1 of the best videos out there analysing why One Piece and LOTR are great film adaptations while Rings of Power and a host of other pretenders are caravans of rotting woke garbage that spat in the face of the original authors while stupidly and vilely blaming fans for their own arrogant talentless drivel.
They're always trying to "subvert expectations" when they can't even make a "normal" story 🤣 And before you subvert expectations, you have to know how to tell a normal story first
If they had the talent to make something better than the original, they'd be making something original of their own. Or at the very least, they'd have recognized that their purpose isn't to make something better than the original, but to make something that is as close as possible to being the original somehow transmigrated to a different medium. Rings of Power has the virtue of at least being a mostly original story (albeit set in an established setting) but it's also terrible on its own merits. And it doesn't even respect the established setting it's using.
Zoro’s backstory is what hit it home for me… cause the fact that we got Kuina saying what she did and sticking to the source material shows how much respect the show runners have for Oda’s work.
It is true that Kuina believes that she will be weaker than Zoro when they grow up but not Zoro. Since Kuina's death is a key part of Zoro's drive to be the greatest swordman in the world. Kuina had always beat him, so if he becomes the greatest swordman it means Kuina is the greatest swordman in the world because he never beat her so forever in "his mind" she is better than him. And in doing so realizing her dream too.
I never read the source material, but I really liked that Kuina said that. I think almost every girl thinks the same, whether they say it or not. You're like "one of the boys" until one day you're...not. This is a generalization, but generally boys get more good out of puberty than girls. For girls it's one big confidence crises and a lot, a lot of pain. Girls still need to hear that the most important things aren't going to change. Zoro stepped right up and gave her confidence back, and that was the moment he became my favorite character (after Shanks).
During that dialogue I turned to my husband and said "Woah, I can't believe Netlix let that slide, but I'm happy!" That line, that whole scene gave me goosebumps.
Not to mention, female characters in OP are actually well written and have a personality outside of the girl boss trope that doesn't allow them to be human. They're just people with different motivations and personalities.
To be fair, many are written as women. I.e. nursing and caring. So they are mainly just classic characters instead of "modern women hating everyone and everything".
Thereis plenty of romance but not one the main characters as much. You can see the romance being more afyer times skip on relationships like Kyros and rebbecas mother oden and toki. There is also much more sex relationship than you can see ex dofy and viola, smoker and (the vice admiral girl). Ussop and the syrup village girl etc. But that's the cool thing the are extra stuff and not the main focus of the story.
It's not about copy pasting the story 1:1, it's about retaining the soul of what the original was trying to convey by leveraging whatever quirks the new medium has in the direction of a common creative vision
South African here. Just want to say, when they were filming, people could see the ship in the Cape bay. Seeing it in reality was awesome. Thanks for using my country to film!
It's actually wild to hear about showrunners ignoring source material or even proudly stating they never touched/interacted with it. Almost begs the follow up question.. why do you think you are qualified to bring this to the screen then?
I always got the impression that studios felt the need to put a "new spin" on things because they felt the source material already told "A" story, and they needed to tell a different story in their version. They couldn't fathom the idea of bringing the source material to life would satisfy people because they had already seen that story. I felt that way with the live action Ghost in the Shell. There were the good scenes, mostly the fan service portions, and the bad where they diverged greatly from the original. I also feel they change stuff up because they are unprepared to invest in recreating that world. The original takes place in space...too expensive, lets change it so it takes place on the back lot of a movie studio. I felt the extra details they put into OPLA were great. I especially loved ALL the casting. When a new character was cast, the person always resembled their animated counterpart. It was fun to finally see them in their costume and playing their part. I think for the next season they need to extend the season for a few more episodes. I feel like a 3 episode arc might help tell a little more of the story without having to sacrifice too much original material.
No its simply only one guy wants to change the world Larry Fink he bought disney and hollywood and pushing made up problems with minorityes to distract ppl from looking how he is stealing taxes money from them for making weapons and destroying the atmosphere with foucil fuel........ he is founding those bidiots to protest against oil.
@@mrchaoslordlol they should be. But we all know those woke writwr thinks they are better than everyone else in the world and those pride will lead to their own destruction
And the most amazing part is, this is not a 1:1 adaptation. They did make changes here and there, and not even small changes, and yet still, EVERYONE loves this one piece adaptation. A slightly different script in order to be able to actually adapt a work, and yet still respectful to the heart and soul of the source material. These absolute frauds from other studios have ZERO excuses. NONE. The One Piece adaptation did everything these people claimed to be doing (including diversity lol), and yet people love it. No more excuses for these people.
I spent some time thinking about this, and I've come to somewhat of a conclusion that may explain it. Because of some of the changes they've made to the stuff Aarlong's pirates have been doing, including burning down and slaughtering this entire village onscreen, they may have excluded hacchi from the Aarlong gang entirely and are saving him for the later arcs entirely, since hacchi is mostly a good dude and didn't really fit with the whole "fishman supremacy" vibe that Live Action aarlong *really* pushed. Especially since he's so important later on, excluding him now wouldn't really cause any problems so I think it worked out just fine. @@nolabratteig988
A 1:1 adaption of anything would be near impossible, if you look at the LOTR movie trilogy compared to the books the timeline is scaled down and story elements are cut out or altered to fit (no meeting Tom Bombadil, Saruman dies at Isengard instead of the Shire in the extended version, etc), but the important story elements are included, and the casting, costumes, and scenery are meticulously made to detail from the illustrated lore. The amount of effort to stay as true to the masterpiece as possible is what separates LOTR and One Piece (haven't seen it myself except for what was shown in this vid) from the woke dreck who think they're 'improving' a story by heavily butchering the narrative and race-swapping to fit their ideals.
