  • It seems silly to have to say out loud, but I needed a bike desk. I've been using the virtual ride software Zwift with my indoor bike trainer and I needed a way to place my computer close enough to see and use without spending a lot of money. So I thought I would build one and show you all how I did it.

hi brother, i just built two of these, the only difference is I didnt cut out a bottle holder because my frame has one. also i put 2 inch casters on the bottom. I didn't use pocket holes I just drilled 2 &1/2 inch T25 construction screws at angles. I made two of these, one for me and one for my wife and I promise you I am so happy with how it came out. This saved us 300 bucks! in this day and age where money is so uncertain we couldnt afford to go on amazon and spend 150 each on a laptop stand. Luckily we have tons of 2x3 boards in the garage so it literally cost us nothing extra but some sweat.
You are an amazing person for this and I will be subscribing.

This was fantastic. My 14 yr old son and I built the “Z” desk over the weekend. We adjusted height and angles to fit my road bike. Our total cost for materials was just under $50. The small shelf is great for my TV remote. This was a fun and easy build. Thank you.

Finally made the Z desk. Had to go back to my high school maths to redo the design to fit my vertically challenged self, but I got there eventually. I did away with the water bottles holes since I figure my chilled water bottles are just going to leave water condensation over everything and it won't be pretty. So I plan to buy a cheap water bottle holder and just screw it to the left side. I didn't do the shelf either, but might go back and add it later. Not sure the storage will be much use for me. Have attached a towel hook to the right side, and used a couple of coats of polyurethane to protect it from my sweaty self. Plus I added a fourth cross brace on the bottom at the back. Doesn't get in the way of the front tyre of the bike at all.
Definitely wish I had a bigger shed/garage, and could justify the additional toys - a mitre saw and a decent size workbench would have made this much easier. But I still think made a decent job with a circular saw, and using a cheap plastic folding table. It's not perfect - a little asymmetrical TBH - but it does the job a thousand time better than the previous stack of plastic storage crates.

Finally built the z desk yesterday. It is a perfect addition to my home office in my basement. Need to install a fan underneath in the dead zone past the handle bars. the height is perfect for a laptop. thought about a keyboard tray but no need. Great design.

That is an awesome desk. I am working from home and was just looking into a way to create a cycling desk.
I am going to build the Z desk. I don't have a miter saw but my neighbour has one to do the angled cuts on.
I am picturing making a retractable keyboard tray where you have your shelf.
    Love the kreg jig!!

I live in phoenix AZ, summers are too hot & dry for me to ride outside. I also like being productive on my computer, so this solution might just work.

very cool and it looks like it's just wide enough to mount a box fan into that void above the front wheel.

@@LunchRide finally made mine but spun it 180 degrees. The main support of the z aims away from the bike. The upper y supports aimed at the rider have a 6" deep 28" wide keyboard and mouse desk. I used a PC with a 32" monitor mounted angled up in front of the front wheel with a led monitor wall mount on a 2*6 between the main vertical support. When on the bike the bottom of the monitor is just visible over the keyboard. Saves on the neck.

Since there isn't much weight on this, is there any reason (aside from adjusting some of the support piece cut lengths) that I couldn't use 2x3cs instead to save on weight/cost?
Also, wouldn't it increase stability to turn the bottom piece such that the wider part of the board is in contact with the ground?
