Okay, okay, I get it. I accidentally called 'Luffy' by the name 'Monkey' a few times. Give me a break! I've had two days with this story, most of you have had decades! Give a new fan some time to get things right, geez!
Haha, of all the mistakes one can do I think this would be quite the small one. Welcome to the strawhats, Dan! (Usopp is the crewmember where ppl are the most split I'd say, especially early on, so nothing strange if you didn't warm up top him in S1.
That and the, “yeah I know I don’t know anything, but that’s the fun of it” remark, really let’s you know that the core spirit of the show hit the mark
the fact that you don't know One Piece makes your opinion even more valid than ours (longtime fans), one of the points of this live action is making the fanbase bigger and I think will succeed. Most of the fans are not going to spoil it, it's an amazing story and we want people to enjoy it, seeing someone watch it for the first time always makes me happy
Agreed. I'm seeking out a whole bunch of none-one piece fans for this *specifically* because they don't come into this with an expectation of what one piece *should* be, and instead they approach it on their own merits.
When Dan said about Coby ”he has a will that’s stronger than almost anybody else in the show”, I couldn’t help but smile. He can’t know how spot on those particularly choice of words are. 😉
Well except for Luffy obviously, who literally has the strongest in the series. Which is part of why Coby is his fanboy. The other part is his emotional intelligence and positivity.
This is probably the second hardest anime to adapt (hardest being DBZ) but they managed to pull it off. They even got Arlong’s laugh right even though it was brief. I’d say Usopp is the only character they need to work on bc he always seems be apart of the crew but not really. It’s really going to be interesting to see how they do Chopper, Franky, and Brook. Also are they gonna make Robin black (dark skin) pre time skip and white post time skip like in the anime lol.
@@alcoballic9593it is. It’s hard to adapt. I showed my wife two part. The boat getting cut in half. She said yeah they adapted that good. She said she liked it’s kinda goofy and still watchable. Obviously she loves Nami lol 😂
@@Theb0YWh0lived1Yeah, having a show runner who has been a fan for 20+ years and has an understanding of the series really helped with altering the series to fit a live action tv show while still staying true to the source material.
Totally agree about Luffy's casting. His character is about half the reason I thought One Piece was impossible to adapt well a few years ago. I just did not believe anyone existed who could properly play the role. His casting was when I really started feeling hope.
I don't think anyone else could've properly played the role, Inaki was seemingly born to play this character and finding that one-in-a-million casting choice where there is legitimately no one out there who can play this role better was such a huge triumph of casting.
This is the real important stuff. Having people like you, knowledgable in the medium but completely new to the source material enjoying this, is what's gonna make or break this show. As a semi hardcore fan: I love this to bits.
I agree. I am just a casual fan (and was an adult when the anime started). I think that the Netflix version did a very good job of mixing-and-matching arcs of the anime. It was still a good story and provided little surprises to those familiar with the source material. I am one of those people who usually is really bothered by janky special effects, but I really enjoyed this series.
@@WarrenGdog28 I returned to the anime after watching the live-action. I now remember why I stopped all those years ago. The early arcs were aimed at a younger audiende, I couldn't watch at 1.5 speed, and, TBH, I am still bothered a bit by the fact that the Heroes are pirates and seem to kill a lot of marines (many of whom are probably "good guys" similar to Koby). That last bit is the kind of thing that tends to pop up in my brain during the foggy moments when I wake up in the middle of the night, though.
Long time fan(my wife even more so), the fact that those not familiar with the source material are engaged is honestly the best news I could’ve wished for. It’s a world I hope becomes as universal across the globe as LOTR, Star Wars, or Harry Potter.
Big One Piece fan here, glad Dan enjoyed the show. As much as I hope he gets into the anime and/or manga, but that's a massive commitment that I don't expect of him
100% Agree but history shows idiots are in charge: First time since The Lord of the Rings By Peter Jackson, someone took something goofy seriously enough to not treat it with ridicule or apathy. But instead treating it with the utmost care and attention to detail such that it springs a fiction world that is BELIEVEABLE. That is the biggest single most important thing i was told by a games producer once, and what it means is not that we can buy a character or that we believe the premise of the show... but that the entire Míse en Scene is cohesive enough to believe that it could exist. The Goofyness works because it doesn't compromise because someone says its silly and will scare off costumers, but instead is being embraced and worked on until it becomes Believeable. Instead of making Gandalfs costume silly and looking like a kids halloween costume for Merlin, etc. The Lord of the Rings took it seriously enough to treat everything as if it existed in the real world, and that is why One Piece works. No messing with the script without good competent reasoning, and no half done job, the commitment to say we are gonna do this, and we are gonna make it the best version we possibly can, and if it doesn't work, we redo it until it does, before we publish it. That is what it truly means to respect the source material, and yes I REALLY REALLY WISH that people at taken notes from Peter Jackson in 2001, but then Amazon Came along with their shit last year... and that's the exact example of someone who is in it for the money, not for the art, or care of an adaptation, and do fucked up shit to the IP that just fucks with the integrity and belivability of the world in favour of activism such as "Woke". And if the material is good then it doesnt need to be woke, I am so happy that all the characters for once piece got race appropriate castings and they found characters that ACTUALLY look like them in the show. Despite Usopp being slightly "rascist" drawn, they didn't try to make him look like the show they just cast someone who looked like him naturally without the charicaturing, the one thing i think doesn't work is the overthetop geekyness amongst some flashback interactions, but it's not ruining anything, and it feels a bit "acted", and the illusion breaks that it could be real, but thats maybe 3-8 scenes in all the episodes. I think the brilliance here is the fact that even manga panelling is used at times with close ups, and thats really cool, and I hope they do more of that, that works really well. Although i hope they don't overuse it and make it cliché either. Normally Manga charaters look weird in Live Action, but they have really done their homework, and i think the Costume department and the special effects department are reaching out for an emmy here... this is really well made, and not something that is easy, in fact this is the ONLY life action Anime I have ever seen that includes fan movies such as the dragonball shorts that came out of an indie studio and released as teasers on RUclips, It was visually okay, but it still clearly showed that they were Indie and on a budget... give the same kind of people a budget, and you got something like One Piece, and you give someone who doesn't understand any of this rights to a movie and money and you get DragonBall the movie ... not the fanmade one...
