There is a big difference between the FX30 and FX3 if you are planning to use the camera for still photography. The FX3 doubles as a full fledge pro photo camera while the FX30 does not. And this is because the FX3 is equipped with both, mechanical and electronic shutter. The FX30 has only an electronic shutter so it is impossible to use flash lights or strobes. Without a mechanical shutter the flash and cam won't sync. While the FX3 can be used for still photography without any limitations.
maybe =)). I think FX30 has the differrent sensor with dual native iso and high dynamic range. XH2 /XH2s and FX30 have highest dynamic range and dual native iso we never see on APS C camera before. Sony just done the new research for thier new sensor
You are absolutely right (Dean), it should have been an a6900, or something else, but not FX. It's a camera to film during the day or with a lot of light. It's even worse in low light than the GH5S (which is crap on the AF side btw). I bought the FX30 together with a sony15mm f1.4 (which in my opinion is the best lens), even with it open at 1.4 it was full of grain, in a room lit by a lamp, i was so so disappointed. I thought at least that dual ISO at 2500 would save me when i shooting in dark places, but no chance.... I was at a wedding and I had to ask the hall managers to leave all the lights on, the chandeliers throughout the whole ballroom, looked like a looser. Even so, many grains can be seen in the shadows. It's for amateur users. I sent it back and ordered another a7SIII. With the a7sIII I shot with all the lights turned off, without grain, that's the difference between an entry level camera and a professional one.
Thank you for the great review. I will definitely buy this camera in addition to my A6600. I was waiting for the A7C Mark II, but the FX30 has everything I need and even more. Great entry level for hobbyist and beginner video makers.

Focus Breathing Compensation is impossible to implement on the A7SIII/FX3 while retaining 4K. That seems to be a comprise Sony’s willing to make. You have to remember that some lenses crop severely to compensate for their focus breathing, and will end up cropping below 8.3MP which is the bare minimum for 4K. Keep in mind that the A7SIII/FX3 both have a 12MP sensor vs. 33MP on the A7IV and 20MP on the FX30. That’s why it’s been almost a year out on the A7IV and hasn’t arrived on the A7SIII/FX3. If you’re hoping that it’ll come then stop hoping, because it won’t.
Thanks thats very useful information. I never used to think focus breathing was a big deal. But recently Ive being noticing it more especially when someone moves a hand and the AF drifts momentarily giving a frame wobble thats distracting
@Jerimiah CK True, but there are caveats with that focus breathing compensation on the FX6. The main story is that it doesn’t do the same type of focus breathing correction. Why? As mentioned before, limits of cropping past 4K do not allow it to fully correct like others. Do a side-by-side test, and place lights on the edges of the frame. The A7IV will keep the same frame, whereas the FX6 will still breathe. Why? Because of the sensor.
@Jerimiah CK No worries, I said impossible when in reality it is technically possible. Thanks for calling me out and challenging my statement. With that said, and although it is technically possible to implement focus breathing compensation on the A7SIII/FX3, it would most certainly be in a crippled way like with the FX6. I wouldn't doubt it worth buying if I didn't already have the S5.
I’m invested in Lumix as well… they are great and there are pros and cons of the Sony… apparently a new S5 is coming soon in 2023… waiting to see what that offers.
I was originally going to the FX3 and upgrade my A7 IV but I'm glad I didn't because the A7 IV matches the FX30 way better. You want to get the A7S III or ZV-E10 with the FX3.
I agree with your reaction, I might get one myself as well, but I don't feel like investing in APSC lenses, so I might just use my full frame lenses on it. I currently own an A7RIII and have been thinking about upgrading to Sony A7IV, as I've been mainly doing video lately. But maybe getting this and keeping my current A7RIII over replacing it for the IV might be the right call, what do you think?
@@daniellove162 That is true, and I might consider to get one or two, but I just have so many full frame lenses that getting their replacements in APSC just doesn't make sense really.
@@richardshaw7449 That's a good suggestion and the A7R5 sounds great, though like I said in my initial comment - even though I focus mainly on photography, most of my client work in the recent months is just videos, as they are getting more and more popular. That's why I'm considering the Sony FX30.
