You know what I love seeing? The entire cast and crew treating this as an honor, not an obligation. There's so much positivity surrounding this show and the joy is infectious.
An honor, not a platform for their own ambitions and activism. Too many actors over the last few years seem to think that being given a part on a TV show means they've been made Speaker of the Demographic.
For the first time that I can remember, the way the actors conducted themselves has actually convinced me to watch this. They are humble and actually look like they are actually enthusiastic about creating something for the fans. It's a damn shame that this is so rare.
Right. I'm late to this show and didn't read the video title so I thought the intro was gonna be another actor or writer talking about how they hate the show or want to make changes. I was literally shocked. That's what modern Hollywood has done to us.
Might just be because they actually are fans themselves. I mean the guy playing Luffy nearly breaks out in tears at the beginning when he talks to Oda. 0:36
Same thing here. Only reason why I even gave the show a chance was because of the promotional material with the actors. The one with Oda and Luffy's actor was one of the highlights for me. Not to mention that the female actors were not spouting feminist talking points with each breath, which is incredibly rare nowadays. They all looked like they had a good time with the production and were humble by wanting to represent the source material in an authentic manner. As a long time reader of One Piece, this really helped put my mind at ease before watching it.
very good point. ever since that, was it 2016 Ghostbusters. i have grown very tired of obnoxious celebrities lashing out at audiences and preaching their agendas ininterviews.
I’ve literally tried to watch the anime so many times but couldn’t get into it. I watched the Netflix version and I loved it I’ve been watching the anime non stop since 😂
Personally i think an entire cast and writing staff also have to be on the same board. The witcher is a good example of this, takes more than just an invested lead character.
im gonna be that guy, the reason the live action is soo good is because we had eichiro oda on the show along with cast who truely admire and love one piece
My son and i watched the first time through and we loved it, i could hear my wife thinking it was dumb, until she sat down and watched it. There were multiple episodes that made her tear up. I have recommended to many people to watch.
You ain't seen nothing yet. I'm looking forward to when you are able to experience the high's and lows of Enes Lobby and the Summit War. By comparison, this is a hill of emotion compared to the mountains that Oda will have you scale and drop you off of.
Exactly! That is the core of One Piece, you can't describe it without it sounding kinda dumb. I'm a science minded so it really didn't sound like my kind of story. My friends had such a hard time getting me to watch it. Well now 10+ years later, it's my favorite story ever. It's a masterpiece of character, worldbuilding, and tragedy. The world is insane and goofy but it's consistently insane and goofy so even people like me can get wrapped up in it. I think the live action only covers maybe 60-70% of the emotion, but that's still enough to make it stand out as an all time great.
That intro with Luffy is so refreshing!! An actor who is grateful and happy about playing such a positive character. We haven't seen that from Hollywood in a long time. The greatest thing about this show is that it's not your usual jaded, cynical, nihilistic crap. This show is unabashedly whimsical and good at heart. It's what the world needs more of.
@@jakemaxgross It's so ironic how this would have also been something Disney would believe, but One Piece actually captures that essence and magic feeling way better than any live action film Disney makes nowadays.
22:28 I keep thinking about the scene of Nami asking Luffy for help. Oda really didn't hold back in his writing. Throughout the season we had been introduced to this strong female character, only to find out that beneath the surface she was barely holding together. For years she had been carrying the burden of trying to save her loved-ones by first being enslaved and working herself to the ground, then stealing and betraying everyone she met, making her unable to form any real friendships. Then she finds out that it was all for nothing and there was never any hope to begin with. She is broken mentally and even starts stabbing herself in her desperation and lashes out against Luffy when he tries to stop her. Her last resolve was to at least ensure the Strawhats wouldn't be dragged down with her, but Luffy sees right through her. Then as she hits rock-bottom she can finally be true to herself: "Luffy, help me!" Luffy doesn't answer right away, but instead places his hat on her head. The hat, which we have learned, is his greatest treasure and represents his dream of becoming the king of the pirates. "Of course I will." From now on I will be much more invested in both Luffy and Nami as characters and this scene of Nami showing weakness has in fact strengthened both of them! Hollywood writers need to look at this and take note of how to write compelling characters. After seeing them broken down, it is much more satisfying when we see them overcome their past weakness - simple but effective.
To be fair.... you also have to realize One Piece is also almost 30 years old.... So yah.... no shit it's got good writing. Now yah you'll still get really good anime and manga that are made today. But the stuff of the 80s 90s and 00s just hit different.
Also shoutout to Matt Owens and Steve Maeda that condensed 1200 mins worth of storytelling while adding a storyline from way later in the story into less than 7 hours seamlessly
@@Edwin.Serrano Garp is introduced much later in the manga. The fight in episode 8 between him and Luffy would maybe happen in like 30-40 more episodes if everything was kept the same. Not a bad change at all by the way. Kinda makes more sense like this.
You are 100% right, respecting the source material is part of why this show was so good. The other was the fact they only used CG for impossible effects like the rubber, Buggy, etc. They built almost all of the ships and sets in the show. And it just makes everything more believable. Seeing a real Going Merry just draws you into the world.
@@drakearvidsson6936Ben Beckmann is fine, lucky roux is the one who’s race was changed and yassopp and Usopp are the ones that went from tanned North Africans to sub Saharan Africans but they still play the character the same
@@Abysalss Yeah but at least they aren’t fat & dull as characters.Scratch that comment out lucky roux was always fat.But it didn’t matter because he was cool AF.But Ben F Beckman isn’t allowed to be that. He’s Ben Beckman the right hand to shanks & potentially shanks replacment if he dies.He looked like my father in the show he was barely even worthy off being called a pirate let alone a hitman
eeeee, Usopp represents African countries in canon. it was literally stated by Oda. You can say he's mixed, because of his mother, but that doesn't change that he would be african in our world. Luffy f.e. would be brazilian (so mexic is close enough). If someone is a bit tan in manga, it usually means he's black. That's just a stylistic choice, so really no race swaps. Nojiko, Lucky Roux, Yasopp, Usopp are all perfectly casted. @@Abysalss
From the many father scenes in this series, one was very striking to me. Where Zeff has eaten his own limb,so that a little boy who is not even his child, can live, that was so so touching the way they brought it in this adaptation. So many Good father figures is something I missed seeing on screen. I had a good dad,may he rest in peace... I watch One Piece and miss him alot.
That's what truly missing from DIsney and the MCU. Concentrating soley on women in a series/genre where the CORE CONSUMERS and PRIMARY DEMOGRAPHIC are men between the ages of 10 and 49 doesn't make logical sense. Strong men, strong connection. It's important to reflect that.
@@cjcarn5509i think you missed lots of subcontext in the interactions and ignored the care and loyalty Sanji shown toward Zeff and the restaurant. check again who's the blind one.
And proof that most of us are willing to admit when we were wrong, and lavish praise and appreciation on an adaptation that was handled in the same way.
I agree. I've never watched any One Piece, I think that style of anime/manga is stupid (just my personal preferences and opinion - I also think Harry Potter is dumb). However, my fiance got me to watch this with her as soon as it came out. We binged it over a couple of days. It's freaking awesome. I was very pleasantly surprised. My experience is pretty much identical to Gary's journey on this. Bravo to the showrunners, director, writers, and cast. Well done.
