Chilean here. You bet the situation was way more complicated than a short introduction can explain. Some interesting clarifications here: - The president at the time was Salvador Allende, a socialist. Yes, there was economic chaos, but not just because there was a socialist president. In a country with an almost medieval socioeconomic structure (to the point that the *Catholic Church* had started on its own a program to donate its lands to labourers so to practice some Christian social justice) the most powerful land, industry, and money owners opposed the socioeconomic reforms - with the help of the USA. Nixon didn't want ""another Cuba"" and ordered to make Chile's economy "scream." Sure it did. - Pinochet *was not* made Commander in Chief of the Army due to chaos - not exactly. In October 1970, the incumbent Commander in Chief, General René Schneider, was assassinated in an attempt to prevent Allende's inauguration. General Carlos Prats was the following in line. He was also a Secretary and VP to Allende. By August 1973, there had been already violent events involving military opposition to the government; Prats assumed responsibility/acknowledged his impotence to rein on them, and quitted his command. Pinochet was appointed in his place due to his seniority - and because up to that point he was considered reliable and apolitical. Reportedly, the other commanding generals (Navy, Air Force, Police) convinced Pinochet to join the coup they were already plotting. After the coup, General Prats fled to Argentina, where he was assassinated in September 1974. - The Chileans victimized by the dictatorship were more than 1,000. Exiled: 200,000. Tortured: 28,400. Murdered/executed: 2,123 (without a trial or martial court). This number includes: Disappeared: 1,469 (1,092 detained and disappeared; 377 executed and disappeared. 150 executed and 40 disappeared were teens and children) The numbers are inexact. Obviously. - The Chilean dictatorship had a happy ending of sorts. We defeated it with our votes. After lots of international condemnation for violations of human rights, Pinochet tried to legitimize his regime: he allowed some political activity, and in 1989 he called for a plebiscite to decide to keep him in power or to call for free elections the following year. He lost. Reportedly, he didn't want to accept the results, but the opposition had carried parallel vote counting. The other generals refused to follow him in another coup, this time directly against the people's will. He conceded. He remained as Commander in Chief of the Army for some time, and as a life-long Senator (immune to prosecution), and despite the efforts of a Spanish judge who sort of captured him in London, he was never prosecuted for his crimes. - Regarding the "line," many people, including prestigious right-wing politicians and personalities, supported Pinochet no matter what - until it was revealed that he was *also* corrupt and had increased his wealth unlawfully. Only then they retired their support. Lesson, many people care more about money than about human lives. Think about that next time you vote.
In response to the "Nebula extra thought?" No, there is no such thing as a good dictator. Power is itself a form of corruption and no one is immune. In order to become a dictator you must take power by removing it from others and once you've started down that road there is no compromising it in order to "benefit the people". Because power, like wealth, only serves itself.
So how much power becomes too much power? How much money is too much? Be specific, because I'm pretty sure you run a for-profit lifestyle just like the rest of us.
In the days of Kings and Queens, with total power over everything, we remember the bad ones, but a lot of them have been good monarch. We just dont talk about them.

I kind of disagree with the sentiment that actively improving living conditions for common people "just to gain their support" is a bad or wrong thing. It's really the only function that qualifies any government to keep governing.
Does the end justify the means? I don’t think so. Millions of supposed Jesus followers don’t give a crap about the means either. The journey counts! Maybe more than the destination.
I think the key part is that conditions are improved for certain people at the expense of others. Usually, the people more likely to support the dictator at the expense of either a minority or whoever the dictator is using as the target of blame for all of the country’s problems. “Hey, everything’s better now that the jews/immigrants/minorities/whatever are gone” One interesting thing about Saddam is that his rule actually benefited a very specific minority, Sunni Muslims. Things were really great for them. Things really sucked if you were shi’ite or the opposition.
Do you know what pork barrelling is? There is a massive difference between a dedicated public servant with democratic integrity and someone who is basically bribing a segment of the population as part of a populist agenda that will only end in their oppression.

This is why the word Revolution is usually more accurate than people think. It means a 360 degree turn to back where you started and unfortunately that's what almost every revolution does: establish a DIFFERENT oligarchy to oppress the nation.
It would have been more fitting to put it out when the govt was trying lock up a certain someone for literally 600+ years on "unprecedented" and "historic" charges and legal maneuvers. Or when they tried to bankrupt him and break up his companies. Or when someone tried to murder him to keep people from being able to vote for him. But now that he won and is talking about dismantling a lot of D.C. and shifting a lot of federal power back to the states, he's suddenly a dictator. I was hoping to see Joe try to defend the statement he's making by the timing of this video, but he didn't.
It has been said that T. Is what a poor man believes a rich man is. It can also be said that he is what a small man without power believes what a big man with power looks like. Dictators always speak directly to the small and powerless. They gain their power directly from them. They promise to be a friend and allie of those who feel they have no power. Of course they never are. Those who put them into power will worship him with a fervor of a cult leader. The poorest lives will become objectively worse while the powerless feel better about the outcome.
The irony that the reason these people have such scary power is because the people scared of them give it to them. If everyone just said no, F you; the power would dissipate... but plenty have known this and died trying. Still amazes me how many people seemingly can't grasp this concept. They act as if their "leader" was appointed by God.

States rights have nothing to do with decentralization of the FEDERAL government. Checks and balances, nonpartisan courts, unbiased supreme court, following precedent, this keeps a country safe. All of that has been ruined or damaged by the GOP who "supports states rights".
This number includes:
Disappeared: 1,469 (1,092 detained and disappeared; 377 executed and disappeared. 150 executed and 40 disappeared were teens and children)
The numbers are inexact.
Preach!
You can have a good dictator for a while. But it's going to end badly

I don't recall ever hearing Indira Gandhi referred to as a dictator. Yes, for a fairly short time she exercised brutal authority, but she voluntarily relinquished that authority, and as I recall, continued participating in Indian politics until her death. I'd be interested to know if Indians would characterize her as a dictator.
personally I don't consider Indira Gandhi as a dictator, nor have I ever seen her considered as one until recently in India. Modi supporters absolutely loathe Gandhi family, try to discredit anyone with the family name and are promoting Indira Gandhi as a dictator. She was harsh but she relinquished her power which a dictator never does.

Just a coincidence, I'm sure😉
It would have been more fitting to put it out when the govt was trying lock up a certain someone for literally 600+ years on "unprecedented" and "historic" charges and legal maneuvers. Or when they tried to bankrupt him and break up his companies. Or when someone tried to murder him to keep people from being able to vote for him. But now that he won and is talking about dismantling a lot of D.C. and shifting a lot of federal power back to the states, he's suddenly a dictator. I was hoping to see Joe try to defend the statement he's making by the timing of this video, but he didn't.
We might be entering a phase where political messages need to be subtle and disguised instead of direct (though I hope not)
You people need help. Like seriously. Seek help, there’s many options.
And money