People really forget how hard and brave it is for someone who relied solely on themselves to ask for help. She's strong enough to get over herself and think for what's best and ask for help not for herself cause we knoe she can run away on her own but for the people she love. And i admire that way more than suffering on ur own.
Yes. Also being an entirely independent girlboss is a terrible message to give to kids watching these new media. There are some things you simply won't be able to overcome on your own.
@@adamsagov1058I have never seen anyone claiming that and I am one of those ”patriarchy bs” spouters. In fact, I have seen a whole lot more backlash to the girlboss trope for how shallow it is, and this adaptation does a great job subverting it. You’re not making up a bunch of people to get mad at, are you?
@@Sealedaway Why would i even bother to make it up? I couldn't care less about those ever offended people. As for people complaining about patriarchy bs, that is simply the biggest flaw of the modern feminist movement. And yes girlboss trope reflects that.
Honestly Hollywood's biggest problem is that it's full of Writers Rooms that have people who don't like to read. It's not really talked about like a serious thing, but a writer who doesn't like to read is like a person who talks at you instead of to you. They're about their ideas, their POV, their concepts. The greatest writers are spoken about in the same tone as the greatest painters because they challenged themselves to master an artform and find individuality after. A lot of college graduated writers don't really master the artform as much as they master the process, and the fact they don't care to read makes them narrow. I know it seems weird, but it's like that. Matt Owens read One Piece, and I'm pretty sure Steven Maeda had as well. I know Matt Owens had communicated a lot with the Fandom directly and he showed what the series meant to him. He read One Piece and he loved Oda's ideas. He recognizes Oda as a master of the Artform and someone to learn from.
They probably do like to read. Yaoi and yuri along with modern works by slash fiction writers that write about how the women are strong and abuse the men.
Genre fiction has been massively popular for hundreds of years, in part because it's essentially expected that writers are all reading each other's work and expanding upon ideas touched on in other stories, all under an umbrella of similar works. A mystery or sci-fi writer who has never read a single book in their genre before is unlikely to get very far, and even less likely to produce anything remotely resembling the target genre.
@@NotAGoodUsername360 I'm saying that it's not like that anymore, and the quality shows. There's a lot of writers who straight up aren't interested in reading other writers, and a lot of these people just get by on their degrees. They probably read a decent amount in college but after that, it's all about them and their ideas and they exist in an echo-chamber. This mostly applies to TV and Movie writers, not actual authors, but it's a very real thing and the quality is noticeable. There's A LOT of Bad Writing in Hollywood right now and this is a big reason why.
Been seeing a lot of reaction videos of OPLA from non-one piece fans and the fact that it made them laugh and cry the same way the manga did for me the first time is a testament enough of how good the live action adaptation is.
I went to OPLA without any idea what One Piece was about. I didn't think much of it at first because I thought it was nothing but a story about a childish pirate boy but I was wrong!!! It made me laugh, cry and root for the characters. Luffy's positive perspective in life was infectious! I find myself smiling everytime I see him on the screen. Zoro's drive to succeed, Nami's accountability, Ussop's love for adventure, and Sanji's kindness was inspirational! It made me want to be like them! It felt personal, like I was one of the Straw Hats. Gosh! I wish I could articulate my love for them better. I am so thankful for the live action because it opened the OP door for me. I loved it so much, I even started reading the manga. 💕
@@riabolswelcome to the crew!! From the 2 year promo campaign that had ZERO major leaks until they were ready to show the trailer, and the cast going about their business on instagram as they worked on the show, and from the way the hype kept building, I knew there would be a season 2. It’s great to see new fans finally coming in. Since 2003, I couldn’t get anyone to start One Piece. But the live action may finally get them started, so once again, welcome to the crew!!
@@artofbrypaz To be honest, OP felt intimidating to me at first because 1. Some fans are kind of intense 2. There is so much material already, I dont know how to catch up. But Im so glad I gave it a shot. I loved it so much, I even convinced my senior Mom to watch it with me as I re-watched it. She loved it too! She cant remember the names but she admired ”Rubberboy”s (her nickname for Luffy) outlook on things. And I think that's where OPLA succeeded in- despite the changes, it brought the HEART of the manga to life, making its audience resonate with the crew... because at the end of the day, aren't we all just Straw Hats, trying our best to overcome our adversities to reach our dreams? ☺️
Husband and I are major anime fans, never checked out one piece bc we thought it was too goofy. Huge fans of OPLA, and going to check out the manga and anime too
Most likely but he really shouldn’t have to. Everything shouldn’t have to go through the creator. Netflix should have people who know the original artwork in and out and respect it enough to do it justice.
@@lizzfrmhon you will always get the best data from the creator of something over a fan. Fans inject their own headcanon all the time. Any fan who says they don't is lying, especially with one piece where there is endless mystery to wonder about. Making sure Oda had the final say was key. And most important, it made sure that he could keep up the tradition of foreshadowing. And there is some EXTREME implications of that foreshadowing based on what was prioritized. We all know Coby is going to fight Luffy in the future in the original source. But because of how Hollywood is? We know for sure now that it's going to be a massive, devastating battle where Coby and Luffy are challenged on their deepest core beliefs and its going to destroy us all. You don't build up a character like coby for as long as they did unless he's coming back.
