    UPDATE: As of 12/24/24 (yes, Christmas Eve) 4 The Mems announced that they will be closing their online store. While Cecily and Samantha initially teased that 4 The Mems would be launching future collections, it seems like they have decided to shut down business earlier than expected. The website is still live, but only for processing returns. 4 The Mems pjs will no longer be sold. Christmas cash grab: complete ✅
    ANOTHER UPDATE: The website is only live to process returns, but remember that the policy listed on the site says that they only accept returns in exchange for store credit… but now the store is closed 😂 Soooo, basically they’re not accepting returns. Cool 👍🏼

      It's pretty typical to wear one's PJs for the entire morning (usually until after breakfast) on Christmas day in North America...so they do make a little more sense. They're still stupid and I'm glad my family never did it, but just to be fair on the purpose.

    • @heatherfinch2367
      @heatherfinch2367 16 дней назад +4

      The way a lot of Americans do matching Christmas jammies-buy matching sets, don’t ever wear them again after Christmas morning photos-admittedly seems silly and disposable, but at least for our family (we rarely buy new clothes, much less pajamas), it’s simply a chance for everyone in the family to get a new pair of needed PJs and create happy memories associated with them.
      We wear ours Christmas Eve and most of Christmas Day, and for the adults (whose size doesn’t change) it becomes our new pair of winter pajamas for the rest of the year, joining all our well-worn pairs from previous Christmases. We don’t ONLY wear them for Christmas!
      And for the kids (whose size does change from year to year), getting a new pair of Christmas Eve pajamas helps them let go of their too-small pair of PJs from the previous year.
      That said, we just get basic tartan flannel pajamas 50% off at a regular store like Target and call it good. We don’t get fancy.

    • @heatherfinch2367
      @heatherfinch2367 16 дней назад +1

      Also, like Hannah notes, buying new pajamas for the whole family at once doesn’t HAVE to be expensive, depending on where you shop-I just checked my receipts, and our family pajamas for this year were under $40 total from Target (including tax), because I bought them on a good holiday sale. That’s better than buying new pajamas any other time of the year!
      For non-wealthy families, buying winter pajamas under the “Christmas gift” budget makes sense.

    • @janika2356
      @janika2356 16 дней назад +4

      @@heatherfinch2367 The fact that it's cheap doesn't make it less wasteful. If at all, it makes it more so because it already takes the fact that it's disposable into account. The labour and resources that go into these are not sufficiently appreciated by wearing them once. Not at all.

    Hey Hannah! I actually used to work in the fashion industry, specifically for a business that helped designers without fashion backgrounds create product lines, and we did our own in-house printing. I am also a bit of a nerd for high-quality pajamas, so I have some insight for you on these products!
    First of all, I hate to burst your bubble, but bamboo IS rayon. Rayon is a fabric made from wood pulp, when something is labelled 'Bamboo', it just means that bamboo is the wood type used to create the fibres. That said, many rayon from bamboo can be very high quality materials, but it is not in an of itself a higher quality material than something labelled 'rayon'. Just like you can have high quality cotton and super cheap cotton, both labelled 100% cotton. It depends on the manufacturing process. Rayon from bamboo is considered one of the more sustainable fabrics, though, as bamboo grows faster than other wood sources, but there are other high quality and sustainable rayon fabrics, like Modal (A brand name of rayon).
    Secondly, most of these PJs are absolutely out of the box pre-made generic products they slapped their own prints onto. If you look at the tartan baby jumpsuit on the website, the stripes are not straight, and the back of the fabric is white, and the print goes across the zippers. These are printed using a process called sublimation, which is a cheaper printing process, but also only works on synthetic fabrics. I believe all the kids and men's products were printed using sublimation on out of the box, white labelled pajamas. The women's would have had to be 'built', as we called it, meaning going through the traditional process of designing the pattern and fabric, printing the fabric on the roll, and then cutting and sewing. The reason for some being prone to shrinking and not others is that fabric reacts to different all-over prints like this in different ways. For high-quality brands, we'd pre-wash fabrics to remove shrinkage. The fact that the shrinking problem, and all the fit problems tells me these products were not fit-tested, which is where you make the product in a few different sizes and send them to various people to wear for a few days and get feedback about how they wear, fit, etc, so that you can tweak the design and manufacturing process before sending them out. It's a step so many people are cutting out when designing new products to save money, but means things like pants legs being too long, or fabrics shrinking are not being caught before being sent out to customers.
    The price of these pajamas would not in and of themselves would not be over-priced, if they were a higher quality fabric or made under more ethic conditions. For example, 100% cotton flannel pajamas from LL Bean or Lanz of Salzburg are a similar price, but are GREAT quality. Calling any clothing item 'over-priced' this day and age can be tricky because we are used to extremely cheap clothing made in unethical conditions. That said, these are made in China, which means they are VERY unlikely to be made under ethical conditions and are comparable to Old Navy or Walmart pajamas.
    The brief time I worked in product design, these types of people who came in to design a clothing line with no fashion background were always a nightmare. They claim they didn't know how much goes into designing a product line. Do you know who does? The people you hire to help you design the product! And yet so many of these influencers would think they knew better than us, would want to cut a bunch of corners, and then get mad when stuff didn't turn out exactly how they wanted. New products take time to design, build, fit, tweak, and they never wanted to spend the time or money to design a product properly.

