I've been playing this gem since 92 when a friend let me borrow it, I wish Mark had shown level 4 where you turn into a plane, anyway highly recommended, and the music makes you wonder how were they able to pull it off on the NES, definitely one of the best in the system along with Journey to Silius.
I really didn't like this the first time I played, probably because I was disappointed that it didn't feel like "Spy Hunter". Thanks for showing off more of the levels and strategy. I think this merits a second look and I may pick it up at my used gaming store.
That looks great. I did miss this the first time around. It looks way better than Spy Hunter 2. I've gotta check this out! CGR delivers another hidden gem.
lol "R" actually does something in this game :P This game is awesome. The boss battles are fun. Controls are good. Love it when the car "morphs" when you get powerups. I get annoyed with some of the slow down turns....but yet it heps when enemies are around. Not super hard, and a great game!
When this game hit the stores, I begged my father to bought it. I really was into the transformable car thing. But hell, it was so hard! I tried for months, but at the end, the game won, the final boss totally destroyed me. Nevertheless, I can remember this game with a smile, it's a nice memory of more simple times.
***** That's debatable. Stage 2/5's music is a blatant remix of the Spy Hunter arcade theme. One theory is that there may have been problems with the Spy Hunter license in Japan, hence the different name.
bad@chaos That's because Battle Formula is the original title of this game. It's so named in Japan. For example what we know as Resident Evil, is known as Bio Hazard in Japan
I played the hell out of my original 8 Bit NES Spy Hunter 1 game, but I did not know that there was a Super Spy Hunter, which has just blown my mind! Thanks guys for the amazing review!
I think the original was a midway game look at "midway treasures" this game is made by sunsoft a very respectful (in my eyes) developer back in the days. So i guess it was an unofficial game from the original.
Beating this game is really difficult, you have to hold down all of your powerup until the final stage, because if you die too many times you can end up being underpowered for the very difficult final boss.
Totally weird observation but I'm shocked at how the car on the box art strongly resembles Maketoys Celeritas. That set is supposedly made up of homages to 80s/90s stuff, I wonder if this is it.
So, Mark. Do you think the Spy Hunter car in this game is being driven by the Super Spy? He still can't turn, but at least he doesn't have to wait for terrorists to walk into his Knife any more!
Lord Karnage, based on the intro to this, I think you need one of these famiclones: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/14/PSOne_Style_Famicom_Clone.jpg/641px-PSOne_Style_Famicom_Clone.jpg
Jesse Sisolack Yeah, when the game gets filled with enemies and bullets, it lags like crazy. But it's not the modern day lag that makes it unplayable. It actually helps you dodge all the crap on screen.
One of my absolute favorite NES titles. Fantastic music especially.
5:18 Oh, anybody remembers the Ping Pong mini game easter egg on Game Over screen? :D
I think I missed a lot of these cool games, including Castlevania 3 and Super Mario 3, because SNES was released. SFII pretty much took over my life.
TOTALLY AWESOME VIDEO GAME 🎮 🕹 MARK GREAT CHANNEL 👍 YOU HAVE HERE
Loving these new reviews! Here from the past of the future 2085
I was facing away from my monitor so when Mark said "look behind you" I saw Classic Game Room and all it's awesomeness!
Soundtrack is awesome! Sounds like a remix of both Batman and Batman: Return of the Joker for the NES.
I've wanted this for awhile. Definitely more motivated to go back and look for it again! :)

Going out later today to buy some more NES games, as my collection right now is rather small.
Gonna keep an eye out for this one!
This game looks fantastic! One I'm def looking forward to getting
I loved this game. I would rent it often on Fridays as a kid
I remember playing this game when I was young, heck I remember playing it on the Atari 2600!
I actualy looked behind myself and when I turned back mark asked me: ,,Did you actualy look behind you?" perfect timing mark bravo :D
I never knew this game existed, but it looks awesome. I have to check it out someday.