So minor spoilers, I will try not to write anything specific, but just general here. Oda has a habit of bringing everyone one back into the story, even if they're a minor character or an antagonist who you would assume their story is well and truly over. So with the way Oda has told One Piece a character having major buildup and huge narrative importance could easily be put on the backburner for 5 real world years, while we get callbacks and references to minor characters in the pervious arc. Oda loves to tease new people joining the crew all the time and usually it doesn't happen for one reason or another. While yes we do see the Coby vs Luffy the situation and the fight it's self is completely not what most people expect. If Oda keeps it the same in the live action it won't be how you think it will go down Major Spoiler here. Coby gets knocked out by a single punch by Luffy. As for why I say don't trust build up. So in a future arc we meet a character called Vivi in chapter 103 who follows the strawhats and is a major important factor in the arc she is a part of. We have this character for 100+ chapters and everything is building up to her joining the crew and being a permeant member of the strawhats. Mind you at that time they spent over 50% of the then current one piece release dealing with the main issues of Vivi and at the end of that story line she doesn't join the strawhats. For the next 800 or so chapters we would get minor references to her either a cover story art or sometimes her reading news articles of what her friends have been up to in the world and reacting to it.(Mind you this was usually done side by side several other characters that the crew had become friends with.) Only for her to now possibly be teased as an important player in the current or next arc in chapter 1000+.
OP's longevity as well as being already a huge franchise without the influence of Hollywood has safeguarded this adaptation. Producers inevitably needed for this adaptation to do well
The creator caring about his franchise also helps. If Sapkowski wasn't such a grumpy old tart then the Witcher production could've went a lot better too.
Me: Huge Tolkien fan who cancelled Amazon Prime before Rings of Power dropped because I KNEW they'd screw up the story. And holy hell, I was more right than I feared. Also me: Never even HEARD of One Piece (not being a fan of the genre) and absolutely loved the series. Great vid. You nailed it.
I recommend watching the anime or reading the manga, there you can see the changes made for time restrictions like Luffy and Don Krieg's fight as well as the Buggy fight. You can also look online to avoid filler episodes but there's one is a much watch which is G-8 filler arc which is the best filler.
I think that the most important piece of the formula of adapting material to live action is to just find the people who are fans of the source material to do the adaptation. Maybe not all of them will be perfect, but they certainly won't be garbage like rings of power, witcher etc. One piece live action wasn't perfect but it did have the heart and soul of Oda's work and that's more than enough for me to love it. Great video btw, you made some great points.
Well the Witcher did have Cavell and he was a super fan of the books and games. He tried to give his own input but they ignored him. Ultimately he left and said screw you all.
Exactly. The one thing fans loved about the witcher show was Henry Cavill and that was mostly because he was a fan and made them stick to the source and only left when they refused.
bruh Henry Cavil is a massive fan of Witcher, the problem is always the narcisistic writers/directors who cant stay with the original story/script because they cant stomach the fact that the movie/series they're working on is not theirs the key word is "Adaptation" but ofc they they really dont care about that they're just using the popular Manga/manha/books/ etc for themselves so they can get popular too, they'll change the script/writing/story just so they could say or call it that "theirs" its their ORIGINAL writing/story/script 🤣
I agree with you all. When I said give the show to the fan, I meant people who have creative control over the show have to be fans. I know Cavill is a fan but unfortunately he didn't have much say in the what the script will be. I'm sad about what happened to witcher but on the other hand, I'm very exicited about warhammer and curious to see what Cavill will do with that IP as a producer and a massive fan.
This whole video could’ve ended right there. The whole point was shown through that joke. Just imagining her say that line, even in that delivery, in the actual show made me realized she would’ve felt so much more real.
There's a weird connection between Disney not listening to Lucas and Amazon not listening to Peter Jackson... as both companies did reach out to the respective directors. Lucas even wrote Disney a whole new script for... episode 9, I think it was? to try to course correct the Star Wars brand... but Disney ignored it. And, of course, you showed that Amazon reached out to Jackson and then ducked every attempt that was made to get in contact.
I am not a child or even young man. I am almost 70. I stumbled upon the live action version of One Piece. I did not know the animé version and I absolutely loved it. I have seen the animé version and have started watching it. I have seen differences but they kept true to the major aspects and did not matter to the story. I gave started watching the anime and am enjoying it
@gewuerzwanze5627 yes I know. I'm around episode 170. There are parts I don't like but overall it is excellent. I am not particularly a fan of animé. When I was growing it wasn't a thing.
Always a pleasure to someone in your age group enjoying anime 😊 Hope it can help you connect with your grandkids. PS: it’s best to watch anime in original Japanese with subtitles, I think the voice actors are better selected with Oda’s team.
The Witcher flop is the more epic example because your star is an UBER fan. You just needed to listen to him. The Nami 'Help me' scene was a direct hit to the feels!
Oda wasn't given TOO much control, either. He was against the idea of making Garp the arc-antagonist of the East Blue Saga, but was eventually talked into it, and it paid off in spades
That Nami moment is also what I tell people is the peak of early One Piece. If you want to introduce the show to someone from now on, honestly, just tell them to watch through the Arlong arc. It's like, only 20 episodes at that point, about the same amount of runtime as the whole live action, and it perfectly captures everything about the series. It captures the sweet balance of comedy, action, and drama and is a perfect microcosm of the series. And the live action nailed it perfectly. As a longtime One Piece fan, it's a damn good time to be alive.
Arlong park ends at episode 45. Wait are you telling people to only watch the arlong park bits? Who are you telling this to? People who have watched the live action or what? If you mean for completly new people then i disagree but if they have watched the live action yeah that might be a good starting point.