I knew nothing about One Piece except that there's a lifetime's worth of source material and anyone would need to make it a full time job to get caught up on it today. I didn't even know it was a pirate adventure story, really, though I'm vaguely certain I had heard that it was, once long ago, and forgot. Hearing Gary talk about it on a recent Open Bar with Drinker and MauLer, I got very interested. Not that Gary's recommendations hold a huge amount of weight with me, nor anyone else's, but just his enthusiasm for the show came through particularly strongly and that got my attention. And he talked a bit about it not being a bunch of girlbosses. Then MauLer said that the story structure was "normal", and the characters motivations were clear, and that it just had really ordinary, normal, non-subversive writing. Wow, have I wanted that again. So I gave it a shot, going in blind, and Gary is completely right about this. MauLer too (though he didn't give quite as strong a recommendation as Gary). This is fun entertainment, that doesn't try to do anything but be entertaining and leave you happy and satisfied. There's no agendas in it, it's *normal*. The stories just make sense. It's genuine, you can't help but like the characters. Even the villains are quite charismatic. I was never a Brony, but I remember when MLP:FIM was going on, there were a lot of people talking about why all these random adults, and a lot of adult men, were interested in this little cartoon show for young girls. And the explanation that made the most sense to me was that it was part of the New Sincerity movement. Basically, a reaction to the postmodern, cynical garbage being shoved down everyone's throats everywhere else in culture. People want stories that are familiar in structure, featuring characters that are good and honest and trying to do the right thing, with approachable and colorful aesthetics, and a positive moral message. That's it. Nothing more deeper or complicated than that. People want stuff that looks good, feels good and aspirational, and makes them happy as they go about their lives. While most of Hollywood is trying to push depressing grays and deconstructions of every hero and villain until you can't tell the two apart. One Piece seems to fit in perfectly with that New Sincerity movement. To be unashamedly in pursuit of one's dreams, and to help one's friends to achieve theirs as well, that's awesome. This show won me over almost immediately by how seriously it took itself, and how colorful and lively it was. The situations are ridiculous, the world is bizarre, but who cares because it's fun and it has a positive, optimistic outlook. And I am so hungry for stories like that again, from when I was young and not so cynical myself, and Hollywood still put out optimistic and normal stories. More of this please.
I feel sorry for him though because as open minded as he is, he's still not ready for the hard sells of the anime fans in his audience for other works. It broke Sargon.
@@y.f8139 yeah man... Leaving your grandson alone in the Jungle or in the care of some mountain bandits is hardly my definition of being a positive mentor. But he cares about Ace and Luffy in his own way as shown in Marinefort and I like his character the way he is. His last appearance in the manga was quite something tho...
@@Barwasser you know, he had no choice. He was always travelling as a marine and having 2 kids roaming around would not be easy, let alone allowable. Even putting that aside, if Luffy and Ace didn't live in the shadows, I don't think that it would take much time for the World Government to find out about their fathers. That would endanger Ace and Luffy's lives and Garp's position as a Vice Admiral. I think that what he did was for the best. He didn't abandon them but gave them a house to live in. He even made time to come to the East Blue from the New World to see them once in a while. That is love, my friend. So Garp actually cared for Luffy and Ace and diving a bit into his actions would give you his reasonings
I love that Nami's big moment, despite being arguably the most competent of the Straw Hats, is when she dares to ask for help. Refreshing in the age of "I don't need anybody because I'm already perfect" female characters.
To be fair that scene was written about 22 years ago and is one of the most iconic scenes in anime/manga history. It is up there with "I want to live", and "nothing happened". The show changed a few very important lines and dropped a few important characters but overall was a good adaptation. Best adaptation done to date.
Watching this with my sons I shed a tear when it is revealed that Zeff ate his own leg so that Sanji could eat real good. My kids didn't understand that part but I did. And my father having passed last year, Sanjis farewell to Zeff got me right in the feels. I'm glad I kept watching this cause at first I thought I was going to hate it. Seemed super goofy and annoying at first, but there was this sincerity to the goofiness that was strangely endearing. Glad I watched it through and hope they can keep the momentum going because it's great fun and something I can enjoy watching with my young sons that they can remember the way I remember watching Indiana Jones and Back to the Future with my dad.
You nailed it there’s an endearing quality to this goofy show one piece lowers your Guard with those goofy designs if you seen the manga you’d understand more 😂 glad people are giving it a chance
I also love the lore that Sanji's "Black Leg" fighting style was inherited from Zeff. The idea was that Zeff only used his hands for cooking, not fighting. Hence his nickname "Red Leg". Because all the blood of his enemies would end up there. So not only did he sacrificed his main mode of attack to save young Sanji, but he even taught him how to use his techniques to make sure he can hold his own against anyone.
I never thought of that. Like the impact when jax girl got her hand slammed in a car door when she was a baby heart surgeon in Sons of Anarchy. I can see them doing something with that, using his hands in a fight when he doesn't have a choice and fucking up his cooking - his passion and purpose. (Also was done well in the first Dr strange movie)
Oh damn I knew about him saving his hands because he's a cook but I never thought of the impact of him eating his leg besides his grotesque it is. You're absolutely right, he sacrificed his future as a cook pirate right there. He will never be able to fight again without sacrificing his hands aka cooking. Goodness gracious
@@ot7biasedmashups But again, Zeff did make sure another kick-fighting chef would take his place and live long enough to see the All Blue, that being Sanji. In a way, Zeff is what Garp wanted to be for Luffy. The only difference is that Garp tore Luffy's dream down every chance he gets (mostly because it's not in-line with his principles). But Zeff was lucky enough to meet someone just like him. And he did it all to keep Sanji's dream alive. Even at the cost of his own. I knew my father would do the same, rest his soul. Speaks volumes on what a good father figure can do.
Their dedication to the Manga and their love and passion for the characters is a breath off fresh air. So nice to see. When Oda said that to Inaki I got choked up
Man I never even watched one piece, but seeing how much fun the crew is having, the absolute love and respect they hold to the author. Man it's so wholesome I want to cry 😭
As a one piece fan for 15 years im so happy they did the show justice and they are bringing new people to the story. It only gets tougher to adapt from here and i truly hope they can pull it off.
Yeah it's gonna get way harder, really curious how they'll pull off characters like Chopper and Franky, but also how the scaling will be once beings like the Giants appear in the story.
What I love most about Inaki's interpretation of the character is that despite the live action version having to tone a few things down, Inaki as Luffy embodies the spirit of the anime/ manga.
@joeyzapata6786 there is a fan made film on RUclips named "Afro samurai champloo" and it's a masterpiece, I hope one day we can see something like that in live action
@@joeyzapata6786as long as they get another showrunner like OPLA’s matt owens, who’s already a superfan of one piece before being the showrunner (he has old pictures on his instagram going to anime conventions hunting down one piece figurines lol) and respects the material so much like the rest of us. it also helps that there’s a huge amount of one piece fans in the cast (emily rudd & mackenyu) and the crew. i love samurai champloo so much, and if they get to make a live action adaptation i hope they put in the same amount of love and care in the IP as much as the team behind OPLA.
This felt like a highly produced documentary or short film more than a review but still achieved the same result while providing more entertainment then one would think it had any right too. Congrats Gary and Garret and team, you managed to do what the show did.... just in a review. Bravo~
They seem to have really worked hard to get the casting right. I wouldn't be surprised if in the auditions they put them all together to see who had chemistry and picked the best group even if there might have been better individual actors (not saying the acting was bad, quite the opposite) in each part. That's something Hollywood used to do, and fell out of favor with studios going for name recognition above all else.
I have never seen a performance so camp and yet so awe-inspiring as the bloke who played Mihawk. Not sure how they got that so spot on. Either the director or the actor or both are a genius.
