      Only other duo I loved were Cannon & Ball as they were different. Everyone else were poor second class copies.

      Or you don't know what comedy truly is. I for one will always love Laurel and Hardy and I thank my grandmother and even though she wasn't related to us she was a family friend of ours and she was the best friend of my grandmother. They are the reason I love Laurel and Hardy. I even watched a movie called Stan and Ollie and I give credit to the BBC for making a movie about these two legendary comedians. Charlie Chaplin and Buster they may be hilarious but Laurel and Hardy knew how to do comedy and I'm pretty sure this was the inspiration that led up to comedians such as Mel Brooks and possibly Andy Kaufman. But there was also a very favorite memory of mine in regards to the Munsters. As a child I used to watch The Munsters with my grandmother and it would also be a few times I watch it by myself and I remembered we had this old television set and we used to find TV Land and I would never miss an episode of The Munsters. I guess I never wanted to miss an episode and I possibly got that from my uncle from my mother's side because when he my mother and my aunt were little my uncle would always pick up my mother and my aunt from school and they'd run home and he would put on his favorite television show that he never missed at all in his life and that was Adam West Batman. But my point is television from the 50s and the 60s are never meant to be forgotten. But also let's not forget the twenties thirties and forties because the early to mid twentieth century was a great era for Hollywood. And there will never ever be another comedian that can live up to the expectations that Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy had when they were alive but their inspiration lives on through countless Generations that know the meaning of Comedy and we must remember that comedy is subjective but it is that subjectiveness that makes people laugh. As the late Gene Wilder once said "So shines a good deed in a weary world."

    • @joansmith6092
      @joansmith6092 5 лет назад +1

      David Lape No, I don't believe they ever broke up. His stooges went to a separate studio, while Ted Healy stayed at MGM. There's an MGM movie called Hollywood Party, I think it was made in 1936, that shows Healy and his stooges together again, but for only a brief time, even though they are with Columbia from then on, since 1934 (Harry Cohn was calling them his good luck charms around that time).

    Im a die hard Laurel and Hardy fan since the age of 5. Thats over 50 years ago. I didnt know weather to see this because it obviously wasnt the original cast, and i couldnt picture someone else ever filling their shoes. But my god what an excellent film it is. Both actors were incredible and for me John Reilly excelled, as Oliver hardy. Thats not to say Steve Coogan wasnt way less impressive, because this was the best performance of his acting career. Im no softy, but i was sobbing like a child at the end, and i defy anyone not to shed a tear after watching this all the way through. To put it simply, the film and actors deserve every award going for what is a masterpiece. Absolutely superb.

      You big softy.
      I did well to hold any tears back watching this film but my eyes were a bit watery I must admit at the cinema, my wife could see I was getting fidgety and she was thinking what the bloody hell... unfortunately she didn't really appreciate it that much (maybe a tiny bit) as she didn't grow up watching Laurel and Hardy and other old classics, whereas I did occasionally. I did however show her a few short films/clips of theirs to get a better understanding, rather than going in blind. Best film I had seen in a long while and most certainly in later/recent times, post 2010.

    The sets too are beyond perfection. It is all detail and class, I will watch for more from this director

    Finally saw this on the big screen Stateside. No kiss-and-tell or effects-laden barnburner this. Messrs Laurel and Hardy have long been a mixed bag for me though I regard the affection publicly displayed for them as genuine, and there's no disputing their contributions. "Based on a true story"? Perhaps. Let's just say I reserve the highest praise for the acting, the leads in particular. You very quickly reach the point of regarding their performances as more than just impressions or caricatures. In short, you BELIEVE them. And in today's acting environment that can only charitably be regarded as fickle that is high praise indeed.

    • @LFD254
      @LFD254 5 лет назад

      Agreed. I just saw the movie tonight and within minutes I was carried away by the performances. Coogan and Reilly BECOME Laurel and Hardy and the genuine bond the originals had is equally presented by Steve and John. I found myself wishing they'd done more routines and particularly liked the Robin Hood clip, so poignant when you know it was one of many routines Stan wrote for he and Ollie long after Hardy was gone

      There WAS a movie about the Three Stooges and it was brilliant. The Farrelly brothers made it a few years back and the got the characters to a tee. I remember thinking at the time, if someone could just make a Stan and Ollie movie and capture the same essence as the Farrelly bros did with the Stooges it would be great.

    The contract disagreement with Hal Roach led to a brief paring of Babe Hardy with Harry Langdon. That could have worked because in many ways, Langdon's on-screen persona was not unlike Stan Laurel's. Of course, even if successful it would not have lasted long because Langdon died in 1944.

    • @mrsbrownandhercat
      @mrsbrownandhercat 5 лет назад +1

      Correct. There was no disagreement between Stan and Ollie over this, so the central basis of this movie, as shown in the trailer, is a lie. It misleads everyone about the relationship, and offends fans who know the truth. There is a campaign among fans to boycott this movie for the travesties it contains.

      @@mrsbrownandhercat It is never prudent to rely on the movies for history lessons. Movie scripts emphasize "drama," and drama is enhanced by conflict, real or imagined. I think I'll enjoy the movie, fully cognizant that it is just a movie. However, I understand why the contrived conflict might grind your gears. About twenty years ago, I watched a German movie called "The Harmonists," about a great Weimar era singing group, the Comedian Harmonists. I know a lot about the group and the period in which the movie is set and that script STILL pisses me off if I think about it.

Brought back so many memories of my childhood in the 70s a 80s where L&H were constantly on TV. Its a shame more effort isn't made to keep these shows on our television....having 24/7 access online is no excuse not to repeat these on TV.
