      @finderfinder4290 Год назад +47

      @@vivil2533 is it? I was under the impression that moves like solar beam and the like were worse than recharging moves because the opponent knows what you’re going to do and can switch out to a pokemon that resists it. Is this assumption wrong?

    • @vivil2533
      @vivil2533 Год назад +53

      @@finderfinder4290 the idea behind such moves is that they're suppose to be so strong that no pokemon takes it well.
      If a strong pokemon uses solar beam the opponent has to choose switch to a resist, or likely lose a pokemon.
      The idea being that the resist takes so much damage that you can finish it off.
      Solar beam is a bad move mostly because if typing, a lot of double grass resists exist, and not many super power house grass types.
      If I use giga impact however, I will kill whatever is in front of me, but then give my opponent a free turn to do whatever he pleases.
      He even gets switch advantage since his pokemon fainted, allowing him to switch to his sweeper and counter ko, or use a set up move like sword dance, dragon dance, or belly drum completely safe.
      The incoming attack being predictable, allows you to somewhat manipulate the opponent, but the recharge being second allows the opponent to do literally anything he wants, with full knowledge you can't do shit about it.
      To be fair both types of move are worse than moves that don't waste a turn, but choosing who to throw into an ove base 100 move is alot different than choosing hoe to take advantage of a free turn.
      (Double battles complicate thing but it's mostly the same premise, with the addition of not onow who is being targeted)

      @@serhumano3692 thats still not as detrimental as giving them a turn that they know is free. IMO
      you're giving them a free turn either way, but in on instance they know its free, and can just set up on you.
      also if it's doubles, they have to either guess who you're attacking or double protect, in which case your second pokemon is safe to set up.
      Any move that takes two turns is bad, but think about all the things you can do if you KNOW you're opponent cant do anything, now think of all the things you can do if you KNOW a 140 Base Power sky attack is coming.
      Like i said you could argue one way or the other, but i would rather not give my opponent a turn where they know for certain I cant do anything.
      also in doubles things like taunt can be used to make set up moves, and protect non issues, but two turn moves aren't that good so i doubt you would want to commit that hard.

  • @dm9910
    @dm9910 Год назад +396

    The confounding factor here is that EV is not as simple as "expected damage" - dealing 100% is more than twice as good as dealing 50%, because an opposing Pokemon at 50% is still fully operational and gets extra turns to do stuff to you. This is especially true for Ruination, which can't actually deal the second 50%, so if your ally can't finish them it's at least a 3HKO. If you're relying on a 90% accuracy move for a 3HKO, that's not much different in EV to going for 3 Fissures. But with the Fissure route, you have the huge upside of having a 49% chance of KOing in 1 or 2 turns, and 64% of the time, Fissure is equal to or better than a Ruination 3HKO. In the 34% of the time where it's worse, it might be MUCH worse, but losing by a little is the same as losing by a lot. And in a tournament environment especially where the prizes are very top-heavy, it's often better to be high-variance.
    So I think it makes sense that Fissure is popular despite being, in a pure "expected damage" sense, significantly worse than Ruination. The match strategy checks out.

    Kinda crazy what all has to come together so that Fissure is viable on Ting-Lu and not just a gimmick:
    1. has to be insanely defensive
    2. has to have Stomping Tantrum so even when Fissure misses clicking Fissure is not just a waste
    3. has to be offensive enough so that Stomping Tantrum is actually worth it
    4. has to be viable with AV
    5. doesn't have a strong movepool with AV so that you have the slot for Fissure
    6. the meta doesn't have a lot of strong ground immunities making Fissure and Stomping Tantrum better
    And even with all of that Fissure is already becoming less popular

    • @yppahdalg2397

      All that and it's an easy strategy to learn. When a new game or series comes out, the ladder is usually saturated with these style of strategies and less with more complicated ones, (Example hyper offence vs. trick room.) This is because people are trying to learn the new matchups and new meta, something easier to do when you don't have to think as much about your teams strategy. It's why Dondozo/Tatsu were so popular at the start of S/V but has become less popular as time goes on.

      fun fact, in smogons rulings (in every smogon format except pure hackmons and anything goes the 2 no ban formats) ohko moves are banned not from being op, just from being unfun to play against. It's like if GF gave the E4 aces sheer cold, for normal player yea just go overlevel them, but if you go for a no overleveling rule then you KNOW that thing is gonna okho you at least twice and there is nothing you can do. It just wasn't FUN to lose a game to 30% odds.
      This is why I actually prefer smogon to VGC smogon operates on a system that is unfun/unfair means it should be banned. VGC, okay let's be real item clause and species clause is meaningless you would very rarely wanna run 2 of the same mons anyway (in smogon ag that is only ever used with stuff like Liepard anyway doing revive cats or other stupid unfun strats). I also hate the mindset of "its a legend it's op". Should we really put Articuno and Mega Rayquaza in the same category?