I dunno, a lot of the stuff that was cut seemed that it would have been cg heavy, and would have been really expensive. Such as richie, hachi and momo. If they get a bigger budget for season 2 they can add all those thing back in; hachi and momo being away but chasing them down for half an episode cause of what they did. And richie can show up again with buggy; and they need a bigger cg team and to spend more money on cg anyway for next season with what happens onward in the show.
@@matthewcheng4158 I saw some fan made versions and one that looked similar to detective Pikatchu looked the best. The snail phones and news gulls don't seem off so that's promising.
@@dadante2536 hopefully they get the budget increase or find a way to lower the cost of CGI for Copper. he is going to be expansive and its not going to be easy for them to managing the budget for season 2. they did a great job balancing the budget for first season hopefully they do it again without ruining the show.
@@matthewcheng4158Chopper also has a hybrid form in which he has a more human like body. They could make him look like this most of the time in Season 2 so he relies much less on CGI.
There are far more people in the world who’ve never seen or read any of this huge series than who have, making Dan’s opinion and critique extremely valuable. It’s great to see a truly good adaptation.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. As a casual fan, I was happy with what we got, and can rest assured that we are most likely getting a second season with the reported numbers.
I’m a casual fan. Didn’t heard of one piece until this year. I liked it. The changes are good for me. I like how they made it it’s own thing for an adaptation.
One thing that Dan didn't touch on that I think helps sell the show is the music. The music was freaking excellent and did a terrific job at capturing the spirit of adventure, which is key to One Piece's story. It felt like slightly goofier and more playful Pirates of the Caribbean, and that is not a bad thing at all. That closing song, "My Sails Are Set," is an absolutely beautiful piece of music that is both emotional and adventurous.
a very neat detail that probably all long time fans were giddy hearing it. on the luffy flashback scenes on the bar you can hear a background music called "Binks Sake/Binks Brew", which is an in universe song that has a lot of lore behind it!
I tear up when we are played as merry sails the first time, it just feel so right and I just love how it makes long time viewer notice the little hints and be happy without spoiling the story. It just beautiful.
When Merry first sails and at the end of the season they’re playing the first opening song from the anime We are! I just couldn’t stop smiling. Such a perfect choice that immediately conveys the sense of adventure.
it's so wholesome, i can't 😂😂😂 we used to call him "ruffy" when i first met the straw hats. this live action was great, has minor flaws but holy cow has it exceeded expectations.
As a long time fan, I’d argue you are a huge part of the target audience. We’ve been trying to introduce One Piece to the US for years, so a quick live action intro could really help showcase the good vibes it has to offer
That tightrope inaki walks is crazy because yeah I did not like him in the clips and trailers and honestly didn’t see him as luffy. But seeing him in the actual show and interacting with the crew, I was completely sold by ep3 and can’t wait for season 2
I'm in the same boat as you--I went into this blindly. The only reason I watched is because I saw the trailer and Luffy intrigued me. I absolutely loved it!! I enjoyed every character, every episode, every storyline. I hope those who are super familiar with the source material allow themselves to enjoy this for what it is and not get hung up on comparing everything. I can't wait to rewatch it and I'm excited for season 2!
You can never please everybody, but it's a good sign that the general consensus is positive. There were some major changes to the plot to fit what is essentially the prologue of One Piece in 8 episodes, but the show stayed true to the character stories and motivations so I and many other fans are still very happy.
I couldn’t help but compare and be disappointed wh certain screens didn’t hit me as hard, etc. But I enjoyed it overall and I’m glad to hear that the faults I see aren’t necessarily there for all viewers.
As a big One Piece fan, I think this strikes a good balance of keeping the most important elements while making a lot of changes to suit the format and the condensed time they have to work with. Some purists are going to be upset at how much they changed and left out, but for me it was enjoyable to see the things they expanded on like all the added Coby stuff and giving Kaya much more screentime. One of my favorite little additions was Buggy's captive audience, it's such a creative expansion on his circus theme.
Agreed. Expanding on Koby was something that this show did better than the anime. Also give props to the fisherman makeup crew and the casting/acting of Arlong. Really all the villains were great but Arlong stood out to me.
One thing i dont like about it is the amount of important scenes they cut. Sanji, ussop, nami and luffy suffered alot from this(mainly because they had to cram so much info in 8 hours of runtime) thier character aren't really as fleshed out as in the anime. Lets take for exampla sanji. Due to don crieg not showing up at baratie luffy shining moment at baratie didn't exist, the reason why sanji even joined the crew is because of how determined both zoro and luffy were to achieve thier dreams (sanji wasn't even watching zoro vs mihawk in the LA) him joining the crew in the live action lacks impact or motive. But overall i enjoyed the LA, I'll still give it a solid 7/10
@@sogekinggg I think Baratie suffers the most from the condensed runtime for the reasons you described, which is probably why Dan felt he wasn't as fleshed out in season 1 as some others. He should get plenty of time to shine in season 2 though.
@@sogekinggg Agreed. I’d say Sanji suffered the most from the 8 episode season. Although we know there’s much more to his backstory that will be flushed out later if the series makes it that far.
I enjoyed the earnest campyness of the show and the even more earnest wholesome vibe. It gets dark as hell but it never lets that feel like the point. Luffy is just a golden hearted character that believes in the best in the world around him and the show unabashedly puts that on display without feeling a need to cynically tear it down, and his relentlessly good nature has a natural effect on bringing out the best in everyone around him. I feel like a lot of modern media is almost scared to be that sincere in its optimism, like people will refuse to take a story seriously if we don’t make it cynical and cruel. Combine that with the shows inherent sense of fun and its just enjoyable to watch. By the end I was excited to see this found families next adventures.
This is spot on to what One Piece is in all of its forms/mediums. I'm really glad the show managed to capture this so well and, as you said, didn't feel the need to tone it down or make cynical jokes about their sincere moments.
