Elgato Cam Link 4K vs Cheap 1080p Capture Card with Canon M50 Mark II Comparison

- I wanted to put this video together to compare how a cheaper capture card alternative compares to the Elgato Cam Link 4K when used with a Canon M50 Mark II. This video was shot at 1080p 60fps with both capture cards. I also included a video using the Canon USB Webcam Utility software which as I mentioned previously is much poorer quality.
The actual $30 capture card alternative I am using for this video is below,

This was exactly what I was looking for, super helpful.
Glad it was helpful for you!
This is exactly what I was looking for.
Nice video !
Glad I could help!
The audio sync is better with the Elgato. Thanks for doing this! Blessings
No problem. Glad you enjoyed the video!
good video man, keep pushing. congrats, I'm your 100th sub!
Thanks for the sub!
Great comparison. The generic card is a little more saturated but I believe color correction can be fixed on the camera (like the Canon M50). For $30 vs $130, I will definitely pick one up with your link. thanks for creating this!
Glad I could help, thanks for the good question on my original video posting.
Your contribution is great thanks!... but before I was almost sure about elgato, now I dont know what to do haha
I see the difference between the 2, but the cheap one does not look bad at all...
Yea I agree with you. I don’t think it’s a huge difference.
Thanks for the video Steve. I've been streaming on RUclips using Streamyard and my iphone. It's worked great, but only in 720p. I just bought a canon m40 mark ii but trying to see what I'd need in order to stream on youtube using obs in 1080p with no lag and have a clean HDMI (so not seeing all the stuff on the screen when I stream.) Is this possible?
So i think i seen on one of your other videos when you are recording talking head videos for youtube or other forms of social media. You are using the capture card AND the webcam utility software both? Then you are recording it via obs? Would be cool if you made a video your process of recording videos for youtube. By the way video quality is much much better then the first video i watched. I subscribed to your channel.
Thank you. That’s a great idea and I will see if I can put a video together on that later. This has been a big learning process for me as I discover better lighting techniques, video improvements and audio adjustments to keep tweaking it. The other video you are mentioning used zero lighting and the video quality suffered as a result.
@@SteveWinward i appreciate it the only knowledge i have are from videos like yours. I have not yet recieved the cam yet. So i been trying to prepare as best a possible in advance.
Great work, does the sound come through the HDMI when you are streaming?
Hey Mark, yes the sound does come through the HDMI when streaming. Full disclosure, the built in microphone on the Canon M50 Mark II is pretty terrible. You'd want to have a microphone plugged into the camera mic jack if you did that setup. The alternative that I do is I use a Blue Yeti X which is a USB microphone. I mute the camera audio in OBS and record only the Yeti microphone input. Hope this helps!
@@SteveWinward I was hoping this would be the case. Thanks
If I use a capture card with the M50 Can I use the shotgun microphone audio attached to the camera? Or do I have to buy a separate mic? Thanks!
The capture card will carry both the audio signal and the video signal. So if you connect the microphone to the camera the audio signal will come through. I use a Blue Yeti X USB microphone so when I record I just mute audio signal from the capture card and use the signal from the USB microphone.
Does it have unlimited runtime and clean HDMI? As I want to be able to use it for a few hours a day as a webcam and I'm wondering if it turns off after a while and if the output is clean with auto focus
Yes. The mark II has unlimited runtime if you use a dummy battery. I’ve been using this setup for over a year and have been on Teams calls for several hours at a time without any issues. It’s also clean hdmi output with the mark II!
@@SteveWinward thank you so much! 🙏
What tripod or mounting system are you using for the camera?
I use a SMALLRIG clamp to attach to the back stand on my monitor.

I also use a quick release mount on top of the SMALLRIG to make it easy to remove the camera quickly.

I just purchased the M50 MARK 2, does it work really well with cam link it kinda collecting dust rn
I use the Elgato Cam Link 4K and it works really well. The quality of the video feed from a capture card versus the canon web cam utility software is so much better.
@@SteveWinward Okay, appreciate it brother!
Did you need a separate cable to connect the mk2 to the elgato? Or did the one that come with the cam link work.
Yes. I needed to buy a micro HDMI to HDMI cable to plug into the Elgato cam link.
@@SteveWinward thanks a bunch
@@SteveWinward Do you remember which cable you got? The one I purchased wouldn't detect the microHDMI at all even after unplugging and replugging it into my Mark II :/
@@JonGon005 search on Amazon for "UGREEN Micro HDMI to HDMI Cable Adapter 4K 60Hz Ethernet Audio Return Channel Compatible with GoPro Hero 7/6 Raspberry Pi 4 Retroid Pocket 2+ Yoga 3 B500 Sony A6000 Camera Video Capture Card 10FT"
I have a Canon M50 and the 1080p capture card but my M50 auto turns off after a couple minutes. Fix?
The fix is to make sure you have the usb cable connected to your laptop and you have the canon EOS Utility software installed. Once you do that the software overrides the auto shut off feature of the camera. I don’t know if that works with the M50 vs the M50 Mark II that I have.
@@SteveWinward Awesome thanks! 🙏
@@SteveWinward great tip! so if you have the software installed, and USB connected, but you use HDMI in to the capture card to actually record/stream the feed, then it won't turn off after 30 minutes?
@@sureshkhirwadkar that’s correct. I’ve had Microsoft Teams meeting for several hours and never had the video cut out.
Also you will need a dummy battery to keep power to the camera. Otherwise the rechargeable battery on the camera will eventually run out of power.