Someone is supposed to check each different fabric under different types of light to ensure all different "santa reds" match each other, regardless of fabric type. Someone on the back end should be going "red is too saturated, too dark, too blue. resubmit more options". Trims and prints should be checked, too. This whole launch reeks of a rush job! I work at Old Navy headquarters as the merchandising lead over kids pajamas. Something else that stands out to me is the kids sets don't appear to be fire resistant or snug fit. Kids PJs have to follow extremely strict fire safety guidelines, and to me these dont appear compliant. Maybe the average consumer isn't scrutinizing those details, but it's incredibly alarming and potentially dangerous if these kids sets, as they're described on their website, are indeed made of non treated synthetic fabrics. If, God forbid, they catch on fire, they will melt into a kids' skin. If Old Navy didn't adhere to those regulations or disclose fire safety compliance info, our kids sets would be recalled immediately.

      Starting a pajama brand business can be an exciting venture! Here are several key points to consider:
      1. **Market Research**: Understand your target market. Are you aiming for luxury, casual, or children's pajamas? Analyze competitors and identify gaps in the market.
      2. **Unique Selling Proposition (USP)**: Determine what will set your brand apart. This could be sustainable materials, unique designs, or specific features like temperature regulation.
      3. **Design and Development**: Create designs that resonate with your target audience. Consider comfort, functionality, and style. Collaborate with designers if needed.
      4. **Fabric Selection**: Choose high-quality fabrics that are comfortable and durable. Cotton, bamboo, and modal are popular choices for pajamas.
      5. **Sourcing and Manufacturing**: Decide whether to manufacture locally or overseas. Research potential manufacturers and establish quality control measures.
      6. **Branding**: Develop a strong brand identity, including a memorable name, logo, and packaging. Your brand's story can help connect with customers.
      7. **Pricing Strategy**: Set competitive pricing that reflects your brand's positioning while covering costs and ensuring profitability.
      8. **Online Presence**: Establish a website and consider e-commerce platforms. Invest in social media marketing to reach a wider audience.
      9. **Legal Considerations**: Register your business, obtain necessary permits, and understand regulations regarding textiles and consumer goods.
      10. **Sales Channels**: Decide where to sell your products-online, in physical stores, or at pop-up events. Each channel has its own set of strategies for success.
      11. **Customer Service**: Plan for effective customer service to handle inquiries, returns, and feedback. Positive customer experiences can lead to repeat business.
      12. **Sustainability**: Consider incorporating eco-friendly practices, as many consumers today prefer brands that prioritize sustainability.
      By addressing these areas, you'll be better prepared to launch your pajama brand successfully. Good luck!

    I'm shocked that the issue of wastefulness is not being discussed at all here?? As you say-- this is a "single use product"--high price point or not, it simply should not exist in the first place. Textile workers are being exploited to make those garments at those Target and Walmart prices (and even probably many of the "luxury" brand prices as well). For people to wear once and then, what? Throw away? "Donate" to a charity shop that will throw it away for you due to non-resellable poor quality? Not only are their followers wasting valuable money on poor quality products, but this is an appalling waste of resources, an inexcusable exploitation of underprivileged workers and a shameful promotion of overconsumption for items that will inevitably end up in landfill. This is the real point of infuriation for me.

    I've been working in fashion in Paris in development for the last 10 years. Color-matching prints is one of the hardest, most tedious and longest tasks there is while developing a collection. Most of the times prints are taken off from production because of how difficult it is to get those colors to match perfectly. When there are several fabrics being used for a single print, it is even more of a daunting task. You would be surprised how hard it even is to match blacks (warm vs cool undertones, etc), so imagine how hard it is to match bright colors!
    I work in a luxury brand, so the name behind us allow us to have rush orders, but even then, it takes weeks, even months! As you said, this was probably rushed and definitely a quick cash grab. Launching a brand is definitely not an easy task, so props to them for diving right in. Next time, however, a little more research and a need to want a good product vs easy money should be more of a priority.