I have to commend Netflix for what they were able to achieve here. To attempt to remake of a much-beloved anime/manga using a bunch of unknowns (as you pointed out) was a huge gamble. What also shouldn’t be ignored is the writing. They took 48-episodes of the anime series and condensed it into 8 while not losing the heart of the original was quite a feat. The casting, as you said, was great. That’s been the problem with some of the live-action remakes.
My only issue with the live version, Luffy was portrayed as scared/nervous and unsure about beating Arlan. "Maybe I can't beat you" Luffy would never would have said that. But only in the live action
I don’t think he was scared or nervous in that scene. Nothing about his tone of voice or body language gave me that impression. I too find the line itself weird , but never in the fight is he shown to be unsure through his actions. I think he just realized that the best way to beat Arlong was to collapse the building around him, thus simultaneously defeating the evil and destroying the symbol of Nami’s captivity.
Personally as someone who hasn't seen the anime, I really like this show. I think with the devil fruit powers this works better as an anime, BUT the actors are really good and I see why these characters are beloved and think for the first season at least being about how these five become a crew, I think it nails in that regard thanks to whats impressive they can do in live action and getting people, like me, who feel like 1,000 episodes it alot to catch up on, so finding a new audience this way works
if the stars some fricking how alligns and we get to see the show go all to the end of the story, we will probably have a much more managable episode count!
One Piece is a really intimidating fandom to get into. This show seems like a great gateway for people who aren't quite ready to commit to 1000+ episodes.
Don't worry, the focus on character doesn't drop off. The crazy powers are always just set dressing, jokes or plot motivators. The show never feels like it's just a power fantasy.
@@davidwilson6577 While technically true, Oda has a thing for introducing and developing new characters while leaving all the old ones relatively static.
I've been so let down by franchises and worlds that I've loved as I've grown up (Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Star Trek) that I was craving something new to sink my teeth into. To really get invested in. When I saw this was coming out and that fans were very hopeful with the casting and what they've seen I started reading the manga, and reading, and reading and I'm hooked. I'm only 176 chapters in (well beyond season 1 of the live action) and while there's liberties taken, as an adaptation it works very well. I'm relatively new to anime and manga too (I've bounced off One Piece in the past) but now that I accept what it is, and I go along for the ride I find that it's very enjoyable and fun and that's what I need after being so disappointed in things I've loved since the 80's. #KeepOnePieceWeird
Welcome to the one piece fandom...story has ability to get better and also make what you've read better so at one point you'll wanna go back and reread. Enjoy the journey
I actually think your opinion is the most valid as a long term fan! I have been following One Piece for 21 years now, and to see new people get what it is about is the best proof of the adaptation being great
As someone who has read the manga for almost 20 years I enjoyed the live action immensly. It really brought to life those pivotal emotional moments that I read so long ago, and to my surprise I cried several times watching this. I was really curious how someone who hasn't read the manga or watched the anime would think about the live action version, so thank you very much for the review!
Been on One Piece since October 2004 at age 23, I gotta say the live action puts 20 years of being a fan really worth it. I never imagined making it this far. I want to see this series being a success to make it to Laugh Tale.
Loved hearing this review from the perspective of a One Piece newbie who's also an experienced reviewer like yourself. As a One Piece fan for 20 years, for me this was an absolute jewel of a little show. I smiled the whole time. It was just FUN. They managed to find a right balance between the over-the-top original material from the manga and a more grounded live action approach. The new scenes they added were great and at times even surpassed the scenes they straight-up adapted from the manga pages.
I struggled watching the cartoon, but I love the live action show!! This was so much fun The actor playing Luffy is so perfect. I can't wait for a season 2!
I can't believe how good this is. I'm a huge OP fan and I love that finally everyone is part of this fun world. It's so fun seeing everyone react to this.
I'm just going to say it, this live action adaption is f#@king awesome. It's like some smashed together Pirates of the Caribbean and the anime One Piece. I hope we get more seasons.
As someone who started One Piece when Covid hit, read the Manga when it hit chapter 1000 and watched the anime when it also hit 1000, the live action has made me somehow even more excited about One Piece then ever before. I've told literally everyone I know to watch it and give it a try, and I'm so glad to see so many people who have never heard of One Piece or even anime enjoy it. My mom enjoyed One Piece.
A good fandom would not snub newcomers just cuz they dunno the full manga lore. Good fandom would b happy that the IP is gaining new attention. Good fandom would also not give spoilers to newcomers (unless they asked for it) cuz that’s just the honor code. I have faith that One Piece has a healthy fandom ✌️ happy viewing, y’all!
I love reading/watching reviews from people who have no idea what One Piece is or have little exposure to One Piece. Whether its positive/negative review it's interesting to see how people interpret this world. Glad you liked the show even as a long time One Piece fan I'm excited for the new fans even if their source is the live action. I too hope they make a second season, cause I'll tell you the adventure is just beginning.
This adaptation was made for people who HAVE NOT watched or read one piece. While the show is being praised by fans, its the non fans who are enjoying it the most. The show is structured very much so you get tempted to go to the anime/manga for a more enhanced experience.
I have some nitpicks and some genuine gripes, but overall I'm deeply impressed with that they did. Recommended to fans and and anyone who wants some whimsy and fun and genuine heart. The cast is basically perfect.
I think the reason sanji felt like his story in Barstie was lacking a little was because of what they had to cut out of the arc to make it fit the 8 ish hour runtime. It was the weakest part because it takes away a lot of sanji’s motivation for joining the crew. As the show makes it seem like luffy just asked him and he was like sure let’s go.
I think also it's because the LA is taking into account things from future arcs that usually we wouldn't have know yet at the time but that we do know now. So I think they are probably hinting at a lot oh Sanji's backstory we get later in WCI.
I actually disagree with this point. I really like how they incorporated Sanji and Zeff by having them help a dying Zoro. It ramps up the conflict between Zeff and Sanji by giving him a viable means of escape. It does all this in a very efficient and show-don’t-tell manner that shonen is often seemingly allergic to.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I do hope they make at least season 2 because the Alabasta saga is some of the best one piece. It cranks the scale up to nations and wars and secret history, so good!
