When I played "On a Rail" and this was playing, it really drove home the reality for Gordon at that moment. The HECU have rounded up or killed most of his collegues by now, they're after him alone, and he's got a long, hard journey to the Lambda Complex. This track felt like Gordon was giving a hefty sigh as the tram went along and he was steeling himself for the long road ahead.
Steeling
You are right about the long road
@@fallout1550 Honestly? I loved this level as a kid in the OG game. And this one is just as fun.

@@whatthefuhdhe7727 your comment hurt me more
just listening to this while thinking about the injured guard saying “ill just slow you down” gets me
That line was heartbreaking TBH
In the original it's kinda goofy... He walks like 2 steps and falls over
Doesn't help that even if you bring him a medkit he still doesn't get up.
@@DiggerDeeper01 i tried that too
@@DiggerDeeper01, I even manage to bring like 3 med kits and an SMG for more defence percentage to him, do not worry maybe he can use them after we start our 'On a rail' adventure
Whenever there's a lull in the gameplay, like at the beginning of a chapter (not you surface tension), or just after a vista, I usually absentmindedly check and reload every weapon while taking everything in.
This song at the beginning of On A Rail gave a whole different vibe to that. I felt like Gordon, letting out a sigh as he slots another magazine in the MP5, remembering that this isn't a nightmare, and pumping the shotgun just before he puts it away and rests his hand on the train controls, as he reaches the bottom and begins his journey *ON A RAIL* .
It is so rare that a soundtrack in a game pushes you further into the experience, but this song in that moment actually changed my mood. I could feel it affecting me. It was almost creepy.
actually its not such a rare thing if u pay attention to details by what, why and how your mood and experience gets affected while you are playing good games. in movies and games, actually everywhere, soundtracks haves a very BIG influence on you and your soul. Even in real life the ambiance of the nature or your surroundings in that glorious moment of your life makes it way bigger and stronger. At least 50 percent (AS MINIMUM!) ambiance, music and sounds haves the influence on you.
But dont get me wrong, this song is really a masterpiece!
It's a sad song ...
Exactly, it's the most memorable song from Black Mesa for me. I like to return to this song and with every play of it, I feel the same, like Gordon being alone in the tunnels... Not many songs affect me so much as this one
Exactly like Sirens In The Distance!
"I'll just slow you down..."
I drope a medikit to him but he didn t use it... I hope he use it to get out of there...
I wanted to shoot him so badly
Alyssumi i felt bad for that guy
Sve 64 Felt even worse in the original for me because I imagined every one of those guards as Barney, Gordon's friend.
Just like..., irreversible sadness. 😭😭😭😭😭
I particularly like this song for the beginning of On A Rail, because it fits the resigned and melancholy feeling of realising you have to play through On A Rail.
They did a great job sprucing it up in BM, though, it's honestly one of my favourite chapters in the remake, especially with the Definitive Edition updates.
LMAO
@@mythsqueuemusicWhat?
I was re-playing this game, again, for like the millionth time yesterday and when I got up to "On a Rail", this song just hit me right on DA FEELZ. Seriously. In the part where the injured guard tells you he'll just slow you down, and tells you to keep going so you leave and the other guard helps you but says he'll stay in case anyone else needs help, when the tram is going down, this started playing and I just looked back thinking in my head: "Dammit, you're not gonna make it" (the guard who helped), and as the tram was going down I saw a dead security guard; blood everywhere, AND THIS DAMN SONG STILL PLAYING. It's just so damn sad, but captures Half-Life's masqueraded tragic darkness so well. It's amazing what Joel Nielsen has done for Black Mesa.
A.M. Arteaga Yeah, This song and the Black Mesa Theme Remix that plays once you leave the test chamber, you watch seeing all the people suffer in pain, It's just such a powerful scene. I think the way Black Mesa gave souls and characteristics to the people made it alot more sad to see them die.
It's amazing how this a free mod (and now a paid standalone game), and yet they gave this game the gameplay and soundtrack of a AAA title. It's just freaking beautiful.
Whenever I play this game, and leave guards or scientists behind, I become really upset, knowing that I've done everything I can for them to ensure their safety, but even if they don't get killed by the military or aliens, they'll still die in the nuclear explosion set off by the G-Man. This song perfectly captures the feeling of helplessness and sadness Gordon must feel in the back of his mind.
A.M. Arteaga this song has so many nostalgic memories for me...when I was 12 I played this game with my brother in Autumn (he played and I watched) and since then I'm playing this game every autumn.
When I hear the music I always remember how my brother and me played it, watched series and how I later played it with my cousin.
I really wish I were 12 again just to repeat this time!
Now this is 6 years ago already!
Yeah, the game really is amazing, not only with that guard, but also with scientist who die. And when they die I think: Sh*t I wanted to save them.
(Slows down the train to listen to the music)
Me: Ahhhhh
(Marines and turrets start shooting at me)

