Trick Room would be really good, since the meta is defined by speed, Trick room would turn into a great way to counter fast pokémon. Just pluck it onto something fast and the move would go first, then it's gg
@@brycenumbergenerator7673well azelf would probably be too fast to be able to use explosion in trick room but yeah it would be able to set up Stealth Rock then trick room with Boots and taunt to prevent hazards
Not really sure how no priority would specifically affect Trick Room except for Trick Room not having negative priority anymore, which, if you're using Trick Rook, you wouldn't want a faster pokemon in the first place unless you're switching out. Trick Room would still be pretty bad for all the same reasons it's currently pretty bad in singles. Trick Room, as something that needs a move to set up, will basically always be more trouble than it's worth in singles. Either you're already faster or you lose too much time setting up and switching to who you need Trick Room for. Doubles is a different story, though, but doubles is why Trick Room has to have -7 priority. It's absolutely game breaking otherwise and it would be so widespread in use that every game would simply turn into a TR tug of war because everyone and their mom would be using it, which would simply end up with TR being repeatedly being turned on and off again. Only way for Trick Room to be useful in singles is to make an ability that triggers it on a slow mon that can immediately start abusing it. Meanwhile, buffing Trick Room *at all* basically destroys the entirety of doubles. Trick Room is exactly as stunted as it has to be to continue to exist. Keeping priority means Trick Room essentially has to have negative priority, and removing priority would cause the move to become so over centralizing that it would simply make itself redundant. Kind of like how simply taking Genesect from 99 to 101 base speed would take it from being a simple monster to being the literal reincarnation of Hitler.
No priority will also benefit glass cannon pokemons. Since they no longer have to deal with getting taken out by priority moves which would usually ohko them since they tend to have poor defensive stats.
There's still counterplay, in singles a sash/sturdy trick room setter would nuke any glass cannons your opps have because you then switch in torcoal or what have you and start sweeping.
This video really shows how complex the Pokemon battle system is, by how strongly it can be affected by removing one part of it. You should do more of these types of videos, where we just see what happens when you change certain things about the game. Like:What if the physical/special split never happened? What if Pokemon had no types? What if Pokemon had no abilities? Etc.
I’ll admit I hadn’t given much thought to how imperative priority moves are (both positive and negative). Thanks for such a detailed analysis! Great video.
Yeah. I feel like there would be whole strategies around setting up trick room with a fast Pokemon, and then switching into a slow heavy hitting or bulky Pokemon and finding of your opponent’s team.
You can counter trick room pretty easily, even without priority, and still a few of the best pokemon won’t benefit with trick room, game would become unbalanced and only a few pokemons would be viable for VGC, the whole point of priority was literally made to balance the game
With your phasing moves thing we actually kind of have a way to see what this looks like: in hackmons regieleki with roar and sleep talk paired with comatose kind of does this. Comatose allows it to use sleep talk right away, and you will use whatever move sleep talk pulls with its priority level of 0 rather than the priority level of the move. if you only have sleep talk and roar you use roar without negative priority every tun and can pretty much completely shut down your opponent. Because of this, balanced hackmons banned comatose as an ability. It doesn't work with focus punch though since sleep talk is hard coded to not select it so it will fail.
Don't even need hackmons, prankster riolu with copycat and roar, use a roar while surviving a hit and then use copycat with +1 priority to loop roars. though I guess the +1 priority does defeat the purpose of the thought excitement but it's still legal hazard/roar spam lol
I can't imagine a world where I can't do fake out and surging strikes to instantly win the game but also no priority on ally switch would make the game more fun
This is a very minor thing, but I appreciate the use of Horizons clips throughout the video! It's a super fun series imo (well, at least in terms of it being a kids' anime, lol) I'm too dumb to really think about move priority and things like that, so I found this concept interesting! Great video as always
Maybe priority moves can be given different effects influenced by the speed stat of the user? For example, Quick attack could have its attack increased and Protect could be more likely to succeed when used multiple times in a row the faster the user is, while Circle Throw could have its accuracy increase and Mirror Coat has a chance of working with physical attacks the slower the user is.
Don't forget about the hugest form of priority, switching. If your swap happened after the opponent attacked the he game would just be a bunch of fast glass cannons trying to Ohko each other
Dawww, the Dreepy in the thumbnail also have little sunglasses! I've done a lot of Doubles-focused hacks (Odyssey all the time, Elite Redux and ROWE in Doubles mode) and Protect is *huge.* I've cheesed my way through otherwise impossible fights because the shmuck AI doubled into a protecting low-HP mon while its buddy whaled on them. Follow Me is similarly huge. Oswin the Etrian Aron was the backbone of my Odyssey LC run because it gets Follow Me, and my 6 Alcremies run of Elite Redux was carried by Follow Me. I've used Feint once, in Unbound on a Monobug LC run, to open up Galavan's Alolan Raichu to my Spinarak's First Impression (it gets that in Unbound). This was the only thing that outsped my five 1HP Liechi Berry Reversal Yanmas after a Boost, so it had to drop.
This was a fun video! I think gliscor would continue to be a great mon. No spikes or tspikes damage, and the ability to set all hazards... Does it get whirlwind? Regieleki and cyclizar might end up rapid spinning with a choice scarf. Personally, i like cyclizar because it has knock for spin blockers.
I’ve always thought that priority moves should just be a one turn speed boost kind of thing. Instead of KG blitzing everything at the very end of a game, it can only do that up to 1.5x of whatever its speed is.
trick room would also be broken: fast roar/wwind users are completely neutered, as are slow counterattackers, teams would want fast tr + team of slow mons to take advantage of the instant speed change
Now I want something with an ability called "Dont be Hasty" or something that just negates all +priority when it's on field. The moves could still work, but in speed order.
No negative priority trick room in vgc would be so interesting, you'd have fast trick room setters to enable the trick room sweepers immediately. Lagging tail might be used more to set up TR and then trick lagging tail onto the fast mon to have two TR sweepers
@@shepskydadok well it’s either electric or fighting. In my opinion these would be pretty difficult teams to build as most of the good ones are on the ban list. I already submitted a proposed electric team, and for fighting, I predict that sneasler, lucario, gallade and maybe breloom and conkeldurr would be on a fighting type team
I found it interesting the topic came up from negative priority like roar, because any time I've had the thought it's been e speed spam that's brought it up. Also found the battle at the end more interesting than any stall team I've ever seen so 🤷♂️.
I'm almost more interested in the inverse question: what if the speed stat were eliminated, all moves had a level of priority, and your indication of whether a Pokemon was fast or slow was access to a fast or slow move pool? This is obviously a more fundamental change that would really affect the prediction / switch dynamic in competitive. But, games like Gloomhaven operate primarily on being able to choose different priority moves in different situations while still having possible move composition indicate class characteristics.
Legends arceus replaced priority and priority moves with move styles and the moves that used to cause priority were made so that they only make your next move come sooner. I think that’s a way to remove priority that’s viable
Considering the Speed Stat is already the most important Stat (at least in VGC), priority is way to limit its importance to a degree. That said, a special mode in Showdown that removes priority would be interesting.