@@RohanPinto1I'd love to see what they could do post-time skip as well. They could fix a lot of the problems with the anime, because my biggest issue with those arcs was how long they dragged, and if anything the live action pace is moving too fast so it could be more enjoyable.
Not getting into spoilers for the comment section obv, but considering the further it goes along the harder it would be to adapt on so many levels, I do think Loguetown to Alabasta is very feasible so long as they can figure out how to tackle the potential budget nightmare that is a certain character
@@Katt1721 yeah, given he would be entirely CGI it’s key that they make him convincing. Unless they find some way to do it practically with a puppet. But even so, with all the fight scenes CGI will have to be pretty damn good to pull it off.
Yeah, I've been thinking about that too... There are actually two characters in the Alabaster arc that fit that description, but I'm afraid, they're gonna cut the second one for exactly that reason. Anyways, the budget needs to explode with every season, no matter how they decide to adapt. This was merely a proof of concept 😅
I'm relieved that you liked it; I'm a huge fan (in Japan) and I loved the adaptation, but I was worried what non-fans would think. I hated Coby at the beginning of the anime, but I felt he was a bit more likeable here. Actually, if you said you were a fan, I would have believed you. I agreed with everything you said, and I think the show was perfectly cast. The only character I didn't really connect with was young Usopp.
I'm so glad you chose to review this! I love your reviews and the fact that you had no prior experience with One Piece makes your insights even more valuable due to the lack of fan bias/nostalgia.
I'm like you Dan...a much younger co-worker told me to start watching this anime show just a couple months ago, but I only watched the very first episode. Never even heard of it before. Was on the fence about this show, but your review has me delightfully intrigued to check it out! Thanks.
Like the Arcane series it's absolutely critical that people like you Dan can have the option of watching without bias, I'm a huge fan of One piece since 2010, i am caught up to the Manga, so this series and characters are close to my heart. So like Arcane I'm glad to hear that the show works for normal audience, I can't wait to see what they do next, I'm happy that they made the source material justice for the most part, the anime world can be a bit hard to get into, so I hope the show sucess let's to people to pick up the Manga or Anime.
Dan, please don’t let people tell you your opinions don’t matter, we’re here for your opinions no matter what. I’m a long time One Piece fan and I view the live action as an opportunity to introduce the series to newcomers. It’s very intimidating to start a manga or anime with 1,000+ episodes and chapters, so I think YOU are the primary target audience. They went above and beyond IMO by making interesting changes so anime-watchers and manga-readers can also relive this story for the first time. They also have a lot of references and tiny details that only we will understand the importance of. For that reason, bias and love for the series obviously included, I give this season a resounding 10/10. I didn’t think a live action one piece, or even anime in general, could be done with such love. The people behind and in front of the camera have clearly done their research or understand what this series is about from their own fanship.
I started watching One Piece when i was 6 years old back in October of 1999 and been watching it every Sunday ever since. I absolutely love the live action version. Yes, some serious fights were skipped, but for those long and detailed moments, we have anime. I want these series to continue. With the pacing this season was going, maybe we could see material from 1000 anime episodes in 10 seasons or so. I hope that happens.
Been a week to week OP guy for 20yrs. At risk of being swept up by my biases, I’ll say I’m so proud of the whole cast and crew who made OPLA. It brought me a lot of Joy.
I love how so many non anime fans are saying things like, “Usopp doesn’t really get to do much… he’s supposed to be the sniper but he doesn’t really do much sniping… it must be because he doesn’t work well in live action” etc. and we’re like… “nope…. That’s just Usopp… he runs away and hides, but then comes in clutch when it matters.” Lol
I think this was a great review Dan and I was really curious to see what someone like yourself had to say about it as I myself am a massive fan. I want more people to get into one piece who are not, and I think this show has the potential to do just that, but as someone who is all the way in I think it’s hard to judge whether it can actually do that and hearing your perspective on it is really helpful and insightful. I’m glad you enjoyed it and most of the material covered in this section of the story is only 53 episodes in the anime and 100ish chapters in the manga if you are interested in checking out the source!
I think the biggest strength with this adaptation is the way they've gone about pacing and structure. In under 10 episodes, they've effectively adapted 50 episodes of the anime, which would've aired over the course of an entire year as a weekly anime series. At that pace, adapting the entire franchise would still be long as hell, sure. But I think now more than ever, in this era of Hollywood constantly refusing to let franchises die, a TV series with enough source material to last 10+ years is exactly the kind of thing Netflix should be happy to play the long game with, assuming it retains viewership. They've got something good going with this, and I really hope they're able to produce a 2nd season that works just as strongly as this one.
Honestly I think the biggest issue with the One Piece anime is how much it drags everything out to avoid catching up to the source material. The manga is long but has for the most part a pretty brisk pace. I've never been able to get into the anime because the pacing is just awful. Even the latest batch of episodes I tried to download just to appreciate the sakuga animation only to find them literally replaying the same minute long scene three times in an episode just to pad out the runtime. I would much rather watch the slightly abridged live action adaptation, which despite being abridged also adds some new material that makes the story as a whole more cohesive and I feel are probably changes Oda would have included if he knew where he'd take the story that far in advance.
Very happy you enjoyed it. As a multi-decade fan of One Piece, I hope with you that the show continues and that they keep the magic that made this season work for both fans and new watchers. If you can find the time, I recommend reading the source material when you can, since you get a slightly different feel with the manga and you can consume it more at your own pace.