This level and music was where I stopped and fully realized how much Black Mesa is doing better than the original. The tone shift is dramatic, and the divergence from the original game into unexplored territory becomes manifest here.
“I would go down there myself...but there’s things..in the way”

I feel you, they used it in a very good place, when you know a lot about what's happening, but, in reality, you still don't know much.
The theme of trying to keep a purple hat on a moving tram

We seriously need more Half Life games, not only sequel, prequel or anytime in half life universe, maybe you can play as one of the Rebels escaping City 17
Or a game that continues Shephard's story.
Jorge Reyes agreed. It's like they don't care.
Jorge Reyes I want a game where you play as Kleiner when he's with Eli. Eli got his leg eaten by a bullsquid, so they could make a cutscene like that. And a 7 hour war game with Shephard!
Thomas Lane Valve said that they haven't forgotten Shepherd, so there is still hope.
Don't you guys think that Valve make alot of money everyday?? with steam and stuff... still they don't use the fucking money to make Half life games
I love the sort of melancholy feel of
on a rail
and this song fits perfectly with it
That's it, I'm playing this at my Local Subway train
I remember my night shifts in a factory when I listened to this song, I could barely see the sunlight and I had to make overtime. I assume Gordon would lose the sense of time especially he was trapped beneath the facility and the last time he had seen the daylight/surface was a brief moment in the chapter We've got Hostiles. The game is a perfect masterpeace and it even scares me thinking all those portal storms after the incident, and Combine had destroyed the whole continent to put an end to biotic overrun via frenzied teleportation with the destruction of Nihilanth.
OMG I just realized the beginning of this song and the 1:09 part of Inbound 1 sound the same! And in both chapters, you're "on a rail"! That's a cool reference I noticed.
and that is how to utilize motifs in music 👍
This kinda feels like Gordon's waking up to another day in the BM incident, trying to convince himself he's not going insane, and then continuing on
I like to imagine Gordon taking a break after each chapter, because what he goes through must be exhausting.
I don't think Gordon gone crazy he didn't even kill innocent people so there's that. He didn't become psychopath in HL2, he was normal.
@@gottagofastfaster Just because Gordon isn't a psychopath doesn't mean that he can't be going insane. At the end of HL1, he would probably have PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, and Trust Issues. The man goes through so many tragedies, is responsible for so many deaths, and in general goes through hell and back.
@@connorgolsong290 well I guess that's true but at least in my perspective he isn't a crazy doctor who go shoot everyone and be not friendly to citizen's in example of Half Life 2, but at least I agree a man who isn't a soldier can be confused, scared and vomit because of those scientist deaths.
@@gottagofastfaster Yeah, Gordon isn't a psychopath, but he very well isn't sane.
You know it when the game is so immersive that I want to drag that guard to somewhere safe, I even dragged like 5 people from the Office Complex to the elevator shaft and got saddened because they can't reach the bloody ladder.
Thats nothing i dragged 6 people with me.
Black Mesa=On a Rail 1
Half Life 2=Triage at Dawn
Half-Life = Closing theme/Tracking device
triage at dawn is "let me play you a sad song on the worlds smallest violin"
I like Power Up from Black Mesa and most Xen music
And CP violation from Half Life 2
Half-Life 1: Electric Guitar Ambiance
The very beginning of this music sounds like the intro to a rap/hip-hop song, and I find that absolutely amazing.
Easily one of the most emotionally appealing songs in the OST.
idk if its just me but i feel kinda broken listening to this, it relives the feels and u kind of wonder around in the game that these parts these labs these departments sooner or later are all going to be abandoned and no one will know what remains of black mesa, people who are waiting for their collegues you wonder whether they will make it or not, all of the expensive equipment all of black mesa is going to be abandoned and trashed, all the workers scientists and guards who died, their families will never get to see them come home. Im sorry if this is too much but i have a habit of playing a game with a proper story and care for the surrounding as well as the character and his history.
And the best part, that explosion is canon.
7 years later and this soundtrack is still awesome! Also, I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but I love the way the mod uses cinematic timing. The chapter title scrolls onto the screen when the tram elevator hits the bottom and this song hits around 0:30 all at the same time. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but it makes for a pretty powerful effect.
This music gives you that feeling that like, all of this death and destruction you've caused was partly Gordans fault.... makes you kinda sad
Yeah I know, but it makes you even more sad, what's about to happen after the black mesa incident... 7 Hours War, then the Combine Occupation for 10 years.... It's gonna get worse before it gets better.
Well Densel think of it like this gordon thinks its his fault but the real man responsible is Wallace Breen so play half-life 2 and kick his ass ;)
None of it is Gordon's fault. He was just following orders, as it was Dr. Breen who chose to command his employees to ignore safety protocols and ignore the safety buffer zone, as well as ignore their warnings... G-Man gave him the sample and persuaded him to turn the power up to 105% (safety buffer zone is below 90%); he gave him the tools, Breen decided to use them. It's all his fault. That stupid old man! :L
+Densel Moore its not freeman's fault its the black mesa mayor he plant it
+Densel Moore Well there is definitely some blame to be put on gordon, he was part of it. But Gordon has gone above and beyond to fix what happened and save as many as possible. So ill say that redeemed gordon. One man against impossible odds even with an HEV suit.