Ruin Johnson also said once: “I’d be really worried if everyone across the board said, ‘yeah, that was a great movie.’ It’s much more exciting to me where half the audience says it’s a great movie, and the other half says, ‘that was the worst movie I ever saw in my life.’”
That’s an idiot take but there’s something to the philosophy. If your just loved by everybody, your probably not doing anything that interesting. Now, you don’t want half the people mad, but you should be pissing off somebody somewhere or you didn’t really make something that interesting. Recently I was in another conversation where somebody says “why is last of us 2 still called a good game all I ever see is people arguing over if it was amazing or sucked ass” and to me the answer was “cause it’s years later and at the drop of a hat when it comes up people remember and care enough about it to say it was amazing or sucked ass and get passionate about that.”
"A different language is a different vision of life" - Federico Fellini "focused more on making a viable Western live-action adaptation of a manga" - Preplot Perfect explanation.
Oda is what many in the west have forgotten. A man that has a passion for his work. He takes feedback from fans but doesn't put in fan service just because someone said something bad. He would add it if it actually limproved his work or as a node of respect (Look up how Dr. Vegapunk got his name in one piece)
The Live Action wasn't perfect, but what i loved about it is that it felt like fucking One Piece man. Everybody involved put so much effort into it and they deserve all the praise they're getting
The moment that the producer joined the Reverie (an annual event made by One Piece RUclipsrs and watched by thousands of OP fans) is the moment I knew that this live action was made by people who have passion and respect for the series. 🥰
It's good to see that others understand the utter disrespect Disney had for the Star Wars franchise and its core characters. The fact they allow the lightsaber to be discarded and Luke's character assassinated, how little modern Hollywood understands its customers. One Piece truly is a miracle that it came out this good.
Oda adopts everyone's world view in the story. Some people that review One Piece weekly, affectionately call it Agenda Piece. Next season when Mr. 2 is introduced, these are the same people that are gonna have a problem with the show, like they did this season with Nojiko.
We will never make it to the Wano arc, but holy shit if we do… Also look at Ussops coloring in the anime. Nojiko is the same kind of vaguely brown which clearly translates into African during conversion.
Oh I am sure there WILL be controversy when Mr. 2 introduced. But we fans who know are all love and respect Bon-chan so we don't need to hear all those
@@msnina5379i mean Oda introduced gender blurry and gender bending characters long before Americans started calling things woke and having agendas. Oda made these characters and they just were, they existed and they had their own struggles and powers and feelings and it wasn’t all about their gender. Bon Clay sama will always be best boy in my heart and Ivankov was a riot.
agree with most of what you're saying. There's too many people out there trying to make everything about themselves (directors, actors, etc.) or trying to be woke or social conformists that only care about their 'image' or reputation. Disney is such an entity that has fallen far from its golden years, much like everything else that is currently Hollywood.
I feel like an even bigger problem is what these people consider being woke is. Being "woke" should not mean you want to only create a bunch of women characters that act like assholes. There is no real reason why that is the conclusion from wanting to be "woke". And I think it says a lot about the writers themselves that they actually see someone acting like an asshole as a power fantasy, like they want to be able to act like that themselves.
@@Mrsuperdestroyer As you say, there's nothing wrong with writing "woke" stories. Star Trek, for example, is great, and it's full of woke stories. That's because it's full of *good* stories. By contrast, with the female Dr Who run, it was full of woke stories, but it was trash because the stories were *bad*. And that has nothing to do with the gender of the actor who plays The Doctor.
Can imagine a Disney version when Shanks gives Luffy the Hat, Luffy tosses it over his shoulder and into the Ocean. Then starts sucking Blue Gum Gum Milk out of a Deformed Cow.
the showrunners and the live action crew have a lot of respect for the source material and oda in general even tho there have been some major changes in the story, they have all been aproved by oda himself
I don't fully agree with the romance/shipping makes you a fake fan part. Fans like to imagine little "what if scenarios" and also draw R34 that doesn't mean they don't understand the show or want to change it. Of course there are Twitter people who want the show to change in many ways but....most of them probably don't even watch or read the series.
Yeah, my main issue is when shippers are in the writers' room, or when writers run out of ideas and borrow from fan fiction. There's nothing wrong with shipping as long as it's not in the show.
Im actually glad that they adapted one piece this late into the anime live action adaptation game because the industry have the time and chances to learn from the previous failed or unsuccessful live action adaptation and improve upon it. Some points i think they did well and learned: 1 - they didnt change the characters or the main story too much that it separates from the source material and make it feel like its an entirely different story. 2 - they didnt 100% adapt everything from the anime. there are things the it will not translate well to live action because it isnt realistic enough and its sometimes a good idea to remove or change those part to make it more believable, provided the over arcing main story meaning isnt changed. 3 - point 1 and 2 contradict each other but its the good balance that makes a live action good or not. tipped too much to one side and you get a bad live action adaptation.
A Anime Manga fan here…. IMO Netflix One Piece is a 10/10 starter pack/trailer for new comers to the vast One Piece world… If one feels the need to get more from this world, they have it available in manga and anime… It’s win win… there is only 1 thing I didn’t like in Netflix one piece, that being Sanji not seeing Zoro vs Mihowk fight… because that made an impact on Sanji in OG. But maybe Sanji did saw it in off screen!!
same, first time watching the LA i was very happy and loved everything, there is a lot of great things they added to synthesize it, but they missed some tiny elements like the one you mentioned that could've made OPLA better, hopefully they will take that feedback for next season to make it better each time
Btw, there is a video where some interview japanese what they think about the live action, they all said Benn Beckman from red head pirate look weird lol
I think a lot of the problem is so many "writers" are basically freelancing paid gigs. They aren't writing what they want they are writing what the are asked to in the hopes of making money by using whatever "formula" they think should work. Critics make terrible creators generally.