I think the fact that non fans can enjoy the show is the highest praise. Yes it was made for the fans but if we’re honest it was mostly to being in new people. So happy to hear the review :))
God this is surreal. I've been reading One Piece weekly since 2004 and spend far too much time watching One Piece RUclips content, so I'm definitely more on the "know every single thing that was going to happen" side of things. Dan, seeing you react to the story of OP from a totally clean slate is just so weird and cool and funny and impossible to describe. Honestly, surreal is the only word that will suffice. Anyway, as for the content of the show and your thoughts: I have many nitpicks about the adaptation, but this review is the most important I've heard so far. I really believe now that the show has succeeded in being accessible to normies. I can't see a world where this actually adapts the full story because it would either need to go on for too long and be prohibitively expensive, or they would start taking too many shortcuts and I think viewers would start to lose their investment. But I'm on board for as much as they can adapt with this level of care for the material, so bring on more seasons! Couple last thoughts: it's so weirdly satisfying to hear you get hyped over Nami and Sanji's flashbacks and emotional payoffs because they are hands down my favorite parts of the East Blue saga. And Usopp. Poor poor Usopp . . . Without spoiling anything, I can say with confidence that your feelings on Usopp up to this point in the story mirror a HUGE amount of the fandom of the anime and manga. There is a bit more development for him in the battle with the fishmen in the manga, but it's a pretty well-known fact that most long-time fans took quite a bit more of the story to appreciate Usopp fully. I certainly did. Anyway, thank you from the bottom of my heart for this review, Dan. It's dumb that it means so much to me, but it really does. Final word of advice: do not watch the anime. For the amount of insanely good moments it brings, it gets horribly diluted with too much mid to pretty bad content that has kept it running for so damn long.
I think that your opinion as an "outsider" to One Piece is more valuable than that of a hardcore fan. I've seen it and I can tell how much attention and care went into it every little easter egg. But I want to know what someone completely new to the story thinks of it!
Your review is proof that more fans are being born from this new adaptation of the story. I am envious that you get to experience it as seasons come out and that anticipation and hype for new episodes.
both Ussop and Sanji makes sense to "fall flat" here at the start. both get their developments heavily on later arcs of the story. hell ussop jumps from the comic relief to one of the most beloved characters by the fandom in a very short spam of time
Idk, u can’t let 2 if the supposed main characters fall flat because “we may get a season 2 to develop them later.” Plus things like “why did sanji not Witness Zoros fight?” Come to mind
@@claymusicoff5663 i agree very much to the sentiment, and some small things that were sadly cut such as luffy punching the sea beast before leaving or sanji seeing the zoro fight or arlong seeing zoro's scars in absolute fear on "how da fuck are you still alive, you are a monster", but it would be pretty hard to add more ussop and Sanji development without shanking storylines laters hey don't get me wrong i would love if they did, just dont know myself how they would in the first place. its not like they are averse to big changes afterall, garp was supposed to properly show up in the story in post ennies lobby afterall
Just here to add that one of the main reasons this adaptation works so well is that Eichiro Oda, the author of One Piece himself, was heavily involved with the production. He personally aproved the casting of at least everyone in the main crew and also stated explicit conditions for the adaptation, like no romance subplots and similar
Yeah, it's so successful cause people simply will never admit they've wasted 20 years of their life reading a ridiculous and artistically ugly af pile of guano.
Them not explaining the super weird was a great move. Let the audience accept that this is a weird world with weird things and everyone in this world accepts it.
Most long time OP fans have been discussing every aspect, every chapter/episode, of OP for around 25 years now, we have experienced almost all kinds of reactions possible from various people who came aboard and joined us on this journey to find the One Piece, so from my experience, I can say on behalf of most OP fans, that opinion of a new fan watching One Piece for the first time always interests us more than someone like ourselves who already know about it. Also, I don't think any OP fan will intentionally spoil you on any future event but beware about videos/shorts/thumbnails/posts/tweets/articles/posters because *many* official OP related sites/platforms as well as OP fans/youtubers casually create and share One Piece related content on RUclips and other social media platforms without much care about spoiling new fans since its really difficult for them to promote their content about a such a long series without specifying what it is about in the title or thumbnail. I don't like this situation but that's how it is.
I absolutely love this review, as a OG one piece fan, I think it was the goal to bring in new fans to celebrate this amazing series with us. This show is something special man..
I would have been happy if it was even just passable, but it was actually good! I think the close up camera got a bit tiresome and some of the acting (particularly in flashbacks) was rough, but it didn't really negative impact the experience for me. I'm really impressed with how well they were able to compress the episodes without taking too much away, emotional impacts are lessened because of this because there isn't as much build up and story/world building but the story still feels entirely intact and I still felt some emotions.
I wouldn't be surprised if the manga finishes before a third season comes out, so I don't think that it will have anywhere near the issues that Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire had with the show outpacing the source, since it wouldn't be anywhere near the end. I'm not sure if you're looking for more anime recommendations Dan, but I would highly recommend Madoka Magica, the Monogatari series, and Katanagatari for series that are still shōnen while being quite different from most of the shōnen popular in the West.
Your opinion is actually the only one that matters. For many fans, a lot of backstories fell behind their original (time constraint, structuring) or maybe some literary depth was lost here and there (reorginizing the plot) but ofc it would when ure constantly comparing. Because appearently they all worked? Not just for you, but for other first timers on youtube as well. Suprising, and a relief
I am only on episode 3 but I really liked how very few people actually died. The heroes are actually heroic and love each other and fight the bad guys to win but they pull back a lot of times too, like at the fight with the ironjawed marine guy, could have chopped off his head but showed mercy. True its only mercy on the characters with plot armor but still. I loved how many emotional beats we got in just two episodes too. The backstory of Luffy is very cool and I liked how his dad let bad guys kinda run him over because he is trying to keep peace in his bar but once the bad guys went after his friends he had to kick ass. Again a moment that in another directors hands or studio is just an excuse to show randos being gutted and blood spray everywhere "becauses its ANIMMEEEEE" but goes to showing morality and what it can be to people. The difference is clear to this or something like Ahsoka, the emotions and characters are allowed to grow and be bolder than Ahsoka hides Ezra and Thrawn and we don't get to see them have growth.
