if he can’t then he shouldn’t have been the first pick. Harsh reality but that’s always been the case in the nfl.
Anybody with a head on their shoulders and 2 eyeballs would not have picked this kid 1st, regardless of his college career or some bs test
90 percent of Carolina playbook is screens
It seems to me, that bryce is having alot of, off platform throws and not having the arm and size to put enough on the ball to make up for his feet not being set. Hes gotta plant and drive being his size and not have aaron rodgers feet because he doesn't have rodgers's arm.
Me: Bryce young is not the right QB for us...
Dumb panthers fans: "aww give him a chance, his recievers cant get open and coaching is bad it's only 4 weeks in.
Me: ok....well shouldnt we give them time to improve too? I mean if Bryce hasnt had enough time, cant we give that same logic to the rest of the team?
Dumb panthers fans: no, because Bryce is so small, and nice and we love him. He deserves better. Not the team... just Bryce.
Good objective break down I hope other panthers fans watched
First play I don’t even think was open I really don’t think anyone was ever really open on that first play
CJ and AR have just as bad environments and have shown positive signs
Adam Thielen was a top 15 reciever in the league for half a decade put some respek on his name
Big ups to Richie! And to Ben for another great piece of content!
Richie!!!
For folks making the odd job comparison with Stroud doing better with little, lets give flowers to OC Slowik for designing a pass game and putting solid talented receivers in winning positions. Collins is 6'4 210 lbs with a big catch radius and he's leading the league in YAC. Dell of course is the speedster and the staff is finding ways to try get him open down field. You can tell me all of the accolades Theilen has but he's 33 yrs old and isn't great at separating. The rest of the Panthers receivers aren't ball winners and nice route runners either. Add with Reich/Brown's uninspiring play calling and the pass game just doesn't have that punch that either Young nor the rookie QBs in Stroud or Richardson can excel in. Nor a run game where those guys can catch a breather (lol Miles Sanders).
And for someone whose pretty young, I'm surprised you dropped the David Carr reference. That guy never caught a good break as a rookie QB and neither did Tim Couch.
Cope more. Panthers are more talented than texans... panthers fans are just stupid as fuck, I told yall to pick cj shroud NEVER LISTEN TO THE MEDIA when. They tell u who is the best qb, they loved Zack Wilson and trey lance over Justin fields.. and field IS better tha. Them ON A WORST TEAM.
Everything nfl pendants tell u to draft a qb do not, richserson is meh I would put him in the same bucket as young at this point. But young is looking bad.
Thank you Richie!!!
BY may be something one day, but not with this coach, or owner.
Anthony Richardson was 11/25 Sunday. We're overreacting to "HE'S SO ATHLETIC AND ARM BIG" huy again.
No whiteboard! I'm lost trying to figure out how to proceed with life
Wow now, what is with all this Thielen hate? He has been really good for the Panthers so far, he has 27 catches on 33 targets. Which means only 6 passes in 4 games haven't been caught, yet 2 of those 6 were shown in this video?
Plus the smarmy remark that Thielen wasn't a #1 WR for the Vikings. Which is true because they had Diggs and then Jefferson, two of the best WRs in the game now and probably will go down as all time greats. Even still, Thielen had two pro bowl seasons where he had more catches and yards than Diggs.
RICHIE I LOVE YOU!!!!
Detroit is going to eat him alive
I still want TO KNOW HOW IS HE ON A 2014 EASPORTS GAME HOLDING A 2021 HEISMAN TROPHY AND WON THE HEISMAN IN 2021
After 2 mos since this excellent piece was made… can I start panicking now?
Frank Reich’s 1960’s offensive mind set isn’t helping Bryce either , honestly in what universe does Frank Reich warrant and NFL head coaching job ???
How can a fourteen year old know so much about football?
the one you said just catch it literally wasnt catchable by anyone besides like hopkins and pickens
He is in trouble, would see what his front office, hc, gm
Do to help him and oline improvements.
Bryce cannot even run a goaline offence. He still just sits in shotgun😮 13:58 and throws. So on every play you know what he is going to do. He has never taken a snap from under center. He does not know anthing about pocket passer. NOTHING HE CANT THINK . THE ONLY THING YOU COULD TRY IS Surround HIM WITH GREAT Teammates.
The kid will be fine by this time next year he’ll be playing much better
CJ weapons and online have the same level of talent and injuries... that ain't it
Always draft the big guy
Btw reich gave more open plays to dalton
Phenomenal breakdown. I root for smaller dudes.. but bryce seems a wee bit small for what he faces.. Even super patty mahomes needs tons of help to be successful.. Bryce has none of that help patty gets..
You missed your calling. You need to get up to DC and fill in as the presidential spinmeister. This offense, play calling and qb play has been terrible. They showed life with Dalton. So what do they do? They go back to the rookie.
He has to take an extra step back or two. He can’t see over the line too small
Would have rather had Stroud...
Definitely shouldn’t feel great goin into Miami! 😂
And cj gnna destroy the panthers show off what they passed up on 😂😂
I think Bryce is out least of our worries rn he needs help BAD
I am a Panthers fan. I don’t have an issue with Bryce’s height. Only thing I have seen with him is pocket presence issues and reading blitzes.
We lack talent and I am not too crazy about the staff, but Our biggest problem is the Oline. We can’t run the ball, and there are communication problems on most pass plays. Even with those problems, ball needs to come out or he needs to take off the moment he senses a breakdown. I think he’s not anticipating and reading some blitzes
INT FUMBLE MACHINE
He's not good. Had huge Zach Wilson vibes before the draft, but for some reason he was the Clear #1 pick. tiny noodle arm quarterbacks. People get paid to scout these guys and he was picked probably because of Tua and Jalen Hurts.
Hey dude, leave Young alone...you admitted that he has a weak OL and weak receivers...the Panthers were bad before he got there
Stroud > Richardson > Young
panthers picked the worst qb out of all 3. their coach frank reich might be worse than matt rhule was. panthers ownership is awful
RICHIE
Bryce is gonna be fine. Theres only 4 skills player on the whole offense that were even on the team last year lol. And a completely new coaching staff. Keep Pounding.
That was a clear overthrow buddy. 14:50
BUST YOUNG
Anyone that says a top rookie qb is in trouble or labels them a bust after 3 games has zero football knowledge at all and r the worst type of fans
Problem with Bryce Young is that he lacks so many physical traits that he has to be near perfect on every play and have a ton of help should've never been #1 pick. Would be playing decent with good supporting cast but don't think he'll ever be elite with missing so many physical traits.