14:40 When you mentioned Oda puts in a quote, I paused the video with a smile and lean over to read it... and then I proceeded to break down and cry like a little girl. That was an unfair sad jumpscare. That scene still made me cry until now, y'know, Oda?!
agreed with what you said. if these were any regular hollywood adaptation (with *agenda*) Nami crying and ask Luffy for help will be seen as weakness or even blatantly get skipped/changed just to stroke someone's ego of having better idea.
I honestly think future seasons should keep the sets with the goal of eventually turning it into a theme park. Those sets looked so damn amazing. Granted that would be an even more absurd amount of money spent on the land/water required.
Really good video on how modern Hollywood have ruined themselves. One Piece is the breath of fresh air I've been waiting for. I hope more people see this video!
it is really hard though, esp with the live action format they have to cut so many of characters, fun stuff out of it from source material. it is a let down but in live action it does help the flow. let's hope in future seasons they are not in the pressure to cut stuff anymore.
@@Preplot i completely agree, anytime i think about some of one pieces humor and then think about real people doing it i just cringe. people often forget anime has a huge benefit of giving us a lot of disconnect from what would normally be weird and cringe because of the fact its animated. where if you see a real person doing some of the slapstick humor you just end up thinking "the fuck is wrong with this person" cause real people just well.... dont act like that in any context
I agree with you guys that the same kind of humour where Nami beats luffy black and blue in one frame and he's back to normal the next wouldn't work... But I mean, comon, the whole show is about how Luffy brings joy and laughter to the world (spoiler alert)... So if they can't enforce this somehow on the series now, the end game will fail or at the very least, feels undeserved if they force the laughter then...
I wish the writers and directors of live-action ATLA had the same love and respect for the source material and gave us a good product instead of using it to push their agendas😢
One Piece is a perfection on multiple levels! Perfect timing of release Perfect adaptation Perfect casting Perfect story almost Perfect cinematography Perfect showcase of how will fans react to perfection Perfect outcome - next season renewed Perfect job Preplot ;p
Not just good writing But the creativity behind it aswell. Because making a 1 to 1 adaptation from an Anime/Manga to a Live Action. Pretty much setting yourself up for failure. If you're making an adaptation from an anime you must know your limitations in a Live Action setting. Like powers, different races (like Minks and Fishmen) weaponry and most importantly, Dialogue and tone. Creativity blooms once you know your limitations and the source material you have.
I think Oda is right about the criticism coming from love bc I watched it and wasn’t like “oh this is bad” it was more like “aww they cut out one of the best scenes😢”.
While this isn't entirely related to the video, I think its a good side lesson. Often times the best satire comes from a place of love or understanding. That if you want to criticize something you should at least understand why that something is the way it is. If you don't, you will be criticizing the most surface level of that something, and your criticism will come off as shallow.
Hands down the Witcher Netflix series died because idiot writers said "We hate the source material and will do things we want for the show." One Piece is incredible and the live action series has me binging the anime now.
Let's not pretend that the Management don't have something to do with the Craptastic stuff in Hollywood nowadays. When showrunners want to do a show about modern morality/culture stories but the management won't approve anything unless it's an existing IP, you are going to get the Rings of Power / Velma / Witcher BS. Fundamentally the writers wanting to write a completely different story but have to work with a show they don't care about is going to be a problem. It's the management who's supposed to set the show's characteristics, pick the writers who can/willing do it, and approve it. Nothing gets done without their approval.
Can't wait for season two, i'm kinda okay with how they did Ussop story they can always do flash backs when his character really develops in they water seven arc.
As someone who was completely unfamiliar with One Piece before watching the show, I absolutely loved it. Obviously it's going to differ from the Manga and Anime, and obviously some people aren't going to be pleased with some of the changes that needed to be made, but from my perspective as a fresh viewer, it was really good.