You’re spot on. I think the live action One Piece is kind of the show we need right now. With all the current (mostly Disney) shows with ‘perfect’ characters that get no room to grow, a show like this is a breath of fresh air. They are at the beginning of their journey and have all the potential in the world to grow. Also, there is no cynicism or forced upon lesson in morality, the characters are just who they are, flawed but hopeful. Just one little thing, Shanks is not Luffy’s ‘dad’ but a pirate that Luffy admires. His dad will hopefully get introduced in season 2 if there is one 😉
@@jarosbodytko6462 fun fact / easter egg: we already saw his dad at the execution, but sssht Edit: Oh god I just realized how many people would read this TOTALLY wrong who do not know anything about One Piece and think "yeah HE must be his dad"
Dan, as a total One Piece beginner, I found this video quite useful. I woke up Sunday knowing 0.00% about One Piece, tried the first five minutes and was quite unsure. Call Me Chato is a very grumpy reviewer, but he gave it a green light, so I watched episode 1. I liked it but was confused, ended up watching Tekking101's very long episode 1 recap, after which I re-watched episode 1 and was fully locked in and loving it. Noticed your review just now, watched it, and I feel it is a great introduction to the show and a bit of the characters for people like me with low knowledge of the universe who would like a shorter introduction. Thanks! It's worth mentioning that there are plot and character details sprinkled in the show that set up or pay off bigger things, so it does warrant a bit more attention than many current shows .. but so far I am finding it well worth it.
8:20 Usopp was the strawhat who IMO suffered the most from the time restriction. Many of his defining moments had to be removed. In the original story Usopp learns Captain Kuro is about to attack with his whole pirate crew, which leads to Usopp's 1st defining scene: After nobody believes his warnings he starts breaking down in tears, grieving over not himself, but the village which will be destroyed. Despite his fear and despite knowing how weak he is he decides to make sure his warnings remain lies, by defeating Kuro and his pirates alone. The strawhats of course decide to help him. Another removed scene: When he is being hunted by Chew the fishman at Arlong Park, Usopp pretends to be dead using tomato sauce like in the live action. This decision makes way more sense in the original version where Usopp just wanted to get rid of Chew so he can safely walk back to his friends. On the way he is happily thinking to himself what lies he can just tell them so he doesn't seem like a coward and so he can excuse himself from helping to fight. He catches himself and has a moment of reflection where he realises he is nothing like the brave warrior he wishes to be and decides to chase back after the fishman with no idea how he could defeat him. He comes up with the idea to ignite Chew's alcohol on the spot, but it isn't enough to knock him out. Usopp then resorts to the most elegant means of combat known to man: while he is down, he repeatedly beats Chew over the head with a hamer.
I've been a fan for years but the show was still able to surprise due to them changing some events in small ways and some in huge ways while still making it work.
enjoyed it so much, finished all episodes in one sitting, of course, the devil fruit powers and feats are quite hard to pull off in live action but they did good, every episode puts a smile on my face as what the one piece world should, regardless of the hates and critism, the adventure feels and fun is there and that's what matters
My boyfriend has been watching the anime for years, but I was a complete newbie when we decided to watch the live action. It made me finally understand why fans dedicate so much time to this anime/manga. I would always watch little snippets of it and feel so lost and confused. This adaptation is very approachable!
I had never heard of one piece before despite having a childhood love of pirates but gave the show a go after the fantastic final trailer. I loved it. I will most definitely be getting the manga.
Great review! Welcome to the strawhat crew. Glad you enjoyed it. Anime and manga fan here started just a little bit before covid and am now fully caught up. This story should be experienced by all what ever medium it is.
Actually, Mackenyu (Zoro) is hardly a non-household name… in Japan, where he is quite well known. Anyway, like yourself, I know very little of One Piece (tried to start the manga a couple years ago but gave up 2 issues in and never watched the anime) but I thought the series, like many Japanese anime and manga, has a lot of heart and as such I think it was a dang good anime adaptation.
I didn't know that you plan to watch it. I am a long time fans and I am so curious about new viewer about this adaptation. I love it as a fans because it hits the emotional beats. I think your opinion is so valid because this adaptation really good at giving the plot into something digestible for new viewer. I teared up in many scene because of the nostalgia but also because it's explain a lot of things clearly for the new viewer, it gives me this satisfaction that it feels seamless. Thanks for the review Dan and I am so glad you love it. Also most of the cast has the same feels from the original, especially luffy feels like real luffy from manga and anime, it just felt real.
@@_jolie_All of the manga has value. You can't really skip it. Things you think you can skip actually have relevance later lol. That's the best and worst part
Started One PIece anything/everything in 2019. Many marathon binges since followed by many months of nothing. I loved how there was always more to watch during this time period. I caught up to the anime’s current airings a few months ago and am caught up to the manga’s current releases as of 2 months ago. I’ll say this: You had the exact same reaction to the Nami and Sanji backstory as me which is the exact point where the source material clicked with me and the motivation to get through 1000+ episodes/manga began. Additionally, you are in for a treat. And yes, the story will only get weirder - it is imperative that the show maintains its faith in the source material for this to succeed. Comparisons to GoT/ASOIAF is apt here, as you observed - especially with the legion of characters and geography, as well as other aspects I will not spoil. I am not sure how the show will juggle casts and characters in the future aside from ignoring/merging ala GoT. Even with some pruning, there still leaves so many characters that must remain. Lastly, have patience with your current least favorite character. It will be difficult.
You are notably right about Sanji getting a lot of character development later in the show. I don’t think you have a sense of just how much later though! Sanji joined the crew when I was in kindergarten and we got his full backstory while I was graduating college…
The fact that you find it amazing is truly incredible. As a devoted One Piece fan, I noticed some additional scenes and subtle variations that weren't present in the anime or manga, which made the experience even more remarkable. I'm definitely proud to see that it's receiving such fantastic reviews.
As a long time fan I have to say that especially reviews of non fans of the series are interesting to me. Because I loved the show, but that may be just my bias and love for One Piece! I'm glad you liked the story overall, the One Piece world is huge (as you said) and we've only just seen a very small part!
I was looking for reviews from people who knew very little about one piece as i was very interested to hear their take. So thank you very much for this video. Loved hearing this perspective
I’m a MASSIVE One Piece fan and I’m glad you enjoyed the live action. I did too. The story you just saw was a great kicking off point for the series and I really hope everyone gets to see what else is to come.
No.