      @@arthurfilion5992 Iron Valiant is a terrible example of good BST distribution. If Iron Valiant's 570 BST wasn't eaten up by 130 Atk AND 110 Sp. Atk. If it dropped one of those stats by 70 points, it would be able to put those now freed up 70 points into something like its HP, defenses, or god forbid, its speed. If you run physical Valiant, your BST is actually 460. If you run special Valiant, your BST is a pathetic 440.
      The same philosophy can be applied to anything with 70-90 base speed. You're not fast enough to outrun the base 100 speed tier or anything higher. The only speeds that matter are 100+. So if you have 500 BST to distribute to your own concept pokemon, and you give 70 of that BST to speed, you're wasting 70 BST. Make the base speed 10 and put those 60 base points into stacking up one offense stat and rounding out its defense. 120 HP, 10 Atk, 110 Def, 140 Sp. Atk, and 110 Sp. Def, to go with the base 10 speed.
      With a 500 BST, I made the best trick room stat spread in the game. Dragonite has a 600 BST and is less tanky than my pokemon, doesn't hit as hard with either stat, and isn't even fast enough to outspeed the base 100 speed tier, nor slow enough to benefit from Trick Room.
      Dragonite has an average base 80 speed and a horrifying 100 Sp. Atk. Why is that 100 Sp. Atk horrifying? Because no one in the history of ever would use that stat when they can use 134 Atk to click Extreme Speed, Dragon Claw, and Earthquake. If that worthless 100 Sp. Atk got dropped to 50, and put those 50 base stats into its speed, all of a sudden you now have a base 130 speed and you're now a fast threat that isn't only useful for clicking Extreme Speed. Or, you could drop your speed all the way to 30 and use those 100 base stats to invest in your bulk and become unkillable. You don't care about being fast if you have a great priority move and can never get killed because you have such high HP and defenses.

      @fivell 10 месяцев назад +9

      Kind of but also not really.
      There's two main differences between using stomping twice and using it once after whiffing a move:
      - First, and kind of obviously: both interactions play over the course of two turns. Going for two stompings guarantees you damage on the first turn, whereas a move failing doesn't. That means if you, say, get ko'd, or find yourself unable to make a move on the second turn, then one of the scenarios nets you damage while the other doesn't, which can be pretty impactful in a metagame where a lot of pokemon are very bulky like vgc. Besides, using two stomping tantrums allows you to potentially switch up your target between turns.
      - Second, variance. Because each stomping tantrum has 16 different damage rolls, rolling the die twice over once means you get a different average damage using either strategy

    You're focused on the raw numbers of theory, but one thing you don't mention - that you know as a top competitive player is pivotal - is the mind games and threat, and the meta around that. The meta around not playing against Wolfie's team, but playing against Wolfie-type players. From watching your videos and analysis, you are very responsive to threats and risk on the field and minimizing them (you've expressed similar responses to Venusaur/Sleep Powder). And that makes Fissure powerful against YOU.
    While Fissure might be a 30% chance to hit for them, Wolfie-types are not going to play like it's 30% accuracy since they are risk-averse. Wolfie-types are going to play like it's 90% accurate since they don't want to leave their fate to chance. This is going to cause Wolfie-types to take less statistically optimal paths just to mitigate that risk, which can actually swing the statistical tradeoff back in their opponent's favor, and makes them more predictable allowing their opponent to make stronger hard-reads against them. They're playing what's super effective against you because you're the meta.

    a loss is a loss so it doesn't really matter if you lose by 1 pokemon or 3. fissure being able to convert a lost position into a winnable one, even 30% of the time, is better than a move that would put you in a still-losing-but-by-less position imo.

That 45% dramatically decreases as the battle goes on while the 30% from fissure is always effectively 30% since it doesn’t care about what %HP the opponent is at. It’s always 100% of the hp. Then without fissure running stomping tantrum is just suboptimal because you won’t be ‘reliably missing’.

