I went to see jt on Friday. Honestly, I was very hesitant about Wicked until the reviews came out and had no intention to see it until I heard the reviews. It was a great movie. As someone who also likes the Broadway show, I’m curious to see what they will do with the second act which has always been a bit rough and rushed. It was a great movie worth seeing in a theater.
People who hate musicals: "Adaptation of a Broadway show? No thanks. Can't stand all that singing." Also people who hate musicals: "Singing animated characters? Take my money!"
Is always like that. It is just like "Super Hero movies are dead". Everytime there is two or three flops in the genre in a roll they say that. For the last 25 years ever since X-men begin the new generation of super hero movies. No one notice that those flops happen to be horrible movies and that maybe people are not tired of super hero movies, but of bad super heroes movies. The same with movies. People went into crisis mode because Furiosa and Fall Guy flop. Well, maybe dont do a Mad Max movie without Max and maybe there is a reason why 90s actions movies belong to the 90s and dont try to do one with a huge budget today.

I think Wicked is also holding so well because even people who did go to opening weekend are also going _back_ for repeat viewings. Not sure how many people are going to rewatch Moana 2, but it'll be interesting to see.
@@nubby2790 According to Box Office Mojo's Monday numbers this week, both films earned around 5-and-half million for the day. So the domestic gap between the two may be lessening quickly.
After a few less-than-pleasant theater experiences at the beginning of the year, I drastically cut back on the number of movies I wanted to see in theaters, really only seeing a few of the "tent poles" to avoid spoilers. But Wicked definitely got me remembering how much fun a GOOD experience can be and I decided to take my nephew to see Moana while I was visiting for Thanksgiving. The movie was eh, but I think we've got a new tradition.
We didn’t have as much family as normal this year down for Thanksgiving so we went out for dinner and then did a movie on Thanksgiving for the first time as a family. Did Wicked and I loved it (musical junkie, but had never seen Wicked and didn’t have a connection to it, but was super impressed) and the Thanksgiving movie is a super fun family event.
As a lover of Agatha All Along, I’m very happy to hear that the audience was large and grew as the show went on I want Disney/Marvel to hear that and give us more content of that level of quality
May to August: Austin Powers, The Fifth Element, Hercules, Men in Black, Contact, Air Force One, Conspiracy Theory, etc... Yet Nostalgia Critic focuses on the bad releases and includes that year in his "Dark Age of Movies" video.
Here in Europe, I can tell you that the hype here for Wicked is immense, but it still has not released in most of the EU. I would expect that when it does this coming week and the week after we could see maybe even a slight increase in its international business if it can replicate its great hold in America in other places where it's already opened.
There's also a big issue here, a lot of countries are releasing a fully dubbed version, songs and all, and that's just a huge turn off for everyone... At least here in Italy, where the dubbed songs are awful and OV screenings aren't as common as the rest of Europe
European here too and I wouldn't call it "immense"... For example, my social circle of 20-30 year-olds knows about it but none of us is really familiar with the Wizard of Oz or the original musical (which instead are both American staples) so we're more like "oh cool, we could watch it" rather than "omg so hyped". My local cinema isn't even showing it. Just Moana and Gladiator II.
Such an exciting weekend to be a part of. Looking for seats in my market for Wicked and Moana 2 proved difficult, but made it out to both in very packed houses.
The Matrix reloaded , Pirares of the Carribean Dead mans Chest, Iron man 2 and Tranformers revenge of the fallen all did better than the first movie at the box office, despite not being as well reviewed as the first. So I think Moana 2 falls into this same category where the goodwill from the first movie and desiree to see the next installment is strong enough to overcome any concerns about a decline in quality. However if there is a 3rd and 4th Moana movie, and they are not as good either, that could be where we could see the box office start to fall (similar to what happended to the later matrix, transformers moviers for example).
There's a general pattern for series, franchises, etc, where the box office for one instalment is, if anything, more correlated with the quality of the previous instalment than with its own - unless a movie is so good that everyone's talking about it, people who didn't like the previous one probably won't bother - they'll check it out sooner on streaming, but won't make an effort to catch it in cinemas - but unless it's getting terrible reviews, someone who liked the last one will probably still go to see the new one.
Amazing as always Dan. I think Moana was underrated when it came out and a lot of people discovered after it came out so Moana 2 probably had a lot of good coming into theaters.
Me too! I didn't watch (nor do I plan to), but I didn't want anymore blood on the water. I realized it was a hit when I got back to my classroom on Monday. High school kids were raving about this movie 😂

Moana 2 will be my 93rd theater-going experience in 2024 tomorrow. I'm running out of interesting releases to reach 100 before the end of the year. I might have to go see Mufasa after all...
I wonder if Wicked held so well due to people going back to see it again. I returned for a second viewing and I can't remember the last time I saw a new movie twice in the cinema in the space of a week.
Finally! A cumulative, year-to-date total box office chart is exactly what I've felt has been missing for a long time. Please continue to show that chart, Dan, at least monthly.