      @josedojaquez9003 Месяц назад +37

      @@thebookwitch895 Definitely! once you get a print on a fabric with the approved colors it should be fine. In this case, they had one printed fabric and solid fabrics that didn't match. In general maybe you want the same print for a t-shirt in jersey, but then you also want it for a canvas tote bag and for a matching swimsuit. Because they are all made up of different fibers, they take in color differently. Normally you would send all your manufacturers a pantone color for them to match and hope for the best!
      Sorry for the short explanation, I'm not really sure I answered the question or not, hehe.

    also side note... "bamboo" fabric is rayon. So is Tencel (made from eucalyptus), Viscose (often pine, bamboo, or eucalyptus), and so is Modal (beech wood). RAYON literally is just the word we use to describe all and any man-made cellulose fibres. They all go through really environmentally un-friendly chemical processing, where viscose is typically more dangerous and destructive due to the chemicals used. but none of them are environmentally friendly and none of them are remotely "natural" materials.
    So here I was laughing that we are hearing people say "its bamboo, its better than rayon" or "its rayon, its cheaper than bamboo" when its like, babes, bamboo IS rayon.

      Not exactly. Rayon and viscose is made from regenerated cellulose derived from wood pulp or bamboo, and the production process involves a lot of chemicals that are harmful to the environment if not managed properly. The process dissolves the cellulose and it is regenerated to form the fibers . When the material is made of bamboo it is called bamboo rayon.
      Real bamboo fibre is made from the pulp of bamboo plants, and mechanically processed to make the fibers. It is more eco-friendly, making it naturally hypoallergenic and moisture wicking. Because bamboo is fast growing and there is minimal chemical processing, it is a more eco friendly and sustainable material.

    • @Sudenveri
      @Sudenveri Месяц назад +11

      To add on, there are differences in the chemical processes for different cellulose fabrics, too. Modal is much more eco- and worker-friendly than rayon, especially old-school cold process rayon, which was Radium Girls-level deadly.
      Just speaking personally, I'll still take (modern!) rayon over thermoplastic fibers, i.e. polyester, nylon, spandex, etc. Between the horrorshow of oil extraction and microplastics from washing, it's the better option in my opinion.

    • @KirstenlyArt
      @KirstenlyArt Месяц назад +7

    Does anyone else find the concept of Christmas pajamas wasteful? Last year, my mom was adamant that my whole family have the same pair of pajamas from Old Navy. I wore them that day and never again. The ones we got were such poor quality that the pants pilled immediately after one wear. Even if they are the best quality in the world, wouldn't you rather spend your money on something else? I don't get it.

      I get seasonal pj's, so winter ones that are long when it's cold and short ones for the summer, if anyone wants your winter pj's to be Christmas themed I don't have a problem, but I'd agree it's wasteful to have one set just for Christmas day... that's wild.

      Matching pj's for Christmas was a thing when the mom would make the family's clothes. She'd get a bolt of fabric and use it for everyone.
      My mother in law did something like that for my oldest daughter's first Christmas. I had a flannel granny gown, she had pretty matching pj's and a new rag doll in a matching gown. It was a red tartan though and not necessarily Christmas fabric.
      Please note: it was tartan and not tar tan. 😜

  • @Enpointe4
    @Enpointe4 21 день назад +2

    So I'm not from the US, and I'm a little confused about the concept of Christmas pajamas. Like, why? And how? Do you wear the pajamas exclusively for Christmas, or do you use them as regular pajamas afterwards? (Would it be weird to wear Christmas pajamas in summer?) And why do you need fancy sleep clothes for Christmas? Why do they have to match? Do you need new ones every year, or can you reuse last year's Christmas pajamas (if they still fit)? I have so many questions.

    Polyester and polyester fleece is not allowed for children's sleepware in Australia because it melts when in contact with fire and would melt all over their skin. It's a huge fire hazard.
    Shrinking relates to the fabric used, not how the design got on there. If they are all the same fabric, they are all going to shrink.
    3 times they made sure to say they were building from the ground up - 0 apologies given.
    In 2006 I started my own skincare business. I wrote everything on my website and the terms of service/return policies. I then got a lawyer to look it over and tell me if anything needed changing. The lawyer was a cost I would have preferred not to pay, but I had the business for 6 years and had zero legal issues with it. It's seriously not hard to do.

  • @SuperMysticflower
    @SuperMysticflower 25 дней назад +2

    Speculating as someone who sews clothing (but I don’t know about manufacturing), new fabric shrinks by up to 10%, and you have to wash it before sewing. My guess is the manufacturers opted for shortcuts and didn’t process the fabric properly before sewing. Companies that do this usually state their clothes should be hand washed cold, or dry cleaned. If the fabric shrinks after the garment is made, the thread holding it together will not shrink, and you end up with ugly puckered seams. I also worry about what kind of factory conditions these are made in for the workers
    (In the UK including Scotland we pronounce tartan more like tartunn, not tarTAN or tart’n. It’s also not a true tartan design!)
