    Self-adhesive band-aids are a great general hack. Tires, inner tubes, wires, general rubbing, and you can stack em if you need extra thickness. Also great for when skin meets hard surface at speed.

    I always carry some electrical (insulation tape). I've tied a broke spoke to another spoke with it. It can used as a frame protector against cables and cables housing rubbing on the frame. Also, use it as a scratch preventer on your chain stay. I used it as an inner tube patch once too. It worked a wonder.

    1_ you can also buy spray isopropyl alcohol in electronic shops.
    2_ for clinchers i do not use soapy water but inflate/deflate a couple times at minumum safe pressure. this also helps the tube to sit properly in the tyre

    Wrap some gorilla/duct tape and electrical tape round your mini hand pump or CO2 canisters can give you a really versatile tape for roadside fixes. I’ve used duct tape for a tire boot, taped up broken spokes, and the tape also acts as a bit of insulation on cold days too

    A dry method for seating tubes and tyres is talcum powder/French chalk. Make sure you get a brand with a smell you like! I tip a good spoonful into a new tyre and turn it.round and round until the inside is coated then top out the rest. With new tubes I get a palm full of talc and rest the tube over it, close my hand over the tube and pull the tube through the talc. Works a treat.

    • @UnivegaSuperSport
      @UnivegaSuperSport 2 года назад

      I use this also. I get some along a new tire bead and it seats just easier. I had to order Rema's Tire Talc because my Walmart no longer carry's talc. It was screwing with babys' lungs. It's safe if you take your time and don't cloud up your area.

    I have always used dish soap (Dawn brand in the US) to was the bike and "pre"-degrease the drivetrain. Never saw a need for anything else. I also use Tang orange drink as my Carb drink. It was designed as a dehydrated orange juice for astronauts, and works pretty well on a bike ride as well.

    Some quality tricks here. I have a few things to add…
    Not all salts are the same! Salt for electrolyte use should not be table salt. Only use sea salt, ideally pink sea salt. Regular table salt is a lab or industrial created chemical and has nothing other than sodium, while sea salts have trace minerals including potassium and magnesium needed for electrolyte replacement, as well as others for effective and balanced absorption.
    Grease usually solves the creaks but we often use way too much. This only makes things dirty by attracting dirt. This also goes for greasing bearings. It doesn’t take much to do the job and using more actually adds stiction and slows things down rather than speeding up. I like to use a thinner grease in the cold seasons and and a thicker grease in the warm or hot seasons as the temps change the lubricity of the grease.
    When washing your bike don’t use a power sprayer as it forces water past bearing seals and wrecks the grease or oil lubricant. You can use compressed air to dry parts after washing for lubing, especially chains! Furniture polish, the kind that sprays on the you wipe off, works great in rain and muddy conditions to keep the much from sticking.

    For a truly sparkling clean chain try ScrewFix No Nonsense degreaser with a chain cleaning tool. It’s harsh but the chain comes out sparkling after a few rotations. Just remember it doesn’t need to be cleaned that well too often as it strips the lube from the rollers. 80/90W gear oil makes a smooth running drive train just as motorcycle chain manufacturers recommend.

    Sponges pick up dirt which then sits on the surface, causes scratches. In the car industry, sponges are evil. Microfibre mitts or clothes are much better as the dirt isn’t on the surface. A soft bristle brush is perfect for bike frames, handle bars and seats.

    Plot your route so that you go past a local EG garage that has both a jet wash and Starbuck. Use the foam lance to clean the bike and the low pressure rinse. Bike clean, wheel it over to Starbucks, grab a coffee and wait for it to dry. Get home, clean the chain and relube. Saves an hour faffing in the winter.

  • @UnivegaSuperSport
    @UnivegaSuperSport 2 года назад +1

    The lube that most good chains come with is excellent and lasts a long time, but it comes ALL OVER the chain. Lube on the outside of the chain acts like fly paper for dirt. The same for cog and chain wheel teeth and derailleur pulleys.
    When you get a new chain, wipe off just the outside of it with a rag soaked in rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. The outside of the chain will feel oily after the first ride even though you wiped it off. Excess lube from inside the chain has being flung to the outside as the chain goes around its path. Wipe off new chains with the soaked rag after each of the first two rides. After that, all excess lube should be gone and the outside will attract less dirt staying clean longer.
    When re-lubing a chain, drip it down on the links at the bottom run as they exit the rear derailleur pulley. This way the lube hits the inner run of links and will get flung inside and through the link. Don't drip it down onto the links as they pass over the cassette. It just gets the cassette soaked with oil and attracts dirt.

