@@ItsTomRich Thanks, Not prioritizing the blur but just the total exposure of light on this was really really good, will this be achieved by light and a 2.8?
I was literally just lookin for reviews about this camera because I'm planning to buy one atm and your vid popped up in my recommendations! You just helped me a bunch in deciding whether I should get this baby or nah. Great vid and review brother, cheers!🍻
Im a Nikon hybrid shooter (yes we do exist 😆) I was looking at this camera but then the S5II dropped, its only £200 more and seems to be a more complete hybrid camera. I can get the S5II as a kit with the 20-60 kit lens and 50mm for £2399. Just seems a no brainer at the moment
There’s no 4K 120 on the S5ii, and it’s actually a huge advantage to have this body be video-first instead of hybrid where it’s photo-first. But the S5ii looks incredible! Just think there’s tons of insane options now it’s so great to see. P.s, sorry about your Nikon Mark 🤣😉 (joke ofc!)
I’d love to see a review of the SmallRig MagicFIZ but for zooming. I’m curious to know if the motors are powerful enough *and* smooth enough for zooming the lens. I still use camcorders for events, but I’d love to use mirrorless cameras instead. But I need smooth zooms! 😎
Oh interesting! I’ll give it a little test. I think another thing to look at for you would be the power zoom lenses from Sony that integrate with the hardware
I’ll be getting the FX30 soon, and a small rig top handle (using wireless lav for audio), maybe an external monitor (for de-squeezed anamorphic)and minimalist cage. But I’m increasing disinterested in Frankensteining cameras out with add-ons.
@@ItsTomRich I have the Sony A7III and use it predominantly for video but now getting into product images. My lenses are 55mm f1.8 & Tamron 17-28 f2.8. Im thinking of getting the FX30 because of the 4K 120fps as the A7III is 4K 25FPS which really isn’t ideal. But how are pictures compared on the A7III compared to the FX30? Is the A7III much better?
@@ItsTomRich Might I add that due to the downsampled image of the FX30 you might get cleaner and finer details when doing real estate (or fashion/fabrics). The FX6 LPF is pretty strong (but good!) so moiré isn't that much of an issue, but I ran into massive problems with the A7sIII from time to time, which has the same sensor (but no LPF I think?). But Tom is right, there are some beautiful ultra-wide options for Sony fullframe, not sure what you can get these days for APS-C...
They should make these in to handheld camcorder bodies. It’s just awkward to hold without an entire rig and even then it’s not ergonomically designed for run and gun handheld video
Nice review. I just realized that you have the top handle extension on downwards. The grooves that are on the top face downwards to add more grip to the handle. Or did you do that on purpose?
Hey Tom, thanks for the video. Got some questions, What lens did you use in this video. Also would I get similar quality using a6400+18-50mm 2.8 with the exact light setup?
Thanks great video! I have a question if you wanted to take reels and TikTok’s would you pick the iPhone 14 pro or Sony fx30? Coming from a iPhone 12pro user
Great review Tom 👍🏻 I also have the fx6 as main cam and I am searching for a good and small b-Cam 😅 is it a big problem to use all the full frame lenses on the fx30? Best cinematic greetings from 🇩🇪
I mentioned it when I talked about autofocus - my sigma art lens hadn’t been updated so was messing with the AF. It’s fixed now won’t happen in other videos!
Very nice review here. I enjoyed it, as I've been toying with the idea of a FX3 or FX30. Thanks for all the effort that went into making this. Smal suggestion, if I might... next time you might want to lock focus on the FX6... as it was refocusing constantly and the bokeh/blur in the background was dancing all over the place (a bit distracting) -- especially with those blinds.
Hey David- thanks for the nice comment I’m glad you found the video helpful! Yeah unfortunately the focus issue is actually an error with one of my sigma art lenses. But it’s been fixed and won’t Harlem in future videos!
Three famous Sigma primes FX30 Spare ZV-E10 as b-cam or maybe a Gimbal. All that for roughly the same cost as a naked FX3 body. Do with that info what you will.
Great camera by the looks of it (haven’t tried it yet) and obviously way better if you want to shoot stills too. Personally for video only I prefer a cinema focused body especially with the audio top handle
The constant focus shifting in THIS VIDEO is very noticeable and if that is how the FX6 autofocus works than that is practically unusable. I know the FX6 autofocus is very good and thus I assume that the parameters for the autofocus are badly adjusted and secondly that the microphone sticking into the video foreground does not help. It could also be the lens causing this problem. The background tone of the video is skin colour so that does not help either.
You need to pump as much light into the camera as possible. ETTR as much as you can, overexpose to the max (without clipping the highlights of course) and bring exposure down in post, thus lowering the noice floor. It's also quite common to add some NR to the shadows in very flat log footage, even in higher budget productions. But ofc it shouldn't be "unusable"... :-\
True. The caveat is the much slower readout speed of the FX30, whereas the FX3 (FX6, A7s III) are crazy good when it comes to fast pans, whips and action. Theoretically the huge sensels on the FF 1:1 4K chips might do better in terms of dynamic range and low light but that's a give and take and less obvious, I feel, than expected.
What happened to we need FF and everything else is not cinematic 😭 lol 🤣 ah RUclipsrs... Suddenly when it's Sony, it's not an issue hehe. Even the 4k120 is actually a 2.06x crop, while the gh6 is 1.9x and the fx30 footages look so mushy in that mode :(
“Slightly more expensive and slightly more powerful FX3” Good to see our famous understatement in play.
Not sure if it's the FX6's autofocus but the focus pulsing is pretty strong.
Sorry I clarified it later in the video - it was my out of date (firmware) sigma art lens. It’s been fixed and won’t happen any more in future videos!

Which sony camera would you recommend for cinema-grade videography but takes exceptional photos?
Good review! Do you use the Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art DG on the FX30? Do you think this gives a better look than the the Sigma 30mm 1.4 even on APSC?
Super informative! Pretty cool man 🤌🏻

That’s one of the reasons I love the camera, small enough to literally run with nothing attached
It’s a decent low budget camera. The R6 II has a nicer image at a similar price point + canon lenses. But again, for the money it’s solid👊🏽
its way better than R6
Might have to get the FX30 to replace the a7iii

Definitely the FX3 for real estate. You’ll struggle to get super wide on the FX30 because of the crop

Very informative video! Was the focus breathing on your video intentional?
It’s not ficus breathing, it’s an error with outdated firmware on my sigma art lenses. It’s fixed now! Won’t happen next video🫡

Follow focus on non linear focus by wire lens. 🥲
Hey Tom, thanks for the video. Got some questions, What lens did you use in this video. Also would I get similar quality using a6400+18-50mm 2.8 with the exact light setup?
Probably not, I was on an FX6 and a sigma 35mm 1.4 - you’d need a faster lens to get the same level of blur.

technically the Sony fx30 is 6k down to 4k but the fx3 is only 4k so in terms of resolution your getting something better