usually i would just put the trains on fast mode cuz of how long on a rail was in the original half life
now i have the train on a slow pace so i can listen to this beautiful music
I feel so small when i'm listening to your work and when i'm thinking about how much you've been striving to achieve all this...
Astonishing is not enough to explain this
Yea, how many times have we heard that before? Remember the 2009 release date?
11 years later...
First time i heard 6 years ago.
wow
What a masterpiece the whole soundtrack of Black Mesa is..I love it a lot and I still remember first time i heard this I teared.Thank you for creating this!
Hearing the Injured Guard on Power Up and this playing soon after, I feel bad for him...(I know it's a video game, but the emotion is strong) When he said "I'll just slow you down" I didn't care, I was willing to help him but he chose to stay behind (Even though he was injured), so I gave him two medkits for himself, and slowly drove away on the cart, as I stared at him when leaving...
You know, video game NPCs may not all be real, but....his emotion....was strong to me... He felt like a real person.
I would love to see an animatic for Black Mesa songs like these.
Still shots mixed with with subtle animation just...relaying the mood in the story.
Like the top comment about gordon sighing as the tram slowly pushes forward.
This is brilliant music for a game. Its hard to top half lifes sound track, because it manages to intersperse the game play moments well enough that it doesnt interrupt game play and actually adds to the experience. And black mesa, with this sound track, did just that.
It's nostalgia.. I played Black Mesa in 2012.. 9 Years ago..
Play the Definite Version with Xen.
The melancholy, the loneliness, and how Gordon is alone and there is no one who can accompany him gives a raw feeling.
Music suits the mood for walking down new york on a rainy down going pass streets and allyways
I imagine. I've never been to the Northeast (let alone NYC), but I can see that.
Truth ive never been to the east coast so sorry for the inconvenience
(i have bad grammar)
CaptainDoge X It's OK.
New york’s hot as hell, and humid af when it rains
This track just feels... cold
nah this track fits being in a nyc subway train at night
Who thought riding a freight tram would feel so melancholic with this theme.
Yeah, On A Rail is such an emotional chapter for being so deserted. Between the atmosphere, the environments, and the guard that dies for you in the silo, this chapter hits hard.
@@connorgolsong290 It's as deserted as the rest of the older parts of the Black Mesa Research Facility which were from the 60's/70's, and probably remained operational until the early 80's. The old rail tunnels, the rocket test labs, and the A-17 Prototype Labs for example, and you can even see the older Intellitech Mk.5 medkits stashed around. We never get to see more of the Old Black Mesa though. Although there is a fan-made HL1 interpretation of the Old Black Mesa in the mod Half-Life: Azure Sheep.
@@Alex_Guy1011 Old Black Mesa is so cool. It's like those chapters you spend in Old Aperture in Portal 2. I love seeing the older parts of the facility in Blue Shift. It's so cool.
@@connorgolsong290 Yep, gives off the same feeling like the Test Shaft 09 in Portal 2. Dial phones on switch boards, tape drive machines, and a bunch of other stuff.
@@Alex_Guy1011 I love that kind of vibe.
the most hated chapter becomes less hated with this.
On a rail may be the first "bad" chapter, but DAMN the soundtrack is good for it.
i like this song
i know
This is actually a Gordon Freeman's theme... So beautiful and dramatic...
Maybe on a rail was a moment when freeman realises what has happened also this is a perfect song to announce the arrival of the Combine
I'm going on something people will hate me for here, I really hate what they did with Half-Life 2. The Combine was just...really?
DragonHunter1121 Well,CMB actually had a lot of units for example Cremator,Alien Soldier,Alien Assasin and many-many others.Valve cut all of those npc's so i agree, combine was just like HECU rework for HL2.
I liked the combine as it showed it wasnt just alien wild life that took intrest in our planet. There are other races that are smart and organised, and are a bigger threat than bullsquids
Pure Nostalgic ❤😌
This captures the spirit of the late 90's and early 2000's so well, I cant begin to describe why
Only trouble about this track placement is that there's a room to the left with shotgun shells in it when you get down the elevator, so I immediately stop thinking "Oh man, I love this song so much..." and start thinking "Gotta grab some ammo." Really ruins the mood. I'd much rather cruise down the ruined tram system at the lowest gear, but no, can't leave that ammo there XD.
you know i kinda agree with your point, but thank you for telling me about the shotgun ammo because it helped me on my hard mode run
I just straight up ignore it and head down the track. You really don't need it, as there's ammo in the control room of the first puzzle.
Ah, how this makes me remember the pain of leaving the guard behind as he activated the train.
It hurt, badly
when you go down the hole thingy at the start with this music fits really well. This is on of my favorite tracks.
When I hear this.. I can't help but to think about that Guard you left behind who told you how to turn the power back on. Imagine.. If this happened real life. Just what he would be thinking. I hated leaving him behind. Just hearing this song makes me imagine the terror and chaos of the whole event. Loved the game. This mod advanced the atmosphere to a whole new level. With the music and all.
one of my favorite moments in this game is when you reach the bottom of the elevator and "On A Rail" pops up, then you continue your lonely journey deeper into the facility
This is Triage at Dawn for Black Mesa. The feels man
On a Rail is just how the game begins and ends on a rail, also explains how the rail is linear and gives you no liberty to choose.
This fit PERFECTLY. When I took the elevator down at the beginning off On a rail, This started playing and stopped everything to listen to it.
Joel, you are very talented. Soundtrack of the year, man.
WHY HAS NOBODY MADE A REMIX OF THIS? THIS IS SUCH A GREAT SONG BUT NOBODY HAS MADE A REMIX FOR IT, PLEASE PEOPLE