      @@stevek8829 There are almost countless combinations of ions referred to as salts. e.g. "Although the principal component is sodium chloride, the remaining portion can range from less than 0.2 to 10% of other salts. These are mostly calcium, potassium, and magnesium salts of chloride and sulfate with substantially lesser amounts of many trace elements"

    The 2:1 split is important for lots of reasons. Dextrose works if you can’t get malto but having the fructose is key for the ratio to work, maximise the carb absorption and therefore usability. Buy malto from a reputable source as there is a lot of very low grade product out there. Not all maltodextrin is equal. At all. Yeah boring comment I know. But hey

    I buy grease at auto supply stores. You can get way more grease for way less money than bike specific grease, and you can get the same type of grease if you check the labels.
    If you are out on a ride and the cleat develops a squeak sometimes you can get enough lube off the chain to rub on the cleat or pedal to silence it. To get the grease off you finger rub it on the crown of the tire. The finger will be cleaner and the grease will rub off the tire quickly
    If you have skidded to a stop and have a flat spot on the tire nearly to the casing but the rest of the tire is good, use a bit of Shoo Goo to build the flat spot back up, and keep riding. If the casing is wrecked trash the tire.

    • @ruggericci

      replace it buddy. it is important that the tyre structure is pristine. you don't want it explode while riding. i rode a lot of tubulars, and they explode when not replaced timely, trust me, it is not a nice experience even if the glue keeps them on. a clincher most probably fails in such a way that looses any grip to wheel, it can have severe consequences even at low speeds

      There is nothing wrong with washing up liquid, it’s a myth that won’t go away that it is damaging. Bennetts Insurance recently did a huge round up of motorcycle degreasers which involved leaving bare metal parts for an extended period in each of the cleaners and washing up liquid was one of the safest to use. People read that they have salts in them and think it’s the same as salt that goes on the road and rusts everything it touches, this is not true. Cheap washing up liquid is fine and safe to use

    Instead of the Candy bag, wrap 2 or 3 turns of duct tape around each of your tyre levers ! (watch Chris Horner's saddle bag video --> ruclips.net/video/RwKeAhSwXI4/видео.html )
    You can buy fructose in 1 Kg bags at your grocery store (here at Metro grocery stores in Quebec anyway). I put in half the fructose with respect to the sugar. My 1st 850 ml bidon has 45g of sugar, 22 g of fructose & half of a lime's juice, completed with water. My 2nd 850ml bidon has the other half of the lime's juice + only water. The lime juice is basically NOT to taste the bidon plastic, I never managed to find a bidon that doesn't taste and that is cheap enough - I use Decathlon's bidons.

    I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but car shampoo adds wax to your bike which protects your paintwork. Dishwashing liquid removes the wax from your paintwork leaving it exposed to the elements. You should never wash the paintwork with dishwashing liquid, only the drivetrain.

    can you use the alcohol on your chain and casette?

    • @UnivegaSuperSport
      @UnivegaSuperSport 2 года назад

      It won't work well to get dirty lube off off a chain or cassette. Mineral spirits or Simple Green will get the oily dirt off. Rubbing alcohol can then be used on the chain as a final wash to get the mineral spirit or Simple Green residue off the chain, leaving it clean and dry. That's the best state for the chain to be in just before re-lubing it.
      Rubbing alcohol can be used on disk brakes and rims to clean them. Mineral spirits or Simple Green would leave a residue that could cause squealing.

    The best cycling hack is to have A lightweight cycle, not too aero or exotic but preferably lightweight like aluminium bike with decent gears and brakes. It is much better than a cheap heavy bike with bad brakes and gears. Or even better is to get a road Ebike. Don't have to be all sweaty and miserable on a cheap heavy bike with unsafe brakes and unreliable gears, ruining the cycling experience.