Sigh* I’ll get the discipline stick.
Thanks for watching dude
This is the most minor mistake you can make! Don't worry about it!
“Simultaneously risky, smart, dumb, and brave” is the perhaps most concise summary of Luffy’s MO 😂
I am glad that the "dumb" was left in!
Yo exactly was I was thinking. Based on that comment I think they nailed the context of Oda's One Piece lol
That and the, “yeah I know I don’t know anything, but that’s the fun of it” remark, really let’s you know that the core spirit of the show hit the mark
The whole character of luffy can be described by this 4 words
Don't forget hungry!... you know what never mind, let's just go with Dan's list.
the fact that you don't know One Piece makes your opinion even more valid than ours (longtime fans), one of the points of this live action is making the fanbase bigger and I think will succeed. Most of the fans are not going to spoil it, it's an amazing story and we want people to enjoy it, seeing someone watch it for the first time always makes me happy
Yeah you can tell he’s new to OP bc he called Luffy by his surname, Monkey. In anime the last (surnames) are first.
I loved the arabaster arc movie feel adding in new stuff while keeping story mostly the same speed up to 50 episodes into 90 mins
This, I love seeing new viewers reactions!
Agreed. I'm seeking out a whole bunch of none-one piece fans for this *specifically* because they don't come into this with an expectation of what one piece *should* be, and instead they approach it on their own merits.
@@XCC23same. And holy shit the positivity I've seen.
I like how they implement the bounty posters in the live action. As the villians tare them away from their intro. That added a lot of flare
It really set the tone in a weird way, and I mean that in the most positive way.
Great effect, I loved it!
When Dan said about Coby ”he has a will that’s stronger than almost anybody else in the show”, I couldn’t help but smile. He can’t know how spot on those particularly choice of words are. 😉
He will be surprised 😊
This adaptation happening only a few weeks after Koby had one of the most badass moments in the entire series has been great
The comments section looks like an esl class..
Well except for Luffy obviously, who literally has the strongest in the series. Which is part of why Coby is his fanboy. The other part is his emotional intelligence and positivity.
@@editing5157nah coby being a normal person then go on to become what he has later in the series really shows his will
I am a fan and I gotta admit, it blew away all my expectations. It was able to work on its own. The cast is primarily the reason it works for me.
It was also nice for once to to see a movie or tv show not spit in the face of its source material
Yes I loved it!
Totally feel you but he dang pretty dang good
Did*
I don't think anyone else could've properly played the role, Inaki was seemingly born to play this character and finding that one-in-a-million casting choice where there is legitimately no one out there who can play this role better was such a huge triumph of casting.
Agree im a casual fan and this is good stuff
It will be. Thank you GODA san!🙏
Big One Piece fan here, glad Dan enjoyed the show. As much as I hope he gets into the anime and/or manga, but that's a massive commitment that I don't expect of him
People should take notes from this, the pacing was better than I thought it would be considering how much they condensed into 1 season.
Yes. I hope they keep the hour plus episodes. It’s rushed but not rushed if it makes sense. Things cut out make sense to get through the arcs.
100% Agree but history shows idiots are in charge:
First time since The Lord of the Rings By Peter Jackson, someone took something goofy seriously enough to not treat it with ridicule or apathy.
Bro this live action take a years to make not weekly lmao
yeah I'm kind of amazed that it didn't constantly feel like it was moving at a breakneck pace. I think it could have used more time, for sure though.
And richie can show up again with buggy; and they need a bigger cg team and to spend more money on cg anyway for next season with what happens onward in the show.
the fact that dan was speaking praises for this show speaks volumes… i hope we get to season 2

There are far more people in the world who’ve never seen or read any of this huge series than who have, making Dan’s opinion and critique extremely valuable. It’s great to see a truly good adaptation.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. As a casual fan, I was happy with what we got, and can rest assured that we are most likely getting a second season with the reported numbers.
honestly, with what the second season could entail, could be twice as good as this
I’m a casual fan.
Every newbie Reactor I've seen has loved the music.
When Merry first sails and at the end of the season they’re playing the first opening song from the anime We are! I just couldn’t stop smiling. Such a perfect choice that immediately conveys the sense of adventure.

we used to call him "ruffy" when i first met the straw hats.
this live action was great, has minor flaws but holy cow has it exceeded expectations.
I had never heard of the show but I enjoyed it. Story made sense, characters were kool, action kept me entertained and the audio was beautiful
This is just the introduction. You're not ready for whats to come. If they get a season 2. Ofcourse you can also watch the anime
I was also a non-fan interacting w/ this IP for the first time ever. Go check out my Spoiler Review on my channel Take 254.
I haven't seen a single purist critisize it yet. I am not sure they exist.
You dont know how dark and how funny its gonna get from here.
This is spot on to what One Piece is in all of its forms/mediums. I'm really glad the show managed to capture this so well and, as you said, didn't feel the need to tone it down or make cynical jokes about their sincere moments.
Ah, this comment hits the spot. You are so god damn right.
I never in my life thought I'd hear Dan Murrell comment on the snail phones in one piece. What a time to be alive😂
I thought the megaphone and bluesnail was hilarious
I have to commend Netflix for what they were able to achieve here. To attempt to remake of a much-beloved anime/manga using a bunch of unknowns (as you pointed out) was a huge gamble. What also shouldn’t be ignored is the writing. They took 48-episodes of the anime series and condensed it into 8 while not losing the heart of the original was quite a feat. The casting, as you said, was great. That’s been the problem with some of the live-action remakes.
To be fair, they were ~20 minute eps vs ~60min ones, and the anime did have some filler scenes. Still did an impressive job.
I particularly like how they managed to introduce the marines this early on and interweaving them into the story in a way that works.
As a manga reader for so many years its nice to see so many new people join this journey
To say that Sanjis development gets pushed back is an understatement - takes like 800 chapters to get to his full backstory
I wonder how they gonna do the summit war lmao hahaha and of course I want to see the giants and papa whitebeard lmao
@@davidwilson6577 While technically true, Oda has a thing for introducing and developing new characters while leaving all the old ones relatively static.