      Unless you're only ever spamming fissure (meaning your opponent is always max hp) fissure also goes down in value when your opponent takes damage, just like ruination. If you're talking about single battles, sure, your argument makes sense. But in double battles, which is where this whole Fissure discussion came up recently, I believe you get more value with Ruination because even if the effect from Ruination decreases as the battle goes on, it might leave opposing Pokemon just in range to be knocked out by Ting-Lu's partner, which makes it more consistent than a OHKO move that can take up to 3-4 attempts in general to produce some effect.

    • @Lightkkkj

      Except that you forgot that the value of fissure in an opponent with less health also decreases. You wouldn't use fissure at a target with 20% or less, as well as you're not clicking ruination on that turn. Ruination is just more consistent because it not only deals damage more consistently, but it helps ting-lu's teamates clean up the field more easily.

    I have to say Wolfe, you are doing a fantastic job explaining the nuances of competitive Pokemon in a way that is both easy to understand and entertaining.
    I feel a lot of singles/VGC PokeTubers fall into 2 major traps that you successfully navigated:
    1. Too much information: Some videos are so overloaded with jargon that they are impenetrable to anyone who isn't already an experienced player. This is a problem as more experienced players would have less use for a video explaining the nuances of Pokemon than a less experienced one, as they may already know the information.
    2. Visual Blandness: I have seen way too many videos that are just a guy talking over a Pokemon Showdown team builder showing sets. These videos are so visually uninteresting that, despite the quality of the information being presented, may cause the viewers to lose interest in the video. You have enough visuals, cuts, and battle footage to easily keep the viewers attention fully engaged.
    I think you have set a bar that other PokeTubers should strive to emulate and surpass. Fantastic job.

      Saying this is about pride misses the point of what wolfey was trying to say imo
      He doesn't care about pride and frankly caring about it is exactly how you plateau at a skill-based game. That's how it goes
      However, he asks these questions because he wants to ask people how it feels to play around these OHKO moves (why would you play your favorite game if it's not rewarding in what it determines as skill) AS WELL AS ask the following: WHAT DO THE OHKO MOVES REWARD PEOPLE FOR DOING?
      OHKO moves are essentially a dice roll and are a high risk high reward shotput of a move that people tend to click til they hit the jackpot - while they may follow the game's rules on a basic foundational level, they bypass several of the nuances of skill-based mental gameplay that are the main selling point of the franchise's games. The moves encourage clicking them as many times as possible before the opportunity wanes out.
      Rewarding someone for cheesing the OHKO 30% of the time, especially when it happens multiple times, is a good way to discourage the actual appeal behind pokemon (trying to mindgame your opponent) and simply encourages gambling for the 30% chance you simply kill the pokemon without bothering with any other interaction it would've proposed - is that an appealing game to watch, let alone invest time into?

    I consider it a ~3HKO move. If I have a bad matchup, and my next best option is a 4HKO or worse - I will use fissure. I might get lucky and OHKO or 2HKO - but by considering it a ~3HKO move, I am simply choosing the move that will kill my opponent the fastest, with the highest reliability given the circumstances. Fissure is also a very good option to dealing with insanely difficult walls like Dondozo, Ting-Lu, and Wo-chien (most of which can heal off any damage you might deal to them easily, outside of taunt).

    I don't agree with the ruination over fissure argument: your reasoning looks only at expected damage; this is normally an important key indicator of quality. But we have a special circumstance: if you click ruination you have 100% chance your opponent survives and makes another move next turn and with with fissure you have only 70% chance the opponent has another move with that pokémon.
    So besides looking only at the things you can do in the turn you need to be wary of what the opponent can do with that potential turn of survival.
    Pokémon is a game of strategy AND chance; Expected damage taken and done is an important part, and variance is normally a bit looked down upon; variance works both ways in the right situations this variance can give you an opportunity the situation otherwise did not have.
    I am not making an argument for or against fissure as I have not tested this enough, just expanding a bit on the expected value fallacy.