I really liked what they did with Buggy in the show. He was a great addition and slight change to the story. Mihawk’s actor is probably also a fan of the show like everyone else which was how he knocked it out of the park.
It's great it felt like seeing a really good stage play where all the actors are having fun I didn't care for the anime or manga oddly this I'm enjoying xD
Nami is a real girl boss. She takes care of the finances. She is the only one who can get all the guys to follow her logic when it is needed (even Luffy). She isn't trying to run things becuase she isn't the Captain.. she knows her place and still runs the crew when needed. She doesn't try to be a guy or not need the guys. That is better than any of the ide girl bosses they make.
She really is the brains of the operation for a large stretch of the story. Without her, the boys wouldn't be able to handle the ship or the day-to-day operations, and she prevents them from doing stupid things when they are hot-headed.
Agreed, same with the second female set to join the straw hats. She knows she isn't the captain and also kinda is mad at Luffy for not letting her unalive herself. She has knowledge that maybe only herself has left in the entire world and is basically "mom" to the crew. Oda can write strong women characters without slamming your face in it.
And despite being slow to trust and strong in her own right, she knew when she couldn't hope to win against Arlong and his men and when to humbly ask for help
Agreed. I’m actually surprised that they didn’t pull a bait and switch on us and make the show about Nami. And they didn’t have her complaining about the evils of the patriarchy or how hard it is to be a woman every five minutes.
That's exactly the premise of escapist fiction... Go figure the industry most associated with escapism, especially in times of geopolitical/socioeconomic crises, would forget the entire concept.
I absolutely love that the live action is bringing so many more new fans into the fandom. Welcome!!! Enjoy and please take your time. It’s a long journey.
@@Ritokuro You definitely entitled to your opinion. But judging by your responses here, you’re still a edgy teen that gotta be against anything popular. You’ll grow out of it. Trust.
I mean, look at how lovely the cast is. Dedicated, talented, and just good people who respect the creative process, and care about what they're doing. Now look at that chick who starred in that Disney Snow White remake.
Right? I was like "when we see Luffy, it brings happiness. By just him smiling. Who are they gonna bring to live action who can do that?" And mf, did they surprise me.
One of the many things I appreciate about One Piece is how they managed to pull off the live action pirate aesthetic. It reminded me of Pirates of the Caribbean at times, but with an added flare of Oda's ship, charm, writing and character designs. I'm glad Gary got the chance to binge this show because yeah, it really *is* the best show of 2023. Words cannot describe how HAPPY I am to become a fan.😁
One Piece is pure, unadulterated, escapism joy. So happy to hear it's coming back for at least another season, but hoping for much, much more. (And as someone who also lost their Pops, that Zeff goodbye scene absolutely hit me in the feels.)
Isn't it amazing how ethnically diverse the cast is, but the pr concentrates rather on how they try to be faithful to the source material? Like, you can just look at the people involved and see who they are, but they don't feel the obligation to proove how inclusive they are, (because that is self evident) , they just want to make a good show. More of that please.
My wife and I watched this on a lark..."lol another Netflix Anime adaptation?! Let's see how bad it is!" Having absolutely no background on One Piece we came away feeling...overjoyed at how GOOD the show is! You could tell just how much the cast was invested and loved what they were doing. This is incredible and could be one of the best things ever created for Television. So, after enjoying it so much, I decided to go online and find out what "real" fans thought of it, thinking that perhaps we only enjoyed it because we didn't know the lore...lo and behold, nearly everyone saying that it was faithful to the original content and they were loving it, too! I can't express how happy that made me, knowing so many real fans out there were happy with this live action! It also made me a bit sad, knowing the franchises I truly loved as a 'real' fan were butchered by Netflix (Witcher, Cowboy Bebop, etc.) and I lamented what could have been. I truly, TRULY hope that Hollywood and Netflix and all studios see this and pay attention and start treating IP's with as much love and care as was done with One Piece. Love, Two brand new OnePiece superfans.
Trust me when I say this, what you just watched in the live action is just the prologue of the series. After this, the series gets even crazier, with more characters, more locations, more history, more villains, & if you thought some of the backstories in this were sad, you haven’t seen anything yet! Hell, the crew you meet in this series? This is only half of them, & the other half are just as crazy & lovable.
I hear you in the butchering. I am not a Witcher fan (I still need play Wildhunt) but watching Henry Cavill get betrayed by the writers and producers saddened me. Being a major fan of One Piece since the early 2000's, I was very worried about this adaptation. But now I can say it has become yet another version of one of my favorite stories that I can enjoy with the manga and anime.
Welcome aboard! One Piece is genuinely my favorite franchise after years of refusing to watch anime at all. It took me til about Arlong Park to really get invested, but then what we get next with Alabasta drew me in completely. Every arc after that hooked me more and more, especially Enies Lobby since Robin and I are like the same person, so I hope you keep enjoying it like I did
@joncoutts1671 To new One Piece fans from a decades old fan, I’m glad you enjoyed this story, it is very deeply beloved by millions of people around the world. And I truly wish I could have had the same experience with The Witcher as you did with One Piece.
thats how i felt after watching first 3 seasons of the walking dead... i am not saying i want one piece the live action to fail but i am not optimistic to be totally honest.
The part when Oda told Inaki" I don't see anyone else playing Luffy than you" he got emotional and it mean the whole world to him. Been given the author's blessing push him to do his very best into portraying the character.
This show blew me away. Couldn't believe how much I loved this show. The most likable protagonist I have seen in a long time. I can't wait for season 2... and 3 and 4 and 5 and...
This show came as a total shock to my system, after being bombarded with total crap for so long. I came to this show blind, not knowing anything about the manga or cartoons. But I couldn't stop watching after the first episode, and it just kept getting better and better. It was sooo much fun, and an emotional roller-coaster that actually had me tearing up during some emotional scenes. I LOVE this show. I can't wait to see more...
@@Vyomesh839The worst part is it was ONLY 8 episodes, and it'll be a long time till the next season comes out. I hope they manage to maintain the same quality across the board in the follow up seasons. The beautiful part is that there is so much original content for them to work with, they shouldn't run out of story anytime soon.
I literally cry everytime I watch the anime episode for Going Merry and Ace. I have watched the anime at least 3 times and those episodes still made me cry as much as the first time.
I had a dream about my dad last night. So when I saw that farewell scene between Zeff and Sanji, I teared up. My dad, and mom, had to put up with so much nonsense from my brothers and me, but they were the best we could have and I’ve grown to appreciate my dad now that I’m one.
One Piece Live Action is what entertainment should aspire to. It doesn’t have to break new ground, conform to modern audiences, or preach something. It just has to entertain.
The moment modern Holywood shifted away from just “good entertainment” the world lost something. Nice to see a small corner of the world doing it right
Oh, then you’re in for a treat. You just have to have the patience to watch/read through 1000+ episodes/manga Worth it tho, even if it takes you 2-3 years to accomplish
The Sanji scene with Binks's Sake on violin is heartbreaking and amazing. I can't wait till they make Brook's back story, makes me shiver. I cannot stop watching this video!
They've got Chopper arc, and Alabasterarc , picking up Nico Robin before that, not to mention Skypea, and Franky. Before the rescue arc. I imagine Thriller Bark won't show up till season 3 at least. Which gives them a lot of time to get Brooks effects in place.
I have a feeling Brook is gonna be in an after credit scene to end a season and tease the next one. Will be great to have a scary head turn look at the camera then see him laugh yohohoho
What a no nonsense moment was that line from Kuina. A decent not toxic show from Netflix and it helps that Oda is keeping a close eye on the production.
that line hit like a ton of bricks. actually aknowledging the disadvantage women biologically have, followed by "fuck it lets be the greatest anyways" is more empowering than all the hollywood equality bs