Loved reading this
Welcome to the one piece fandom...story has ability to get better and also make what you've read better so at one point you'll wanna go back and reread. Enjoy the journey
If you want another manga recommendation that you would not be able to put down read Dandadan.
Please don't spoil anything for other people. Especially on a channel that's not targeted to OP fans only.
I was watching the 4Kidz dub back then good times
It's so fun seeing everyone react to this.
this is my vibe right now.
Hey you were really lucky. Binge-watching one piece is the best. The trill at the end of some episodes gives you really goosebumps like no other show
A good fandom would not snub newcomers just cuz they dunno the full manga lore.
Yeah, I think 10 episodes would’ve been better for this show. But it’s still very impressive what they managed to pull off.
I think having Sanji and Zeff watch the Zoro Mihawk fight, with the associated commentary would have helped reinforce Baratie’s themes more.
It cranks the scale up to nations and wars and secret history, so good!
i wish they reach marineford, that is the best
Gotta admit it, in-between Stranger Things and AI generated Gal Gadot films Netflix takes some mad admirable swings ❤
As a fan of the original manga and anime, the live action was an absolute joy for me to watch.
I'm so glad you chose to review this! I love your reviews and the fact that you had no prior experience with One Piece makes your insights even more valuable due to the lack of fan bias/nostalgia.
Monkey D is the surname!! 😂😂 Luffy is his name!! In Japanese surname comes first and they kept it as such!!!!
I really appreciate your take as someone who knew nothing about OP. The fact you enjoyed the show anyway is a really good sign.
We don't get Sanji's full backstory until WAY later, unless they change something.
Nope. Dan, watch the anime.
Risky dumb smart and brave is exactly how I would describe monkey d Luffy soooo it was the best decision to portray him that way
I think that your opinion as an "outsider" to One Piece is more valuable than that of a hardcore fan. I've seen it and I can tell how much attention and care went into it every little easter egg. But I want to know what someone completely new to the story thinks of it!
If you want more non-fan reviews of the live action, go check out my Spoiler Review on Take 254 ❤
That review of Koby is so correct it’s like you’re up to date on the manga 😂 they must have really did his character perfectly
Your review is proof that more fans are being born from this new adaptation of the story. I am envious that you get to experience it as seasons come out and that anticipation and hype for new episodes.
both Ussop and Sanji makes sense to "fall flat" here at the start. both get their developments heavily on later arcs of the story. hell ussop jumps from the comic relief to one of the most beloved characters by the fandom in a very short spam of time
Idk, u can’t let 2 if the supposed main characters fall flat because “we may get a season 2 to develop them later.”
Plus things like “why did sanji not Witness Zoros fight?” Come to mind
@@claymusicoff5663 i agree very much to the sentiment, and some small things that were sadly cut such as luffy punching the sea beast before leaving or sanji seeing the zoro fight or arlong seeing zoro's scars in absolute fear on "how da fuck are you still alive, you are a monster", but it would be pretty hard to add more ussop and Sanji development without shanking storylines laters
hey don't get me wrong i would love if they did, just dont know myself how they would in the first place. its not like they are averse to big changes afterall, garp was supposed to properly show up in the story in post ennies lobby afterall
God Ussop!
Just here to add that one of the main reasons this adaptation works so well is that Eichiro Oda, the author of One Piece himself, was heavily involved with the production. He personally aproved the casting of at least everyone in the main crew and also stated explicit conditions for the adaptation, like no romance subplots and similar
Spoiler alert, it’s the most successful manga ever for a reason. Welcome to the crew everyone 🏴☠️
Being in the top ten of all-time best selling authors list isn’t too shabby of company either.
That’s not a spoiler! 😂
Wait so now
i have to watch more of one peice
After just watching 1073rd episode
@@jarosbodytko6462 fun fact / easter egg: we already saw his dad at the execution, but sssht
Edit: Oh god I just realized how many people would read this TOTALLY wrong who do not know anything about One Piece and think "yeah HE must be his dad"
@@jarosbodytko6462 you likely won’t see his dad, but you will see someone who, if a popular fan theory is to be believed, is his mother.
In the original story Usopp learns Captain Kuro is about to attack with his whole pirate crew, which leads to
Usopp's 1st defining scene:
After nobody believes his warnings he starts breaking down in tears, grieving over not himself, but the village which will be destroyed. Despite his fear and despite knowing how weak he is he decides to make sure his warnings remain lies, by defeating Kuro and his pirates alone. The strawhats of course decide to help him.
Another removed scene:
When he is being hunted by Chew the fishman at Arlong Park, Usopp pretends to be dead using tomato sauce like in the live action.
"maybe Sanji gets some development in later seasons" - well, yes, but actually no
I've been a fan for years but the show was still able to surprise due to them changing some events in small ways and some in huge ways while still making it work.
its good to know a newcomer's perspective as well. good stuff
Season 1 is just the prologue - the live action covers chapters 1-95 and the series is on chapter 1090 - its such a great series.
I recommend watching the “ep of east blue” It’s basically a one piece abridged anime movie of same events from Netflix adaptation
enjoyed it so much, finished all episodes in one sitting, of course, the devil fruit powers and feats are quite hard to pull off in live action but they did good, every episode puts a smile on my face as what the one piece world should, regardless of the hates and critism, the adventure feels and fun is there and that's what matters
Keyword in Japan tho. This OPLA are marketed more to international audience even Oda admit to it.
Thus mackenyu are non household name.
@@gjulia312It’ll help in the West once the connection to Sonny Chiba is more established.

I’m glad fans are loving it, but man it is very much a live action anime and holds all of those issues for me lol
Great review. I also came in as a brand new fan of the One Piece. I was invested in the story and characters. Looking forward to season 2!
Every normie is watching 1piece. Id like to know if robin and nami are done justice with their curves or not
To be honest don't, there are a lot of fanservice but not in the women, lets SEE if in seson two with Robin
Nope. Probably not likely to happen until maybe Hancock lol
I only know the ladies from too much egirls tiktok. But season 2, I think that's a bit of stretch