This is just like Peter Jackson, who held close to the source and adapted it about as well as humanly possible and created one of the greatest trilogies put to film. He took a masterpiece of literature and created a masterpiece of cinema. It illustrates just how arrogant these young writers are that they would ghost Peter Jackson, the artist that adapted a trilogy like no other before concerning Tolkien’s world. Unfortunately, George Martian couldn’t finish any more books once he became a so famous late in life. I don’t blame him. If I suddenly became mega rich rock star at 70 something years old, I wouldn’t want to spend my time behind a word processor for the last years of my life either, but I probably would do it because I owe it to the fans to that made me relevant to get that lucrative HBO deal. I lost a lot of respect for Martin when he was asked about the real concern that his fans worry he won’t live long enough to finish his book and his answer to his fans was “fuck them”. What an asshole he is. They have a real concern since he is pretty old and the average age for American men is 77.5 years and he is not on the best of shape, unless that shape is a basketball. You can almost hear the sound of his arteries hardening over as he speaks. I think that Dan and Dave did a phenomenal job adapting Marin’s books to the small screen, but I can’t forgive them for not turning the writing over to some passionate writers who really loved the lore of Martin’s world and could have did a much better job fleshing out the character arcs, rather than stumbling though it themselves. The only thing they accomplished was to show us that even though they can adapt material well, they can’t write any better than a third grader. They ruined every character arc they had going and were too chickenshit to kill off any fan favorite characters, but Martin did that all the time in the good seasons of GOT. It was expected. We were all trying to guess which characters wouldn’t survive the long night and none of them died. The long night turned into a short evening, making the Night King a joke when a 90 lbs girl can somehow sneaks past all of his generals, which they cheaply did by not showing how in the world she could have done that and instead had her just materialize in mid air while leaping at the NK, just to scratch him with a dagger and Boom! He explodes, also destroying his entire army with just one poke from a dagger. They didn’t even have her use her face swapping skills to do it. There were thousands of zombies (wights) laying around that she could have at least taken a face from to get close to the NK, not just make a single broad jump record over hundreds of feet to clear all of the white walkers and wights surrounding the NK. Just embarrassingly horrible writing. They might as well showed him nicking himself with a Valyrian steel razor while shaving and blow up like a crushed ice machine. Pitiful writing, how can this long night they built up over eight years have no cost of lives? Not one primary or even secondary character were lost. Only Jorah, who hadn’t been a factor on the show for years, and there was Theon, but that was so predictable. He didn’t need to die either since Bran knew Super Arya would fly in to save the day just a few minutes earlier when he told Theon he was a good man. Couldn’t he have tossed in something like, don’t foolishly Rush the NK since Arya is airborne as we speak and will arrive in another five minutes of airtime or so? Then there was Ed, who was a tertiary character at best. That hardly made the big war have any weight. Arya had no through-line with the NK. She had only learned of his existence a few days before killing him, that’s just bad story telling. It was all from hubris and that is what makes so many of these adaptations so terrible. Rings Of Power was a disgrace. Just another invincible girl boss who never loses and is always right about everything. If the protagonist has no flaws, then for what reason should we care to watch their story when their arc is just a straight line to the finish? One Piece is a real delight. I am really hoping that the writers don’t screw the pooch on the following seasons? Once they start thinking they can make the story better than the Manga, we’re all of trouble. Their arrogance too often takes precedence over faithfulness to the IP. Once the writers don’t feel like they’re being able to put their thumbprint on the show and somehow do things better, things will go south quickly. I really hope the creator of the Manga doesn’t allow this at all and has the power to override these arrogant sons of bitches to make them remain faithful. So far, One Piece is a winner and I know I speak for many when I say let’s hope it stays that way and doesn’t do a Game Of Thrones. Instead of Jump The Shark, the new term should be Jump The White Walkers, like Arya did to win the whole war. Even Fonzie jumping the shark was far more exciting than Arya jumping over all of the white Walker generals to get to the NK. It was embarrassing, yet D&D thought it was brilliant and bragged how they had planned that years in advance.
How to do a good adaptation - Get writers that respect the content and the creator - Get actors that respect the content and the creator - Produce content that respects the content and the creator - Make bank hand over fist
Both Rings Of Power and One Piece are expensive. Unlike ROP, you can see where the money is spent. Fantastic sets, rich costumes, and great overall production. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that She-Hulk cost $25M per episode. Where did the money go?
I like the effort and love they put in the live action. Not shiting you, a loot of people get in One Piece thanks to the live action. But for me, I can barely stand seeing the anime (not peace problem or filler for sure), so I will keep reading the manga. But still, I'm happy for the people involve for show the middle finger to the industry and say "this is how you do it"
I remember when I first saw the final trailer for the show, the one thing that stuck in my mind was that I realized I wasn't watching a live action adaptation, I was watching the trailer for a 'really good fan project'. I did not get the vibe that the show was one where it was clear that someone was trying to do 'their take', the trailer gave me the vibes that people who care for and understand their source material are doing their best to capture its spirit in live action.
I'm glad someone else has the same view point as me. If you're going to make an adaptation based off of something then do it right, don't do it how YOU think it should to be done, but how the original author wrote it. With that said if you hate the source material then maybe you shouldn't be making an adaptation of the source material in the first place. Like I am so mad about the Witcher series adaptation, but very pleased with the One Piece adaptation so far.
2:17 Not “exactly” worthy of Tolkien? You were FAR TOO NICE i would have ripped that scene apart relentlessly lol. Rings of power is a fucking joke and i hate what they did to Tolkiens works. Its shameful and disgusting. One piece live action? Damn guys i rarely say a show is “fun” to watch. But it fuckin is. Easily pulled me. Really true to the anime as far as they can go. Definitely watch it. Amazing
The funny thing about the writer rant (specially for netflix) is: it is very true. A german author whose book was supposed to be made into a film also didnt accept netflix´ conditions because in his book "Sonne und Beton" the story is about living in Berlin in the early 2000s and its about drug criminality and violence and so on. It is very authentic and that is partly the reason the book got so popular. The author said that the netflix producers suggested changing one of the arab drug seller gangs into a german lesbian girl gang. After that he just immediately cancelled all negotiations with netflix.
If you said to me back in the 2010s that there will be a One Piece live action show thats actually good I would've said: "Hmpf! I'll believe it when I'll see it." Now in 2023... Well...I definitely seen it and I wholeheartedly believe it.
That's why Henry Cavill left the Witcher. The writers aren't faithful to the source material which kinda ridiculous because people know the exact story already and we just want to see it in live action. Why is it so hard for others to get that? One Piece will be successful so long as it follows the original source.
TO BE FAIR if oda hadnt told them that they are not allowed to make romances within the crew they would have done it. never knew how smart this move was from oda
That the Marry had a longer scene was superb. It was a very important nakama for the straw hats for a long time. It felt really nostalgic to see it again...
Best part: One Piece Live action got tons of dark tones, the casting of Usopp fits so well and go right in the Face of all those who been calling "racist" every time a black actor is forcfully replacing a white character for the sake of diversity. It was never about skin color, it was about drastically changing a charicter for no other reason than call yourself "inclusive" (ironically only to turn around and Exclude all the fans asking wtf?)