Still Not Sure If She did soicid or If She was sexchanged by ivaknov's trans DevilFruit . Their Graveyardstone stood beside one with the Name ivaknov and looked Like wanokuni so many expected For this Mysterien to be solved there ,but IT wasnt. I Wonder If Oda will Adress IT even once again.
Bruv, that line hit both me and my wife so hard. It was one of the best female moments we've ever seen on screen. A woman admitting her own weakness but pledging to try and be the best anyway......that's a good woman moment right there. If they want "empowerment", that's how you do it. Jesus.
18:20 small correction. Sanji is not a kick-*boxing* chef, he's a kicking chef. As cooking is his true calling, he doesn't use his hands in fights so that he won't hurt them. Great review though Gary, happy to see this show covered so positively.
How grateful the actors are to be in the show, and to make it authentic to the source material, is SO refreshing. Seeing their interviews is exactly why I watched it and why i stuck around, and what a pleasant surprise. Such an incredibly fun show
everyone in this show are dedicated fans from the producers to the actors. Nami's actor emily spent 3 yes THREE years trying to get that role, even dying her hair the same color. that's dedication to get a role you want for a show you love. Also as another youtuber noted. this show does something that only the expanse pulled off. Diverse casting done right. Each of the characters is different, rather than doing the usual hollywood pandering to the viewers who would be mostly one ethnicity. One Piece dared to be different they went and found the right people for the role. ie Zoro is of japanese descent (Oda's comment) nami is caucasian, Sanji is russian/mid european that sort of thing. so they weren't afraid to mix it up. there were some changes, ie Nami's mother in the anime/manga she is white but in the live action she is african american i believe. Oda seems fine with this change and it wouldn't have been to pander to some agenda, more likely she is a damn good actress who won the role through skill rather than politics. in fact so many of the actors even the bit ones seemed to be having so much fun it looked more a labour of love for them rather than just 'another acting job'. good example is helmo in his room playing with the swords. (my eyes they burn arrggh) but damn that was funny and the actor didn't look awkward, in fact he looked like he was enjoying himself. its this magic that brought the show to life. when the people making it believe and the actors believe magic happens. sadly to many shows now are just paychecks for actors who turn up put in a wooden performance and leave. In fact i gave up on most western shows and am now watching South Korean and even some chinese shows as they are sooo much better.
I was someone before the LA series that had only ever heard of One Piece. Otherwise, I knew nothing about the storyline or the characters. I'm not a huge anime person either, though I've definitely enjoyed a few movies and series over the years. Yet pretty much from when the first LA trailer dropped, I found myself intrigued (much to my own surprise). When I watched the entire series I got to the end and was surprised again by just how much I had not only enjoyed the show but excited and invested I was in these characters and how eager I was to see them return for another season. Despite the cartoonish nature of the show it was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2023 and I'm super excited to see what happens next. Hats off to the creators, actors, and crew of this series.
I only watched some clips of the anime years ago and I just found it different than any other animes in terms of the artstyle and never was interested to watch because I am more into shorter animes like Dr. Stone Then last year, One Piece got so much hype due to some specific things in the latest episodes that time (I won't spoil it but if you know then you know). That made me wanna watch One Piece but still too scared to start because I didn't continue some other long shounen animes like Naruto or Bleach (not because I don't like it but I don't really have time) so I was scared that the same thing might happen to One Piece. Then this live action came, and after watching it, I finally started. And here we are, I am all caught up in the anime lol (not manga) and seeing some new Netflix videos about incoming OPLA season 2, it just takes me back hahaha. Nami became my most favorite character after the live action, and she still is even in the anime. One of the latest arcs showed some wonderful Nami moments which showed how much she grew since Arlong Park, and those details for my favorite character also showed me how much the Strawhat crew grew throughout the episodes🥹 I can't wait for the season 2 of OPLA after seeing recent Netflix videos announcing Season 2, one with Usopp's actor (on April Fool's Day which is also Usopp's birthday), and another is with Luffy's actor (on May 5 which is also Luffy's birthday)
Wow, you both had fun times watching. Meanwhile, when I watched the series I got confused about the changes. I thought they didn't change the story from the source? They changed a lot. Don Krieg is nowhere to be seen. The Arlong storyline is changed. They even shortened the story arcs. I'm disappointed about this. Good thing, I can always go back to my DVD set of One Piece (the anime).
@@jmutube61191 Yes that's true. I've watched some interviews/reviews regarding the changes and I find the changes understandable. Even the author Oda said that he understands if some fans are disappointed of the changes and he just then positively replied that those feelings of these fans came from a place of love (this is one thing I liked about Oda). But despite the changes, there were some cool Easter eggs or manga details that they adapted. Like example, the scene where Nami stole a ship from the two pirates in the LA Episode 1, her outfit there is her outfit of her early concept style drew by Oda (her early concept also included a metal arm and a weapon battle axe) which was changed to the Nami we knew currently in the manga/anime. Another example is the scene between Zeff and Garp at episode 7 where Zeff told some stories regarding the Jaya arc which the Strawhat crew went to after Alabasta. Speaking of stories, in the LA, they also hinted about Noland the Liar when Nami is reading a story to an unconscious Zoro after his fight with Mihawk. And there are other Easter eggs that are included, whether it was the Revolutionary Army mentioned at a newspaper that Kaya was reading at episode 8, or the Yohohoho song being played in the background during Luffy's backstory, they did their best👍
Kuro had gloves with blades and i love that they kept (ofc they did under Oda's watchful eyes) the way he pushed up his glasses, which he did even without the gloves on out of habit of not to cut himself. Always liked One Piece, because from the start you knew that there is an ending with a goal, which is kinda rare in mangas.
Those bits with Inaki Godoy were really touching. I'm so glad this show turned out as well as it did. It had absolutely no right to be any good, and I'm just blown away that they somehow managed to make something as crazy as One Piece work in live action. Seeing some of the most famous scenes fully recreated in live action was an absolute delight. And I'm especially thrilled seeing you, Gary, and everyone else love it so much. One Piece is genuinely one of the best stories I've ever read, and I'm just happy seeing it getting more fans. That said, while I'm optimistic about the show moving forward, I'm also worried. I would love to see them adapt the whole series, but with how long One Piece is, that might not even work, especially with the actors getting older. They need to crank up production crazy if they want to tell more of the story. I also hope they just tell the story as is, and not try to add any sort of commentary, because there are some characters coming up that I know they'd love to make statements on (*cough* Bon Clay *cough*). With that said, I can't wait to see them cover the Arabasta arc. I'm especially excited/concerned, because next season will introduce Tony Tony Chopper. If they can make Chopper work in live action, then I think a lot of my concerns might be quelled.
Well season one of the live action did change things like have Garp introduced way earlier and having Coby be the deurotagonist instead of disappearing for 500 episodes-- but these were good changes in my opinion and didn't actually bastardize any of the themes of the original. Then there's stuff like how Nami leaving the crew in the Baratie was actually a focus of the episode, we saw her choose to stay for Zoro, and finally leave by "betraying" Luffy instead of just having her leave off screen like it happened in the original. I thought she would leave and not be there for Zoro because I knew as a fan that it was coming so her staying hit hard. If they make changes like that with introducing characters early or changing how events happen, I hope they do it like they did season one. It makes the new seasons of one piece interesting even for old fans because they can see things play out differently while still following the same overarching plotbeats.
