Playing off-meta is such a psychological attack in tournament settings. Even with open team sheets the intimidation factor of bringing something most people consider bad or unusable to an in-person competitive event immediately throws a lot of people off their game.
its about the idea that loss, win, win, loss, win is better than loss, loss, win, win, win. Because the second loss in a row can really affect you on a mental level. Most importantly, it might make it less likely to actually GET those three consecutive wins (I ignore the fact that your standing is worse in that situation - I am thinking about the quality of play)

After some time has passed now and I started watching his content in the last 6ish months, bro obviously has the skill to be able to do such a tactic and back it up with gameplay that is beyond solid. You're an incredible player Wolfey, I might not be that important but you certainly earned my respect with your skills and knowledge.
I won a competition in my county with a Swadloon back in the days of ORAS. The girl that lives next to me is still pissed that she lost to that cute bundle of joy.
I dont know why gyarados had such a low usage rate. Ive been using it since release and the variety of sets it can run and typing has made it a beast in my opinion
I think its just a case of where gyarados can do alot of things really well theres just alot more pokemon nowadays that can fill a specific role PERFECTLY, so the more generalist options become less popular even if theyre still quite strong. There are tankier tanks and faster/stronger sweepers, so in cases where you have to keep the same pokemon and movesets why run gyarados set when its versatility gets removed and you can just run something else that already is hyper specialized for the role you wanted the gyarados to fill? Not saying i think gyarados is a bad pick or anything just trying to explain the thought process on why people in official tournament settings *tend* to be more inclined to use a pokemon thats seen as a S rank for its role vs one thats B or A rank in many roles Though as wolfey demonstrates often and as youve seen for yourself theres no need to adhere to the meta to be successful and have fun, its just that alot of people also find hyper optimization fun as well and those are the type of people who are *usually* more competitive and go out of their way to be in tournaments so it just leads to most tournament participants trying to follow the meta as a correlated byproduct even if non-meta teams are sometimes harder to deal with because theyre less predictable
@JubioHDX I agree with this. I noticed myself while using it that despite how well it worked on my specific team I did think of other mons to fill its role better in one way but the versatility alone made it work. Of course that's with my team in mind where I'd have to replace two mons to cover everything it does for me
@@orchid685 don't worry gyaradoa now on top 12 on usage. It is really good counter to ting Lu and with t wave + waterfall you can lock out your opponent from moving. And it also got taunt so it stop spore as well.

I gotta love the ace attorney music so much , I heard phoenix wright , apollo justice , and even the great ace attorney music all over the video. And I love a good mix of two of my fav games on wolfey's video.
I really like the idea behind this because just seeing meta staples in a mirror match gets boring real quick, and it also proves you can do well using knowledge.
Between you and Tang, I've finally decided to dip my toes into the competitive pool. Especially that last match at FW regionals with Tang and Ugarte. It was my first time at regionals, and the hype in the crowd was amazing, and imagining myself beating out the competition with an unorthodox team and making it into the top players just made me more excited to get into competitive. I'm currently hunting and breeding for a shiny living dex, but I'm also looking for competitive viable pokemon at the same time. at the end of the day, I'm excited to debut into the competitive scene in 2024, and I can't wait to see the meta then compared to FW 2023.
On a completely separate note, the ace attorney (specifically the great ace attorney) ost was so fire near the end. its one of my fav games and I love that its amazing ost is getting more recognition :D
I kinda want a "how to make bad pokemon more competitve" video. Not forcing it, just an idea if you want to. Your current content is absolutely fantastic and I literally drop whatever I'm doing when I get the notification that you posted a new video to watch it. Thanks for being such a great content creator and congrats on 1 mil!

Wow wolfey's first opponent haxxed the shit out of him. How incredibly close those games were while Wolfey's team was off meta and hax wasn't on his side is a testament to how great at this game he is.
My only gripe with the first match was "I'm gonna double protect both pokemon against the single kingambit". Like why not just double attack while it was that low? Am I missing something?
10 months late, but you can look at it like that. Espathra needs a few turns to unlock its final form - but it won't *get* those turns in double battles due to everything dishing out the pain left and right.