I finally was able to see Wicked with the family last night (Monday), and the theater had only nerds and raisonettes left from the weekend candy options. They were swamped this weekend, which was great to hear. Wicked was awesome, too, so we are deciding how many more times we need to see it - in 3D with better sound. Wicked is so good it will stay strong, as I am not alone in finding it a must big screen rewatch as a lover of musicals.
It’s interesting seeing how small all the drop-offs are. It’s like the audiences just showed up to all the movies in the top 5, enough that none of them had a terrible drop. There wasn’t audience competition, people just came out in droves.
22:28 Small fact check. Not all schools domestically were out for the US Thanksgiving weekend because the domestic box office also includes Canada which celebrated Thanksgiving in October
Thank you for the awesome information overload Dan! I thought M2 would have a big opening since it's so popular on Disney+, but wow did not see that coming. Love the flashback BO.1989 was a great year in cinema and that Top 5 is a perfect example why.
Gonna be very interesting to see the per-average numbers for the Interstellar rerelease this week since a lot of the IMAX theaters showing it are either completely sold out or are very close to selling out every showing they have.
It was always going to happen. The popularity of Moana is insane. Look to see an Encanto sequel in the next 5 years that will do incredibly well at the box office as well.
I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the Wicked sing-along screenings coming around on Christmas. They're looking for those Greatest Showman legs going into the new year.
Moana 2 breaks a box office records at $389.3 million worldwide, $225.4 million domestic, and $139.8 million that’s the biggest thanksgiving weekend for an animated film that breaks frozen 2 in 2019. 💵 💶 💲
I saw Wicked last weekend with my sisters. It was amazing! Beautiful set designs and costumes. Ariana and Cynthia were perfect for the role. I can't wait to see it again. I hope it dominate the Oscars it's so good! It's now one of my favorite movies. I think it will have long legs because it's so good.
27.9% drop after an opening over $100 million, and against a juggernaut family film making a huge opening itself is a stupendous achievement. Defying Gravity is very apt.
so happy wicked is doing well domestically. i wish the international numbers were better though. people keep saying it hasn’t opened in the biggest international markets yet, but i don’t know how much those will bring in (hopefully a good amount)
The Wizard of Oz and the original musical aren't that well known internationally compared to how big they are in the US. Speaking as a European, Wicked is very much a US phenomenon (you could extend it to the anglo-sphere too, but not much to where English isn't a first language). My local cinema isn't even showing it.
I work at an 8 screen theatre in Upstate NY. Going by the estimated numbers, we expected it to be busy, but not as busy as it was. We saw three times the amount of business we did last year.
I'll be waiting until next week to see Moana 2. My local theater had a 7:35 am showing of it over the weekend which is the earliest showing I think I've ever seen them have.
By my back-of-the-envelope math, if "Wicked" has the same legs as "Top Gun: Maverick", then it will finish around 637.9 million dollars. That would put it ahead of "Deadpool & Wolverine" by 1.2 million dollars. That's something to watch for the next few weeks.
@@daviddelara7158I probably agree. Maverick had zero competition for all of August and September basically once the summer releases fizzled out. That said, Wicked had almost as good of a Monday as Moana, with Christmas so close because Thanksgiving was so late, 600 million is possible.
On that chart about consecutive weekends with $100 million openings, it is worth noting that all of the other three instances were pairs of sequels. Wicked is the only entry that wasn't a sequel.
37:33 Sadly, All We Imagine as Light is not the frontrunner for the International Feature Film Oscars because none of the five countries with the companies that co-produced this film submitted for this year's ceremony. **France* (Emilia Pérez) **India* (Laapataa Ladies) **Netherlands* (Memory Lane) **Italy* (Vermiglio) **Luxembourg* -- Not submitted any film.
All We Imagine As Light is ineligible for Best International Feature at the Oscar’s since no country submitted it. But it deserves to not only be nominated but win!
If Moana 2 and live action Moana gets us one step closer to live action/sequels to Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and (a personal wish) Big Hero 6, it'll have been worth it
My local movie theater pulled all movies except Gladiator 2, Wicked, and Moana 2. So, instead of watching three movies I wanted to see, I stayed home. One of the movies (Heretic) they put back on screenings for the week until Friday and then pulling it again. I don't understand why they couldn't have kept 2-3 of the smallest screens for other movies. 16 screens for 3 movies just seems excessive
Dan debunking Dwayne Johnsons' planted PR-stories is the only drug I need. No media should be allowed to print stories like this before fact checking with Dan.
36:35 it’s not a front runner because neither India nor France submitted it! India submitted Laapataa Ladies and France submitted Emilia Pérez. But it would be a front runner if India submitted it.
@ it just won international at the Gothams; I think it would be very funny if it won international at every award but the Oscars because India keeps submitting the wrong movies.
The Wild Robot is an awesome movie and it's amazing to see it on the big screen. I was surprised by how much I like that movie. I wish it was doing better than it is.