      @@blazechaos212 Naturally, the choice is not straightforward: I like to look at it as a maximization of expected added value to the pokémon.
      My only point here is that expected value of the damage is an insufficient argument to decide one attack over the other.
      A bit math below:
      It can be meta-specific that one attack outperforms the other (also based on coverage), or just preference.
      1. coverage (If there are a lot of flying/levitate pokémon in meta; fissure=bad. If my damaging moveset does too little damage and switching seems suboptimal; fissure=strong)
      2. My favorite reasonings: follow-up turns (with x% certainty this strategy can ko the opponent's pokemon within y turns; or have as goal to just harm the pokémon. Fissure kills for sure on average within 3 1/3 turn; this is a statistical certainty:30% chance on first turn, 51% chance within 2 turns, 65.7% within 3 turns).

      This is a very fair point! My reasoning is that if you’re clicking Fissure, you should probably assume the opponent will survive unless it’s a last resort, so I didn’t mention it in the video, but the upside of getting the KO is definitely something worth considering

    This is always a very interesting concept, because ultimately, almost every game is left up to chance. All you can do as a trainer is put the odds as heavily in your favor as possible. Make a team with good odds to have good matchups. Use a strategy that has good odds to succeed. There sometimes guaranteed wins, but almost never on turn 1, which means at some point, that match was out of your hands and all you could do was stack odds as best you could.
    Therefor, if fissure is the highest winrate playstyle, then it's no riskier than anything else, it just FEELS like it, because of so much variance from the entire match being put into one move. If the move hits though, the rest of the match becomes far more certain than with other strategies.
    It just also tends to feel better when the variance that lost you the game was a missed prediction, rather than a lucky hit/miss/crit/flinch/etc.

    a 30% chance to instako seems small
    until you consider
    it has the same chance to insta ko as:
    body slam has to paralyze
    scald has to burn
    discharge has to paralyse one opponent
    iron head has to flinch...
    you get the picture.
    ohko moves are "good" for avoiding stalemate situations
    but i hate that its balancing factor is "that it wiffs most of the time"
    the problem isn't that ting-lu is hitting every fissure it uses
    the problem is that the luckiest fissure user wins. you might just win a whole match just because of fissure, or you may just look like a fool and hit none.
    luck over skill most of the time (not saying that fissure users are unskilled, heck what do i know about pokemon, but the move is just relying on luck which is imcompetitive)
    yea, its just weird that the balancing factor is that it wiffs a lot
    well it could also not, now what.

    I find it interesting that the current discussion on Fissure is very similar to the one that lead to many of the bans on Smogon, the premier single battle meta. This includes the ban on all OHKO moves. Most people playing singles don't think that OHKO moves are actually good, but that they promote playstyles that rely on luck instead of skill. It is pretty much objectively wrong to use OHKO moves in singles, but if the goal is to promote skillful play as supposed to luckbased play, the decision was made to disallow OHKO moves, as well as evasion boosting moves among other things.

    • @dontmisunderstand6041
      @dontmisunderstand6041 Год назад +1

      Ironically, the only way for OHKO moves to ever be competitively viable is in cases where the strategies around them do make them genuinely good showcases of pure skill rather than luck. So the logic is fundamentally incorrect.

      imo, if your strategy can't handle losing one of its components, it's a bad strategy that deserves to lose. It’s just fundamentally opposed to the environment Smogon wants to make

    • @dontmisunderstand6041
      @dontmisunderstand6041 Год назад

      @@dragonlord564 There is no skill involved when there's no RNG, because at that point it's all just math. If it's not possible for things to go wrong, then it's not possible to be skillful. At that point there is no skill, only knowledge. There becomes an objectively correct solution. A solveable game ceases to be a game when either player knows the solution.
      And that circles back to a point I've been trying to get across: competitive players don't care about skill expression or he health of the game. They want to win, and want to feel like they deserve it. This mindset is inherently anti-competitive and devalues skill, but they don't want to acknowledge this because it would, again, make them feel like they didn't deserve to win.

    One issue is that the expected value calculation ignores the upside of missing fissure, that stomping tantrum has 150 base power for a turn. It's not a straightforward thing, but some of the time you're going to be getting a 75 power ground spread move off for free. Anything they do to avoid it is somewhat predictable, so potentially punishable. It's also obviously also really good when you're badly behind.
    The real problem is that it's hard to consistently get the kind of records competitive requires to advance, if 30% of the time you just lose a pokemon turn 1, and if you don't it's not even that bad for them since they can guarentee get off the temporarially 150 power move, and get a free switch in, or swords dance or something if you play around it.