Just because some writer made a good adaptation of Joker (The Dark Knight), they think that any adaptation will be a success, but this writer forgets that most of the success is due to Barry Keoghan

"Because these modern writers are thinking always that they can make something more better than the original"
And this is why they fail...
They're always trying to "subvert expectations" when they can't even make a "normal" story 🤣
And before you subvert expectations, you have to know how to tell a normal story first
If they had the talent to make something better than the original, they'd be making something original of their own.
Always
Zoro’s backstory is what hit it home for me… cause the fact that we got Kuina saying what she did and sticking to the source material shows how much respect the show runners have for Oda’s work.
I still don't understand how they were able to not gain any screeching noises from the woke people from that line 🤣
There's nothing wrong with what Kuina said. It's a fact of mother nature after all. Well done Live Action team & Oda.
Not to mention, female characters in OP are actually well written and have a personality outside of the girl boss trope that doesn't allow them to be human. They're just people with different motivations and personalities.

My only problem is where is hatchan

Yep. Steve Maeda actually mentioned that he was caught up with the manga
@@linusgustafsson2629you do know there’s a ton of commercially successful yaoi and yuri right?

If Oda keeps it the same in the live action it won't be how you think it will go down
Major Spoiler here.

You can also look online to avoid filler episodes but there's one is a much watch which is G-8 filler arc which is the best filler.
I was surprised G-8 was a filler. It fit in so well to what happenned in Water 7 finding out it was a filler was kind of shocking lol
I never heard about one piece one week before, now it is one of my fav shows. The best one I've seen in a long time.
bruh Henry Cavil is a massive fan of Witcher, the problem is always the narcisistic writers/directors who cant stay with the original story/script because they cant stomach the fact that the movie/series they're working on is not theirs
the key word is "Adaptation" but ofc they they really dont care about that they're just using the popular Manga/manha/books/ etc for themselves so they can get popular too, they'll change the script/writing/story just so they could say or call it that "theirs" its their ORIGINAL writing/story/script 🤣

The Nami 'Help me' scene was a direct hit to the feels!
its crazy how fitting it also is that One Piece ended up having a wholesome live action made by wholesome people, truly further capturing its spirit
OP had the advantage Oda had the last word.
He ordered many reshoots because he was not happy with the product at first.

"A different language is a different vision of life" - Federico Fellini
"focused more on making a viable Western live-action adaptation of a manga" - Preplot
Perfect explanation.
We will never make it to the Wano arc, but holy shit if we do…
Also look at Ussops coloring in the anime.
@@lizzfrmhonnever been, in my life consuming modern media
there is a lgbt character i respect more than bon clay sama
@@lizzfrmhonits a shame tim curry is to old and with his stroke, he would have been perfect as Ivanakov. Unless he is CGI it might be possible
agree with most of what you're saying.
Nope. Wokeness is bad regardless of stories. Feminism, BLM, lgbtq etc should stay out of our entertainment.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
I should mention that Oda fiercely protected the live action from being bad
He definitely did
Among 7000 languages, this guy decided to speak facts.
Can imagine a Disney version when Shanks gives Luffy the Hat, Luffy tosses it over his shoulder and into the Ocean. Then starts sucking Blue Gum Gum Milk out of a Deformed Cow.
Lord don't remind me. How do you f*ck up Star Wars!
the showrunners and the live action crew have a lot of respect for the source material and oda in general
even tho there have been some major changes in the story, they have all been aproved by oda himself
In Bicolnon language, Inaki means born to. I guess he was born into his role
"I'm glad you're born to look like Luffy"
- Oda
Or something like that, I forgot
Yo! Fellow Bicolano!
@@Preplot Oh yes! Or when writers have no discipline and get influenced by the fans. But Oda seems to have everything under control.
Shipping is fine. Insisting it must be canon is where it all goes wrong.
Im actually glad that they adapted one piece this late into the anime live action adaptation game because the industry have the time and chances to learn from the previous failed or unsuccessful live action adaptation and improve upon it.
Some points i think they did well and learned:
1 - they didnt change the characters or the main story too much that it separates from the source material and make it feel like its an entirely different story.
4. Identify the KEYPOINTS of the Story and keep their impact
A Anime Manga fan here….
IMO
Netflix One Piece is a 10/10 starter pack/trailer for new comers to the vast One Piece world…
If one feels the need to get more from this world, they have it available in manga and anime…
It’s win win…
there is only 1 thing I didn’t like in Netflix one piece, that being Sanji not seeing Zoro vs Mihowk fight… because that made an impact on Sanji in OG. But maybe Sanji did saw it in off screen!!
same, first time watching the LA i was very happy and loved everything, there is a lot of great things they added to synthesize it, but they missed some tiny elements like the one you mentioned that could've made OPLA better, hopefully they will take that feedback for next season to make it better each time
@@cottoncandylover666 yeah, I want the entire world to experience this masterpiece at its best..
Btw, there is a video where some interview japanese what they think about the live action, they all said Benn Beckman from red head pirate look weird lol
lol, it is a weird casting choice for sure, but main and secondary casting is 10/10 so I can forgive that one 😅
This is exactly how I've been feeling and been trying to tell people. Subscribed!!!
LOL I love how they reduced Don Krieg into a 1-minute scene.
agreed with what you said. if these were any regular hollywood adaptation (with *agenda*) Nami crying and ask Luffy for help will be seen as weakness or even blatantly get skipped/changed just to stroke someone's ego of having better idea.