Did not know about this one. Must snag a copy of this from somewhere.
This game is called Battle Formula. It was a Spy hunter Clone.
The ost is awesome for this game...
Yeah, great game and awesome soundtrack! One of my favorite NES soundtracks!
Looks way better than a PS1 game.
This game looks awesome, another shoot em up that I need to get at some stage (well the Famicom release - hopefully there is one).
That really looks like a game i would have bought if i owned an nes back in the day
Great review Mark
The 'stick the game in the wrong system' thing gets me every time. #CGRshenanigans
That looks great. I did miss this the first time around. It looks way better than Spy Hunter 2. I've gotta check this out! CGR delivers another hidden gem.
For some reason i'm reminded of megaman when you died in the last seconds of the vid. lol
Good stuff, love the vids man. Needs more truxton though :D

The Famicom release was called Battle Formula. No relation to Spy Hunter at all.

Liu and your point? i already said it was on famicom.
*****
I just thought you didn't know about this thing wiht japanese and american titles of games. Seems it was not the case
wow, gorgeous graphics for nes, competes with some snes games!
not completely precise, however, love the video, because i play a lot of it. I will also put more videos of it on YT (currently at 1)
I played the hell out of my original 8 Bit NES Spy Hunter 1 game, but I did not know that there was a Super Spy Hunter, which has just blown my mind! Thanks guys for the amazing review!
The end boss-music sounds like the boss-music from Batman: Return of The Joker, which sounds like Mega Man 2!
this game could actually be recreated well in 3d space on new console hardware.
El Raheem DeSilva They would ruin it by making it realistic, putting a shitty story in there and make it like a shitty GTA Clone most likely
***** it's already on PS Vita and I here it's good.
The theme for the boss fight is almost the same as the one from Batman Return of the Joker (also made by Sunsoft )
If they happen to remake this game on the SNES they would name it super super spy hunter or maybe super duper spy hunter.
I think the original was a midway game look at "midway treasures" this game is made by sunsoft a very respectful (in my eyes) developer back in the days. So i guess it was an unofficial game from the original.
love sun soft this game is great! and challenging
Very good review.
Beating this game is really difficult, you have to hold down all of your powerup until the final stage, because if you die too many times you can end up being underpowered for the very difficult final boss.
Sunsoft made some awesome nes games.
love it mark
This game has by far the most exaggerated death animation ever lol
Totally weird observation but I'm shocked at how the car on the box art strongly resembles Maketoys Celeritas. That set is supposedly made up of homages to 80s/90s stuff, I wonder if this is it.
I wish I had known about this one. We had spy hunter and that game is way too hard to be enjoyable.
1:40 Crazy graphics
So retro!
I had this as a kid I loved it so much but it's hard as hell. At least for me I suck at all games.
Oh god a Sunsoft game. Their NES music is way too impressive...
That's some brutal slow down.
Just played it today. Wish I would have rented it back in the day. It was always at the video store but I went for the wrestling game
i like this channel u looks like a cool person (Y)
NES WILL...NOT CHANGE
Super Spy Hunter death sequence reminds me of Mega man's
So, Mark. Do you think the Spy Hunter car in this game is being driven by the Super Spy?
He still can't turn, but at least he doesn't have to wait for terrorists to walk into his Knife any more!
cool game
i still got it :D
I have Spy Hunter on my Ps Vita. It's fun!
Lately lots of trolls in the comments, is Mark getting more popular? :P
There was a time when peace where all around us in CGR
I looked behind me Mark, saw my wife with a hangmans rope, hope that doesn't mean anything
Does the Retron 5 work with the NES Advantage controller? I have a Retron 3 and for some reason the NES Advantage does not work.
What happens to the reviews that Lord Karnage doesn't approve?
This is just Battle Formula with a different name.Arino played this in a Game Center CX Episode.
This looks amazing, I'm sad I never tried it back in the day.
I got this game a week ago.. and this aint bad!!! *****N E S - H A R D*****
Dang and I thought Kirby's adventure looked good
Sadly, yes............I looked behind me.
The down vote is from the spy who is being hunted...
possibly by far the beat game that pushes the nes to the limit.

Emulated footage? Come on Mark!
Looks like a great game but it looks like it is pushing the NES to the limit. I see some lag. This would be awesome on an emulator.
Jesse Sisolack

PS1 best console ever.
This game contains some of the best Sunsoft music ever!
Did not know about this one. Must snag a copy of this from somewhere.