I love the Nami scene where she asks Luffy for help because it's the first time in a long time where she had agency, and Luffy knew that. It's a much slower burn in the anime because a lot more happens, but it drives home that Luffy might be dumb, but he's not stupid, and he's always been a really inspiring character just based on that single aspect of his personality.
Yes. I LOVE the fact Nami is presented as an Evil characters, but in reality she is a good woman that decide be the scapegoat to save every body. The sweetest redemption arc ever.
Although it's a very understood plotline and character trait for luffy i still see many people miss this. When they reach the town, luffy already knew nami was a good person and therefore had good reasons to hide stuff from them, one of the first things he does is asking her if she needs help. He won't intervene with things because he trusts nami and will wait for her to be ready to ask for his help. He's very smart and understanding of people, he has 0 patience to bullcrap, his crew and friends are everything to him.
@@DPedroBoh Right on, same as when he saves robin, or how chopper join his crew, or soge king arc or any other of his crews, Luffy never impose his will into others, he simply make a room for others to join him with his action.
The cast had a great chemistry and were so adorable in all their promotional videos, they did a great job making us root for them even before the show aired. And it didn't disappoint! I hope it goes on for a long time :)
The editing in the video is absolutely insane!! Whoever the editor is clearly a one piece fan for sure! The OSTs on the background are on point 💯 and also thanks Sir for covering a series that is beloved by many 😊 this is just a start to an insane adventure full of mysteries, politacal intrigue and most importantly fun. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series too and would be glad to hear your thought arc by arc if you do decide to read the manga.
Totally agree man. IMO it is edited even on par with the OPLA itself in term on true dedication to source materials and making things work nicely. This editor should foresee the episodes of next season.
I think the thing that makes Nami's character so good is she doesn't need to degrade other characters or constantly remind the viewers or the crew that she is a strong, independent woman, she just show up and get shit done without being an annoying person.
I agree. Positivity and genuine appreciation for strong, traditional, inspiring male figures is what’s missing from the western media and OPLA did an amazing job spreading it. Loved to see it
Seeing the scene where Nami asks Luffy for help referred to not as one of the best scenes in One Piece or even anime, but instead "The best scene of the year in television" really shows just how amazing of a job they did bringing this show to a mainstream audience
It's been about 18 years since I started this crazy pirate journey, Couldn't be more proud and excited for the crew that worked and are working on this.
I started watching One Piece this year and have become a big fan. The live action series was so much better than I expected that it reminds me of the Lord of the Rings movies. They were made with love and it shows.
I’m with u Nerdrotic…. My kids have spoken about the anime over the years. Never watched myself. Saw that the live action was on Netflix. Ended up watching the entire season that day. Been a long time since I genuinely enjoyed a show like that.
There are so many parallels between the production of this series and Arcane. The amount of love and dedication that went into it, the writing, the characters, the lack of filler content, and the absolute surprise of everyone's expectations being immeasurably blown away.
As a kid from California who grew up weird because i watched anime, this was always the show that i could never manage to pick up. I had to have tried at least 10 times before i just conceded. When i saw how much praise and excitement this show was getting and the OG creator's input in the show, I was hoping this would help me feel compelled. After watching it, I dove into the world building and immediately got obsessed. Needless to say, I've fully caught up with the anime (taking the manga slowly) and it has begun to contest my favorite animes of all time. Such an inspirational; nearly perfect story.
Literally the exact same thing for me. I watched like a hundred episodes about. 7 years or so ago, and was like eh on it. Then seeing the hype for the live action got me back into the anime, and watched it up through the beginning Thriller Bark, where I then picked up manga, and am now caught up reading weekly. Although, when I did catch up it was the first chapter of the Kuma flashback so it was literal despair for those first 7 or so chapters I read caught up. 😂
This might be one of the best videos to date, the editing is amazing, whoever put this together is incredible, thousands and thousands of cuts went into this video. Teared up a couple of times while listening as well. Thank you!
I may be biased as someone who loves anime and adores One Piece, but I do think this is a show TV needs right now. It has the creativity and fun manga and anime is known for while also implementing recognizable TV drama and dialogue that's just as engaging. It stays very true to the source material while also not being 1-to-1 with it and doesn't really pander itself to modern writing tropes
I fucking loved how they pulled off Sanji. They gave him modern pick up lines/rizz while still keeping up with the source material. That was a masterstroke in of itself.
The show runners had to practically convince Oda to change some things like bringing Garp in earlier. Oda didn't want to do it and in fact he hated that change but I guess it worked out for the best.
@@DarksideGmss0513 I really liked that change, kinda puts more pressure on Luffy from the start and serves as a reminder of the constant spearheading the Marines will do to him now that he's a pirate.
I definitely enjoyed the performances of Mackenyu Arata (Zoro), Taz Skylar (Sanji), Peter Gadiot from Queen of the South (Shanks), and Steven John Ward (Mihawk). Mihawk: "I don't hunt rabbits with a cannon." Zoro: "Why's the waiter here?" Usopp: "Because we can't boil water." Awesome crew of actors. It's still a blast watching it.
I am from Japan. I grew up reading the monthly One Piece comics. One Piece is an absolute master(piece) and I wish I was a child again exploring along with the strawhats for the first time. One of the greatest collection of stories and life lessons are packed into one big adventure.
My only concern is how certain commentators will react to characters like Ivan and Bon Clay. Hopefully they are executed well enough that the politics can be looked past.
Which the show completely butchered for Usopp, in live action he is already the character he would become over the story just without the powers, but where was the whimpy, lying to save his ass, emotionally wrecked Usopp?
I've been really looking forward to this video. Sure it's fun to see Gary pick apart bad shows, but it's so refreshing to see him geek out about a great show because it's been so long since that last happened. Luffy became one of my favorite characters of all time with this show, he's just bursting with boundless positivity and determination. He's everything a young man should aspire to be. This show just made me feel good from beginning to end, and that's exceptionally rare these days.
The lead actor was so brilliant in this show and when you see his enthusiasm for the source material it all makes sense. Imagine that, an actor who legit loves the source material!
As a 10+ year follower of one piece, literally since I was a freshman in high school, I’m so glad that the live action went well. Smiled and laughed like I was watching or reading the real thing. It’s by far the best version of an intro into the series out there, head and shoulders above the anime and manga when it comes to getting immersed quickly. But, like so many other fans, I wish that they’d had the budget and/or time to draw it out a little bit more in order to properly introduce the straw hats. They feel like generic versions or like a summary of what their characters should be.
If anyone wants to ask me questions about the characters and missing lore from the manga I will, but I won’t go into spoilers beyond the source material that was adapted for this live action 🫡
Hopefully with the way how successful it was, they'll have bigger budget for the next season. I've only heard of One Piece, never watched the anime or read the manga, but the show was amazing.
@@GlarusGamingnot sure, the budget was already one of the most expensive of all time. Roughly $18 million per episode. Some stuff from the anime did kinda need to be cut or swapped around. SPOILERS FOR LIVE ACTION . . . . I do think it was a wise choice to reveal Garp is Luffy's grandfather. In the anime you do t find that out til after episode 300.
@@Flufferz626 I agree with this! also minor spoilers: It also gives insight to Luffy as a person since he partly takes after his grandpa. And we get to see the bigger PoV from the Marines and Koby. Its a nice contrast to the pirate world. Had they not revealed done the reveal, it wouldn’t make any sense as to why Garp was doing so much to chase down a rookie pirate. The reveal made the chase more personal, therefore making his/the navy’s involvement much more believable.