@@DannyNobody - I have an R5 yet I’m considering selling it all and getting the FX30. With a great ASCP camera your lenses are MUCH smaller and cheaper. Most of the shooting I do is alone so having a small footprint is great. If I have a more expensive client I can just hire an operator with a better camera to crew up with. If I was to get the canon version (a C70) it costs almost $6,000 and RF lenses are not as plentiful and more money for cropped sensors. By the way, Full frame is overrated. Having a sharp focus with an ASPC camera is NEVER a problem for clients. It’s only a problem for DPs who think highly of themselves.
I have done side by side comparisons with the GH6 in low light. Can Sony get more detail out of the shadows at high ISO, and less noise? Yes, but the GH6 processes the images with a more natural looking image. There is a lot of digital blooming on the Fx, and artificial push/look and feel. If that is what you want, then awesome...buy one. But for me I prefer the look of the GH6 in low light...let the haters comments begin...lol

Thanks for the video! Would you choose fx30 or a7iv for video? I'm a little bit confused by the video quality of fx30 (fx3, a7iv, a7siii look way better)

I know real estate videos is not your space (at least that I know/seen on your channel) how do you feel about the low light performance? Thinking about getting this for my video work, centered around RE Videos. Let me know your thoughts.
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k is a much better option for people who want to have a real filmmaking experience (Real 24fps, false color, beautiful focus peaking, shutter angel, 12 bits Braw, Apple Prores, Davinci Resolve Licence, etc). The Fx30 is more for people concerned about autofocus and ibis (People who work in events, weddings, and travels). I don't know how Sony called "Cinema Camera" a camera that doesn't can record properly at 24fps, doesn't have a shutter angle function, no False colors, etc. The fx30 is a good camera but is not a better Cinema camera than a BMPCC6k. BTW: I have a Sony a7sIII and I only use it for events.
It is in their cinema line for the philosophy behind it, not necessarily just the features. Some of the features are basically things like s-cinetone and 10 bit, which you generally don't find on lower priced (aps-c) cameras. The footage is made much more for being graded than other cameras. Some features that come from the fx3 can only be found on their cinema line and not even on higher end FF cameras. Ergonomically made for video as well with the lack of viewfinder. It is basically an entry level model that doesn't break the bank but preps users to move to the fx3, fx6, etc... line of sony cameras. while it is not a full cinema experience it is a gateway into their more expensive cinema line. Can't just see it as a standalone camera. With the price it is also well priced to get people into their ecosystem because other brands have cinema entry level cameras that are too expensive for many people who want to get started in cinema style video recording. Once they get the fx30 it is more likely that when they upgrade they will stay with sony rather than switch (until they move on to even bigger ones like Reds or arris)
@@travelthroughart Thank you! It's only the reality without the "youtuber marketing". For me, the pocket 4k keeps been an amazing camera, with and amazing codec and a beautiful image. Keep Filming!
man.. I should've fking waited. I have gone from Nikon D3200 to the Sony A6400 (I fking love it. it's such a huge difference!) but now I see this.. I should've waited 😭😭
Definitely not 1.4, apply the crop factor but this is a highly debatable subject. Light wise, a crop 1.4 is definitely darker than using in a full frame aspect.
Do you think this is Sony's effort to do with Cinema focussed cameras, what they did for mirrorless photo cameras with the original a7iii? It seems they are throwing all their latest tech at it and then offering it at an insanely competitive price. Is this their 'land grab' moment in the affordable cinema camera market? What do you think?
Thx for your review. I don‘t know if this question was ever mentioned by someone, but is it possible to swap the top handle around? I mean, can I use the handle with all its audio features from my FX3 on the FX30?
Is working autofocus when external monitor is connected? My a6400 doesn't :( On a6400 is working only when is recording through hdmi to external hard drive. I
Nice video, but the argument that Sony doesn't add features to older cameras to try to make you buy the new cameras doesn't make sense. That camera is $1800 and has the focus breathing comp, and the A1 doesn't have it, but it costs $6500. Why would Sony not try to push people to buy more A1 instead, where Sony makes a lot more profit? See what I mean? The reason is simply: firmware updates are not as easy as we think. Not just to program but especially to test, the last thing you want is to brick the camera, and we saw recently there was an issue with an A7iv update. The update needs to work without resetting the settings, so the testing must be done with a lot of pre existing combinations of settings. For a new camera, it's not an issue, since the initial firmware has the default settings, so there's a lot less testing involved.