31:00 the presence of mind to realise that going to time was better than taking a shot at an opponent’s last Pokémon that has 1HP left is nuts
The editing and jokes are incredible, this is super good!
That “It was not over” gif was fantastic.
ah yes doubles vs singles
in smogon espartha’s chilling in ubers and ceruldege is ou
My first exposure to Wolf was him using mega gengar to time stall in gen 6. And I thought that he was a scummy player for the cheap tactic. After some time has passed now and I started watching his content in the last 6ish months, bro obviously has the skill to be able to do such a tactic and back it up with gameplay that is beyond solid. You're an incredible player Wolfey, I might not be that important but you certainly earned my respect with your skills and knowledge.
It’s amazing seeing that world champ difference. The original ideas are amazing.
This content is so damn good man, good gameplay, concise commentary, solid editing, it feels like im at a poke tourney
Moral of the story is “Just because top players say a Pokémon is “bad” doesn’t mean it’s unusable, you just need to get creative”
Don't use "bad" Pokemon unless you're cracked at Pokemon is the real moral here
I won a competition in my county with a Swadloon back in the days of ORAS. The girl that lives next to me is still pissed that she lost to that cute bundle of joy.
CONGRATS WOLFEY!! HERES TO A MILLION MORE ❤️
I dont know why gyarados had such a low usage rate.
Not saying i think gyarados is a bad pick or anything just trying to explain the thought process on why people in official tournament settings *tend* to be more inclined to use a pokemon thats seen as a S rank for its role vs one thats B or A rank in many roles
Though as wolfey demonstrates often and as youve seen for yourself theres no need to adhere to the meta to be successful and have fun, its just that alot of people also find hyper optimization fun as well and those are the type of people who are *usually* more competitive and go out of their way to be in tournaments so it just leads to most tournament participants trying to follow the meta as a correlated byproduct even if non-meta teams are sometimes harder to deal with because theyre less predictable
I can’t believe you beat TatsuDozo by timerstalling, that’s not how TatsuDozo is supposed to work
Love to see every time original ideas by you
I missed your vids so much! Really happy to see such a cool team find at least some success. Expertly piloted, as well.
GUYS GUYS GUYS WOLFEY'S AT 1 MILLION! WE'VE DONE IT, WOLFE PACK! WE'VE DONE IT!!!
So proud and happy to see you hit 1 million Wolfey! So deserved.

Wolfe, I've been following you since a little bit before 150K.
...It has been nice to watch the road to one million, and will be nice to watch further.
You're an amazing creator.
That timer stall to avoid the dice roll was actually genius
I gotta love the ace attorney music so much , I heard phoenix wright , apollo justice , and even the great ace attorney music all over the video.
And I love a good mix of two of my fav games on wolfey's video.
Question: How did you paralyze Gholdengo with Thunder Wave? It has Good as Gold
Tinkaton has the ability Mold Breaker, which ignores abilities
In the second match Wolfie would have won since the gambit was in psychic terrain and couldn't sucker punch. I think?
Normally not a fan of time wins, but using it to dodge getting screwed by a random accuracy drop is pretty based.
The quality of the editing is amazing! Nice one!
You lost so I will not see who sponsored the video and I will not continue further.
😂
The paradox Pokemon in comp has been so wild. Can't wait for dlc and legendaries start entering the picture.
On a completely separate note, the ace attorney (specifically the great ace attorney) ost was so fire near the end. its one of my fav games and I love that its amazing ost is getting more recognition :D
Hearing his begging for those last 4,000 subscribers was absolutely HYSTERICAL, and it will live rent-free in my head forever 😂
Half these pokemon are/were meta at some point. Ceruledge, Espartha, Misdreavus
This explains a lot I personally play Vgc on showdown and saw a lot of the gravity strategy on showdown and this explains it also great video congratulations and on 1 million too!!!!
10:20 kingambit stalemated in a winning position 💀
Wow wolfey's first opponent haxxed the shit out of him. How incredibly close those games were while Wolfey's team was off meta and hax wasn't on his side is a testament to how great at this game he is.
My only gripe with the first match was "I'm gonna double protect both pokemon against the single kingambit". Like why not just double attack while it was that low? Am I missing something?
I love the little comedy blips you wrote for like everything when showing the move or the ‘mon. Keep it up! 🤙🏼
Take a shot everytime "Indeedee And Armarouge" gets said
4:26 "All I need to do is predict the sucker punches" on psychic terrain, I don't think they will ever come XD
-Espathra
-bad
My smogon brain can't handle this
10 months late, but you can look at it like that.
Espathra needs a few turns to unlock its final form - but it won't *get* those turns in double battles due to everything dishing out the pain left and right.