Great video. Shoutout to your editor as well, they're either a One Piece fan or REALLY did their homework with those music cues. For years we fans were worried that it would fail and reflect poorly on the series. Or worse still: that if it WAS good, not enough people would pay enough attention to it anyway. It's great to see fresh, unbiased eyes like you and many others enjoying the show. Bring on Season 2 - it only gets better from here.
Big One Piece fan here for over 20 years. Seeing someone as popular as you talk about One Piece makes my heart soar! I LOVE your inclusion of all the One Piece anime music when you are explaining the plots! And YES Garp is a positive mentor to Koby and Helmeppo.
I LOVE how much fun the cast is having with each other. You can tell their chemistry is spot on. Even if I'm wrong and they don't get on, that means their acting is incredible to make me believe they're great friends.
God, its so good to be wrong and have a show be BETTER than what you expected instead of worse. This captured the magic of the original story, which is the highest praise I can give it. I'm really happy for anyone who was introduced to One Piece through the Netflix show and I hope Netflix knows to just leave the showrunners and Oda alone and let them do their thing.
The opening almost brought me to tears. The people in charge of MANY other beloved stories do not have this attitude. Everyone involved in this is exactly the sort of person that I wish was making stuff for Marvel, Star Wars, and the rest
As a (hobby) writer myself, I couldn't help but smile all throughout this series. One Piece is successful with a very simple story and very simple writing, you could even say it is successful because of it. At its core this is not fancy, or super innovative… it’s simple writing 101 but done well and more importantly done with some heart... and voilà it works… There is beauty to be found in simplicity… and it definitely shows if someone put some heart and soul in a piece of media or if it is solely done for cash (looking at you modern Star Wars)...
Yep, Mauler's take on it was, "Finally a normal story." He mentioned that the world and characters are completely bonkers, but the actual story is simple and logical.
As a professional writer, I can tell you that One Piece does not have a simple story or very simple writing. it probably looks like that up front, but once you dive into it, it's far deeper than.. well, anything I've ever seen or read. Or written, for that matter. It's the kind of stuff you dream of writing when you're still just learning the ropes.
I would had never think to watch this on my own. Finally a show with strong male figures. My daughter watch the anime so she was very familiar with the show. We watch it together and she was praising what a great job they had done. I loved every minute of this show. Thank you so much for recommending it.
Never knew what One Piece was until the Netflix series. I don’t watch anime and knew it had been around for a long time but didn’t give it the time of day. The Netflix series made me obsessed with the series, the cast, and the story. I can’t get enough.
When you get through the Amazon Lily - end of Marineford set of chapters. I've read comics for my whole life, it's a truly incredible continuous run of chapters. It's like reading a new The Iliad or Odyssey and knowing it's gonna be immortalized once it gets to the masses. The story hits those mythological beats and things that resonate with people no matter where you are from.
I can tell from how you talked about this that we’d disagree on a lot, which is why you liking this show for the reasons you did is so refreshing. You said you’re a One Piece novice, so I’ll let you know that what you like about it goes straight back to Oda and the manga…which I think you’d like even more. You think Sanji’s backstory is great now? (It is, but oh boy does it go even harder later) There are three big things that I think really made this work. First, and most impactful, Oda sat over this show like a goalie, keeping it true to his story. Second, so many of the people working on it are huge fans of the story they’re telling. Last, whatever could be done with practical effects was. They built the ships. Zoro and Sanji can actually fight. They ground the show in reality, and that let them be believably fantastical. I needed more when we got done, so I read the manga 😅 my partner started a rewatch of the anime. I’m watching the live action for a third time with our kid. I’m really glad it broke the live action curse
I've been watching the anime (started it last December) and when I started the Netflix show I was blown away. Not just because it was good, but because of the passion and effort that everyone involved put into its creation. Sure there are differences between the original and this but its and adaptation, not a copy and paste. I think you are right in calling it the best show of 2023 because it deserves it. Tomorrow Studios really turned things around
Can't even begin to tell you how much fun I had watching this with my daughter. Even my wife thought it was great (believe me, that's pretty amazing). We absolutely loved it. Now I'm watching the anime, and I'm glad I watched the live action show beforehand.
I highly recomend for you to switch to one pace, its a fan made version thats more accurate to the manga. Since in anime they stretch an episode to 1.5 then 1 chapter a episode while the standard is 2 chapter per episodes, they dont have a lot of early arcs yet made but once you get to enies lobby you can swap permamently and trust me its much better watch since at that point they begin to stretch episodes too much.
I also became One Piece fan after watching the live-action, started watching the anime and already on episode 520, it's a wonderful story, crying like a baby several times, and now humming sake no binks every day.
I don't know what is more amazing here, the fact that there is actually a really GREAT series that is true to its original story and legacy animation that is actually worth watching, or seeing a positive review from a happy Nerdrotic! Both are a rare treat indeed and it's pretty FANTASTIC!
Fantastic adaptation, casting was the strongest point of the show IMO and all the little extra Netflix videos with the cast on RUclips help you connect with the group even more, Netflix seems to have done everything right with this one so far.
I loved how all three Haki were used in the show but only fans would have seen it. Little details like that are what make a show like this go from good to great. Like Haki was not really hinted at until Skypiea, but Shanks used it in Luffy's back story.
@@bolajifashola7126 Garp used Armament to punch Luffy across the village after Arlong Park, and Luffy felt the pain of the punch. If it had just been pure strength, even if it had sent him away Luffy would recover much easier.
Another aspect I absolutely love about the One Piece Live Action is how they used the wanted posters to depict scale. The big glowing bounty numbers literally in-your-face telling you how dangerous certain enemies are. When the crew struggles with $15M Buggy, then $16M Kuro shows up, you immediately get a sense of his threat level before any fighting has even happened. The payoff of this is Mihawk being noticeably (BOUNTY CANCELLED) just before he cuts a ship in half. For new viewers, this becomes a "how big is that jump? $30M? $300M?" Finally, Mihawk toying with Zoro without breaking a sweat sets a gut-wrenching realization that these $15-20M bounties are child's play in the broader world. This is the kiddie's wading pool that Luffy and the Strawhats are currently in. ((Season 2 spoilers below)) Season 1 hasn't even finished the _prologue_ yet. The East Blue saga isn't even Chapter 1 - it's the setup _before_ Chapter 1 can even start proper. The Grand Line map isn't pointing them to the final destination. It's pointing them to the STARTING LINE.
@@superspies32 My theory regarding your spoiler: My guess is Laughtale is just the backside of Reverse Mountain and therefore technically _is_ on the map, but not how people expect. If you think about it, that's where the "furthest destination" along the Grand Line/New World would be (because that's how circles work). Also, the Red Line and Grand Line form a convenient X on the planet marking the spot (knowing that they are at 45 degree angles, and not the equator/prime meridian respectively). Also also, it would make sense that all of the "destination" dreams on the Straw Hat crew take them back to Reverse Mountain: It's technically the point where all four oceans meet (a.k.a. All Blue), it's where Laboon is waiting, and if it's also where Laughtale is, then it would be the perfect "laughing tale" to cap off the journey. It's also the furthest point on the planet from the seat of the World Government (on the other intersection of RL/GL, on the opposite side of the planet), so it would make thematic sense that that's where the seed of "freedom" waits.
You know what I love seeing? The entire cast and crew treating this as an honor, not an obligation. There's so much positivity surrounding this show and the joy is infectious.
Many of them were already fans.

