Shotokan is traditional Japanese karate. It transfers well to MMA if your a stand up fighter but you’ll also need a strong ground game to go with it which is unusual if your used to being a stand up karate style fighter
So good to have the technique breakdown! Much appreciated, I already have muay thai and karate form down pat but this is slightly unique to what I know.

Big fan. One quick question for ya. Is it better to practice kicks and kick thrownin a full range of kicking motion or, is it better to kick and focus on a quick retract to reset back in your stance?
Will you be doing Bunkai and how you've applied that in your fights? By the way, The Modern Martial Artist (David Christian) did a short analysis of your style, showing some of the traditional karate techniques you've adapted to fighting: m.ruclips.net/video/fmKriLjPwUg/видео.html
Stephen, do you kick with the shin (Muay Thai) or the ball of your foot (Karate)? I have nave seen a roundhouse kick with the ball of the foot in the Octagon. I think the ball of the foot would be more devastating.
Could you make a quick video on what you did say when you were 20 and what you would change about it. The reason I ask is I feel I'm young talented looking to go all the way but would like guidance in the things I'm doing wrong which I would never know otherwise. So I feel highlighting what went well and wrong and how to approach things could be majorly useful to us newcomer.
honestly this channel is amazing. always wished i could train with wonderboy, but this makes up for the lack of time i have for travel. thanks for the videos!!
Thanks fo this video mr Tomphson, let me show respect! But... Isn't mawashi geri weeker then muay thai kick? Or if u kick to the head, it dosen't metter?
I like the video, but this would not work in Muay Thai which is my sport, the lead leg would be chopped down for a start. Also I find it a bit strange that the rear leg doesn't return to it's original position, seems like a very big commitment that could go horribly wrong if the shot missed.
Another reason to rotate as far as you do is to prevent injury to the ACL. If your toes are at a 90 degree angle when you execute either a roundhouse or a side kick, you can tear your ACL. I've seen it happen. Lots of pain, surgery and physical therapy.
karate kicks are beautiful and of course your form is flawless as a pro mma fighter but I personally prefer muay thai roundhouse kicks, I personally believe they are more powerful and even faster.
What kind of stretching do you recommend to be able to achieve that extension? Im 6'5", but with short legs and have a hard time getting my roundhouse above belt height