Yeah, I tackled that story too - again, The Rock used that coverage to boost the case for Black Adam being a success. I'm guessing he has a very close relationship with The Rock's PR people.
36:59 yes, but leaning more towards stressed if I'm honest. The feast or famine nature of the box office now is a killer when it comes to proper staffing. When its slow we can't afford to give hours & when its busy we don't have the staff needed to handle it.
I congratulate you on your classic and I'm glad you enjoyed it. At 17, I could tell I was just a BIT too old for it to hit me like Home Alone and The Santa Clause did, but I'm happy that it's appreciated by younger generations.
Oh man as a milennial I missed this entirely (had no interest), watched at over 30yrs for the first time and dang. That's a great christmas movie. 10/10
They don't even need to be paid my friend. They just don't have to spend money on actually investigating, and generate way more click throughs because its a Rock story increasing ad revenue. No need for any actual money to change hands for this to whiff.
All this hype over Glicked, when we should've been building the hype for Mowickedana 2: Part One... we almost had a Thanksgiving opening for both Moana 2 and Wicked Part One, it was only a few months ago that Universal moved Wicked up the schedule by 5 days.

All those opening Wednesday and Thursday grosses will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
so happy wicked is doing well domestically. i wish the international numbers were better though. people keep saying it hasn’t opened in the biggest international markets yet, but i don’t know how much those will bring in (hopefully a good amount)
Thanks for the ack, Dan 😊
What a time to be alive and covering movie charts
who knew getting numbers screamed at us, is so satisfying?
good video thanks
Thanks Dan! Love, Fan
That’s not gonna happen
@@daviddelara7158I probably agree. Maverick had zero competition for all of August and September basically once the summer releases fizzled out.
That said, Wicked had almost as good of a Monday as Moana, with Christmas so close because Thanksgiving was so late, 600 million is possible.
Was waiting with bated breath for this episode!
We’re going to see Wicked this weekend - just didn’t have the time until then
On that chart about consecutive weekends with $100 million openings, it is worth noting that all of the other three instances were pairs of sequels. Wicked is the only entry that wasn't a sequel.
17:08 and this is why I trust Dan Murrell as a legit box office news source more than Deadline or the Hollywood Reporter.

Sadly, All We Imagine as Light is not the frontrunner for the International Feature Film Oscars because none of the five countries with the companies that co-produced this film submitted for this year's ceremony.
**France* (Emilia Pérez)
**India* (Laapataa Ladies)
**Netherlands* (Memory Lane)
**Italy* (Vermiglio)
**Luxembourg* -- Not submitted any film.
The Disney sequels keep getting away with it
All We Imagine As Light is ineligible for Best International Feature at the Oscar’s since no country submitted it.
Awesome weekend!
Dan debunking Dwayne Johnsons' planted PR-stories is the only drug I need. No media should be allowed to print stories like this before fact checking with Dan.
I enjoyed Moana.
Clearly didn’t reach the heights of the first but was entertaining enough.
Wicked is superb.
Gonna watch your hot frosty analysis video after we watch the film at a holiday party with friends this weekend. Hopefully it's "so bad it's good."
BIG show today. YAY! 👏
36:35 it’s not a front runner because neither India nor France submitted it! India submitted Laapataa Ladies and France submitted Emilia Pérez. But it would be a front runner if India submitted it.
Whoops - you're right. I'm in a few critics' groups where it's in contention, I forgot about the Oscars and their silly rules.
I did my part for the Thanksgiving box office and went out to see Conclave on Friday.
Anthony D'Alessandro is the same guy who asserted that Black Adam would actually be profitable in 2022, he's a notorious pro-Dwayne Johnson writer
Yeah, I tackled that story too - again, The Rock used that coverage to boost the case for Black Adam being a success. I'm guessing he has a very close relationship with The Rock's PR people.
I had no idea The Rock was riding on The Fast And The Furious franchise so hard.
SO Many Charts!!!!!!!!
I was really surprised that AMC theater made a really huge success business on Saturday.
36:59 yes, but leaning more towards stressed if I'm honest. The feast or famine nature of the box office now is a killer when it comes to proper staffing. When its slow we can't afford to give hours & when its busy we don't have the staff needed to handle it.
As a Gen Z kid, I can confirm that How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) is genuinely a Christmas classic for us
I congratulate you on your classic and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
10/10
Deadline paid by The Rock's PR simple as that.
They don't even need to be paid my friend.
They just don't have to spend money on actually investigating, and generate way more click throughs because its a Rock story increasing ad revenue. No need for any actual money to change hands for this to whiff.
I really hope we get Queer here in Australia. Looks really good from the trailer.
All this hype over Glicked, when we should've been building the hype for Mowickedana 2: Part One... we almost had a Thanksgiving opening for both Moana 2 and Wicked Part One, it was only a few months ago that Universal moved Wicked up the schedule by 5 days.
Harlem Nights talk about a guilty pleasure movie. everyone need to see this it is so fun