I watched the Netflix version and I loved it I’ve been watching the anime non stop since 😂
When your lead actor tears up at a compliment from the creator, you know there's real emotion in the show.
I got a little emotional myself, to be honest.

It's probably fake. They are actors for a reason.

Thier is dark moments in One Piece but it is all about hope freedom and choosing your own path and following your dreams.

Then as she hits rock-bottom she can finally be true to herself: "Luffy, help me!"
Luffy doesn't answer right away, but instead places his hat on her head. The hat, which we have learned, is his greatest treasure and represents his dream of becoming the king of the pirates.
"Of course I will."
From now on I will be much more invested in both Luffy and Nami as characters and this scene of Nami showing weakness has in fact strengthened both of them! Hollywood writers need to look at this and take note of how to write compelling characters. After seeing them broken down, it is much more satisfying when we see them overcome their past weakness - simple but effective.
Wait till you see their other female member then. Not to mention it's where most jumped in the hype.
Amen. Let us continue to spread the gospel of good writing. 😎👍
I first watched this scene in the anime in 2006, and to this day it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.
Amazing display of friendship.
To be fair.... you also have to realize One Piece is also almost 30 years old.... So yah.... no shit it's got good writing. Now yah you'll still get really good anime and manga that are made today. But the stuff of the 80s 90s and 00s just hit different.