Just ordered one. 4K 120 is what i was waiting for to upgrade my a6400 and I will get so much more pro features. Can’t wait to receive it.
How is it now?
Finally Something That I can Afford.. Thank you SONY.. 😍

Thanks for your hard work on the video. Does the fx30 use the apsc battery or full frame??
Best 'video' camera under $2000 is Lumix S5; with the advantages over this FX30 being full frame sensor and a full-fledge stills camera as well. I know your challenge was rhetorical, but hey you 'asked'! LOL!
I’m so glad someone brought this up! S5 has been so underrated and deserves so much for the features its got
Thanks for the video! Would you choose fx30 or a7iv for video? I'm a little bit confused by the video quality of fx30 (fx3, a7iv, a7siii look way better)
Not a professional, but the A7IV has terrible rolling shutter, so definitely the FX30. Both can shoot 4k60, but they both have a crop applied
@@DroopyPenguin95 Rolling shutter on the fx30 is not much better. A7iv looks better to me in low light and better dynamic range. I say a7iv.
@@CO8848_2 go watch Gerald Undone's video at about 3 min and 5 sec
@@DroopyPenguin95 if you can see, that footage shows it's not much better, duh. Unusable, period.
Sony a7iv better …
That you for your video!
What about fx-30 xlr handle and teleprompter?
Do you have option to setup both together?
amazing review 👍🙏
What tips would you have for someone new to Sony, like me, who picked up this camera?
Any opinion between what the best option is between the FX30 vs S52 vs R8? I’ll be shooting jiu jitsu videos, no corporate work. Thank you for any input.
Where do you get those crisp T-Shirts from bro?
Manny compare it with the canon c70 !!!!☺️
How do you white balance so well outside, what are your settings?
I know real estate videos is not your space (at least that I know/seen on your channel) how do you feel about the low light performance? Thinking about getting this for my video work, centered around RE Videos. Let me know your thoughts.
Dude nice vid, nice info bit the background clicky music I cany bear it man. Too loud for this vid BTW.
Hopefully the upgraded BSI APSC sensor gets ported to the new a6x00 cameras.
Recommendation for a good run and gun lens for the FX30? I'm Z9 user, but was looking to get an FX30 for a side camera for video work.
Thank you I was just coming here for this comment! Although I only have a Pocket 4K I love it :)
@@JosePortillo Thanks man you too ;)
All facts
Maybe this will be the final nail in the coffin of the M4/3 line of cameras/lenses?
FS7 > FX30.
You can't change my mind.
man.. I should've fking waited. I have gone from Nikon D3200 to the Sony A6400 (I fking love it. it's such a huge difference!) but now I see this.. I should've waited 😭😭
If it has a 6k sensor, why is there no 6k internal recording option? It has active cooling so surely 6k 24/25p should be an option?
If I used the Sony 15mm F1.4 and then used clear image zoom (the rocker switch) what would be the Fstop equivalent fullfame.
Definitely not 1.4, apply the crop factor but this is a highly debatable subject. Light wise, a crop 1.4 is definitely darker than using in a full frame aspect.
I assume you can't shoot ocf with the fx30?
I need this camera🤤
Why not buy a BMPCC 6K (apart from the autofocus)
Great video.
I totally thought APSC was dead after the ZV-E10 😅 I was wrong.
2300 USD for a 4K video Cam: No thank you: In fuji we trust. Same price Fuji X2 8K: no brainer
@7:15 can you show us the rolling shutter compared to fx3?
Is this camera $1800 exclusively in the US,? I can only find it for 2399€ in my country!
Sigma FP has 4k Cinema DNG Raw and is only 1500
Hi..did you had horizontal bandings whith photos because of having only electronic shutter ? Thanks
cosa ne pensi ad oggi rispetto la Panasonic Lumix S5II?
I can change your mind. I will buy a Sony Venice 2 with an 8K sensor, a Red V-Raptor XL, and a Arri Alexa 35 and sell then all for $1999.99.
You should have put on the Sigma 16mm on it.. that’s what I want to see
What are those circular modifiers you got? The ones with the white circles?