Yep, me too
I seriously question if Joel was trying to make a soundtrack for this game and the HL2 beta, cause some of these tracks fit perfectly into the HL2 beta, sometimes to the point that it feels uncanny
This really does sound like something from Half-Life. Love it.
Can we take a moment to remember the legendary guard who knew he was going to die but still helped Gordon defeat that big thing. (I don't remember it's name.)
Gargantua
It's alright Gordon, this is the last stop, the last small bit of time you'll have to cry for the rest of your shift at Black Mesa.
The best song of Black Mesa soundtrack ever
One of the best songs in the soundtrack by far imo.
Heavy metro 2033 vibes, perfect for a tunnel level, amazing job!
Makes you think of all the scientists who died because this song is quite sad

With this track, I get the impression that Gordon is exhausted. The fear, desperation, and the basic instinct for survival has taken a toll on him mentally, and he only gets a few moments in the tunnel to catch his breath.
But at the same time, he knows that if he stops to rest longer than even a minute, that things will only get worse, so he must press on.
Whenever I hear this song, I feel like I'm actually in Black Mesa trying to escape the incident just as you are in the game.
Something about this feels like Mac Quayle's music for Mr. Robot meets Kelley Bailey's music for Half-Life- _I never knew how well those two could be mixed together_
Mainly the background bass and soft piano at the beginning reminds me a lot of the Mr. Robot OST, then the other half with the main piano and lighter drum backing feels a lot like Half-Life....I dunno, maybe it's just me
Definitely the best of all the songs in the game Black Mesa.
There's a catch. It's releasing without Xen.
You only had to wait 5, not 7, thankfully.

It's here
Let's gooo
ITS OUT
To be honest, i get scared a little playing Black Mesa without the NPCs around xD
Because you're all alone trying to figure out how to escape and then fucking G-Man stares at your face.
It's creepy but not that creepy
In "Forget About Freeman" or "Surface Tension" when I saw the gargantua in the tunnel I almost wet myself XD
I am not Russian but I understand most of your comment, and I have to say, I almost nearly teared up while hearing this track.
It is, I have played black mesa for 5 times already, I just love the experience, the storyline just everything
for me this and surface tension 2 are the best
this song makes me hate on a rail less
this song gives me the memory from this chapter, when I was driving that tram and suddendly there were on rail 2 mines and some other trams, so I had to go through the door on right, then I saw the dead guard in blood and I saw, that words 'DIE FREEMAN' were wrote with that guys blood. ;-;
No, thats was a black spray. Actually you can see the can on the floor.
Nothing beats the feeling this game gives you as you slowly descend the tram elevator with this song playing, suddenly reaching the bottom as *ON A RAIL* lights up on your screen.
I LOVE this song,is my favoritos
There's a recent interview of him with Christopher Odds and Joel explains that he wanted to make the songs turn out like that. Depending on how you played... most of the songs would end perfectly within the environment... which is cool. :)
Quit being modest, Mr. Nielsen. You've earned all of the praise you got.
This music kicks in when you realise that you're no longer a theoretical physicist, but a mass murderer.
0:01 "Beep" *loud Tram engine turns on*