Gary going from not interested in OP, to expecting the worst from Netflix, to loving it, is truly an arc worth of the best animes.
Well done.
All in 30 less episodes that an anime would take to tell the same story
The fact that he called Nami's flashback the "most messed up" one makes me wonder what he'll think about Robin's flashback 👀👀

Leaving your grandson alone in the Jungle or in the care of some mountain bandits is hardly my definition of being a positive mentor. But he cares about Ace and Luffy in his own way as shown in Marinefort and I like his character the way he is. His last appearance in the manga was quite something tho...
Those flashbacks where Garp throws Luffy in a pit, jungle at night, etc.... "iiiyyaaahhhh" 😂

Well if they stick with the source material, season 2 should be even better. Escalation of this story is one major reason for its success.
loved your comment
And also he was the one who taught Sanji the code of man honor.

Seeing Inaki smiles MAKES me smile, and no one could do Luffy better. I am so proud of him!
What I love most about Inaki's interpretation of the character is that despite the live action version having to tone a few things down, Inaki as Luffy embodies the spirit of the anime/ manga.

Seeing how enthusiastic and honored the cast are to be portraying these characters is just as good as the show itself.
Their chemistry together is off the *charts.* I can't wait to see them again in season 2. 😃
It's just such a wholesome difference to those self absorbed, activist assholes like Zeigler and co.

Hell, the crew you meet in this series? This is only half of them, & the other half are just as crazy & lovable.
I hear you in the butchering. I am not a Witcher fan (I still need play Wildhunt) but watching Henry Cavill get betrayed by the writers and producers saddened me.
Stone
Then last year, One Piece got so much hype due to some specific things in the latest episodes that time (I won't spoil it but if you know then you know).

The fact the protagonist is so passionate and honored to be apart of the show makes me want to watch it now.
Agreed. Love the montage at the beginning
Every scene every frame has a feel to it that people who worked on it poured their heart and soul. And it shows. Amazing series!
I agree. Positivity and genuine appreciation for strong, traditional, inspiring male figures is what’s missing from the western media and OPLA did an amazing job spreading it. Loved to see it
This is what happens when the cast are passionate and care about the story and fans, it was the best show I’ve watched in a long time 😊
One Piece is the best show made in almost 20 years. I haven't seen a TV show this good since Enterprise went off the air in 2005.
I'm truly glad to see this. When artists respect the stories they tell and the people that love them great things happen.
I started watching One Piece this year and have become a big fan. The live action series was so much better than I expected that it reminds me of the Lord of the Rings movies. They were made with love and it shows.
I'll keep adding: I have now rewatched this fully twice. A really cool echo of the fun and cool things in a banger package.
hats off for the AWESOME EDITING on this video, you left a lot of one piece youtubers eating dust in regards to overall quality
Genuinely hope this adaptation receives some awards. SO happy for the team and Oda. 🥰
great video. great show
6:37 It's actually fitting the Japanese actor understands the full context of them re-enacting the Hat exchange scene.
That intro actually made me cry, love the whole crew so much
As a kid from California who grew up weird because i watched anime, this was always the show that i could never manage to pick up.
Thank you!

Gary's come such a long way.
They need to understand, respecting the source and the fanbase is how you succeed.
You may be biased but you're right.
Mihawk: "I don't hunt rabbits with a cannon."
Zoro: "Why's the waiter here?" Usopp: "Because we can't boil water." Awesome crew of actors. It's still a blast watching it.
@nainshimpykh why are you spoiling them
@nainshimpykh you're very rude delete this
I am from Japan. I grew up reading the monthly One Piece comics. One Piece is an absolute master(piece) and I wish I was a child again exploring along with the strawhats for the first time. One of the greatest collection of stories and life lessons are packed into one big adventure.
Genuinly cried at the goodbye scene between Zeff and Sanji.
Man, if Nerdrotic likes what we have now, then he ain't seen nothing yet. So much character development.
He is going to stop seeing american shows😂
My only concern is how certain commentators will react to characters like Ivan and Bon Clay. Hopefully they are executed well enough that the politics can be looked past.
Which the show completely butchered for Usopp, in live action he is already the character he would become over the story just without the powers, but where was the whimpy, lying to save his ass, emotionally wrecked Usopp?
"I want to live!!!!!"
@@anthonybuck1044Hold on there my friend, we still got 2 seasons to get there
I've been really looking forward to this video.
I didn't like Luffy, or the actor who played him, at first. But then...he kinda grows on you.
Read that as fishman in high school 3 times before I finally made it!
@@GlarusGamingnot sure, the budget was already one of the most expensive of all time. Roughly $18 million per episode. Some stuff from the anime did kinda need to be cut or swapped around. SPOILERS FOR LIVE ACTION

I do think it was a wise choice to reveal Garp is Luffy's grandfather. In the anime you do t find that out til after episode 300.
@@Flufferz626 I agree with this! also minor spoilers:
It also gives insight to Luffy as a person since he partly takes after his grandpa.
Dude the editor made my eyes water multiple times. They're obviously a big fan!
At its core this is not fancy, or super innovative… it’s simple writing 101 but done well and more importantly done with some heart... and voilà it works…
There is beauty to be found in simplicity… and it definitely shows if someone put some heart and soul in a piece of media or if it is solely done for cash (looking at you modern Star Wars)...
Your daughter sounds like a cool human. You sound like a great dad. :)
I'm unfamiliar with One Piece but watching this video it's just nice to see something where everyone's smiling, and it comes off as genuine.
The Sanji Zeff scene had me crying in the anime. Can't wait to start watching the live action. ❤
Never knew what One Piece was until the Netflix series. I don’t watch anime and knew it had been around for a long time but didn’t give it the time of day.
The Netflix series made me obsessed with the series, the cast, and the story. I can’t get enough.
It's a modern Odyssey. Peak storytelling.
What episode are you at?
I can tell from how you talked about this that we’d disagree on a lot, which is why you liking this show for the reasons you did is so refreshing. You said you’re a One Piece novice, so I’ll let you know that what you like about it goes straight back to Oda and the manga…which I think you’d like even more. You think Sanji’s backstory is great now? (It is, but oh boy does it go even harder later)
There are three big things that I think really made this work.
Everyone who worked on this should be absolutely over the moon and proud of their work. It waa outstanding.
I am just really happy that the creator retained control so that Netflix can't go and fuck it up in season 2.
Did anyone use Armament? Mihawk and Garp def used Observation and Shanks used Conqueror's.

((Season 2 spoilers below))
Season 1 hasn't even finished the _prologue_ yet. The East Blue saga isn't even Chapter 1 - it's the setup _before_ Chapter 1 can even start proper. The Grand Line map isn't pointing them to the final destination. It's pointing them to the STARTING LINE.
and another spoiler:

Laughtale IS NOT on that map. It was hypothesized and found by Oden and at the time of ep1 he was already dead.
@@superspies32 My theory regarding your spoiler:
My guess is Laughtale is just the backside of Reverse Mountain and therefore technically _is_ on the map, but not how people expect.