Lmao what on earth are you talking about
One piece army, protect this channel from getting cancelled!!
I really hope they bring out the comedic part of one piece which was what got us hooked...
it is really hard though, esp with the live action format they have to cut so many of characters, fun stuff out of it from source material. it is a let down but in live action it does help the flow. let's hope in future seasons they are not in the pressure to cut stuff anymore.
The problem with humor is that it doesn't translate well to live action. Nami hitting someone in real life wouldn't be very funny.
I'm not even crazy about One Piece, but there was just something about the trailers that rubbed me the right way.
How To Write A Good Adaptation 101
Step 1 - Respect the source material and existing fanbase
Step 2 -
Step 3 - Profit
I wish the writers and directors of live-action ATLA had the same love and respect for the source material and gave us a good product instead of using it to push their agendas😢
One Piece is a perfection on multiple levels!
Perfect timing of release
Perfect adaptation
Perfect casting
Perfect story
almost Perfect cinematography
Perfect showcase of how will fans react to perfection
Perfect outcome - next season renewed
Perfect job Preplot ;p
Not just good writing
But the creativity behind it aswell.
I mean I have a strong feeling if Eichiro Oda wasn’t involved this very well might have happened. But I totally agree with what you’re saying.
No no, not the writers. Eichiro Oda. Without him the one piece live action would have been a dumpster fire
I think Oda is right about the criticism coming from love bc I watched it and wasn’t like “oh this is bad” it was more like “aww they cut out one of the best scenes😢”.
I had no familiarity with One Piece, or any anime, before the show. Now I'm hyped for season 2!
"No romance within the crew" Pour one out for the Robin x Franky shippers
12:59 I always felt that the strawhat crew is like family. Every time someone ships two of them with one another it feels very very weird to me
While this isn't entirely related to the video, I think its a good side lesson.
That one moment where Luffy gives Nami his hat is one of the biggest reasons I stuck with the show.
Can't wait for season two, i'm kinda okay with how they did Ussop story they can always do flash backs when his character really develops in they water seven arc.
OPLA will probably end after Alabastan or Skypea, it would be too difficult to adapt in movies
cant agree more! good job and i cant wait for season 2!
One piece is the only reason ima pay for Netflix
Romance in the crew is an absolutely horrendous idea. Thank you, Oda.
How to do a good adaptation
- Get writers that respect the content and the creator
- Get actors that respect the content and the creator
- Produce content that respects the content and the creator
- Make bank hand over fist
Both Rings Of Power and One Piece are expensive. Unlike ROP, you can see where the money is spent. Fantastic sets, rich costumes, and great overall production.
I'm still coming to terms with the fact that She-Hulk cost $25M per episode. Where did the money go?
I sincerely hope that Cowboy Bebop gets a second shot from scratch during my lifetime and gets a similar treatment as One Piece...
I did not get the vibe that the show was one where it was clear that someone was trying to do 'their take', the trailer gave me the vibes that people who care for and understand their source material are doing their best to capture its spirit in live action.
i like how u dont cover anything up and just say all the bullshit these showrunners are really doing
Iñaki is now Luffy, imagine having that responsibility 🥺
Imagine writing characters instead of Hollywood cliches
I'm glad someone else has the same view point as me. If you're going to make an adaptation based off of something then do it right, don't do it how YOU think it should to be done, but how the original author wrote it. With that said if you hate the source material then maybe you shouldn't be making an adaptation of the source material in the first place. Like I am so mad about the Witcher series adaptation, but very pleased with the One Piece adaptation so far.
the writers for wheel of time have the exact same problem. They completely disregard and shit on the books
2:17
Not “exactly” worthy of Tolkien?
I'll believe it when I'll see it."
Now in 2023...
Well...I definitely seen it and I wholeheartedly believe it.
IMO the casting is what blew me away. Its phenomenal, I mean RDJ as Tony Stark level of greatness.
Poor Henry/Witcher, after that fiasco in Season 2 we will suddenly believe that Yen have a Motherly love/bond for Ciri in Season 3? lol
That's why Henry Cavill left the Witcher. The writers aren't faithful to the source material which kinda ridiculous because people know the exact story already and we just want to see it in live action. Why is it so hard for others to get that? One Piece will be successful so long as it follows the original source.
"He hasn't spent all his retirement money yet". Is that even possible in the first place.
TO BE FAIR if oda hadnt told them that they are not allowed to make romances within the crew they would have done it. never knew how smart this move was from oda
the comparison at the beginning is brilliant
"Surprisingly not body-shamed by toxic fans"
Turns out it's not the fans who were toxic all along
What a surprise
That the Marry had a longer scene was superb. It was a very important nakama for the straw hats for a long time. It felt really nostalgic to see it again...
0:31 Pffffff...😆
I think many writers in the last 8 years forgot the definitive difference between adapt and fix.
Best part: One Piece Live action got tons of dark tones, the casting of Usopp fits so well and go right in the Face of all those who been calling "racist" every time a black actor is forcfully replacing a white character for the sake of diversity.
It was never about skin color, it was about drastically changing a charicter for no other reason than call yourself "inclusive" (ironically only to turn around and Exclude all the fans asking wtf?)
as long as once piece live action stays on track with the manga and anime the live action will be fine and get a lot of seasons.
Dude i was not fcking ready for that "erelondo, taskete"😂😂😂😂😂
Just because some writer made a good adaptation of Joker (The Dark Knight), they think that any adaptation will be a success, but this writer forgets that most of the success is due to Barry Keoghan
